PREMIERE : Universo – Kora Buta [STEP Recordings]

step recordings - universo

With a steady release output of deep and textural cuts, Pets Recordings sublabel, STEP (pets spelled backwards), continues with a March release from Łukasz Maszczyński, aka Universo. Hailing from label founders Catz N Dogz’ homeland of Poland, this is Maszczyński’s second EP under the Universo (soundcloud) alias, taking a break from his past Kixnare project where he had worked with Pets before.

Today’s premiere highlights the tough-yet-sunny track “Kora Buta”, just one of four equally exploratory songs off the Underworld EP. Straight from the start, Maszczyński incorporates a heavy tape saturation into the mix, adding warmth to the vibe and teasing out plinking rim and glass shots atop a nice sturdy kick. As the twinkle of a muted wind-up music box fumbles organically in the foreground, there’s a nice dynamic with a fat, rolling, Moogy bass lead throughout. As ethereal pads slink in and out of the high range, that lead’s resonance gives way acidic squelches as the listener is transported to a world of playful exuberance and whimsy.

Kora Buta stands as a nice centerpiece to this collection of tracks, underscoring Maszczyński’s eclectic and introspective sound, with a toughness that’s guaranteed to warm up the stiffest of early club hour nerves. His mixture of Chicago House aesthetics paired with exotic and vintage field samples produces a seductive and raw soundscape. Here’s to hoping there’s more to come from this exciting producer.
