Times & Tunes with Aaron Andrew [Chubby Records]

The Chubby imprint first delivered in 2015. Based in Sydney, it’s a highly selective situation with the labels output few and far between. The next EP is a vinyl only affair with four original cuts by Aleqs Notal, Jose Rico, David Swatten, and Aussie super-talent Ewan Jansen.

All of these cuts get a rerub, perhaps the most notable being by techno legend, John Beltran, who weighs in on Swatten’s OG and seriously ups the amps. On the week Chubby drops this release, we talk to label boss man Aaron Andrew.

INTERVIEW

Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, We’re Chubby. An underground, deep house, all wax releasing label. We’re based in Sydney, Australia. Currently run by Aaron Andrew.

Tell us where you’re from and where you are now?
Chubby! was born and bred in Sydney, the founders both arrived here from Port Macquarie in 2008.

What are you looking forward to most this summer?
The beautiful weather, beach and not being in lock down (Fingers crossed).

Talk us through your new VA/EP.
This new release is another mix of the greatest underground artists from across the globe. It’s an extension from our past releases, whereby a selection of tracks were taken and then remixed with the original songs core elements. Initially this release was going to be split as Vol 4 & 5 but due to covid we decided that this double would be ideal to pick up where we left.

Who would you love to see playing this music?
Anybody who loves to see the genre expand and grow, being an underground scene it’s commonly for selected ears but were happy to see it be played absolutely anywhere.

Where is the ideal place to listen to it?
Whether it be coming from your local Dj, in your own setting at home with the Hifi set up. Anywhere that will give you the full sonic reference.

What was the last record you bought?
Various EP – ‘The Evolution Phase Three’ released on Alex Attias’s label ‘Visions Inc’.

If someone wanted to get to know your taste, what album should they listen to?
Recent one would be Planisphere – Definitive Transmissions released on the UK imprint ‘For those that knoe’, An Older one that comes to my head would be by the Chicago’s almighty Chris Gray’s, ‘Fish & Luvconfushun’ released back in 1998 on Fragmented Record’s.

What other labels have you got your eyes on at the moment?
The Italian imprint Neroli Run by Enrico Crivellaro, UK’s Placid aka Paul Wise’s label ‘We’re Going Deep’ & another to mention would be Alleviated Record’s by the one and only Larry Heard Aka Mr Fingers. All these push the required goods.

What are thoughts on Spotify?
We’re on the fence about it all, I’m currently still using Youtube as there is a lot of music that is not uploaded that we enjoy checking out. Still coming across old Artists & Labels that we can confidently say wouldn’t be there. We do believe it’s another great market to be ventured into though.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Right now, I can’t really think of anything to say here besides there needs to be more venues around Sydney that are pushing the true Deep House sound & everything else in-around.

What is the best musical advice you’ve ever been given?
For me with mixing, I’d say continue practicing & introduce new techniques to your sets.

What do you have in the pipeline?
Not too much in terms of releases but will be ongoing with the podcast series. We plan to continue pushing great music for the listeners.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about you and your label?
Be sure to sign up to our podcast via Apple and keep an eye out for this release, Very excited as it feels like it’s been too long since the last.
