Fantastic Voyage is the brainchild of Los Angeles-based producer Justin Jay. Bursting onto the scene from his college dorm more than a decade ago, Mr. Jay was the youngest member of Claude VonStroke’s Dirtybird Records. Since that time, the producer has grown quite a lot, embarking on a journey that has taken him far from the American soundscapes he first gained so much notoriety.

What I find commendable about Fantastic Voyage is its steadfast commitment to inclusion. The variety of music one can find on the imprint is truly astounding. From pop to R&B, indie rock to lo-fi house, Mr. Jay shows no qualms with promoting any particular kind of sound. Artists in the collective appear to have free reign in expressing who they truly are – with the number one goal being to have fun and make friends.

Having completed 5 years around the sun in 2021, Fantastic Voyage is starting off the year with a release from up-and-coming Canadian producer Stekl! Titled Make It Work, this EP sets out to capture the emotions of summertime in Vancouver. During those months of the year, the city only reaches around 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Definitely not ideal weather for most summertime activities. However, as the title of the record suggests, sometimes you just have to make it work!

Featuring a total of 8 tracks, 2 of them being remixes from Bolting Bits’ favorite Tilman, Make It Work is a collection of dreamlike Balearic beats and deep disco cuts that exude a feeling of subdued optimism – gently urging listeners along to make the best of what’s in front of you. INTERVIEW

This past year I’ve been working on music for a compilation on Pacific Rhythm, as well as an EP coming out later this year on Echovolt Records out of Athens, as well as a bunch of other stuff that probably won’t ever make it out!

And what does 2020 look like for you? Do you have any musical plans that you’re particularly excited about?
My plan for 2020 is to make a lot more music and hopefully get some more of it out into the world.

With your track H.U.W., you made a great contribution to Pacific Rhythm’s recent various artist’s compilation. Would you say that track is similar to a lot of the music you’ve been making or interested in recently? 
I’d say so. For me, this track draws on jazz, Latin, funk, disco, and house. These are all styles of music that I love and listen to. H.U.W is based on samples from a Japanese Jazz Funk record, with some additional drum machine and synthesizer parts layered over top.

On my EP coming out on Echovolt later this year, I didn’t use any samples. It has a more electronic sound that is reminiscent of early Chicago house like Larry Heard, or Detroit techno like Underground Resistance.
This is a tough one… but how would you summarise your musical style? 
I’m all over the place… Blues, Jazz, Rock n’ Roll, Funk, Soul, R&B, Hip Hop, Latin, Dub, Disco, Balearic, House, Techno, Ambient…

Which, if either, do you consider more central to your musical identity: producing and composing or DJing? 
For me, DJing definitely fuels my inspiration to produce. When I discover some new music that really gets me excited, it makes me feel inspired to create in the studio.

Do you have any experience touring as a DJ or performer of another sort? Is this something you hope to do or continue to do in the foreseeable future? 
I’ve done a fair bit of DJing around Vancouver but hope to have the opportunities to travel and share my music in other cities in the future.

Are you content in Vancouver? Can you see yourself moving in the near or distant future? 
Maybe one day I could see myself moving or at least spending part of the year somewhere else… Maybe Los Angeles … or Barcelona? But Vancouver is a special place and it will always be home.

What’s the best thing about being involved with Vancouver’s music scene, and Canada’s in general? 
The people of course! The artists, DJs, music heads, promoters, dancers and party people make it the vibrant and inspiring community that it is.

And lastly, tell us about this mix! What would be the ideal listening environment for something like this?
I’d say, put it on in the evening when you’re hanging with your mates to get warmed up before heading out to a party!

Specials Worldwide is a new project started by the founders of Pacific Rhythm, New Forms Festival, and The UV amongst others. In the spirit of global collaboration, Specials Worldwide’s first release comes courtesy of Vancouver’s own ZDBT & Washington, DC’s own Dreamcast. The collaborative “On Love EP” between the producer and singer/songwriter is a musical anthology of 2019 “love in this club” anthems, featuring the lead single “Take A Chance (On Love)” and B-Side “Time For You”.

The EP is the end result of a multi-day studio session in August of 2018 when Dreamcast was invited out to Vancouver for a live show with locally based imprint Pacific Rhythm. With immediate chemistry abound, the result was “Take A Chance (On Love)”, a beautiful permutation of R&B and Techno that melds the soulful vocals of Dreamcast with the peak time Techno of ZDBT (known for his work with 1800HaightStreet on labels like Lobster Theremin). B-Side “Time For You” is a slowed down, dubbed out one-take vocal with Dreamcast featuring his soaring vocal range over moody Techno chords, resulting in another ode to the pursuit of finding love in the club.

Rounding out the EP is a blissed out, Trance tinged take on “Take A Chance (On Love)” courtesy of Montreal based producer Project Pablo and an even deeper, dubbier version of “Time For You” by DJ Sports, the Danish producer and member of Århus based collective Regelbau. Grab your copy here.

Melbourne’s prolific electronic music scene recruited another valuable member last year, when Perth-born producer Katie Campbell, or Roza Terenzi, joined what has become a popular migration of budding West Australian musicians moving to the east coast.

Roza told us that about two years ago she felt she’d progressed enough musically to warrant an identity shift, taking the solid reputation she’d built with her first moniker Catlips into her Roza Terenzi alter ego.

And it looks like it’s paying off. She’s been making big waves around Australia – at least big enough to induce international demand that will see her set off on her first North America and European tour later this year. These waves have come in the form of some impressive gigs and records, like her debut live set at the carefully curated Inner Varnika festival near Melbourne last weekend. And on the record front, she’s about to drop arguably her biggest record to date: a four-track EP on Voyage Recordings.

“I was in the zone of listening to lots of experimental and trancey stuff,” Katie told us, explaining the creative origins of the upcoming record.

Our premiere is the remix from Vancouver’s own, D. Tiffany, AKA DJ Zozi. At least for the sake of the EP’s musical unity and cohesion, D. Tiffany was a wise choice for a Roza remix, with plenty of stylistic similarities between the two. In fact, their cross-continental synergy recently saw the completion of their collaborative EP on Vancouver label Planet Euphorique, set for release on April 30. So it’s no surprise this remix slots in quite seamlessly next to the three originals.

Perhaps the most texturally diverse track on Voyage’s 11th record, it seems D. Tiffany left no musical stone unturned when compiling and shaping the sounds for this remix. The track is a fast-paced, bouncy number that probably sits somewhere under the ever-expanding generic umbrella of house music. But a description left there would deny deserved mention of the track’s uniqueness: Its old-school tempo and energy is built up with new-school sounds, that together create a rapid and choppy yet pleasantly fluent five-and-a-half minutes of listening.

The rest of the EP is also, as Katie put it, quite experimental. Lilli’s Lounge is a parabolic journey of ethereal pads at the start and finish, bridged together by a wild monotonous acid line and Roza’s trademark glitchy percussion in the middle. You can already pre-order your copy here.

Weakest Link, the record’s title track, is stapled by a driving breakbeat surrounded by short, sharp percussive samples – some of which sound more like yelping chopped vocals – that rapidly jump in and out of the beat. Like Lilli’s Lounge, these contrast with sections of softer melodic elements to create quite a rich musical narrative.

Seminyak Dream begins and ends with beautifully spacey drips and blips that sandwich a heavy house rhythm and bassline. The track reaches its emotional crescendo toward the end with the introduction of a long, two-chord, looped pad to bring the track to a satisfying end.

Set for release on April 27, this EP is one of several upcoming Roza Terenzi releases, but one that we’re particularly excited about. If you want to catch some more of her music, keep an ear out for her releases on Amsterdam’s Kalahari Oyster Cult (due for release this week), Planet Euphorique and Melbourne’s Salt Mines.
