Simon Hinter is a gem waiting to be discovered. This German music geek has been creating music for many years with some splendid releases on smaller labels like Phil Holland, while also boasting a selection on Osunlade’s mix CD. But it’s only recently that he is beginning to become more recognized, with this latest release on the ever-hot Freerange label.

Why do we like his sound? Simple: it’s raw and it’s got funk! Filtered loops, chunky basslines, catchy melodies— it’s all there in spades! All three orignal tracks are pure distillations of this rising DJ’s trademark style. As a bonus, Wolf and Quintessentials buddy KRL get back in action with a fab, sultry remix. This will make you want to make love!

The release is a tribute to the class 90’s hip-hop sound with it’s big rumbling kicks, dusty horn and piano samples and rumbling bass. Crooks and Lowdown are definitely the heftier tracks on the EP, the likes of which we haven’t seen from Saine in a couple of years at least. Our premiere track Cherish is just a bit lighter with its mellower, trippy horns, jovial melodies and easy-going percussion. This friends, is vintage Saine. The final track on the EP, Finesse, is perfectly titled and would have found a good home on his beat tape last year (those strings though wow!).

Fear not wax collectors as this is not it for Saine this year, he’s got something else coming out soon. Needless to say, we all know what 2020 has been like for musicians. Please buy and support the music if you have the means to do so. The Cherish EP is out now on Bandcamp and will be available for streaming this coming Friday.

After nearly two decades of silence, Brian “Javonntte” Garret has since re-established himself within the deep house realm. Returning to the scene in 2016, he has released a plethora of quality records on label such as Let’s Play House, Hardmatter, proving that he is indeed here to stay. The newest release from Quintessentials, “How Is Club246”, a basic 4-track, is anything but. The EP serves as somewhat of a retrospective, wherein Javonntte pays homage to his musical past, specifically his 90’s motor city Chicago roots.

Quintessentials is a label that promotes, you guessed it, quintessential underground music. Known for putting out, no-nonsense, softly produced, raw underground house, Javonntte has certainly met the criteria.

Our choice “Remember”, the first on the EP, features everything you could ask for from a Chicago-Style house banger. The track contains two main motifs, Javonntte’s poetic vocals, as well as classically crisp and dynamic deep house. What makes this track so special is that it’s not overly layered, nor lacking in any way. The elements of the song have been boiled down to the necessities, creating a cohesive and nuanced mix. The title of the EP begs the question, “How Is Club246”, and Javonntte does an exceptional job in painting a vivid picture of a thriving, diverse venue that he is clearly still very much infatuated with. As cliche as it sounds, this is the kind of track that transports the listener to another era, breeding jealousy for those who were able to witness such a thriving time in house music.

“What is Club246” is releasing on 30 April.

Bogota-based, windbreaker-rocking househead Felipe Gordon has steadily been building his repertoire. In addition to co-running Nómada Records, the producer has quietly lined up contributions for the likes of Toy Tonics, W&O Street Tracks and now German deep house mainstay Quintessentials. The latter comes in the form of a solo EP, Mi Casa, Su Casa, a four track collaboration that clearly makes sense stylistically; Gordon’s moody, key-laced deepness being a perfect fit for a label that has consistently churned out quality releases in that very vein.

The A1 track (and our premiere), “Su Casa, Mi Casa”, initiates with a shortly-looped keystab reminiscent of Purple Velvet’s “Back On The Boulevard” and shuffling hats and claps. Shortly after, a low-hanging bassline and Spanish talking vocals join a jazzy run of piano licks, creating a nice midtempo house groove. It’s a combo representative of the producer’s aesthetic; syncopated and quirky beats mixed with hardware synths and jazz samples.

As for the rest of the record, “Gangster Fass” is a smooth as hell, dusty flip dripping with hazy flavor. Meanwhile, “Ella Va (There She Goes)” and “Arpegios Extendidos” gear up for the dancefloor; the former giving nod to the likes of Glenn Astro and the latter engaging in a fun, almost garagey affair. The combo makes for a solid and variously useful record, and a nice entry into the rising Colombian’s discography. Word has it he’s got a few slick releases coming up for the year too, and his Nómada recently debuted their vinyl series. Eyes up on this young flyguy from Bogota.

For his upcoming release, he has contributed a four track EP to a label that has been making some noise of late as well. Quintessentials, a brand that is focused on the rawer, soulful side of house is a perfect fit for S3A whose sound falls in line with other contributors such as Borrowed Identity and 4004. Of the four songs on the EP, we got the opportunity to premiere the A1 “Dick Jones Track”, which recently got airplay on Laurent Garnier’s November episode of his monthly radio show It Is What It Is.

Deep, warm chords paired with a swung cowbell and hat rhythm in the early moments of “Dick Jones Track” immediately serve as a foreshadowing of what’s to come. Tastefully chopped vocals hint at what you should be doing (dancing!) and if your feet aren’t already moving then the low rumbling bassline that makes an appearance should immediately change that. Shuffling shakers further compliment the groove into the break where there’s a change up into an uptempo diced boogie salad which is sure to be the cause of some sweaty dancefloor moments. Né en Roumanie et basé en Allemagne, Borrowed Identity a su se tailler une solide réputation au cours de ces dernières années. Influence musicale riche, il s’emploie à osciller entre musique ethnique, disco, jazz, house, techno ou hip-hop. Ayant joué dans la plupart des clubs dans le monde, il sait piquer l’attention de son public quel que soit le lieu et le moment. Il fond alors styles et intensités tel un caméléon se fondant au décor.

Inspiré par des producteurs tels que Larry Levan, DJ Harvey, Moodymann à Larry Heard ou encore Robert Hood, Borrowed Identity signe sur des labels tout aussi prestigieux que variés : Quintessentials, Ostgut Ton, Home Taping, Circus Company, Homesick, ou encore Mistress. Sa musique est profonde, pleine de musicalité et de samples très « soul » judicieusement utilisés. Mr G le considère d’ailleurs comme « un des leaders de la nouvelle école ». Sa musique est jouée par les plus grands: Laurent Garnier, Mike Huckaby, Detroit Swindle, Len Faki, Move D, KiNK ou encore DVS1 pour ne citer que.

On pourra bien évidemment compter sur le talent de Kris Guilty pour garder la barre haute avec sa justesse inébranlable. Pour ceux qui ne le connaissent pas encore : Guilty est un DJ/producteur originaire de Montréal. Au fil des ans, ce passionné de musique en tout genre s’est construit une collection de vinyls impressionnante. Mélomane aguerri, souvent discret, impressionne à chaque fois qu’il se hisse aux platines. Ses passages en club sont souvent sporadiques et toujours très attendus !

Le nom en dit long sur le personnage, « Borrowed Identity » ne s’est jamais soucié de la façon dont on devait le classer. Celui-ci produit sans s’associer à un genre en particulier. Selon ses dires, il emprunte à la musique ethnique de ses amis et ses trouvailles insoupçonnées dénichées dans les magasins de vinyles ou sur internet. Cette ouverture d’esprit lui permet de ne jamais se borner à un type de musique et d’alterner entre le classique, l’ambiant, la house, l’électro ou encore le hip hop.

L’audace de Borrowed Identity lui vaut plusieurs sorties d’EP sur des labels tels que Mistress recording, Quintessentials ainsi que Home Taping. Son dernier EP XXX se voit quant à lui signé sur le très prolifique label parisien Circus Company.

Le producteur roumain, maintenant résidant allemand, a su opter, cette fois-ci, pour un son direct et élémentaire. Effectivement, XXX possède une certaine homogénéité et une agréable simplicité oscillant entre le house et le techno. Pour le nom de l’EP, pas besoin d’aller chercher très loin. Une simple écoute de « Trans Trans Trans », et ses samples tirés tout droit d’un film porno, suffisent! Après sa fructueuse collaboration avec Mechanical Soul Brothers sur l’EP « Caps and Chord », Borrowed Identity récidive avec « Scene » pour notre plus grand plaisir. Une coproduction qui fonctionne encore une fois à merveille. L’EP se termine plus sagement sur des airs de vacances avec un décor idyllique rempli de vagues, de fruits exotiques et de palmiers dessinés langoureusement par les synthés et vocals de « Life ».

XXX, un EP qui nécessite plusieurs écoute. À écouter et réécouter. Disponible dès le 17 juin prochain.
