Burnin Music bossman Pegasvs returns with his first new material in several years, and it’s a classy collection that’s been worth waiting for. ‘(No) Peace’ begins the journey: a languid slice of ambient / downtempo beauty with hypnotic spoken word vocals from MA.MOYO which eases you into the EP in meditative fashion.

‘Take It’ ushers us more towards the dancefloor with some mellow synth-funk stylings and punchy raps from The S.O.S. weaving in and out of Twyla’s effortlessly yearning vocals. ‘Traffic Jam’ is a sumptuous patchwork of deep house motifs, where Rhodes chords, funky guitar flecks and plump bass tones interplay beautifully, and ‘La Nuit’ rounds off in stripped-back Detroit house style—all murky chord stabs, throbbing low end and classic drum beats.

KMA60 and Burnin Music are excited to present a new offering by Pletnev (formerly Ponty Mython). Kicking off 2023 with a release by Pletnev means a lot to us as it’s the same artist (under a different alias) that we released 5 years ago when we started Burnin Music.

A very colourful array of music on this record. It is a true journey into Pletnev’s ultra cinematic palette of sounds. Pure ’90s ambient acid house / techno / breakbeat vibes. The pace of ‘Wandering Mind, Go F Yourself’, the restrained laid back aspect of ‘Water Can Keep Your Secrets Too’, the trance of ‘The Last True Gentleman On Earth’ and the perfect round up that is ‘When The Job Is Done’ allows this EP to hit all the necessary nostalgia and newbie exposure. An instant classic.

Maiden Voyage is the latest EP from rising London-based French producer, Run Bass. Coming to us by way of London-based label, Burnin Music, this EP displays Run Bass’ knack for summertime retro-fitted electronic. Utilizing entirely analog equipment and old-school drum machines, this EP is an assured, funky, yet laid-back collection of tracks.

“Across Borders” is a gorgeous opener that sets the tone for the rest of the EP. The track opens with a decisively laid-back drum pattern and wobbly synths, but quickly picks up in momentum as the modular synth-line and bass kick into gear. Some high-note keys and plucked-string-like synths pepper the main riff, lending the track some unexpected tension to its languorous tone. This all sets the stage for the track’s show-stopping late drop, where all the elements crescendo in a fuzzed-out, modular cornucopia. With “Across Borders”, Run Bass proves himself an expert at creating a retro summer vibe, but with a few tricks up his sleeve, too.

Pegasvs, the moniker by which London-based DJ, Thomas Lesnier, currently operates under, returns with his first track of 2021, “Oscillations (Live Mix)”. This track marks his first since his 2020 Tropical House cut, “Closer to the Sun”, which saw the producer straying from rugged Tech-House for a much sunnier and laid-back sound.

With “Oscillations”, Lesnier doubles down on this new sonic direction, delivering an epic slow-jam jazz cut with live saxophone and guitar (courtesy of Matt Grenz and James King, respectively). The track feels like a warm, gentle summer breeze, wafting up and immediately putting you in a serene headspace. The track opens with bubbly synths and clinking percussion sticks, which are soon met with a more typical hi-hat pattern and bass-line that subtly builds in tension, culminating in Grenz’s stunning sax solo. The track seems to add on new elements as if it were cruising down a beach-road during sunset and picking up an assortment of hitchhiking friends. There’s an almost symbiotic, utopian feeling that emerges as the track goes on–– nothing feels forced, nor out of place; everything just gels.

Considering the year we have all had, this track arrives as a balm for our weary spirits. It offers a taste of what we need after a year of crisis and rampant anxiety. The track embodies a kind of back-and-forth, an “oscillation”, if you will, over how music can respond and provide solace to us in times of great distress.

UK label Burnin Music is bringing us their 5th release after previous successful offerings from Ponty Mython, Leonidas & Kay Suzuki, Michael Iwatsu and of course label head Pegasvs himself. Their sparse discography is a testament to their drive to spend the time finding unique producers that fit within their mould. Welcoming Leipzig via Porto-based Salomo to their ranks with the Hesitate EP, it’s another strong addition to their growing roster.

Today we are premiering the title track and A1 on the record. Hesitate starts off with deep atmospheric pads and a big upfront kick. A twinkling cosmic lead comes into the fray as the bouncy bassline makes an appearance as well. The pads evolve into a jazzier version of themselves as the clattering percussion brings the track to its full-fledged rhythm. A sneaky subdued acid line pokes it’s head through sometimes but never really makes a true appearance, evolving the track with some tension just as strategically buried vocals complete the composition. Overall this is a smooth late night jam that we can see having its moments on the dancefloor.

The rest of the EP offers up plenty of emotional melodies, bouncy basslines and various styles that make this a complete package. Be sure to pre-order your copy.

After a promising debut release in 2019 on his own imprint Burnin Music Recordings, Pegasvs returns in 2020 with a track called “Mojo”.

The song is an hommage to the classic old school sound we like so much with a contemporary deep house twist. Sampling an obscure documentary on Detroit techno the track praises The Electrifyng Mojo: a mysterious radio presenter who shaped a generation of music-lovers in Detroit, throughout southeastern Michigan and Canada and was of importance to the development of Detroit techno.

The result is a 5 mins long journey, led by a deep bass, obsessive percussion sounds and a stomping kick, which take its listeners into a dark basement of Detroit City….

You started as a beatmaker at a young age. How did you get to start producing house tracks?
Genres was less a thing than style to me. Still to this day. Back in the late 90s, early 2000s, broken beat was bridging the gap between uptempo club music and downtempo hiphop so well Most of my favorite radio show would play both styles. Think of IG Culture, Dego, Kaido, even Madlib. It was a huge inspiration and I just followed that path. I still have many bruk or house demos that i did on pause tapes or, later, on the EPS 16+ sampler – my first gear ever. However, what caught the attention to my mentors was my hiphop beats, they were probably simpler, and it was a template to make me progress.

Your itinerary and evolution as an artist is out of the ordinary, with you having travelled the world and even relocated to Kyoto, Japan for a period of time.
There’s a little misconception that i could clear here. I hadn’t travelled that much before being a young man, although i already had the privilege to see a few of the countries where my favorite music came from, the UK and the United States. I was more of a countryside boy with city leisures, thus, i spent the bigger chunk of my teenage years in my room trying to craft music. It was a good way to escape other difficulties i had at that time.

What attracted you to the country of the rising sun and what led you to be interested to Japan and its culture?
It was sort of a happy accident. Having a part of my family located in Sweden and China, i tried to study abroad in those two places, in order to finally connect a bit with them. (Un)fortunately, i’ve been rejected for both applications – snubbed by “highly intellectual” university teachers.. Anyway, next thing you know, i found out there was a vacant seat at the Kyoto University of Technology, and i happened to move there for a little moment. It coincided with the release of a hiphop album i had fully produced, what allowed me to connect with staples from the scene, and ialso made a couple of good friends in the process.

How did you experience your initial contact with Japanese culture? How did the Nippon culture influence your growth as an artist?
Japan helped me on a couple of aspects: getting more creative freedom. Nothing is that impossible, probably. And how to rethink my creative process: working with the minimum for instance, or re-using old parts. Changing the purpose of tools, of stems, their role. Some parts become poetic, other went to become systems. Things then took another turn: instead of waiting for inspiration, i would get inspired by craftsmen. Just wake and bake, something good will probably lie amongst the piles of music you create.

You’re also a graduate from architect school. How did find a balance ( or symbiosis) between your interest for that field of expertise and your passion for music?
I see it all as the same. It’s a matter of vibrations and space. We hear with our skin first. The same way we apprehend a space. It’s all a feeling before anything. We tend to lose that both in music and architecture. Technology, trends, it all push us not to feel. You can design something generous out of a screen. It has to be initiated in another place. Mind is that holy place.

Your sound is mature and rich with jazz, funk, and hip hop influences. Not only that but you’ve managed to fuse the aesthetics of these sounds with the essence of house music and create floor proper digs and complex deep house explorations. How did you come to be in contact with jazz, hip hop and funk? What were your main influences that you believe really impacted how you listen to music and how you approach the creative process of music production?
I barely listen to music these days. Hardly search for it. I like to discover music in a moment. An article, a recommendation, a tune on the radio. I might hear music in a painting, or in a daily episode. I find my inspiration in energy. As a matter of fact, a comfortable dance floor really is a thing. As for Hiphop, it was just the environment. Quality hiphop, albeit already mainstream at that time, was everywhere to be found, TV & Radio, although the reception was not as wide as now. I just loved the energy and beat culture so much. Then got a chance to meet some artists easily, while looking for records. I had a good knowledge of Jazz, deep funk, MPB or English prog rock, that helped a bit.

What directs your thought process when you’re producing a dancefloor dig in contrast to producing an explorative or atmospheric track?
Your sound is reminiscing of a golden age of house music when legendary artists like Kerri Chandler, Jovonn, Chez Damier, Ron Trent and others use to rule over the domain. Do you believe their sound is now frozen in time and be part of electronic music history house music and be used in sets or can it inspire a new generation of artists to replicate its aesthetics while exploring what modern production gear can add to it?
You named the masters. Their music, although it has marked an era, is timeless on so many levels. The quality and intensity of production, the emotions it captures.
These songs have also been designed and shaped with tools that possessed a full electro magnetic intensity. And these musicians conveyed a full part of their collective and personal history through music – these tools amplified it.
It would be pretentious, and wrong, to think any of us here can ever replicate any bit of that.
That said, it’s great if a few can extend the legacy.

Do you feel like you, along with certain other artists, are an heir of that era ?
I guess we have parts of this legacy in our hands. We should take care of it, take it to a good place. While some sides of the club music business worry me – and it surely got far from its roots – we also have to acknowledge all the good music that is released those days. Many of the pioneers continue to innovate, and to mentor the new generation. Look at the number of talents Theo Parrish or Kai Alce brought to light, DJs and/or producers, It’s amazing. When i listen to the craft of, say, Stefan Ringer, Kyle Hall, or Byron… they carry this torch.

Are there any current artists from all genres that pique your interest and impact your work? Any artists that collaborating with them brings a lot of added value to your work?
I’m extremely inspired by music that’s spontaneous. As for electronic, dance, if i had to give 3 names.. I would probably say Marcellus Pittman, Kuniyuki Takahashi, Linkwood too. Some music that is rich in texture, simple and essential at the same time. I really enjoy the craft of Hanna too. Those dreamy pads, instantly recognizable. And i can’t forget Waajeed, who is bringing something new and fresh.
I also took a lot of inspiration from many other fields, the works of Debussy, the last album of Eiko Ishibashi, the electromagnetic sculptures of Takis, impressionistic painting, photography, poetry. I always try to get infos about each artist process. In that regard, collaboration expanded my spectrum too. Working on music with DJ Spinna… it just took me to the next plateau. We have different way to craft a song, and I guess our approaches complimented each other very well – He has that spontaneity, yet an immense sense of detail, and all this knowledge of music, i’m learning from him every time, cherishing every minute we spend together making music or talking about it.

What is your favorite piece of equipment in the studio? While playing in front of a crowd?
My trusty SP1200. traded my first sampler for it (what a bargain right???) aside of that, an old ensoniq keyboard and a pair of Technics, i never really had much equipment. Still waiting for my first pair of speakers.

You seem to use social media in an efficient “to the point” way. Do you believe it has become necessary to have a constant presence on social media in order to stay relevant? What is your approach towards the use of social media?
I’m just tired of it a bit. It could be a good platform to share more than gig dates and new records, maybe to expand the artistic spectrum of musicians. But the result is a ton of ego tripping and ugly random photos. So… i might keep my time and energy for music, and hire a real PR maybe?

What’s next for Hugo LX ?
Lots of new music. Patiently completing my album, i also have 2 EPs ready. Lots of remixes.
Some stuff in Japan, again. Music for images, video content.
I also want to make my touring schedule a bit more intelligent, thinking about it now…
Let’s see!

Shout outs?
Yes. i wanna thank Hermon Mehari for helping me lots lately. If you don’t know his music, he’s an incredible artist from Kansas City, a tremendous trumpet player, and a great friend of mine.
And respect to Seiji Ono, Theo Terev, DJ Spinna, Kai Alce, The AP’s, Telly Onishi, Satoshi Tomiie, Mido from Menace, Laura and the homie Meftah!

Upbeat, high-energy house tracks don’t usually go for ten minutes. And, depending on your tastes, you might think they’d get a repetitive and draining if they were to. It’s hard to keep many styles of music fresh and engaging for that long, but London’s Michael Iwatsu has took on that challenge with impressive results.Set for a June 15 release on Burnin Music – a label native to his hometown – we’re tempted to spruik this release just for its audacity: two tracks of weird but wonderful house. The original, Fracture, is our premiere. Obviously, we recommend giving it a listen, but the Soulphiction remix on the flip-side is pretty special, too.The original is close to what you’d expect from a quintessential dance-floor journey: long and delicate in its balance of continuity and change. No element in the track feels out of place, yet there’s a big contrast between the major melodic elements of the first and second halves, while the somewhat off-kilter percussion splashes on throughout most of the ten minutes.[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-michael-iwatsu-fracture” /]
This track has a roughness that we like. It sounds like a track made organically and simply, such that plenty of the instrumentation sounds like a series of live recordings.

Soulphiction’s remix out of Stuttgart sounds a bit more automated, which actually rounds off the record quite nicely. It’s deeper, groovier and perhaps a bit more accessible.

One of the best two-track EPs we’ve heard this year, keep an eye and ear out for Burnin Music’s third release this week.

Synqlock Vol. II is a continuation of the hardware-loving duo’s EP of the same name released on Round in Motion in 2013. Expressed through a slew of analog equipment, the music here is a trip through both the cosmos and the dance floor.

From the start, the listener is launched into a journey through space-time via the EP’s 11-minute opener, appropriately titled “Interstellar Meditation”. This beat-less exploration through the mind will continue on the B-side with Undercurrent before being brought back to reality by remixer Al Kassian. This leaves Asteroid, and its “Jackin Acid Dub” as the as the only club-ready originals on the record.

Backing-up the combo of lush chords and spacey leads is everyone’s third favorite drum machine, the TR-707 — which actually serves as a perfect compliment to the mission at hand.

If you consider yourself “in the know” on all things house and disco, then you’re no stranger to Ponty Mython (soundcloud), the rising Lithuanian talent who’s released incredible projects on various imprints including Dirt Crew Recordings, Fina Records, and Better Listen Records. This time around, he’s produced The Black Magic EP, a brilliant afrocentric project, and debut EP for new London based label, Burnin Music Recordings. Compared to the rest of his catalogue, this EP is much weirder; dark and mysterious, the project sounds like something you’d listen to while slinking around an African marketplace on a rainy day. In it’s entirety, the project showcases Ponty’s wide range of musical influences, advanced sampling abilities, and his knack for creating a cohesive, non-homogenous body of work.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/ponty-mython-hidden-object”/]

The final track, “Hidden Object”, is the perfect finisher to a unique outing, and begins with a deep, downtempo groove laden with african chanting, dull horns, hand drums, and bells. The track sets an instant mood and is fully transportive, a journey from headphones to Africa. A simple bassline resounds underneath swirling, trippy synths, building towards a quick and beautiful vocal section that is the absolute high point of a track that eventually breaks down into it’s original, sultry groove.

Ponty Mython’s Black Magic EP is set for release on April 28th and we expect it to fly off the shelves…don’t sleep, kids. Pre-order on Bandcamp now!
