2fox – Kwazi Na [Arusha Records]

Around this time last year, we saw the emergence of the East London duo 2fox, who came out with their first EP Favela on their self-run label Arusha Records. As the name of the release would suggest, these guys are heavily inspired by deep and soulful African and Brazilian culture. This does not only dictate their signature sound but also who the lads choose to collaborate with – having regularly relied upon the likes of Zimbabwean singer Nandi as a vocalist for their tracks.

In a continuation of their previous work, 2fox have decided to bring Nandi back into the fold for their new EP titled Sky. However, this time around, the duo have managed to get the likes of Fluida, Oliver Osborne, and Reece Johnson on remix duties to round out a jam-packed record that includes two brand-new originals from themselves. One of those originals is titled “Kwazi Na” and it features an assortment of brooding synths and jazzy basslines that give off quite the mysterious vibe. These instrumentals, coupled with Nandi’s breathy vocals that go in and out of English and her native tongue Xhosa, create an aesthetic that sounds both exotic and eerily familiar at the same time – making for a captivating listening experience from start to finish.

If you like what you hear, and would like to explore the rest of this 5-track EP, make sure to mark your calendars for March 8th when Sky hits a shelf near you.
