London outfit Kassian continue their broadly-evolving yet highly detailed journey through and beyond sound towards something ever more expansive. Their second release for !K7 Records comes in the wake of creating a dedicated hardware-forward studio in a Northeast London container complex, where they have the freedom to interlink their machines. This renewed focus brought them to Supercontinent EP, named for the ancient geological era when Africa and South America were joined as Pangea.

A reformulation of rhythmic ideas inspired by South African Amapiano and South American Baile Funk governs the two hemispheres of the record. The pair examine and deconstruct dancefloor material, eschewing 4/4 for interlocking shaker patterns, searing acid lines, cracking breakbeats, and vocal samples in Zulu and Brazil Portuguese.

The immediacy of the restless rhythm and bass-led funk of “Yena” forms a sweet spot where double-time and half-time can coexist. The word Yena translates to ‘he / him / man’, and the punchy male vocal loop punctuates the track’s deep swing, enhanced by amapiano log drums sped-up to a glassy pitch.

“Yami” (‘mine’ in Zulu) is a slinkier proposition which sheds prominent percussion in favour of a weighty, fluid, acid-informed bassline undulating from below. Contrasted against its jutting female vocals and sharp synth pads, the track cultivates dancefloor anticipation, accented by skittering percussion and time-stretched acid disintegration.

An ascending percussive riff marks the arrival of “Pulgueiro Baile”, followed closely by break beats and the nostalgia of distinctly British acid electro. While pulguero translates as ‘flea market’ there is nothing random to be found; it is an intentionally future-forward retelling of a vintage sound, replete with a mind-melt breakdown of rave pads.

A dubbed-out groove dominates the bottom-heavy “Sistema Baile”, established by a leading Roland System 1 synth line. It is a groovy, steady roller that chugs and propels and chugs with head-nod hypnotism through an intricately minimalistic approach.

Continuing the vein of transforming their creative process, label bosses Kassian release their 4th EP on their imprint Faux Poly. ‘Intimate Empty Club Room’ delivers rich layered soundscapes full of experimental harmonics and an unwillingness to be tied down to any specific club genre.

The EP explores different senses of space, tone and reverberation, which are characterised in the name of each track; Shimmer, Hollow & Fade. The names themselves reflect the aesthetic of the rooms that the tracks were designed for.

Kassian are about to embark on their debut US tour in October after playing Love International and Madruga Festival over the summer.

An EP of limbo-inducing squelch courtesy of our good friends Latrec aka Andy Bainbridge and Serious Hots, ft. techno flavoured remixes from Bristolian pal Remotif & our very own Matt Cowell & Quinn Whalley as The W.C. Enjoy.

In the furthest reaches of the cosmos, the intergalactic community gathers for the annual Kutika Limbo finals. Reigning champion Latrec draws the first straw and the percussion rolls excitedly as he steps up to the pole.

Kutika glides lithely under the bar, tentacles wobbling to the acid rhythm. He celebrates his victory as the crowd chants in a glitchy alien dialect. “Kutika-tika-tika-tika!”

Second in line, Latrec’s younger brother Dub Mix steps up for his first limbo. Shorter and stockier than his brother, we don’t know what to expect from this one. Once again the percussion rolls, the crowd gasps as his squidgy exoskeleton melts before their eyes, reforming on the other side of the bar – ‘blooooop’. The crowd goes wild “Kut-Kut!”

Next up is The W.C. Events take a strange turn as they forgo the competition, instead they walk to the stage to sweep the band aside, hijacking control of the instruments. Heavy percussive hits twist spacetime with material melting bass throbs. The crowd goes wild as the fabric of reality collapses around them.

Last but by no means least is Remotif, a techno unit resembling a giant cluster of biceps stands staring at the limbo pole, chaos erupting around him. The tempo of the percussion rises in anticipation and acid thunder roars in the background. Remotif picks up the bar, blinks, and hurls it off into the furthest reaches of the galaxy never to be seen again.

It’s been exactly one year since we interviewed Man Power for our MixedBy series. Since then, The Me Me Me founder has launched himself back into the world, returning to some form of normalcy post-COVID. The British maestro is back to throwing regular gigs in his home base of Newcastle and is touring once again, bringing his world-renowned DJ sets back to the masses.

To mark his welcomed return, Man Power has partnered with Finnish imprint Echocentric Records to release his first vinyl record of the year! Titled “Space Walk,” this EP contains a total of 3-tracks and sees Man Power in his element dishing out his signature sounds that have been labeled as ‘intergalactic house.’ However, in his latest rendition, the beats have more of a tribal feeling – resembling something closer to home than some of his extraterrestrial belters.

Case and point, we are premiering the A2 from the record titled “What a Puny Plan.” Like most dance tracks of this variety, I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on the track’s name, but instead, concentrate on its melodies. The song grabs your attention immediately with its gyrating bassline and almost ancestral-sounding percussion. This gives the listener the feeling as if an ancient ritual is about to take place and that Man Power is the shaman leading the procession. Man Power then continues to layer in waves of ethereal synths over menacing horns that give the tune some much-needed gravity – compelling the dancefloor to come together and groove as one. “What a Puny Plan” might be the closest thing you’ll come to having a religious experience at the club and we’re ready to repent for our sins!

Eloi is back with his second release for Everybody In and we couldn’t be so thrilled to close 2022 with his chef-d’oeuvre! The Parisian producer has clearly shown the desire of capturing us in warm, comforting housey sounds with mixed feelings throughout his five tracks.

Let yourself be carried away by the melodic sounds of “Let People Change”, before switching to the acidic bass of “I Think It’s Time”. The cheerful atmosphere in “Nothing New” is nicely broken up by the more tenebrous “Les Textures”. Ending with the deep melancholic voyage offered by “Drums and Distortion” will get you lost in this magic.

“Nothing New” EP is a guarantee, you will not get enough of it!

Rico Casazza was born in Milan, Italy, moved to London when he was 19 years old, and lived there for about 20 years, until he decided to move to Prague, Czech Republic. Rico is a prolific producer, DJ and live act, who has released around two dozen EPs, several albums and plenty of remixes since he started to produce electronic music in 2017.

Rico’s new EP with the title “Escandon” is coming out on Paul Fleetwood’s label Perimeter Junk. While staying connected to his electro and techno roots, Rico Casazza has chosen a more pop-oriented approach on his new release.

“Backstage Segment” is a bright-sounding track with complex rhythms created through smart interaction between synth sounds and drum rhythms.

The title track, “Escandon” is a bit more laid-back, with a nostalgic and melancholic sound. Through sampling the vocals of a female R & B singer, Rico creates a cool and chillout piece of electro pop.

“Seven days” is a lovely electro track with an almost Drexciya-esque vibe and tight drums, deep pads, arpeggiated synths and again very complex rhythms, which makes it a fun track to listen to in every detail.

“Word Fail Someone” has a nostalgic, soulful sound with a hammering bassline and drum section which give the track a strong drive, which creates an interesting contrast against the more relaxed melodic elements in the piece.

“Twozerofour” is an electro/techno track which showcases Rico Casazza’s talent for producing ambient soundscapes. The pads, arpeggiated synths and leads create a trippy and spacey sound together as if “Twozerofour” would be part of a sci-fi movie. It will take both home listeners and dancers on a mental and physical journey.

All in all, Rico Casazza presents an interesting and versatile EP which combines electro, techno, ambient, funk and pop sounds to a unique piece of art.

Soreab presents his debut, self-released album, Muğla’s Chronicles .”I started working on this music project back in 2016, when I lived and worked in Turkey, in Bodrum (Muğla Province) for six months. Each track is informed by episodes that I personally went through while living in Turkey, like a diary of sounds and voices. During my stay there, I imagined myself as a child visiting Turkey for the first time, experiencing the everyday and learning new things for example how to play an instrument, like the Turkish Lute which is present in each track of the LP.”

“I have let this project sit in a folder for some years until lockdown 2020 when in London it felt right to add something new to it, influences I didn’t have when I was in Turkey or simply to dive again into the Aegean Sea from the comfort of my home studio. Whilst keeping it true to its origins, I was able to turn and twist a Turkish Lute into something familiar to my present influences (UK Techno, Leftfield Bass, Dub, IDM, Jungle and especially Club/Rhythm focused Drums and Percussions) fast forward to 2022 and establishing a connection between these two worlds.”

SAUL enlist the help of talented friends for their new EP – a feel good, summer-ready soundtrack, bursting with uplifting synths and groove-heavy broken beatsSAUL, is a joint project from the minds of Jack Stephenson-Oliver (keys player of fellow Rhythm Section INTL signee, Vels Trio) and producer Barney Whittaker, aka Footshooter.

With the success of their individual projects – Vels are soon to embark on a tour across the UK and Europe and Footshooter is growing from strength to strength following releases on Astral Black and Dance Regular – it’s exciting to hear what the duo will think up next.
When the two of them get together their jam sessions result in a fusion of jazz and broken beat. Atmospheric keys and synths interweave with programmed drums, laying the perfect ground for the all star cast of featured artists assembled for this record.

Collaboration is a key element to the creative output of SAUL, shining a light over individual and collective talents. Their second release, Mutualism, promises a stellar line-up of musical interaction. In the words of Barney, “the feature performances are all very different, the way they worked on the tracks really brought each one to life in a big way”.
The project starts with the sounds of sunrise. Opening with The Light, is Allysha Joy, a member of another group on Rhythm Section’s roster, 30/70. She crafts uplifting melodies that move gracefully through bouncy Rhodes chords. This track shines with sun-focused energy and up beat grooves that provide the perfect soundtrack for long summer festival days.

On Coalesce, featuring South London MC Natty Wylah, lofty, cloud-like atmospheres are built above classic Moog synths. The hypnotic bass and lead notes are equal parts hopeful, eerie and curious, matching the optimistic promise offered by Wylah’s hook: ‘don’t you want to find somewhere better?’. Subjects flow from party-focused lyrics to poetic streams of consciousness as Natty adopts a dreamy sung delivery by the end of the track.

The Ep comes to a serene close with a feature from ‘aden’ – recipient of the 2021 Fred Perry x Nicholas Daley Music Grant. The early image of sunlight may have faded, but the energetic focus of the project never dies. Swirling synths circle around sharp bass stabs, with a driving bassline taking over into the hook.

Other major features include the unmistakable tone of Lex Amour. During Flowers, her laid back, spoken style is accompanied by a slowed down G-Funk-inspired instrumental. With an illustrious list of collaborators already to her name (such as Kojey Radical, Wulu, George Riley and Ego Ella Mae) and sell out shows across the country, she makes her lyrical prowess evident. Lex effortlessly switches between rhythmical flows to hypnotic layered melodies – elevating the production to another level in the process.
The synergy between producers and vocalists is evident; the collaborations equal far more than the sum of their parts. In ‘Mutualism’ we see Saul’s vision fully come to fruition. The synergy is apparent, the possibilities – endless and the respect – mutual.

Aside from the Vocal guest appearance, Mutualism is also packed with instrumental cameos. SAUL turn to Ezra Collective’s sax player James Mollison on the track Can’t Wait. The seasoned five-piece are set to perform alongside the modern day jazz pioneer Kamasi Washington later this year. Mollison shows his range on this song as energy flows from soaring highs to long sustained lows, allowing a hint of dub influence to come to light.

SAUL’s newest release signals two musicians at the height of their artistic expression, drawing resources and influences from wherever is inspiring them most. This collaborative methodology produces a sound that is constantly evolving, illuminating new faces and sounds with each project that passes.
