From uptempo deep cuts, to jazzy house, slow trance and acid broken beat… Broken District again proves its will to explore uncharted musical territories. “Brokenbits Vol. 3” is the latest instalment in their series of compilations, featuring productions from the label’s friends and affiliated talents. As always, this new volume explores a wide variety of sounds, with musical works produced by Horatio Luna & Nikodimos, Interface Palm, Slowaxx, and Thermal (Sevenbeatz x Moody Gliani).

Horatio Luna returns to Broken District after his first appearance on Interface Palm’s album (Curated Space, 2022). This time, he kicks off the release with a collaborative track with fellow Melbourne musician and producer Nikodimos. Together, they deliver us “Fly”, a modern jazzy house ballad that really feels like an improvised jam, with Horatio’s bassline answering to Nikodimos’ saxophone and transverse flute notes. Yet, make no mistake, nothing’s improvised: the two Australian artist gives us an intricated, multi-layered production that will hit jazz-heads right in the heart.

Interface Palm again lands his beautiful work on Broken District, with “Digital Day”, following his first mini LP “Curated Space” recently released on the label. This time he produces a high-powered, 130bpm broken / deep house track with a beautiful 80s, lo-fi treatment that will set a rough, hazy mood on dancefloors.

Slowaxx makes his first appearance on Broken District. With “Linn Orchestra”, this Tuscan-based Italian producer takes us on a jazzy, acid, broken beat trip. The track is led by atmospheric pads creating an almost dramatic setting… but they are overlapped with a colourful bass sequence, acid synths and a powerful rhythm (based on the LinnDrum drum machine – hence the title) that brings a peculiar flavour to this odd piece of music. The kind of production that really stick to the Broken District aesthetic.

Closing the compilation on a strong note is Thermal, the joint-project from Bordeaux-based French producers Sevenbeatz and Moody Gliani. They put together “Vice Street”, a downtempo take on trance music with transcending basslines and a strong 4/4 beat built to challenge the best sound system. It’s a really smart production, with its long breaks, strong builds and overall feeling of never-ending electronic journey.

Building on the signature sounds the duo developed on their first full-length LP ‘Debuts’ – that was praised by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Tom Ravenscroft (BBC 6Music), and Okayplayer – ‘Back & Forth’ is a deeper and more radically aesthetic approach to its predecessor. Nikitch & Kuna Maze expand on their soulful and subtle combination of jazz-flavours and the syncopated beats of broken beat and UKG; the album sees the duo working with collaborators for the first time, such as Brazilian singer-songwriter Joao Selva, while also experimenting with their own vocal material.

Influenced by the likes of John Carroll Kirby, Kaidi Tatham, Byron The Aquarius and Moodymann, the duo continues to explore the intersection between jazz and club culture, demonstrated by the sheer musical variety present on the album, spanning from house to broken beat, brit-funk, Brazilian, jazz-funk, and more.

The collaboration project between musician Nicolas Morant aka Nikitch, and Brussels-based producer Edouard Gilbert aka Kuna Maze, began when the duo met at the Chambery Jazz Conservatory in France. Before attending university to study jazz, both artists had trained in classical music while growing up in the Lyon countryside.

Both prominent artists and DJs in their own right, last year Nikitch released his debut album ‘Chromatism’ on Casamance, while Kuna Maze dropped a new EP titled “My Fish Is Burning” on Tru Thoughts, held down a residency on Kiosk Radio and launched his live band. Career highlights for the duo to date include performances at the prestigious EFG London Jazz Festival, being remixed by broken beat legend Domu and remixing acid jazz pioneer Toshio Matsuura.

Nikitch & Kuna Maze have been on the road touring ‘Back & Forth’ since its release, alongside drummer Victor Pascal. Shows included the prestigious ​​Le Botanique. Brussels, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, London and Band on the Wall, Manchester, as well as festivals such as Dour, Worldwide Sete, and Montreux Jazz Festival.

Broken District was launched in 2018 by Jus Jam, Momla and Antwan. The label explores alternative styles, blending influences of house, jazz, hip-hop, funk and soul. With seven releases under their belt, this very slick imprint is supported often by the likes of Worldwide FM, XLR8R and Phonica.

On this new offering Broken District brings us ‘90s Anxiety’, a maxi EP by label co-founder Jus Jam, who takes us on a deep exploration into his hazy musical world. His music is often described as dreamy and contemplative, with sharp beats and smooth bassline, ‘90s Anxiety’ does not disappoint. Heavily inspired by nineties underground club culture, the EP travels through UK garage to dreamy hip-hop, from early electro to new jack swing.

On opener ‘Daydream’ and its B-side sister ‘Ryoji’s Dream’, the producer delivers two dreamy compositions crafted with the forward thinking hip-hop head in mind, touching on trap, seinen manga soundtracks and David Lynch’s surreal cinema. ‘Neopolis Sound’ is a subtle homage to early electro and breakbeat, old sci-fi movies and 90s video games. ‘Higher Sense’ is a modern and dreamy vision of breaks and jungle with elements of jazz. Our premiere comes from one of the three bands of renowned Melburnian saxophonist, Josh Kelly. JK Group’s Nutha One begins with Kamaal-Williams-esque synth stabs and Josh’s effects- drenched saxophone ringing in the background over snappily syncopated drums. The sax backs off only to coax out a keys solo and strings that, combined, could fittingly soundtrack a summer night stroll down a lively street. The smooth sonic walk turns sharply but purposely left, however, into something more like a run, as a house beat and sax take us to the track’s sudden and dramatic end.

It’s a fun listen, and one worth bookmarking for its December 13 release. Other artists to feature on the record are On-Ly, Antiphon, Foshe and Big Chief.

The beautiful thing about culture is that, in the face of any gloomy situation, there is always a glimmer of light, a cause for hope. No one knows this better than a springboard for new talent such as WotNot (K15, Glenn Astro, Deft, Danvers). Any time a world-weary older generation despairs at the spate of venue closures, tightening nightlife laws and changing values, a new cohort of artists is working hard at finding their place in the musical world; a group who know no better times, and so make the most of their environment, facing the world with optimism and can-do attitude.

In this light, WotNot is introducing Beringei, a broken beat producer whose debut release The People, The Place brings focus to the people and communities that make the London music scene so special. In particular it’s a tribute to the dancers at his MOSSA parties (headliners like John Swing, EMG, Debora Ipekel, Ece Duzgit, Cervo, K15), and the community of artists and minds at the Total Refreshment Centre where he shared a studio with label mate William Florelle and DJ’d on The Docks Studios internet radio station.

Title track The People, The Place hosts syncopated vocals over twisting live bass and shuffling broken beats. Listening (and unavoidably shimmying) to this, it is no surprise that at MOSSA the lights are turned down as low as possible, in tribute to the legendary Plastic People nights that many of this crowd are too young to have experienced, but were formative for Beringei himself.

The vocals and lyrics for Blue Moon were improvised in a single take, and perfectly capture the slinky and sensual but groovy nature of the beat with its delicious bumpy Rhodes and bubbling bass. Wrapping up the release is a wonky, psychedelic remix from William Florelle, whose second WotNot EP will also be out soon.

Sadly the venues this release pays tribute to have since closed, but this EP is not just a snapshot of a beautiful time and place, but a much needed beacon of positivity and a sign of great things to come. Pre-order now.

They say consistency is key, and German imprint Toy Tonics, have it in spades. Since 2012, the label simply haven’t pressed a bad tune. Kickstarting things with scrumptious releases from the likes of Black Loops, COEO and Kapote, these Berlin blacksmiths are yet again chipping away at that next funked-out piece of audio, the world needs to hear. And today, it’s ‘Broken Dub’, from Lyon based artist, Mangabey (Jose Fehner).

With quite the nomadic past, spending his childhood living in caravans between France and Africa (his parents part of a wild theatre troupe), Jose has plenty of influences to draw upon. Having already a firm relationship with Toy Tonics, with the release of his ‘Chicago Memory’ EP a few months back (be sure to suss Folamour’s Remix of ‘GUFM’), the Frenchman comes storming through with the ‘Joy Kill’ EP.

‘The record press is a complicated piece of equipment weighing two tonne, it moulds records by compression…’ Welcome to the B1, Broken Dub. Breaks, compressed drums and West London ad-libs define the piece. A jazz pianist and vintage synth nut by trade, Mangabey brings real character to what’s a steady grind. This one sounds authentically UK, a familiar feel to Jamie XX’s ‘All Under One Roof Raving’. A track best heard in an underground carpark, in the dead of night…or wherever you like really. Oh…and Jose’s only just hit 22, already locking in Fouk and Glenn Astro on remix duties. Watch this space fam!

New Zealander Julien Dyne is a multi-instrumentalist with a long and impressive history of collaborative, live and solo musicianship. He is best known for his solo work as BBE and having worked with the likes of Theo Parrish, Steve Spacek, Andreya Triana and Lord Echo. In addition to this – having remixed the likes of Marcel Vogel, Ghostwave and Leroy Burgess (alongside Frank Booker) – Dyne has also accumulated a number of accolades over the course of a 10-year career including but not exclusive to being hotly tipped by both Moodymann and Gilles Peterson.

Dyne’s new project for 2018 is the 11-track LP, Teal, on Miles Cleret’s legendary Soundway Records. The album, a masterpiece of future soul and afro-percussive house, is more uptempo than what we’re used to from Julien, and it’s a welcome change of pace. The project practically oozes soul while demonstrating Julien’s skills as a multi-instrumentalist and visionary producer. Included are collaborations with fellow New Zealander Mara TK, long term band-mate Ladi6, Fat Freddy’s Drop’s trumpeter Toby Laing, Australian vocalist Tim Guy, and Jazz luminaries Jonathan Crayford and Jon Bell.

While it’s hard not to discuss each track in excruciating detail, we’ll take a look at the second track on the album, “YouYou.” Julien’s synth-work is on display from the jump, as big reverbed hits ring out before the percs start knockin’. This track is a certified vibe-bringer, and if we stripped most of the instrumental away, the bassline alone would cause a ruckus. Playful arpeggios and Julien’s masterful use of delay add so much movement to the track, making it impossible for listeners to get bored. Most impressively, “YouYou” feels like an organized live jam. What more could you want?

As a whole, this is a body of work fit for the dancefloor and for home listening. Double threats like this shouldn’t be missed, so grab the double vinyl and add it to your already impressive collection of tunes. This premiere comes from the second release from 00:AM, Montreal’s very own party turned imprint. If you’re not familiar with this trio so far, it’s most definitely worth checking out their MIXED BY interview from last March. Having thrown some of Montreal’s best parties for many years, showcasing local talent as well as importing top deejays from around the globe, it comes as no surprise that the lineup for 00AM002 is as fresh as ever. The crew show off their knack for A&R with their second VA release, crafted yet again from a delicious pairing of local and international talent.

Just two releases in, 00:AM have already shown that they’re one to watch for. But then again, we could’ve told you that from the get-go! 00AM002 is out now, available to buy here or at your favourite record shop.
