Low Tape, a rising star from Russia, is one of the producers currently making a name for himself while championing the recently refreshed electro sound. Finding a home for his newest “Walking the Streets” EP on London’s Of Paradise imprint, a label with a focus on the tougher side of electronic music, the Russian producer effortlessly squeezes into their limited but already distinguished catalogue. Blending heavy hitting drums, lo-fi textures and acid lines, Low Tape is right at home amongst cohorts Trudge, Baltra, Shedbug and others who have made an appearance on the label.

Although I cannot speak for all the writers at Boltings Bits, I must say, Parisian producer Trudge holds a place near and dear to my heart. In fact, I would say his early releases on labels like Shall Not Fade and Of Paradise are primarily responsible for igniting my recent obsession with the Lo-Fi genre. If I had to pinpoint the specific track that lured me in like a moth, I would give the credit to his tune “Give,” which puts on a masterclass on how artists can bring about powerful emotions through simplest of tools.

This formula of using forceful, yet simplistic Lo-Fi instrumentation in combination with moving vocal samples is something Trudge has perfected, and it’s on full display in his latest record “Negative Spaces.” This EP is set to be released by Shall Not Fade’s influential sister label Lost Palms, who are the UK taste-makers that have brought us projects from the likes of Baltra, Anthony Fade, DJ Boring, Earth Trax, and X-Coast.

The A1 from the release titled Last Night She Left The Ground, starts out with a hectic assortment of drums, bass, and hi-hats but gradually begins blending in an array of dreamy synths and pads to give the song a lighter, more elated feel than what it’s opening moments might signify. After the build-up, Trudge elects to break the tension by introducing muddled, female vocals that increase the moodiness of the tune. When all these elements are taken in together, they act to create an atmosphere that is touching, but vague in nature. For instance, who is this girl speaking? What does she want? Is she in need of help? I think these questions that the song conjures up are done intentionally and are meant to have the listener answer them depending on the mood they are in when they’re listening. This makes “Last Night She Left The Ground” a tune that can be utilized for many occasions; whether that be moments of pure euphoria on a dancefloor or solemn periods of self-reflection in front of your laptop.

French producer Trudge (soundcloud) has been making a name for himself over the last year with a succession of releases and a unique live show. The «Split EP» with Die Roh (Sagats & DJ Octopus), released last summer by Axe On Wax sublabel, Axe Traxx, established a left-field house sound with elements of lo-fi – blown out kicks, grainy samples and lush pads. His releases this year (one on Dance Around 88, and another on Shall Not Fade sublabel, Lost Palms) show a sonic development, experimenting with heavier sounds (‘Restless’) as well as emotive dream-house (‘Deep Eyes Blue Skies’). This latest 12” sees Trudge explore a darker mood with nods to a diverse range of styles.

«Buried Hopes» is a 4-track EP released by Of Paradise. The fourth installment of the London label, the record is a fitting follow-up to Baltra’s double LP, «No Regrets». Our premiere today, the A1 track, ‘Memorial For A Buried Hope’ is a haunting opener that’s equally infectious as it is ominous. An overdriven kick and distorted chords open the 8-minute piece, and are gradually accompanied by driving hi-hats and fuzzy snare. The atmospheric haziness is grounded by the bass, which sometimes slips towards an acid sound and provides the main melodic motif. High strings build tension half-way through the track, signalling the peak. ‘Memorial For A Buried Hope’ is a slow-burner that invites the listener to lose themselves in its meditative textures, the pounding rhythms maintain a forward momentum that suggests the energy of New York techno. The following track, ‘Sad But Necessary’ moves further into the acid realm and compliments the opener. The B-side offers inventive, juxtaposing takes on jungle. ‘Drop’ features slow breakbeats and hazy pads, while the closer, ‘And I’m Losing My Mind Again,’ is intensely quick, the breakbeats fading in-and-out as choral pads evoke a religious atmosphere, ending the record on an emotional high.

Following the path taken in the first release, the 2^nd showcases lo-fi, filthered house with the addition of vocal samples that simply perfectly complements the listening experience, adding  “the layer” to its tracks that makes it stick to your mind and asking you to press that back/replay button again and again

Two tracks of the EP are produced by Parisian producer Trudge. The first one entitled “Give”, delivers a smooth groove with a mesmerizing vocal sample, with a driving, sometimes broken beat. The 2^nd track, “series7”, is a upbeat track that boasts a summerish, filthered melody that is distorted throughout the track as if to say “screw your expectations”.

The other part of “Split” are produced by Sagats and DJ Octopus, by their powers combined, aka “Die Roh”. Active since 2012,their experience as a pair is demonstrated in both tracks. “Coming out” is another smooth track with a beat that juggles very well with the drums and hi-hats, along with vocals  that demands for you to lip-sync along after the first play. “Her first time”, with vocals that suggest that maybe its not her first time, offers a funky dancefloor proper groove.

Overall great EP that is a proper follow-up to the first release on Axe Traxx. With releases like these, Axe Traxx is definitely a label to monitor closely.
