Kicking off the year with an energetic mix by the Tel Aviv native, Berlin-based rising star DASCO. DASCO’s music is all about the dance-floor’s energy, and hers is infectious. She is one of these artists truly vibing behind the decks. Her latest Hör set confirms how much of a positive and colorful spirit she is spreading to the lucky dancers around her.

“My goal”, she says, “is to lift people up through my music and spread love and happy energy across the world”. 2022 has kept her busy, touring around Europe as well as playing in her current home of Berlin with a recent debut at the infamous Panorama Bar.

She also recently launched her new label Bisexuality exists, which aims “to normalize bisexuality in today’s society and to inspire people to live how they feel”, and we can’t wait to hear more about what she has in mind with this new project. She hasn’t planned to slow down as she has just released her Powerful Woman EP on Bristol’s ever influential Shall Not Fade label on January 13th. Keep your eyes ears out because one can’t escape the feeling that Dasco’s momentous year has just lifted off.

Thank you so much for taking the time to record this powerful mix for us! How did you select the tracks for the mix?

Hello guys and thanks for having me!For this mix I selected music which I play in clubs and could also fit for listening at home before or after the party ;)

What’s more important: the track you start with or the track you end on?
The track you start with in my opinion.

How was 2022 for you?
2022 was really great. I played in amazing clubs and Festivals like for example Into The Woods Festival in the Netherlands and also had my debut at Panorama Bar which was pure fun. I also launched my own record label Bisexuality Exists with the first release “Get High With Me”. I was really happy to receive so much love and support from the people.

You just released your ‘Powerful Woman’ EP on Bristol’s ever influential Shall Not Fade label.What a great way to start 2023! Could you share with us the concept behind and talk us through your process?
As a female music producer in a male-dominated industry, I have experienced and seen some of the challenges and discrimination women often must contend with.

In my track “powerful Woman” you can hear me saying the words “powerful”, “strong”. It acts as a reminder to myself as well as to others that we are much more stronger than we think.

It’s important to me to inspire other women through my music and show them that they shouldn’t be afraid to keep doing their thing despite gender discrimination. I would like to encourage others to never be afraid to show themselves to the world in their own authentic way and to be proud of who they are, to be proud of their femininity and independence.

You moved to Berlin in 2014, right? Were you already involved in the music scene as a Dj in your hometown Tel Aviv before?
Yes that’s true. I moved to Berlin in 2014 but I‘m visiting Tel Aviv often, especially in winter time.

I was involved in the music scene and started to DJ before I moved to Berlin but I understood quite fast that if I would like to make it as a DJ And

Music Producer, Tel Aviv which is very male dominated is not the right place for me.
Now things there got slightly better though unfortunately you can still feel the inequality between women and men. Fingers crossed things will change soon.

How have both cities influenced you as a DJ and producer?
In Tel Aviv I felt like I always needed to prove my worth to others so it made me working really hard.

Berlin influenced me by relaxing me and taking away all the stress of living in Israel and also giving me the freedom and support to do my art and express myself the way I feel like.

Are you particularly permeable to what surrounds you, creatively speaking? If so, how does it influence your DJ focus?
Yes I’m am. I love being on the move, between gigs, visiting new countries, all this inspires me. I am inspired by changes, new places and new people and I always search for new sounds and new adventures. I also really love fresh air and being close to nature which really relaxes me and when I’m relaxed I feel inspired the most.

Do you listen to “club” music in your day to day life or do you reserve it for your digging sessions only?
Yes for sure. I listen to almost all kinds of music at home, depending on my mood. It can be club music, R&B, Pop, Ambient, Jazz, Funk and more. Good music is good music.

You recently founded your own label : Bisexuality exists, focusing on women, non-binary, and LGBTQ + communities. Can you tell us more about it and what you’ll be doing with it?
As a bisexual, it is important for me to normalize bisexuality/ bisexual visibility in the public space and to campaign against biphobia and bi-erasure. It is important for me to represent the bisexual community with pride and with the respect it deserves. I’m planning to release more music on my label this year. Expect the unexpected…

How’s the queer scene in Tel Aviv, and how connected are you with the community there?
The queer scene in Tel Aviv is great and so much fun! Most of the parties I play in Tel Aviv are queer parties and every time the energy there is so liberated! It is like a big happy celebration.

Do you think the identity that a DJ/producer/artist presents on social media is increasingly essential when it comes to being booked? How are you personally navigating through this?
Yes, I think it is quite essential. Times have changed and this days without having social media, maybe not so many people will have the opportunity to know your music.

I’m personally posting often on social media and sometimes I can spend too much time on this. The problem is that with touring and posting regularly on socials, sometimes I don’t have enough time to create new music. I always say that if I didn’t have social media I could probably finish an album. I think though that soon I will let someone else manage my socials so I can focus on the main reason why I’m here in this world which is to lift people up through the music I create.

What’s one club, venue, or party that has had the most impact on you as an artist?
Defiantly Panorama Bar. I went there for the first time I think in 2012, even before I started to DJ. I don’t know why and how to explain this but the energy there is just magical.

Any recent set that really blew you away as a dancer?
I really love Job Jobse’s sets, such a great DJ!

What is the last record you purchased?

The Lisa Marie Experience – Do that to me.

After critically-acclaimed releases on well-established labels such as Pont Neuf, Shall Not Fade and Strctr, Parisian artist Tour-Maubourg enters French label Noire & Blanche with yet another outstanding EP titled ‘Floating On Silence’.

‘Longing For U’ opens up the EP in a beautiful way: Complex drum rhythms are accompanied by smooth instrumentation which enters the track slowly, almost as if the instrumentalists were shy and had to gather their courage – until the saxophone takes over and plays a buoyant solo just before the 4 minutes mark.

‘I Wanna’ is centered around a swung jazz drum beat and sleek bassline played by a double bass while various playful synthesizer melodies join the track here and there and some vocal bits can be heard in the far distance.

While the first two tracks have an almost loungey character, track no. 3, ‘Nite People’, gently invites us to the dancefloor. As the four-to-the-floor kick, swung hi-hats and pointy snares unequivocally tell us to shake our hips, the rest of the ‘house band’ take it a bit more slowly – until the 303-style acid synth comes in and shouts “all right, let’s dance!” and the whole track kicks it up a notch.

The title track, ‘Floating On Silence’ represents exactly what made many of us love the music by Tour-Maubourg: It’s super soulful and sexy, with lovely jazzy melodies and an irresistible groove created by the interplay of drums, bass and percussion, foremost the driving conga rhythm. All in all, a very elegant yet dancefloor-ready deep house track.

Out of all tracks on the EP, ‘Mighty Groove’ is definitely the funkiest one. A palm-muted electric guitar, groovy synth stabs, deep bass line and earworm-inducing lead synth have a get together and the drums and percussion glue everything neatly together to round-off this artful EP by Tour-Maubourg.

Germany’s Tilman inaugurates his new imprint Pleasant Systems this June with the ‘Adventures’ EP, featuring collaborations with Will Buck and Rhode & Brown.

Mainz, Germany based producer and DJ Tilman has been dropping his twist on contemporary house over the past decade on labels such as Shall Not Fade, Life Is For Living and Quality Vibes as well as his own Fine imprint, run in collaboration with Johannes Albert. Here though, Tilman marks a new beginning with the launch of Pleasant Systems, a new imprint designed to shine a light on vintage inspired house sounds from both himself and friends.

Up first is ‘What’s Mine Is Mine’, a collaboration with Brooklyn’s Will Buck which lays down an amalgamation of airy synth pads, choppy bass stabs, bright piano lines and enchanting flute like melodies atop a swinging drum groove. ‘Strawberry Fields’ follows, stripping things back to shuffled percussion, billowing ethereal textures and wandering sub bass tones while fluttering brass tones and resonant leads ebb and flow within.

Eclecticism is the keyword when it comes to the musical taste of LUZ1E. Mostly known for her spirited and soulful New York House she has made herself a name in the realms of fast-paced breaks and Techno. Either way, LUZ1E brings together everything that has that certain punchy power to it.

Having jumped onto the scene in 2017 with her vinyl debut on Lobster Theremin‘s import label UGONGETIT, LUZ1E appears to have taken a bit of hiatus last year – only releasing the tune “Sonic Measurements” as part of a compilation on German label Ghetto Traxx.

Luckily for us, 2020 marks the return of the maestro. LUZ1E joins the Shall Not Fade family with the punchy “Ridin” EP. ‘We have the pleasure of debuting the title track from the release, which blends soulful House sounds with fast Breaks and Techno to create a unique punchy hybrid sound of futuristic dance music.

We are grateful to present yet another stellar workout from Pierre Moritz, co-founder of the Copie Blanche label and an all-around stunning producer known for some of the most infectious unsigned jams around. With releases on Virage, Shall Not Fade, and some on his own, Pierre has demonstrated a real knack for sumptuous, house-indebted tracks—but his latest effort, an 8-track mini album titled 17-21 Rue de Javel, upends any notions that this future master could be anything resembling a one-trick pony. Bursting with smoky funk and low-slung boogie, Pierre’s latest LP is an absolute treasure for anytime of the day; however, Bolting Bits will be premiering one of the mini-album’s more hustling numbers, Dead Calm in Rooms One and Three.

Arriving at the tail-end of the A-side, Dead Calm is one of Pierre’s most worn-in and welcome sounding tunes of his short-yet-prolific career. Juxtaposed against it’s lower-BPM companions, it briskly weaves around the brain like a much-needed breeze on a hot day. Nimble melodies spike and dance around a driving, yet welcome rhythm section. The bass-line anchors the track as its’ shimmering pads and synths pirouette across the coasting percussion. Pierre mentions that the record was born out of good times with close friends. From what we can tell from Dead Calm in Rooms One and Three, he must’ve had some truly glowing times to recount—the whole project oozes with joviality and relaxed confidence. Pre-order your K7 now!

Somewhat of a cult favourite, Shall Not Fade was born out of the city of Bristol in winter 2015 and since then has captured the hearts and minds of us all. They’ve came a long way since their debut release from a young Aussie talent, who unknowingly at the time would go on to become one of the biggest names in electronic music, Mall Grab. The rise of the label has been beautiful to watch and thoroughly deserved, consistently releasing record after record of the highest calibre while continuing to attract superstars; Adryiano, DJ Boring, Skream the list goes on… After establishing themselves in the music scene a new project was unveiled to us all, the sub-label of Lost Palms. Like any sub-label it gave them the adaptability to focus on a more specific sound, a smooth euphoric head-in-the-cloud sound that we are now all too familiar with. Subjoi, Harrison BDP and Demuja are a few names embedded onto the leaves of the Lost Palms.

The beautiful thing about this track is the constantly evolving sound winding and diving throughout the stages to make a piece of art. Frits Wentink, a man of many talents across a multitude of styles. The Netherlands native first burst onto the scene with his first release back in 2012 and from then on has continued to be one of the countries most consistent artists. Frits loves to experiment with warm wobbly synths and we love it too, that partnered with his impeccable dusty grooves is a sure recipe for success, which has lead him to release on some highly established labels such as Heist, Wolf & Shall Not Fade. He’s also the proud head honcho at both Will & Ink and Bobby Donny, two outstanding outlets. An extremely talented and busy man, which is why we are very excited to bring him onto the magazine for a little chat.

INTERVIEW

Hi Frits, it’s a huge pleasure to have you on the magazine! The whole team is very excited for it. What have you been up to lately?
I  did a couple of remixes last month, and produced the soundtracks to two films. But most of all I have been busy building new synthesizers. I took on the challenge to start building my own Eurorack modules a few months ago. But i have now already branched out to other formats such as MOTM and chip based modules. In the past i had some experience building midi controllers but never tried soldering actual analog audio circuits.  So recently i started with some simple 4 channel mixers and some LFO and VCA circuits. Over the past few months I learned so much and realised that its actually more doable than I thought.

I try to keep everything diy. From the woodwork of the cabinets, the design of the panels, the actual soldering, the design of the PCB’s to the C++ coding of some of the chips. Its a such an amount of work, but once things start working it is an absolute thrill. The analog diy virus really caught me.

From growing up in the Netherlands to your first release in 2012, where did everything start for you musically? Has electronic music always been your burning passion or do your roots dig deeper into music?
I have always done computer music as far as I remember. A thank you to my very supportive parents is in place here. I must have been 10 when i got a Korg Electribe ES-1 sampler for my birthday. And things just went from there. Not long after that i started buying and playing records. The records i bought back then were really fast and driven, but all that hard fast techno had a nice swing and groove to it. It wasn’t that static. I think that is something that still sticks with me.

As proof of your Instagram you certainly know your way around a keyboard, how long have you been playing?
I get that question a lot. For some reason there is a misconception about me being classically trained. I’m not, and actually don’t regret starting playing piano earlier. I believe deeply in trying things out for yourself, also i’m quite a bad student. The piano is something that I was always interested in but it was only after my 20’s that I started trying to figure out how to play. I bought a decent but cheap piano of an elderly couple that were moving to a smaller apartment. And i that time i was living in squatted places in Utrecht, which meant a lot of moving around. Between my 20th and 25th birthday i had to move 13 times. And the piano moved with me every time.

There was this one piece that i loved, and my goal was to just learn that piece. Not be distracted by to much theory. And because i couldn’t read sheet music I had to decipher what notes were what keys, and write it on the score. It took me 2 years to learn the piece, and from there on i could basically play. I’m still a noob when it comes down to the theory, or how to place your fingers and wrists. But i sort of figured out my own ways around this.

You have such a unique and instantly recognisable sound; I know a lot of our readers will be eager to know your set up. What kind of equipment do you love to use when in the studio?
There is no simple answer to that. I change my setup quite frequently. Where i’m now fully into Eurorack modules and other hardware, there are moments where i just work from the box. Not even midi controllers, just ableton and my macbook mouse pad. Actually most of my work in the end is just ableton. There is so much you can do with that daw. You have to be a bit creative tho.  

You’ve released on so many great labels that are close to a lot of people’s hearts, which release means the most to you?
I’d have to say the releases I did on my own labels. To release a record yourself is a special proces. I have 100% creative control, but also carry 100% of the risk. The ‘Live Fast, Dwayne Young’ release (BODO001 2015) is still very special to me. That marked the start of new phase, and i I can now look back to a string of 17 releases over 4 years. It makes me really happy.

Traveling far and wide gigging while finding studio time and running two record labels must take an incredible amount of time and focus, how do you do it all?
It’s true that i’m quite busy, but if you do what makes you happy it doesn’t feel stressful. For instance now i’ve been soldering synths for 100 hrs a week, but its just great fun. The most important thing is to stay in touch with your inner motivation. I am in the privileged position that i can do things that I love and believe in. I do loose that feeling a couple of times a year and its then very important to take a step back and restructure my activities.

There have been moments that as an artist I get dragged into a particular scene to much and i feel i start working for that cause in stead of my own values. Those are the moments when it starts taking up a lot of energy and it can get very tiring.

It must be a magnificent and proud feeling being the owner of such an influential label such as Bobby Donny, what are some short term and long term plans you have for the label?
There is a new release shipping out in a couple of weeks. BODO011 is by Broke Brotherhood, 2 producers that prefer to stay anonymous but have both been involved with Bobby Donny releases in the past. I don’t really have a long term plan for the label. Its a creative output for me and some of my friends.
