Every music lover feels a specific, even if sometimes undeserved, sense of achievement when they discover an obscure and underrated artist. So we were particularly stoked when we caught wind of France-based Marc Bianco (soundcloud). The little-known producer is about to again release an EP for French label Moonrise Hill Material – an imprint whose tracks we’ve premiered before – and the record is top quality. The five-tracker is made up of structurally diverse tracks that nevertheless unify under an aesthetic umbrella of sample-heavy, gritty and jazzy sounds.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-marc-bianco-harland-jam” /]

Our premiere is the last and longest track on the record and probably our favourite, too, Harland Jam. Wonderfully fluent keys as well as splashy percussion staple this track, which you could imagine as the soundtrack for a hybrid jazz-house club. Perhaps it’s most impressive for it’s delicate balance of continuity and change: for the background-listener, the track could sound monotonous, but with a bit more attention the song’s dynamism and slow incline is clear. The track subtly picks up at around 2m30s, with energetic drum fills and keyboard jamming on top of the groovy three-chord progression that repeats throughout.

The record, called Serious Mass, will be the label’s ninth release. If you’re into modern and daring house records with an old-school feel, you’ll probably find it worth a purchase. Pre-order your copy here.

Every so often there comes along a collective of producers that are so on top of their game, everything they touch turns to gold. Moonrise Hill Material (soundcloud) is a label that typifies that statement. Folamour, Ethyène, Kaffe Crème & Okwa are a group of friends and producers that formed the imprint in 2015. Since then, every release has been better than the one before, great sample sourcing, funky as fuck beats and some excellent hip-hop joints have become something you can rely on from them.

The latest offering from Moonrise Hill comes in the form of an EP by Saint Paul (soundcloud), a collaborator on the ‘Love Me Some Friends’ VA released earlier this year. This 5 tracker is due out late May / early June and today we have the honour of premiering the A2 track ‘Heart Is A Melody’.
Saint Paul turns on the edit here of a track that evades me, but believe me it’s a sure fire pool party starter. He works his magic on the cuts of original bars and adds a rather sublime bassline lick, coupled with some smooth filter action to make this one stand head and shoulders above the sea of edits we currently seem to be drowning in nowadays. This track will burrow it’s way into your subconscious and, like me, you will find yourself singing it non-stop.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-saint-paul-heart-is-a-melody”/]

Moonrise Hill have a knack of releasing music that is familiar but original, always having that extra little touch of class and this EP is a perfect example of that. The label should be on everyone’s watch list, not only because of the quality of the music but also for the quality of the whole package. The artwork (by a gentleman named Jean Granon) has a certain charm, the aesthetic ties in with the music, familiar yet original.

Due out on 12″ 19th May, pre-order from Juno

FHUO Records or For Heaven Use Only is a new record label founded by Folamour, who is also a co-founder of the widely successful Moonrise Hill Material and a very talented producer in his own right. The forthcoming first release is a various artist EP and is titled “L’Homme ne descend pas du singe mais du bruit” translated to Man didn’t descend from monkeys but from noise. The tagline on the Soundcloud page reads “no informations needed”, which we assume means let the music do the talking.

One of the four tracks on the EP is by fellow MHM co-founder Victor Dijoud aka Kaffe Crème, who released Moonrise Hill Material’s highly sought after second record. “Baciami Subito” is proof again that the Lyon based producer and multi-instrumentalist is able to elegantly merge samples with his own sound to create something unique.

Starting off with a Duke Ellington sample introducing famed trumpet player Cat Anderson, “Baciami Subito” then jumps into an infectious groove with an upbeat jazzy bassline. Miles Davis’ unmistakable voice makes several appearances throughout while a moody trumpet and keys provide some welcoming contrast. All the while, Kaffe Crème seamlessly manages to fuse his own playful percussion elements into the mix making it seem like they belonged there all along.

The release will be out in November, be sure to add this one to your collection as soon as its available!

The Get Fresh Crew Ft. Slick Rick (track : La Di Da Di).
