Charles Murdoch – WTBL [BEATS OF NO NATION]

You know when you’re itching for a certain someone to release new music…you’re not sure when it will arrive but you’re confident it’ll be class. This time around, those records come from Brisbane producer Charles Murdoch. After catching the ears of the Future Classic crew many moons ago, thanks to his ever-graceful productions, he’s been on a steady incline.

After bunkering down for a good half year or so, we now have the ‘WTBL’ EP and we’re wrapped to be premiering its title tune. We’ve been told Murdoch invested in a new toy not too long ago, namely, a modular rack synth. This fresh piece of gear has lead him to explore an after dark avenue, or early morning one, however you look at it.

‘WTBL’ is a twinkling rave. Crunchy percussion and erratic synths engage in a brilliant conversation. An abrasive thing of beauty I’d call it. I once went to an illegal rave in a drainage pipe and I would have loved to have heard this there. The rest of the EP is in a similar vein, bar the opening tune ‘Annoying’ which is like a trip to Saturn’s rings.

This latest body of work, will be out via his fellow countrymen Beats Of No Nation, who’ve previously pressed records for talents such as Leon Revol, Jad & The and Chord Memory Band. Charles once played in a band (Super Fun Bumper Edition) with the legends who now run B.O.N.N. It’s great how things come full circle. Pre-order now on Bandcamp.

Leon Revol – Y [Noire & Blanche]

Délicieuse Records’ House imprint Noire & Blanche are beginning to create quite the name for themselves, after coming out with notable releases from some of our favorite artists like Tell, Folamour, and Loure. To keep their momentum going, the French label has decided to close out the year strong with a compilation that features close friends and musicians they’ve worked with in the past. That sort of list would not necessarily be that impressive for most young labels, but that is definitely not the case here. Their Various Artists Vol. 1 will include tracks from the likes of Roberto S, A Vision of Panorama, Too Smooth Christ, Folamour, Tell, and work from an artist we are featuring in today’s post – Leon Revol!

The Frenchman is becoming a sort of Bolting Bits regular if you will, having covered his releases on labels such as Beats of No Nation, Monologues Records, and Secret Reels. Although Mr. Revol likes to spend most of his time blending a mixture of jazz and house, his contribution to the record titled Y is certainly more of the latter. Marked by vibrant waves of synths that ebb and flow in terms of intensity, Leon is able to create a slow-burner of a deep house tune that will leave you feeling hypnotized with its assortment of faint whispers and mesmerizing percussion. If you are a fan of music from other artists such as Felipe Gordon, this will certainly wet your whistle.

PREMIERE : Leon Revol – If Terry Was In D [Beats Of No Nation]

We can’t remember a producer that has hit the ground running with such an accomplished and well rounded sound as Leon Revol (soundcloud). Since his debut on Monologues alongside Laurence Guy, everything he has made has hit all the right notes, a cosmic and spacey sound that is also as warm as a midsummer night in Bordeaux, the hometown of Monsieur Revol.

Today’s premiere comes from his forthcoming EP entitled Lou Bet Sou on Beats Of No Nation, a label set up by Dom Bird, Jad Lee and Sean Bate. This is their 4th outing, having previously unleashed music by The Chord Memory Band (a project by founder Dom Bird), Jad & The (a moniker used by other founding father Jad Lee) & Super Fun Bumper Edition (a collaboration between Charles Murdoch and Jad Lee).

If Terry Was In D starts with gorgeous Rhodes scales, twirling, always twirling around the stereo field, closely accompanied by a syncopated kick and loose chord progressions. Leon wastes no time getting the percussion section going, all the time various elements meandering in and out of your consciousness. There are so many wonderful little musical phrases in this track, it takes a couple of listens to appreciate what is going on. Complimenting each other like fine cuisine, all the ingredients blend together to create a mouthwatering masterpiece. The whole EP is a complete package of varying guises of house and Leon has executed each one with style. It seems like each record he puts out, there is more and more to like about this guy and we at Bolting Bits cannot wait to hear more from him and of course our friends down under at Beats Of No Nation.

PREMIERE : DJ Aakmael – Dahlin’ (Leon Revol Remix) [Monologues]

Monologues Records is a record label founded by Ben Gomori in January of 2015 and has evolved from what was initially a podcast series. Although the mixes are still coming with relative frequency, so are the records. The first seventeen releases were digital only but like many others before him, Gomori has decided to start releasing on wax and the last seven records from artists such as Nail and Leon Revol have been pressed to vinyl. The eighth 12″ release from Monologues features a four track EP from DJ Aakmael with two of those being remixes, one from Ben Gomori himself and the other coming from none other than the man behind the imprint’s previous release.

Leon Revol (soundcloud) has had several releases come out in fairly quick succession this year with EPs on Secret Reels, Future Disco, and of course Monologues. The young producer is somewhat of an unheralded wunderkind flying under the radar with lovely sample work and moody textures found throughout most of his work thus far. In today’s premiere he takes the already fantastic track Dahlin’ from DJ Aakmael and gives it his own spin. Making do without the vocal chops of the original he takes the main chord samples and works around those. Leon’s version is a lot darker and hazier, less upbeat and yet still very groovy. Detroit-inspired organ stabs adorn this slow burner while a hypnotic bass line walks around the arrangement. This is just further proof that Leon Revol should be on your radar if he isn’t already.

PREMIERE: Leon Revol – Far With A Van (Admin Remix) [Secret Reels]

After a brief wait between releases, UK-based deep house label Secret Reels is back with a new record. The imprint bears a sound that is often both bittersweet and pensive — a shout to the aesthetic of the now defunct Purple Velvet — and has a serious nose, err, ear for talent. Bordeaux producer Leon Revol (soundcloud) is at the helm for SR007, after showing promise with releases on the likes of Pressed for Time and Monologues. It’s a five track EP (four originals and a remix) – aptly named Astral Plane – that delves into flavors of the cosmic variety.

The A1 slot is occupied by “Far With A Van”, which our friends at Sleazy Beats gave us a peek into a short time ago. It’s an airy and smooth jam, layered with synths, perfectly tuned drums and smart samples. The title track, “Astral Plane” accompanies it on the art-side, in all its dusty, spacey glory.

On the flip comes our premiere – Bolting Bits favorite Admin‘s remix of “Far With A Van”. The Bristolian beatsmith managed to find the sample used in the original mix (or something in the exact same key and vein), flipping it into a warm, organic version. Thick and crackly drums hold up the track as melancholy strums and angelic horns adorn the arrangement above a bouncing bassline. Ultimately, the track builds to a nicely executed climax; all samples smartly cued and positioned. It’s a deft re-imagination of the perfectly delicious original take, and repurposes the cut for more sombre, late hours play.

Rounding out the B are “St. James” and “Outside”, two heady synth-led deep house groovers that nicely continue the vibe of the effort. Followers of Secret Reels and their polished deep house sound will not be disappointed by this 12″ in the slightest. Moreover, young Leon has displayed some serious skill here and will surely be a name to watch in the near future.
