Hey guys, been a little while since we’ve heard new music from you, we’re stoked. Can we ask why there was this fairly long gap between releases?

Hey! We try to give ourselves a bit of time between releases to let our sound develop a bit before we share any new music.

We’re also not the kind of producers who can just knock out a track in one session; it takes us weeks of going back and forth, tinkering with different ideas before we start forming something that we’re happy with.

Our processes and the time we spend on each release, helps us to keep things fresh and ensures each release has a distinctive sound.

Plus we both work fulltime, so have to fit Casino Times around a 9 – 5!

How’d you hook up with Clandestino? We love their tastes and your output so was it fairly natural that a release came to fruition?

Thanks! We also love what Clandestino have been putting out.

Joe (Clandestino) messaged us after hearing the Recoded EP on Omena and wanted us to contribute to their podcast series. After this we got chatting over email and ending up sending him some demos. We had a fair amount of exchanges over email of different tracks and variations of tracks before we settled on a consistent ‘sound’ for the release.

We think our music and the label fit really well together, but we weren’t sure if we were aligning straight away with the sound we both had in mind.

We think the guys wanted more tracks like ‘Voices’ or ‘Simulation Bamboo’, but for us that sound belonged on Decoded / Recoded on Omena as it was almost a concept double release. This meant the tracks we were sharing with Clandestino had little to no reference to what have been releasing in recent years.

Joe has a great vision for the label though and working closely with him really helped us mould our ideas into complete release. This is why we think it took some refinement / time to workout how we could craft an EP that would reflect the direction we wanted to take our music and also fit the style of the label.

Can you tell us a little bit about the direction of this EP vs some of your previously released material? Would you say there were any huge changes for you producing the Seven, Eight, Zero EP?

This one has shifted more towards experimentation with different rhythmic patterns and brings some of our electroacoustic influences to the forefront. We originally bonded over working on electroacoustic production projects at University, so it has been refreshing to revisit.

The approach we’ve had on these tracks won’t guarantee them as certified club weapons (don’t pan the club tracks kids), but certainly makes the music a more unique listening experience and fits with us wanting to take a few more risks.

Are you actively cooking up more material or taking it easy and going with the flow, balancing life, etc?

It’s a work / life balance for sure. But that’s not to say we aren’t constantly tweaking away, digging up samples, or making new recordings.

Like any productive producers we’ll always have a library of music hidden away on a hard drive (or in the cloud if you’re up-to-date like we are), that is waiting for the right moment to fit a release and continue development.

If you are passionate about something you make the time for it in your life, so we always find the time to make music.

Do Casino Times have anything else planned for 2019, perhaps another Casino Edits?

We have some more music in the pipeline for this year that we can’t fully detail yet, but keep your ears to the ground! And we’re definitely continuing the Casino Edits series this year with CASINO005 in the works. Creating the disco arrangements in that chopped up style, is something we love doing and we’re excited about getting the next instalment out this year.

We’re also currently playing at a new residency at Five Miles in London. The nights called Outervisions and it is monthly live session blending electronics and instrumentation. Nick XOA is leading a band of session musicians each month and we’re DJing alongside a few names like Wayward, High Praise and Benito & Miguel E. Come down and say Hi to us if you’re in town.

Opening the EP, ‘She is’ gives a taste of the path Pedro takes with this record. A ten-minute twisting trip, that moves and melds modern jazz leanings with a rugged aesthetic. Off kilter sax flurries, at times gleaming, at others melting, open up the distorted dreams of Pedro’s world, as a metronomic double bass attempts to steady the ship. Metallic rides and abrupt percussive hits contrast with the sustained piano chords, further foraging down his surrealist sidewalk. Take to the flip to find the waltzing ‘Faces sob o sol’. A beat-less contemporary jazz piece in 3/4 time, where deft piano melodies dance around a looped up, muted guitar phrase and twanging riffs. A simplicity born from only a handful of layers, that in turn creates a free-flowing fluidity through this jazz rabbit hole. The most club ready of the cuts, ‘Alef’ rolls around next, where a funked out bass and psychedelic strummings, marry with crisp cymbals and polished piano playing. Pedro’s dream inducing trip still takes its hold though, with distorted, panning, hallucinogenic vocal cries swelling across the airwaves. Stepping up to close out the EP, Moomin flips ‘Faces sob o sol’ on its head, laying a rough and ready, liquid DnB rhythm as the basis alongside adding delicate arps and sweeping, atmospheric pads that follow Pedro’s original. As hypnotizing as its forebearer, but with an ethereal dancefloor orientated radiance.

With hundreds of new producers cropping up, week by week, it’s rare to be challenged by something of such high quality from an up-and-coming artist. And with jazz finding a new lease of life across the UK, Pedro’s latest output will be sure to find a home on these shores. Be sure to grab your copy here.

Some record labels we hold in particularly high regard, and Brighton-based WOLF Music Recordings is absolutely one of them. Forty-nine releases deep since its 2009 birth, WOLF’s catalogue is artistically diverse and made up only of high quality musical produce.

Needless to say, we’ve premiered some WOLF music before, so we’re excited to again have premiere rights to some of their music. This time, we’ve got the A3 track, Keep it H 2000, of their 46th EP, Pedro and Jenna Camille’s This Is What I’m Going Through.

The record features five tracks spanning predominantly jazz and house, scattered and sometimes covered with broken beat and more experimental elements.

Keep it H 2000 brings the voice of Washington DC’s Jenna Camille’s to the fore. This track is probably the EP’s quintessential crossover point between jazz and house. Jenna’s light and amicable voice is held up by the intricate percussion, smooth keys and bass and playful synth melodies of her production partner from Porto, Pedro.

The track is almost straight jazz until toward the end when an off-beat hi-hat cuts a whole new groove into the rhythm, lifting the song out of a smokey jazz-club atmosphere and into something lighter and house-driven.

Special mentions are due to the last two tracks on the record: B1 shows off Pedro’s stylish production skills, while the experimental flare of the EP shines through the ultimate track in its short but sweet 80 seconds. Due for release on July 20, you can bank on this being another notable notch in WOLF’s musical belt. While listening the all EP, find below the top 10 tracks that incluenced  Pedro.

Young French musician, LB aka Labat (soundcloud), is about to bolster his already-impressive couple of years of music-making with a release for English house and disco label, WOLF.

The Brighton/London label has a strong following and a discography that will suit an LB aka Labat record. For this cut, called “Trimz & Thangz”, the Lyon-based producer offers four dusty-sounding, sample-riddled house tracks of laudable sophistication for a guy in the nascency of what we hope will be a long and prolific career.

Our premiere is B1 on the record, Leaders For The Government, because there’s little we love more than political-house. The track starts with a vocal sample of a man somewhat grimly lamenting the prospect of a government “for the leaders, by the leaders.” But then a sliding bassline, groovy drum loop and funky guitar flurry suddenly open musical proceedings, to shift the track toward a more hopeful direction. “Bees make their honey, I make music,” the man says.

This is a simple track – the instrumentation isn’t particularly inventive, but it doesn’t need to be. As far as easy-listening goes, you won’t find a more amicable seven-minutes of music under the house/disco umbrella. 

The rest of the EP is very interesting and all the songs combined are worth the cost of any high-quality four-tracker, so look out for their release on March 9.
