The newest release from Dutch imprint Times Are Ruff comes in the form of a 4 track EP from sampling afficionado S3A, a seasoned producer who’s been putting out hot records at a steady pace since 2012. S3A’s latest EP ‘Rexperience’ is an ode to Rex-Club, a legendary Parisian venue known in 92′ for the Wake Up parties hosted by Laurent Garnier, which has become one of the cities most important and established spots for house and techno. Channelling his experiences as a resident at Rex-Club over the past months, S3A has crafted a club-ready EP with nothing but the Rex-Club dance floor in mind.

With a name that stands for ’sampling as an art’, it’s no surprise that S3A has a real knack for digging deep and flipping samples. Our pick off the EP ‘Jun’ is no exception. Kicking off a funky guitar lick and juggling cowbells, ‘Jun’ starts of as smooth as they come. But as new samples are layered every other bar, the sound gets fuller by the second, and by the time the kick’s hit the floor and you can hear the dancers cheering, it’s obvious what an unstoppable groover ‘Jun’ really is. A harmony of funk & house with a magic French touch, ‘Jun’ is a one hell of a feel-good club tune.

Once again, S3A shows us what sampling is all about, taking snippets of history to create a collage of a modern club experience. And although they were created with just one in mind, there’s no doubt that S3A’s latest tunes will work a treat on any dance floor. Not one to miss!

PREMIERE : Malouane – Keep Yo Mama Clean [In The Box Records]

Parisian sample-based house label In The Box Records, kicks off 2018 with a project from fellow Parisian, and co-founder of In Any Case Records, Malouane (soundcloud). With previous releases on Lagaffe Tales and his own label, Malouane continues a hot streak with another project full of intelligent sampling and chilled-out deep house grooves. His unique take on creating atmospheres has resulted in comparisons to MCDE and Rick Wade, and if he continues with this charming, jazzy, soulful house he’ll certainly rise in the ranks of producers to watch.

The EP’s second track, “Keep Yo Mama Clean,” is a clear stand-out. Starting with what sounds like sped-up reggae percussion, the vibe is immediately raw, vintage, and almost live in a sense. The heavy use of vinyl noise drives that feeling home, and sonically we’re transported to a laid-back street-side cafe where strangers sip coffee and read philosophy. Where a young poet tests her poetry to a small crowd and finds grace in her missteps. The track feels like that first morning buzz, that hop in your step, or that feeling like the day is conquerable no matter what it brings. Calm, confident, shimmering. Relaxed yet serious. We’ll take more of this, please.

As a whole, Malouane’s EP is a well-balanced affair that while strikingly simple, is wholly captivating. With solid remixes from Times Are Ruff and dusty-house favourite Cody Currie, you’re sure to find something of value inside this package. Needless to say, keep an eye on In The Box, they’ve been consistent with their releases and we expect them to continue delivering the heat. As for Malouane, we’ve been sold, and we’re always looking forward to more from him. In other words, get in while the gettin’ is HOT.

PREMIERE: K98 – PBJT [Times Are Ruff]

To celebrate their fifth anniversary, Den Haag label Times Are Ruff are coming with a special fourth entry into their No Dough, Just Cookies compilation series. While previous releases in the No Dough line have been limited to one disc, TAR has doubled up on this one–placing the likes of Fouk, S3A, Liem & Eddie Ness and in-house DJ team Times Are Ruff themselves. It’s a cool collection of tunes displaying the mixture of both the deep house and disco-leaning aesthetics the Dutch label has harbored over the course of their run.

Your Bolting Bits premiere comes from the first slot of this seven track release. At the helm is the unknown K98, who comes correct with gospel-tinged disco house jam. Filtered samples build tension over a drum machine, using looped vocals and organ stabs to raise the energy. The rises and falls are cleverly designed, resulting in a jammy and climactic final third which unleashes more of the vocal sample as well as a chopped up solo. This one should certainly find success on the dancefloor and in DJ’s crates, given the monstrous reception of gospel-sampling house tracks like thatmanmonkz’ “For Bae” or Karizma’s ever-rinsed “Work It Out”.

The compilation itself has something for everyone–ranging from the gospel/disco house stylings of our premiere to more moody deep house and even some acid-tinged material. Anyways, the 2x 12″ should be out soon, and can be preordered on Decks

PREMIERE : Junktion – Baby I Need (Times Are Ruff Remix) [Times Are Ruff]

At first glance, Times Are Ruff, (soundcloud & facebook), may look like an outlet for the production outfit of the same name to get their music out there, but there are a handful of releases by other high calibre artists such as Larry DeKat and Awanto 3. The label has a knack of putting out limited cuts of sample heavy house music that is both in high demand and of high quality. Last years ‘Double D’s’ from the Just Checking The Walls EP is a sublime cut and a perfect example of the type of house music we have come to expect from them.

What we have here is the 2nd EP on Times Are Ruff by the man they call Junktion (soundcloud & facebook). As one half of the production duo Fouk alongside Daniel Leseman, he has released on labels like Heist, Razor-N-Tape and under his own name, Sleazy Beats, Rose and Slow Town. As a fan, I look out for everything Junktion, Fouk and Outplay related so when this release was announced, I was like a kid at Christmas.

Todays Premiere is the Times Are Ruff remix of the track Baby I Need. Remixes are such a hard thing to approach, especially when faced with an original by an artist with such a defined sound like Junktion. The beats on this remind me of one of my favourite Phife Dawg lyrics ‘I like my beats hard like 2 day old shit’. A pounding 909 kick drum and snare + clap combo ensure maximum dance floor presence. The track is centred around the funkiest guitar lick, spinning from ear to ear. Layers of lush rhodes chords build with the percussion to create what is a simmering, funk-laden piece of house music. A short respite from the beats sees long and flowing pads behind a filtered drum loop, all the time with that infectious guitar burrowing into your sub-conscious. Times Are Ruff have done a superb job of flipping the original into a brooding funk stomper. The 12” will be out mid April, grab at Juno & Decks.

Daniël Leseman est un producteur et sound designer issu de hollande. Il a évolué sur la scène électronique depuis les années 90. Après un rapide passage par la trance progressive il trouve sa voix : la house. Il débuta sa carrière sous le pseudonyme: 3 Colours. Récemment Daniël Leseman a opté pour conserver son propre nom sur scène. Nourrit par la house de Chicago et le soul de Détroit, il créer ses propres productions oscillant entre la house et une fine deep house.

Parallèlement, il se produit avec Hans Peeman sous le pseudo de Fouk avec qui il a crée le label Outplay. Après sont dernier EP “Time to go” très remarqué l’année précédente Daniel Leseman est revenu avec « Tease me » que vous pouvez retrouvé dans notre dernière MIXED BY / …
