M5K. A shorthand German Submachine gun with a 20 round clip. Sounds severe, sounds like something used in the Westcoast of Los Angeles for some serious gang bangin in the early 90s.

Thankfully, this M5K is not a deadly piece of machinery, but the name of the talented Melbourne producer who is setting off but with his music, which is indeed heavily inspired by the dope Westcoast gangster beats of Schooly D, Easy E, Big L and all the other real hip hop artists we have grown up listening to. M5K has crafted an undoubtedly solid brand, think 80s VHS, white deloreans, gold chains, beach babes and fur bucket hats in the summer. He has done so with the help of imprints such as Voyage Recordings (you remember the amazing ‘Ford Capri’ video), Les Yeux Orange, Melbourne Deepcast and Dopeness Galore. His latest EP comes off LA label, Hobo Camp, a follow up to ‘Absolutely Real’ released in 2016, what a fabulous reunion!

One to fill floors and have heads rocking all night. The premier track, ‘All About U’ is neatly arranged, with that signature electrofunk feel bouncing along low slung lines and spacey keys that hop along. M5K’s high quality production is impressive throughout the new EP ‘Time 2 Jam’. Staying true to his Juno 106, using only the classic Rolands gear and legit 80s equipment, M5K is able to create gritty hip-hop infused house music, to bring us fire tracks like ‘All about U’. The title itself makes me think of the late great legend Tupac, which is fitting with the producers first true musical love of rap. I get the feeling this EP was made for us to vibe to whilst transporting us through space and time to bring us safely into a blended late 80’s early 90s era, with our shades on, joint in one hand, getting down on a rooftop somewhere in LA. Even under the grey UK skies, I’m sonically carried off into the sunshine, beach parties and lowkey city dancefloors of Los Angeles!

Heard of Lux Experience yet? No? Well, that’s unfortunate. Because he’s actually an upcoming Norse God boogying down from Valhalla to bring you the unadulterated disco-funk you’ll need to groovify your pathetic excuse for a life. Don’t believe us? Let Lux tell you himself.

In answering the question, “Who the f..k is Lux Experience?” The Norwegian producer responds, “[I am] a old school breaker, a hip hop dedicator, a house party maker, killing those beats embracer. It doesn’t hurt that [I am] one of the pioneers of the us house sound in Scandinavia, got heavy weight dj experience. [I am] about to write a new chapter in the Norwegian club music history!”

If that’s not already enough bravado for you to pledge your allegiance to Lux, take a listen at his sophomore release by the lovely people over at wewillalwaysbealovesong. You’ve probably heard of these funky lads before. They’re the French tour de force behind Ponty Mython’s fuego EP “Tropic Of Capricorn,” which was recently remixed by the likes of Black Loops, Nebraska, BAL5000, and Jay Haze (yes, please).

In “Make U All Jam,” Lux’s bio comes in real handy to understand the influences that make up the focal points of this record. It certainly seems to be from the era of where popping and locking was a new craze taking the Bronx by storm in the 1970s. If we had to describe the entire EP, we’d say that it sounds like an homage to the birth of hip-hop – an anthology of beats that converged to jumpstart one of the most influential movements of our time. From disco, to funk and R&B, to the new sounds being created by technological achievements like drum machines, sequencers and synthesizers – Lux’s release has it all.

Take his track “Stylish” for example. As soon as you hit play, one will immediately begin forming connections to the likes of artists such as Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Afrika Bambaataa. Seriously, you hear those knee-slapping, guitar licks?! They’re enough to make Nile Rodgers blush. And don’t even get me started on them vocoder-laden melodies and grooves! If you and are like us, and are still reeling from “The Get Down” being canceled, cop “Stylish” along with Lux’s other three tracks to be taken back to a better, without-a-doubt funkier time.

Melbourne beatsmith M5K has been turnings heads for a minute with his phat, boogie infused-stylings, which have released on the likes of Melbourne Deepcast, Pusic Records, and, perhaps most notably, via full EPs with Dopeness Galore and Voyage Recordings. The producer’s style could be described as a tasty amalgam of 80’s electroboogie flavor with boom-bap and house aesthetics. It’s been over a year since his last drop (the funky Healin’ Feelin‘ EP on Dopeness), and we’re so glad to him back. The vehicle for his return is a white DeLorean by the name of Absolutely Real, available now on LA-based modern funk and boogie imprint Hobo Camp.

The City of Angels crew already did the world a solid by debuting the title track “Absolutely Real” about a month back. It’s a lower-tempo boogie / bap track that fuses a funky Moog bassline and neck-snapping drums with some ultra-smooth synth work and perfectly orchestrated vocal cuts. It’s our privilege here at Bolting Bits then to uncover the second track for your enjoyment.

“Can Never Get Enuff” boosts the tempo slightly into more mid-tempo boogie-house range, with vibes reminiscent of M5K’s own Marcy Ave EP from Voyage, as well as that of New York-based modern funk and boogie imprints Arcane and Superior Elevation. Again, the Moog hooks up the low end, while an array of synths dance and hypnotize you in the higher frequencies and eventually produce a euphoric climax. It’s a mean jam that could set the dance afire, or. conversely, easily soundtrack a speedy late night highway cruise.

Rounding out the A-side is “Charlotte (Lost Demo)”, which drops the speed down and laces a spacey 808 beat with some silky synth work for a nice slow jam. On the B-side, “Ice Cold Party Jam” and “Let’s Try It Out” up the ante back into boogie house territory and continue the display of M5K’s skillful synthesizer work. All in all, the EP is an example of what we’ve come to expect from the Melbourne man: savory combination of West Coast electrofunk and boogie stylo with house and hip-hop structure.

Modern funk selectors and fans of fat beats in general should not sleep on this release. Keep things Absolutely Real and order the EP on Hobo Camp’s Bandcamp.
