Nerang Recordings celebrates its fifth trip around the sun with the second ‘Freaky Friends’ compilation. The six-track compilation features a well-rounded cast of producers, some of whom are marking their return to the label, along with Cologne’s Turk Turkelton, who makes their first appearance on the imprint. Nerang Recordings head honcho DJ Whipr Snipr pulls out all the stops with this excellently curated compilation.

Since its inception in 2016, the Berlin-via-Australia imprint has featured releases by the likes of Interplanetary Criminal, DJ Swagger, Subjoi, Cassettes for Kids and Low Tape, amongst others.

Kicking off the release is DJ Swagger’s ‘Hoticewater’ with its shimmering, ethereal breakbeat feel. Russian electro wizard Low Tape marks his return to the label with ‘So Delicious’, a mood-inducing electro bomb that the producer is known for creating. Rounding off the A-side is Nørus, alongside label head DJ Whipr Snipr, with ‘Molecular Collision’, an acid-tinged electro jam that picks up the tempo.

The B-side maintains the pace from the get-go with Ole Mic Odd’s ‘In The House’, a track that harnesses 80’s futurism with its use of robotic vocal lines and electrifying arps. Next up is ‘Stop Talking Boy’ by Nasty King Kurl, a track that makes great use of hard hitting drums and commanding percussion. Cologne’s Turk Turkelton finishes off the compilation with the track ‘Offenbachs Father’, another electro-leaning track with a razor-sharp drum workout.

Guys from Moscow crews Ghetto Kingdom and Sk8techno – Ellipse and BRTS, who released great 12’’ last year on Sakskøbing. One of the new names for us, who has a release on Truth Radio and who is playing great music on TESTFM – J.Cause from St.Petersburg and Crimea based artist with empresed collection of rare-vinyl releases – Futurereality.

Today’s premiere is coming from ‘Low Tape‘ the Russian producer who is already known for a bright sound landscape, and a little spark of lo-fi experimental flavor. He presents us today with a colourful 5 track acid and electro banger. The previous releases on ‘of paradise’ ‘Mechatronica ‘ and ‘Neo Violence’ made him become a well-known producer and now he’s debuting on the British label ‘X-Kalay‘ as well. The variety of sounds on the new release, ‘Road Valley’ EP, again displays the diversity and convertible style of ‘Low Tape’s’ production. The EP is full of club weight tracks, and gentle melodic sensitivity.

Title track ‘Road Valley’ opens up the EP, with broad melodic synth lines, underpinned by breezy percussion on deep pads and warm rumbling bass. An almost spherical intro of ‘Red Lights In Ma Eyez’ is floating on groovy chords, celestial pads and surprises with a consistent acid line.

The flip opens with a much more hammering acid line, straight up, on ‘Acid Television’, supported by deep bass and sharp percussion, opening the B-side with a real electro banger. Moving on with a euphoric atmosphere on an almost classic 303 ‘Low Tape’-sound with ‘Technovia’, are driving acid lines, urgent drums and tense pads unite to form a smooth club cut.

Finally, we arrive at our Bolting Bits premiere, the delightful closing of the flipside with ‘Why Is Life So Strange’. Perfectly matching synths with easy percussion and soaring melodies help us drift into melancholy and introspection.

London based Axe On Wax Records (check out our interview with label-head Fede Lng) is back with another stellar release on the sublabel, Axe Traxx, which kicked off last year with a banging EP by Australian duo SONDERR, featuring a remix from Mall Grab. The limited-run, hand-stamped white label has put out several releases already, highlighting producers such as Trudge and RVL. Axe Traxx explores the lo-fi side of the Axe On Wax deep house sound (exemplified by the recent DJ Aakmael 12”, « Tales From The Deep Side »), with grainy percussion and darker melodic lines. The fifth release welcomes Tape Hiss (SoundCloud) to the Axe Traxx family with « L.A Tapes Ep. »The Brooklyn-by-way-of-San-Francisco producer has two stellar records out on Love Notes From Brooklyn (with a 2×12” slated for release in the coming weeks), which combine punchy bass lines with airy pads and synth melodies to create ethereal dance tracks. « L.A Tapes Ep » continues in this vein while embracing the grittier Axe Traxx sound with three emotive house burners, and a remix from Russian producer, Low Tape (SoundCloud).

‘Mercury’ opens the EP with an arpeggiated synth line that builds in complexity above a thumping kick and twangy bass. A2, ‘Music And The Spirit,’ begins with a beautiful ambient introduction that is gradually juxtaposed with dense, rhythmic percussion (especially those crunchy claps) and an acid bass line. The B-side features two versions of ‘Just Kids:’ the original, and a remix by Low Tape, which is our premiere today.

‘Just Kids’ is arguably Tape Hiss’ heaviest track on the record; the opening 2 minutes veer towards a darker, almost techno sound, which slowly blossoms into a driving house track with the addition of melodic synths. Low Tape ups the tempo on his remix, and adds percussion below the reverbed pads. The bass line takes centre stage, accompanied by fluttering, delayed claps and snare hits. Both tracks leave the listener with the echoing whisper, “I love you.”
