Vienna is the city in which label co-founders Stanley Schmidt and DJ Boring met for the first time. This romantic incident caused a cosmic connection, and led to the two producers teaming up and releasing a musical blast on today’s scene. Today they present us with the second release spawned from their cooperation: “Smart Replies”. The release is an impactful record of well-saturated electro, loose club-friendly sketches, and enlivened ambient soundscapes.

Stanley Schmidt is a very vivid full time musician based in Leipzig who is running two labels, “PH17” and “Rivulet Records” and he’s also a popular DJ in the underground scene of Leipzig and Berlin. As a resident DJ at ‘Buttons’ and regular performances at ‘FIER’-parties, his progressive style is ever evolving via exploration through house, techno and electro, which gives him his bold contemporary style. Functioning like collages rather than self-contained songs, Stanley takes various recordings and samples out of their usual context (a well-known drum-break, an odd gabber-Skream-sample, or a computer-voice generated by Google’s AI) to form something entirely new.

The original of “Shifting Modernism” opens the A-Side with intense bass and is our Bolting Bits premiere today. A breakneck rhythm with loose euphoric vocals that are interrupted by a celestial synth cumulate into a nice frenetic tune. This opening just increases our appetite for more! The joint with DJ Boring, the remix of “Shifting Modernism”, gives the EP an even more diversified sound. The Berlin-based producer manages to fit in his signature style even when working on something that’s not his typical sound.  The whole record is full of little surprises and harmonic experiments of different elements. For us, it’s a welcome occasion to listen to new inspiring soundscapes.

After the stomper that was the ‘Guardian of Forever’ EP, Detroit legend Rick Wade returns to bastion of lofi house ‘Shall Not Fade’ with another four sweet and soulful deep house cuts on his new ‘Passion Play’ Ep.

B1’s Inner Most, brings the darkness of 6am club workouts straight to your ears. Trippy 909s and swelling string pads evolve into beautiful rhodes chords layered over a smooth baseline. Wade comes in with a lovely bit of piano and string work that lifts the track into the realms of the deepest ecstasy. The track is dripping with moody atmosphere and that signature Detroit sound.

B2’s Zero Ningen is the EP biggest departure, bringing disco congas and a chopped Japanese vocal to create a psychedelic house number, with a gentle lo-fi piano melody holding the track down. If J Dilla made house instead of Hip Hop, lived in Japan, and enjoyed the recreational use of assorted hallucinogens, maybe he’d make something that sounds a little like this.

Another great EP from the masterful Rick Wade, proving once again why Shall Not Fade is one of the strongest labels in circulation. The Passion Play EP is out digitally and on Wax July 6th.

In a lo-fi world stacked with ‘memey’ DJ names aplenty, the ‘DJ Windows XP’ alias makes for a real contender in being the best of the bunch. The Amsterdam duo burst into the scene only a couple months back, starting off strong with their split with DJ Relationship Goals (another good one) on DJ Haus’ E-Beamz label, which is, of course, home to the DJ Boring genre classic ‘Winona’. Now DJ Windows XP are back with their second EP entitled ‘Sometimes I Feel Sad, Sometimes Happy’, forthcoming on young Netherlands label Who’s Susan.Our premiere today is the EP’s title track, sitting at A3 of the 5-track SUSAN003. ‘Sometimes I Feel Sad, Sometimes Happy’ opens with thick kicks and a brooding acid-techno bass, but the shadowy mood becomes abruptly lifted by a comedic interjection of the unmistakable Windows XP start-up sample, which later goes to build the melodic palate of the 6-minute tune. As the percussion takes a break a calm sentimentalism pervades, via mellow airy chordal synths that echo with celestial rings. In come the familiar raw percussive highs, but before we get too comfortable the duo adds in a chant-like vocal line which recolours the bass kicks as feet stamping to a mysterious ritualistic dance.

Just as the title suggests, the rest of the EP contains fiery groovers exploring moods from euphoria to melancholy, all expanding on the duo’s self-declared brand of ‘emotional’ house. Despite their light-hearted name and work in a genre traditionally marked by fun tracks with catchy vocals, DJ Windows XP make certain their tunes carry a whole heap of weight.
