Spring ‘23 sees Faux Poly release the first in a series of remix compilations, 8 tracks from a different artists across multiple genres.‘Faux Poly: Remixed 001’ marks the start of the label’s new regularly quarterly remix series, where a wide variety of producers are invited to pick anything from the label catalogue and reimagine it, making the core sounds of the label transcend their original setting and permeate through different club scenes around the world.



Highlights for FPR001 include Skudge’s unmistakable sound with Kassian’s flagship track ‘Off World Vehicles’, which has already garnered ongoing support from the likes of Ben UFO and Dixon, New Zealander newcomer Emanuel’s incredibly rowdy flip of Jay Carder’s A1 single ‘Eva’s Stoned’, and a club focussed change of tone from Demi Riquisimo, taking a left turn from his regular house influenced style with a choppy breakbeat remix of Jay Carder’s ‘So Carelessly’.

Faux Poly launched in early 2022 as means for label bosses Kassian to focus on a more specific heavier club sound. One year on, the label has put out 5 EP’s (Kassian, Jay Carder, Ste Roberts) and now boasts a monthly release schedule for the whole of 2023, with forthcoming EP’s from Sister Zo, Adam Curtain, and Guava to name a few.

Having recently opened her account on Ubiquity Records with the brilliant, Bali-inspired single ‘Kete’, Rose Robinson returns as Tigerbalm with another snapshot of her forthcoming debut album, International Love Affair. As with its predecessor, ‘Waiheke’ gleefully blurs the boundaries between contemporary club music and the rising star’s love of rhythms and musical cultures from around the world.

All of the tracks on International Love Affair were specifically inspired by places Robinson has visited pre and post-pandemic. ‘Waiheke’ is no exception, with Robinson starting work on the track following an inspirational trip to the Flamingo Pier festival on Waiheke Island, New Zealand.

Once again, the track is rooted in the London-based producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist’s deep love of delay-laden 21st century disco, organic house and deep electronic club cuts. Pairing these influences with African-influenced percussion and sampled chants, Robinson delivers a sparkling fusion of Afro-cosmic and dubbed-out nu-disco rich in sparkling synth sounds and warm, weighty bass.

Appropriately, Robinson’s original Tigerbalm take on ‘Waiheke’ is backed with a wealth of inspired remixes tailored to tantalise and tease a variety of dancefloors. The headline-grabbing remix comes from fellow ‘world dance’ fusionists Alma Negra, whose organic sounding, loose-limbed rework adds dubbed-out synth, guitar and vocal snippets to rolling Afro-disco beats and a faithful rendition of Robinson’s brilliant bassline.

Semi-Delicious founder Demi Riquisimo, a rising star of the London deep and tech-house scenes, delivers a wonderfully spacey, tactile revision in his distinctive style, wrapping echoing sci-fi synths, intergalactic chords and chanted vocal snippets over a subtly acid-flecked house groove, while Quartz opts for a stripped-back, new wave-goes-dub-disco flex on a revision that sounds like a long-lost B-side from a sought-after early ‘80s post-punk single.

The inimitable, Detroit-born, UK based producer and DJ, Demi Riquísimo returns to his unbounded Semi Delicious imprint with a 4-track EP with feature vocals from one of London’s most in-demand DJs – Lulah Francs.

Delivering another delectable spread of speaker rumbling house music in a variety of dancefloor flavours, Demi sets off with title track ‘Rush Common’. A steady rolling kick, with his signature live-feel hi-hats are joined by a rumbling 909 groove and massive synth chords and a wandering acid-lead. Simple, effective, fearless house music.

‘Paroche’ brings the authentic Italo-influenced flavours that Demi has become renowned for. Sampled female vocal chants dissect a metric, live drum groove with lush pads and an oozing, wandering arp synth running through the centre. – Demi also includes a huuuuge, Extended Balearic Mix for the bubbling Ibiza terraces throughout the summer.

‘Circulate’ showcases fellow Londoner Lulah Francs vocal leads, across a gnarly FM synth lead and sassy Roland drum groove. Lulah’s enchanting vocals give this one an extra edge to captivate any dancefloor it meets.

‘Don’t Feed The Tiger’ combines Indo-influences with modal vocals and an eastern instrumentation to bask in under the midday sun. A slower tempo from a live-drum groove offers space to move between shaded trees, barefoot in the Balearic sands.

Next up for London via Detroit artist Demi Riquísmo is an exciting six-track remix EP on his Semi Delicious record label. Demi, who has been receiving praise by many in the underground dance music scene, lined up a head-turning collection of reworks from Kassian, T.Jacques, Baby Rollen, Black Loops, Manual Darquart and Jive Talk. This isn’t your average remix EP, as each artist completely reinvents his work in their own unique way.

The EP opens straight away with a dancefloor destroying remix of ’54 Reasons’ by Kassian. A steady, up-tempo and commanding drum pattern set the stage from the get go, with a warm bassline being introduced around the minute mark. The vocal recalls dancefloor days with its intuitive charm, worthy of a chant in the club. Perfectly crafted synth-work guides the listener throughout the track but makes it to the spotlight when the kick and bass cease, just before guiding the listener back to the familiarity of the drum groove. All in all, the track has that classic Kassian take on house that we have grown fond of over the years.

Up-and-coming British label Semi Delicious, headed by London-based DJ Demi Riquísimo, returns with their sixth various artists compilation, SEMID006 “Better Days” EP. Across these four tracks, Demi and co. prove their knack for luscious 90’s-Acid-House-leaning club anthems.

Coming in hot on the opening to the B-side, London’s Baby Rollén delivers the subtly propulsive, dreamy, and sensuous, “Deep Asleep”. As the title suggests, the song retains an almost eternally nocturnal vibe, the perfect soundtrack for a sleepless club night. The track starts with a steady lurch, as rolling 808 drums and diced up breaks are infused with a repeating, seductive vocal sample, which in turn segues into a robust bass line and elastic, quivering acid line. Buoyed by soft, glowing synths, the track nonchalantly picks up in momentum several times in its span, maintaining a seemingly perpetual apex of Acid House glory. 

The logic of the song could be equated to a dream that emerges in and out of one’s consciousness, each time reemerging in a completely renewed light. The dream in question here, of course, is that sticky acid line, one that’ll be hard to get out of your head even on just one listen. Despite the repetitiveness, there is something meditative and transportive here.

Brooklyn’s HOMAGE returns with its eight release this May, the vinyl-only Stride EP from Demi Riquísimo made up of three Disco infused House cuts.The UK’s producer has been gaining traction over the past few years via a run of releases on his own Semi Delicious imprint as well as remixes for the likes of Chromeo, Elder Island, and HiFi Sean. Here though we see him deliver his first original EP outside of his own label, joining the roster of New York’s HOMAGE, an imprint known for nurturing and exposing rising talent from across the globe even in its relatively early stages itself.

‘Makossa’ leads the release with a sun-drenched House feel, fusing a bumpy bass line, resonant synth licks, and swirling vocal chants alongside an organic drum groove before the latter stages ease in a bubbling arpeggio line and emotive string sequences. ‘Stride’ follows next, laying focus on a subtly modulating arp line, guitar noodles, and chopped string samples whilst a swinging rhythm and snaking synth add further fuel to the groove.

The EP’s closing tune and vinyl only exclusive, ‘Love Russia,’ harkens back to true eighties Disco aesthetics via an amalgamation of funk leaning guitar licks, intricate string melodies, and enchanting synth work. Dynamic drum and effect programming is the last touch needed for a contemporary twist on a classic style.
