Fruit Merchant, the newborn label child of Hidden Spheres is turning three. Releases, that is. Launched earlier this year, Tom Harris has already managed to put three different offerings together for the masses. We had the pleasure of premiering the B1 on the first EP from the label founder himself entitled “Wonders of the Rainforest”. The follow up was a re-issue of the classic Earth Boys (Roy Davis Jr & Jay Juniel) release “Destination Heaven”, initially out on the then defunct, but now newly revitalized Undaground Therapy Muzik.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-native-cruise-calypso-spring” /]
Fruit Merchant’s third offering comes from fresh-faced producer Native Cruise who’s got one track released to date on YAM Records. We’ve got the pleasure of premiering the B1 and title track, “Calypso Spring”. The dreamy chord sequence starts off the production with just a slight hint of darkness. A simple yet groovy percussion groove introduces the rhythm and then the fat sounding bass comes in, following the downward trajectory of the chords. This ditty is a slowly developing jam that really hits its stride a little past the midway point, where all of the elements start to come together. An arpeggiated mallet melody, cosmic pads and the suspenseful background theme work with the other elements to create one of the more interesting pieces on the EP. We can see this one perfectly closing out some dancefloors in the wee hours. Make sure you keep an ear on Native Cruise. Do you consider yourself a house head? If so, you know that not a day goes by where you don’t hope for new tunes from Dream 2 Science. New to this world? If so, Dream 2 Science is NYC based legend Cozmo D. Real name Ben Cenac, Cozmo is highly regarded for his role in pioneering electro group Newcleus, and he later enjoyed international success with his jazzy, garage-inclined Sha-lor project. His work as Dream 2 Science was little known outside of a hardcore circle of deep house enthusiasts until Rush Hour reissued his classic self-titled LP. Since then, Ben has been responsible for a few critically acclaimed remixes, but we’ve yet to see a new EP of tunes under the Dream 2 Science alias.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/black-zodiac-dream-2-science-remix” /]
Now that the history lesson is over, let’s get to the nitty gritty. Dropping via Carry On Records on June 8th is an EP titled “True Places” by little known producer, Black Zodiac. Not much information is available about he/she/them online, but we’re glad the two tracker landed in our inbox. Both tracks prove to be excellent little slices of golden-era deep house, fitting for the warm up or come down. The a-side is a bit more shimmery, while the Dream 2 Science remix on the b-side is expectedly deep, and sexy as hell. Cozmo puts heavy focus on the main synth melody, letting it ring out over deep pads and subdued percussive elements, before stripping it away in favor of extended solos. There’s a gorgeous warmth to this track that’s completely arresting. Put simply, a track that helps to clear your mind. It certainly won’t be clearing any dancefloors.

Keep your eye out for the drop on June 8. Pre-order the project here.

Thomas Gandey and Danny McLewin, known from the popular disco-influenced electronic music collective Psychemagik, have once again teamed up as Ghost Vision for the Skakuhachi EP on Paramida’s label, Love on the Rocks. The name shakuhachi means “1.8 shaku,” referring to its size. It is a compound of two words:1. shaku is an archaic unit of length equal to 30.3 centimeters (0.994 English foot) and subdivided in ten subunits.
2. hachi means “eight”, here eight sun, or tenths of a shaku. Thus, “shaku-hachi” means “one shaku eight sun” (54.54 centimeters), the standard length of a shakuhachi (a bamboo flute). The bamboo flute first came to Japan from China during the 6th century. During the medieval period, shakuhachi were most notable for their role in the Fuke sect of Zen Buddhist monks, known as komus (“priests of nothingness,” or “emptiness monks”), who used the shakuhachi as a spiritual tool. Their songs (called “honkyoku”) were paced according to the players’ breathing and were considered meditation as much as music.[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/ghost-vision-shakuhachi-al-kassian-remix” /]And that brings us back to the music! The shakuhachi is all over this EP, and the combination of cosmic disco and eastern influences is incredibly appealing. Quite without thinking of the Eastern origins of the instrument which had given the recording certain sonic distinguishments, and of course, its title, Paramida also enlisted the help of two musicians named Alex — one from Tokyo, and one from Kyoto.

Alex from Kyoto, aka Al Kassian (soundcloud), once again delivers an absolutely killer remix ripe with heavy 80s influenced drums and intergalactic acid-tinged synth lines. Playing on the meditative history of the shakuhachi, his remix incorporates deep atmospheres, organic fx, and soothing vocal chops that subdue the driving percussion and truly make the song an expansive journey through sound. It was reported that upon first listening at Love On The Rocks headquarters, wild dancing broke out almost immediately and did not stop for 36 hours. We can see ourselves dancing forever to this too. Pre-order at Juno.

Yügen Records is a Madison, Wisconsin-based imprint releasing their second record. The sparsely populated midwestern state is not one you normally associate with forward thinking electronic music and that’s something we at Bolting Bits like; record labels, artists or individuals who push boundaries and yet come from some of the most unexpected places. For their sophomore release they’ve penned a reissue, originally out in 2014 on 40% Foda, from Brazilian producer, live act and DJ, Zopelar (soundcloud). A resident at São Paulo’s ODD, Pedro Zopelar is someone who knows how to work a crowd. That, combined with his ability to churn out bold musical compositions from his synth and drum machine collections, earned him a spot in the 2014 Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo and then live gigs in renowned spaces such as Panorama Bar and DGTL Festival.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-zopelar-transbordo-tropical” /]

The re-released EP entitled Transbordo Tropical, from which we are premiering the A1 and title track, could be divided into two. The A1 and B1, Transbordo Tropical and Estrela Distante can be grouped into one category with slower, funkier, 80’s cosmic synth vibes. The A2 and B2, Obsoleutron and O Divertido Céu de Estamira however, are slightly more dynamic and four to the floor, with a different feeling that even edges into acid territory. For us, Transbordo Tropical is the standout here, and as the name suggests, it conveys a warm and sultry atmosphere transporting you straight to the tropics.

We look forward to seeing if Yügen Records continue to keep their ear to the ground and pull out some more innovative releases out of their hat.

Manuel Darquart (soundcloud) is the alias shared by Sean Whittaker and Louis Anderson-Rich, two Auklanders and long-time friends bringing their love of 80’s post-disco into the present with a serious touch of class. Having recently released on Seb Wildwood & Hollick’s Coastal Haze, Manuel Darquart have been melding the cosmic ends of house and boogie with an effortless strut since 2012. The duo now prepare to kick off their third release with East London based Childsplay, a perfect home for their laid back and redolent Birds of Paradiso EP.

Sharing similar balmy territory with Harvey Sutherland and the Poolside boys, the track list plays out like a half-remembered summer’s day out with friends and family. With Bolting Bits’ premiere, Gutterball, melodic flourishes noodle and wash throughout the mix as crunchy hats swing and toms stagger about. Warmly filtered pads fill out the mix and the track allows itself to crystallize and settle into a breezy and buoyant roller. It makes for an effective reminder that even though the weather is beginning to turn, the good times needn’t stop when the heat and sunshine are dripping from your speakers.
