With a proper bunch of releases on labels such as Toy Tonics, Public Possession, Rose Records, Let’s Play House and Needwant, the name of house duo Rhode & Brown surely pops up into one’s head when the conversation rotates not only about Munich’s house scene, but also probably about the whole house scene in Germany. Guys have cemented their names into the game by not only producing proper house beats and melodies, but also by playing extensively in Germany and abroad. Friedrich and Stephan also run their own label Slam City Jams and it’s 5th release is about ready to see the light of day and tickle the earbuds of house music aficionados worldwide.The new release is a remix package for their vinyl EP “Wave 100” which came out last September on their own imprint. Bavarians gathered a solid gang of their beloved producers from around the globe and this has resulted in a rock solid four tracker. This package includes remixes from Regelbau’s C. K., Klasse Wrecks head honcho Mr. Ho and also from one of Permanent Vacation’s true all stars – Bostro Pesopeo.

PREMIERE : Rhode & Brown – Iruzu Jam [Toy Tonics]

Munich-based duo Rhode & Brown (soundcloud) aka Friedrich Trede & Stephan Michael Braun are back on fellow German label Toy Tonics for another EP. “B tru 2 u” marks the producers’ fifth release over the past four years for the ever-popular imprint. It is testament to the label’s belief in their artists that they can have consistent releases from a regular roster of producers who call the label home, such as Coeo, Black Loops, and of course Rhode & Brown. Just as the imprint’s sound has evolved over the years, so has that of the pair of producers, who began their journey with Toy Tonics on release number 008 and are continuing it today, sixty three releases later with number 071. From more jackin’, upbeat tracks to moodier, deep cuts to balearic sounds, the duo continue to develop their sound and put out music that they are feeling in the moment.

For this particular EP, Friedrich and Stephan got the raw ideas for it down while vacationing on the island of Zanzibar. On our premiere and the B2 on the record ‘Iruzu Jam’, the island vibes are readily apparent. From the conga and exotic percussion instrument rhythms to the bright strings and vibraphone loop, a sunny atmosphere is definitely being evoked. A simple, low, rumbling bass really solidifies the tune and makes it perfect for a beach-side set. Perhaps, if just for a few moments, this song can help us forget about the upcoming dreary weather and bring with it some of those warm summer feelings that already seem so far away.

PREMIERE : Rhode & Brown – St Hippolyte [Toy Tonics]

The latest entry into Toy Tonics ‘ catalogue of fine house and techno-leaning releases comes courtesy of label mainstays Rhode & Brown. Snabsnus marks the duo’s fourth release (and third EP) on the Berlin-based imprint, which fans of new era deep house should surely be familiar with at this point.. The EP builds on the aesthetic of their previous release, Tunnel Woman, incorporating heady samples and synth work with both vintage feel and new era stylo.

With gusto, Bolting Bits brings you the premiere for the A1 track on the release. “St Hippolyte” is a moody, pensive joint built on dark, hazy synths and a funky breakbeat. Ultimately, the track climaxes via a thick, acid-inspired riff that leads the arrangement almost to its close. The track, much like the EP, is a clear reflection of the duo’s production approach; an amalgamation of analogue hardware and samplers.

Snabsnus was produced in the commune of L’estrechure in southern France, which might’ve provided some influence for the breezy, chilled vibe of the project. Curiously, there are a few nearby communes named “Saint-Hippolyte”. One has to wonder whether one of these towns named after the theologian-come-saint served as the inspiration for the track title.

In any case, the track and EP will surely please fans of Toy Tonics’ often moody deep house aesthetic. “The A” continues the EP on the acid aesthetic, eventually revealing a mean riff amidst the bittersweet, yet uplifting chords of the lead synth and a snappy drum kit. On the flip side, “Leached Love Boils” is a brighter, cheerful arrangement laced with vocal samples and bubbly progressions. The title track, “Snabsnus”, closes the release out very nicely through use of a stuttering, jazzy progression topped with dusty samples and a vinyl crackle feel.

Toy Tonics doesn’t always drop their EP’s on vinyl (though all of their releases are available digitally), however Snabsnus will be getting the wax treatment. The EP will be available physically starting early next week and digitally either in synchrony with the vinyl release or shortly thereafter.
