Crackazat needs little by way of introduction having released some of the biggest soul-drenched, deep and jazzy cuts on the likes of Local Talk, Futureboogie and Z Records. Bristolian (now relocated to Sweden) Ben Jacobs wears his jazz influences proudly on his sleeve. His one-man live show sees him killing bass guitar and keyboards moves over the top of MAW-esque beats creating that holy grail of emotive, heartfelt music which never loses sight of the dancefloor. Ben already has two LP’s under his belt, as well as a host of remixes for Mousse T and Peven Everett, Joey Negro and Tom Misch. Today it’s his Freerange debut.

Opening track Valentine acts as a calling card for what Crackazat does best. Fat, stripped back, raw, swinging house beats straight out of the Mood II Swing handbook. Live bass and jazzy piano bring an unashamedly musical edge that can’t help but bring the heat to the Dancefloor. Tried and tested by Jimpster, this one is a serious head turner and shows why many are citing Ben as a talent who is knocking hard on the door of Kenny and Louie.

Next up is Back Of My Heart, a more tracky affair with shuffling beats, deep, rising pads and side-chained arpeggios pumping with a fat kick drum. One to get well and truly lost in at 4am. Flipping over we have I Heard You which uses a similar sonic palette to Valentine: crisp beats with driving offbeat hats, lush piano chords and soaring Moog line all making for a serious ear-worm of a tune which you can’t help but bounce to.

Finally, Detroit luminary Patrice Scott gets busy on the remix of Back Of My Heart. The Sistrum label boss brings his Midas touch, delivering a deeper, late night mood which subtly evolves, introducing new piano parts and bassline whilst keeping the rolling, unrelenting groove on track.

London based label Hardmatter is gearing up to release their sophomore project from Detroit legend, Javonntte. Rarely seen but often heard, Javonntte ( has toured with Aretha Franklin, been featured on tracks with Andrés, Amp Fiddler, Blake Baxter & has had some very rare and sought after releases on now defunct label Noveau Riche. More recently, he’s released on Kai Alce’s NDATL and Patrice Scott‘s Sistrum Recordings.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/javonntte-sometimes” /]

The EP begins with the beautiful, “Sometimes,” a track aimed to influence hazy late night excursions where words are scarce and vibes are pure. Javonntte, like so many other house legends, knows how to craft deep, soulful tracks using only a few instruments, something that is indeed challenging and a testament to producers who know their equipment inside and out. Here we have nothing but the essentials, driving analog percussion, a funky bassline, deep pads, and flourishes of synthesizers and pianos all supported by a hypnotically “reverbed-out” vocal courtesy of the man himself. And just as he sings, “some things will never change,” we hope that music like this will never die. Now and forever, deep house is eternal. Detroit stand up.

Bolting Bits is proud to present our new mix series: Blended Bits. Each session will be curated by a member of our close-knit team and showcase the diverse music tastes of our individual contributors while hopefully introducing the listeners to some new music in the process.

The first installment has been put together by our very own Erik Faulkner. Taking a more upbeat approach with some soulful jams sprinkled throughout, the mix includes tracks new and old from FYI Chris, Patrice Scott, M.ono, Roman Flügel and Mall Grab among others…

A few hours before his gig with us at Le Bleury, Patrice Scott kindly answer a few questions from our teammate Oliver.

Hi Patrice Scott, how are you doing? It’s been almost a year now since the release of your first album, Euphonium, which we really enjoyed. What have you been up to musically since then?
I am doing well. Since the release of Euphonium I have been in the studio writing music, as always, working on various upcoming projects.

The record is at once cosmic, deep, and meditative, but still maintains dance floor functionality. Was your approach to Euphonium different to that of your EP’s?
Yes, the approach was different. I wanted to tell a story. Not just release some tracks. I wanted the album to have a chronological order.

Would you say you find creative inspiration primarily in electronic music, or in other outlets?
My inspiration comes from all kinds of music as well as other things. I can be in the car driving and see a building and get inspired. Inspiration comes from many outlets if you are a true artist.

You’ve been DJ’ing for over 20 years now. How have your tastes and DJ sets changed over the years?
When I play a set I always try to take people on a journey. That is why I ask for three hours or more. That has always been and will never change. As far as taste, I always try to play music that represents me and how I feel which is deep, emotional (to a certain extent) and soulful.

You’ve obviously amassed a large record collection during that time. How much new music do you purchase, and is it primarily vinyl, digital, or a balance of the two?
I don’t buy a lot of new music because I don’t find a lot of new stuff these days that really excites me. My purchases are mainly old stuff with a few new things from time to time and mostly vinyl.

Any specific producers or labels on the scene that have been particularly grabbing you recently?
I like Kai Alce and what he is doing with his label NDATL.

What is your studio set-up like? Any favourite pieces of gear?
My studio set up is analog and digital gear. They all are my favs.

Detroit’s reputation as a cultural hotbed of musical styles of all sorts has given the city an almost mythological status to non-residents. Would you say the city has changed recently, especially due to the recent increase in house and techno’s popularity?
The city has not changed. It is still the same. Talented and inspiring artist continue to emerge from Detroit.

Sistrum has deservedly established a great reputation since its inception. Any advice for aspiring label-owners?
My only advice is to try and stand out some kind of way because today’s market is flooded with labels. There are too many labels and you can easily get lost in the shuffle no matter how good your music is.
