Stepping up for his fourth release on Heist, sample wizard Nebraska comes in with some lovely chops and a giant curveball of an A-side that has summer anthem written all over it. Dive into this massive four track EP by the London native who just keeps on bringing the goods!

The ‘Chant des Oiseaux EP’ is built around a collaboration between Nebraska and BeBelle. Anyone who’s picked up Nebraska’s 2021 release on his Friends & Relations label, will have already had a glimpse of what happens when these two get in the studio. They have a mutual love for French vocals; everything BeBelle says, whispers and chants just sounds syrupy sweet. This might be most evident on the title track where modulated Rhodes, the distant chirping and fluttering of birds, and a minimal beat form the foundation for BeBelle’s mesmerizing vocal. The dreamy and contemplative vibe makes you long for those endless days of summer.

The Detroit inspired ‘Skelp Tune’ will take you back to the ground and straight into the club. Nebraska actually sent in a ‘note to self’ saying “you’re not Moodymann” along with the first demo of this to the label. But he doesn’t have to be, as this track has all the clever sampling and disco energy of a classic Nebraska tune, nicely tucked into one hell of a groove! The flip starts with ‘Cop Show’, a no-frills disco house cut with life affirming strings, guitar licks, and a bottom end to freak out your neighbour’s neighbours. The EP closer is another collaboration with BeBelle on ‘Henri Rousseau’, built on a groove that gallops along, with strings, outer-worldly vocals, and howling soundscapes that turn it into a covert disco burner on the more experimental side of house.

On the ‘Chant des Oiseaux EP’, Nebraska effortlessly shows off his impressive sampling skills, electronic fiddling, and powerful drum programming, reminding us that he’s not lost an inch of talent over the years, continually managing to surprise us with his music! Knowing him this is simply because he’s exploring new ways to keep on surprising himself…

Nebraska’s ninth release on his Friends & Relations label presents further explorations of his ‘old records spun in new directions’ ethos. Opener ‘Deep Tune’ places a classic Memphis soul-man monologue in a new, resonant, percussively hypnotic setting.

‘Drum Track 01’ is spacious dub workout, all bass, drum and atmospherics. Side B brings us ‘Shift’; tranced-out 80s soul examined in microscopic detail. ‘Drum Track 02’ is a reframing of a crackly, wild percussion workout with dive-bombing bass drops.

As per previous F&R releases, this is limited to 300 copies on vinyl and is available from 20th July.

Nebraska comes in with a bang for his third release on Heist with ‘Y’miss me baby?’. Taking back centre stage with another release full of disco flavoured electronics. Italian disco man-of-the-moment Giovanni Damico comes along for the ride and delivers a stunning 80’s flavoured remix.

He’s launched his own label ‘Friends & Relations’ where he explores his cut-and-paste style with some seriously cool disco dubs and other sonic adventures. He made a guest appearance on Aaron Dae and JKriv’s Razor ‘n Tape Reserve and apart from his regular musical explorations, he has published a book (Surprise Party Every Week) where we get a glimpse of how Gibbs sees the world. We’re glad to having him for a few questions!

INTERVIEW

Can you tell us where you’re from?
Originally I’m from Leicester, in Midlands area of England.

Where are you based right now?
Since 1996 I’ve lived in London. I’ve lived in the Peckham area for about 10 years.

Nebraska – the film or the place?
Well for me, the name pre-dates the film (which I enjoyed) and I’ve never yet been to the place. To name the project ‘Nebraska’ was a totally random, very quick ad-hoc decision 20 years ago that’s just stuck.

How long have you been involved in music?
Aside from earlier attempts at tape edits, I started trying to make music at school around 1988, where they had some random bits of kit – a 606, a 101, a JX3P and a Boss digital delay – and a music teacher indulgent enough to give non musicians a few clues.

Were you a DJ before a producer?
Love it though I do, I rarely DJ other than for my own pleasure, or at places like Spiritland where I can play much looser, less locked to maintaining a tempo. The concept of DJ’ing has completely informed how I produce though.

How would you describe your style of music when you play?
I like to play across the board, eclectic. My favourite pieces of musical history are the bits when there aren’t yet enough records to sustain a genre – the early days of disco and hip hop when rock, soul, jazz, European electronic and African records all fuelled the fire.

Is your taste the same for your productions?
I most definitely listen to a broad selection of source and inspirational material when I sample.

Do you still buy records?
Yep. Nearly all second-hand, lots from charity shops. I like rooting through and finding
things – it’s definitely an intrinsic part of my process.

Are you precious about what format you play?
Not really, but I’m a vinyl rather than a digital native. I’ve never really learned how to use CDJs properly. Laziness!

Where’s your secret spot to find gems in the world?
Any charity shop really. I spend a bit of time in Rat Records in Camberwell – I like it that their records are only loosely categorised, so finding that obscure rock record in amongst reggae is a possibility. Lorenzo’s Record Shack in Peckham is a hidden gem. I still buy new records, but not with the same fervour I did in the 80s and 90s.

Three records that mean something to you.
1. Double Dee & Steinski ‘Lesson 2’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOW_WH9bG6UVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: DOUBLE DEE & STEINSKI Lesson 2 James (Brown Mix) TOMMY BOY RECORDS 1985 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOW_WH9bG6U)

I would’ve first heard this via John Peel’s late night radio one show in the mid 80s. The wild eclecticism and overt cut and paste aesthetic lit my brain up immediately. Pieces like this fuelled my early teenage record collecting mania.

2. Studio Pressure (Photek) ‘Fusion’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkVf58dpsqgVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Studio Pressure (Photek) – Fusion (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkVf58dpsqg)

I already had the original 7” of break that Photek sampled here, but the genius way that he filleted it and combined it with the dusty Rhodes sample really opened my mind to more imaginative sample sequencing. I bought it from a record shop in Leicester some friends ran. I used to spend entire days there, hanging out listening to music and discussing it with whomever drifted through. An education.

3. Pharaoh Sanders ‘Harvest Time’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ii63fKLTSuUVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Pharoah Sanders – Harvest Time (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ii63fKLTSuU)

I love anything that has that drone, that unmoving, hypnotic centre. This is amazing, especially when it drifts into washes of harmonium later on.

Some people talk of a malaise in the music industry right now. What do you think about that?
As always, I still see young people with positive attitude and energy cutting through, making what matters to them and their audience. Music has been around for as long as we have – it’s the ‘recording industry’ bit that’s possibly transient. Maybe the ‘industry’ bit is the malaise?

Who do you admire in the music industry right now?
Anyone who makes the effort and really cares about what they do. I’m always impressed with those who can draw a community around what they make. What Justin and Eamon have built in NYC with Mister Saturday Night and Nowadays is impressive. James Brown has done some really great stuff with Balamii here on south east London. Who else would link music culture with fried chicken and ice-skating Somerset House?

Favourite female DJ/ producer?
I’ve just recently clocked that ‘Will Powers’ who made ‘Adventures in Success’ in the early
was in fact photographer Lynn Goldsmith. A conceptual art record about self-help… so prescient. And brilliant.

Favourite place/ country/ club in the world to play?
Playing anywhere is really a good excuse to meet new people and share a great local meal isn’t it? I’ve loved playing at Prince Charles in Berlin alongside Session Victim; Concrete in Paris and Claire in Amsterdam with Detroit Swindle have been as much fun as you might imagine.

This is your third release on Heist. How did you first hook up with the label?
I met Lars and Maarten when we did Boiler Room together with Jimpster… 2013 I think. We stayed in touch. They bring a lot of energy to everything they do and have good ears – brilliant DJs and much more eclectic in their selections than most.

How do you feel about social media? I see you recently established an Instagram page?
I’ve resisted having separate Instagram accounts for my commercial and artistic endeavours so far. I want to use @nebraska_ldn to explore more deeply the world around how I use sampling to make music and art, and what the influences on that are. On a wider scale I reckon most of us are beginning to understand that social media is a hall of mirrors, and has had a much heavier effect on global politics than we might’ve anticipated. Some less desirable genies are not going to go back into bottles, unfortunately.

I hear you just wrote a book. What is it called? What’s it about?
I published a book in 2016 called ‘Surprise Party Every Week’, with images I’d made on my phone of found signs and graphics. It was about communication and miscommunication, and celebrated the amateur, raw and unpolished over the professional, slick and refined. I did an exhibition of it here in Peckham and created some limited edition t-shirts with 18.01 London. Limited edition prints of my other work are also available via Jealous Gallery in London.

What can you tell us about this release ? Y’ miss Me Baby?
The thing I’ve learned through releasing music over the years is that you’re rarely the best judge of your own material. Maarten and Lars helped sift down to these 3 tracks from a much larger group. Though brilliant A&R helps, it’s the audience that truly reveals what’s really happening – I’m intrigued to find out what people think about this record. The title track is actually derived from chords I discovered on guitar, though no trace of my original playing remains. The vocal is from an earlier, electro-themed track of which very little appears in the finished work. ‘Dip and Flip’ is a much rawer and unfettered exercise in dynamics and making a lot out of a little. ‘Xiao Long Bao’ came from an experiment in recording myself editing samples ‘on-the-fly’ live, but ended up as quite a carefully controlled composition.

Where can we catch you soon?
No idea. I stopped playing live last year to reassess how I do it, where and why. Still working on that. I’m in the studio nearly every day making something, whether it’s musical or visual.

Brooklyn based label, Razor-N-Tape, has been pumping out delicious selections of contemporary house music since 2012. They’re back to tease our end of summertime sadness with one last block party banger. However, this time around they have relied on beats from across the pond – London-based producer Alistair Gibbs, better known as Nebraska, to be exact. Like many of our favorite house artists, Nebraska comes from the golden age of sample-based hip hop, making him well-suited for utilizing soulful excerpts in developing his funk-filled discography. The latest addition in his long list of tracks that stretch back to the early 90s is an original titled Usin’ Me, which features remixes from the likes of Lovebirds, The Revenge, and someone who we are lucky to feature below.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-nebraska-usin-me-dj-nature-remix” /]
Harlem native, DJ Nature hops on a remix of Nebraska’s “Usin’ Me” to remind us that summer’s never over. Traveling through a smoldering baseline, DJ Nature goes deep into the jungle. His slowed down percussion rework vibrates with chimes, shimmering snares, and rattling hats that gleam through the heavy atmosphere of the track. Throughout the track, shakers become the rattling of snakes and borrowed squelches start to sound like bird calls over this airy, bongo groove. Whether you’re in the forest or on your walk to the train, DJ Nature is sure to ease you gently into the approaching chill.

Make sure to get yourself a copy by pre-ordering the EP here.

Heist Recordings is an adventure started by Detroit Swindle back in 2013 in an effort to have total freedom over their own releases whilst giving that same opportunity to other deserving artists. In the summer of 2013, the label’s first release came in the form of “Break up to make up” EP and ever since, they have gone on to release a wealth of outstanding underground house and electronic music from some massive names such as Fouk, Nachtbraker, Nebraska and now Adryiano (soundcloud).Release number thirty comes from the main-man himself, Adryiano, in Heist’s first full EP of 2018 “Me and You and Her EP” [HEIST030].

The German smashed 2016 then followed through into 2017 the same way, with 5 solo EP’s on labels like Shall Not Fade and Baka Gaijin. His new 2018 EP on Heist sees him introduce some classic signature house vibes along with that addictive acid 303 sound. 4 sensational tracks is what you’ll receive from this EP, including an original and remix of “Move it, move it” by Jamie 3:26, taking Adryiano’s acid banger to a whole other disco-dimension. The first and perhaps best track on the EP is “Me and You and Her” a perfect example of the deep grooving sound we have come to know and love from Adryiano. The final track “Fashion Country Girl” shows his talent in being able to manipulate a sample to keep it fresh and interesting with the perfect amount of filtering. We caught up with the man himself and chatted a bit about the new EP, his influences and more! Read the full interview below.

INTERVIEW

Germany is well known for boasting a flurry of talent in electronic music, can you tell us more about your introduction into music growing up?
I’m not quite sure what has really been the initial kick-off, but as a kid growing up in Hamburg I’ve been skateboarding most of the time – and all of my friends were either into boom bap stuff or punkrock. We were hanging out in a local skate park which has been playing all this kind of stuff. That was like my sanctuary for a lot of years and probably shaped me most in terms of being curious about different styles of music.

When I moved to Cologne, I was playing in a couple of punk bands. And at some point, through punkrock I totally got into the Jamaican sound of the 60s and 70s as we had these punkrock parties where they played ska and reggae. I started travelling quite often to the UK just in order to buy ska and rocksteady records because they were quite hard to get over here. (Still something I love to do when being on road.)

And well to be honest, electronic music was something I discovered quite late. Like I was still rather on the organic or anti-everything music side of things. But somehow I got in touch with house music and couldn’t resist digging deeper.

I can see influences from a variety of genres in your music, which artists helped play a part in defining your musical taste?
A: Oh, way too many to mention. I really listen to a lot of stuff. There’s a bunch of playlists where you can find Bon Iver next to Slayer next to Slave next to Don Drummond next to Paul Johnson next to Tycho next to Post Malone and so on. When it comes to house music, I’d definitely say that the rough attitude that Chicago (or Dance Mania Records in particular) had back in the days, has had a big influence on what I enjoyed and still enjoy in electronic music. This whole vibe gets me every time. But all in all it’s the mixture of all these musical elements that probably defined my taste (if there even is such a thing).

Let’s talk about your latest release on Heist Recordings, what was the inspiration behind the EP?
It was no conceptual EP which made me say „Yeah, I’m gonna produce a few tracks in that typical Heist style so Detroit Swindle have no other choice than releasing it.“

Actually it’s quite funny, because I find the tracks very different. Like the oldest track on this EP is 5 years old (“Fashion Country Girl”). By coincidence I re-discovered it while checking old floppy disks on my MPC. I was almost sure this one would be way too hard for Heist. Or if you take „Move it, Move it“ – it also kind of has a rough attitude, but again is totally different soundwise. Anyway, Lars and Maarten went all in and I’m totally happy about the result.

“Me and You and Her” is mine and undoubtedly many others favourite record on the EP – when in the studio, is this type of style your preference to make or do you get more enjoyment out of a 303 banger like “Move it, move it”?
To be honest, I enjoy doing the kind of music that I feel at the certain moment. It can be everything. Like acid, sample based house, techno, ambient, whatever. It’s just a matter of the current mood and situation.

Q: Heist Recordings are of course founded by the iconic Detroit Swindle; I can see some similarities in the music you both produce – How excited are you to feature on their label?
Oh, I’m totally excited. I’ve been playing their music for ages and who would have thought I’d release on their label one day? Like I’m not really networking or socializing on the internet or sending out demos in mass mails. So the whole thing is still something special for me and I’m super grateful they picked a few tracks they liked and made this EP happen. We recently met and played together in Amsterdam which was super cool. They are both super nice guys and fun to hang out with (and great djs for sure)!

It must be amazing having a legend such as Jamie 3:26 remix your track for the EP, if you could choose any artist to collaborate with on your next release who would it be?
Yeah, Jamie did a great job. His music is special and when I heard he’s going to be part of the game, I was excited. It’s always a special feeling having your tracks re-worked in a way you probably wouldn’t do. And I’m glad how Jamie made use of the parts he got and took the track into a whole new direction.

Collabowise, man I don’t know. There’s a bunch of talented and interesting people out there. Terekke, Nosaj Thing, Bibio. No idea. Maybe even a collaboration that wouldn’t necessarily involve two producers from the electronic music field. Like I’d love to hang out with Justin Vernon and see how he’d approach producing a house track. However, I’m totally open to which paths are gonna cross some day.

You’ve travelled the world with your DJ gigs, so you must have seen some odd things – what’s the weirdest experience you’ve found yourself in?
The good thing is: There are always weird things happening. The bad thing is: There are always weird things happening. Like, I was once playing in some city and the whole stay was super weird from the time I touched ground. The promoter first wanted to change the hotel last minute into some youth hostel with communal toilets while I was checking in, then he arranged a time to pick me up and didn’t show up (I went directly to the club then) and after the gig (around 8 a.m.) I got a wake up call from the receptionist who asked me whether I’m still in the room because some guy (the promoter) wanted to use my room for rest. That was kinda annoying.

Or I occasionally I tend to do cooking tutorials on instagram (yeah, whatever). And once I was cooking thai food – and there was this one guy who dropped me a message and told me to bring the best coconut milk whenever he meets me in person. And so, months later he showed up at a gig in Amsterdam and gave me this can of coconut milk right after my set. That was pretty cool! (And super delicious)

Any upcoming plans that you’re excited about?
Yes, summer is near and I can’t wait to go swimming. Apart of that I’ll most probably tour through Europe, release some music, produce a bunch of tracks, meet friends, go out, travel and eventually start working on an album. But not quite sure about that. Album’s are always such a serious thing. And I’m not. Whatever. Let’s see.

Outside of music, what do you like to do to relax?
After gigs I mostly run around and explore the city I’m in. That’s always super inspiring and calming. When I’m home I enjoy hanging out in the kitchen and cooking. Whenever the weather’s right (which in Germany unfortunately happens quite rarely) I love to just spend time outside, have a coffee and observe what’s happening around me. Like literally for hours. There’s so much weirdness going on all the time. Amazing. But still, music is always part of it. Couldn’t imagine doing anything without music.

Thanks Adryiano, it’s been a pleasure – any shout outs?
Thank you so much for having me. It was fun! Big love to everyone supporting me, whether since day one or yesterday. Of course big shout outs to the Heist Recordings family for making this whole thing happen: Lars, Maarten, Sonja. Shout outs to my Hamsa Intenational posse: DJ Pegasuz, Pjotr, DJ Donnay. My family, friends and everyone reading this.

Alistair Gibbs aka Nebraska (soundcloud) has been steadily producing music for two and a half decades and his current moniker is already seventeen years old. Not nearly enough people in the world persevere and continue to work on their passions for such a long period of time, but Alistair is definitely one of the few who manage to stick with it. A string of releases on Rush Hour Records really propelled him to the forefront of the underground sample house movement and he’s stayed true to his sound ever since, catching the ears of other taste-making labels such as Delusions of Grandeur, Mister Saturday Night, Razor N Tape and of course Detroit Swindle’s Heist Recordings.

I met Lars and Maarten when I did my very first live show, a Boiler Room event hosted by Freerange in London. Being much more experienced performers, they kindly gave me a bit of help on the day, and contacted me about putting out a record a while later.

For slightly bigger labels, especially ones that release vinyl, EPs generally take quite a while to see the light of day. Was your followup EP planned far in advance and is that also a reason as to why you’ve recently started your own label, Friends & Relations, to get your music out faster?
I make music all of the time, and labels like Heist help me find an editorial focus for some of that. I started F&R almost for the hell of it, really, as an experiment. Having my own label doesn’t necessarily equate to ‘faster’… sometimes quite the opposite. Anyone releasing vinyl at present is likely to be used to their schedule being vague, whether they like it or not.

Naming EPs and tracks allows you to give your music an even more personal flair. Some producers don’t pay as much attention to this as others, though. Do the names of these tracks represent anything to you and what does the encompassing EP name symbolise, if anything?
If you look back at a lot of my tracks, there’s a recurring food theme. I’m really interested in cooking and restaurants, and I’ve often used that world as a metaphor in creative discussions. In fact, it’s often been made apparent to me that I speak in metaphors and analogies… that’s probably where the title comes from.

Artwork and branding has been a big part of Heist Recordings in the past. Recently, it seems as if Heist have somewhat rebranded. Being a branding and creative director yourself, did you happen to discuss the artwork for your release with the label and have any say in it?
Not sure that Heist have rebranded as such, just naturally developed their story, which is important to do. As design is my ‘day job’, sometimes I prefer to acquiesce and let artwork happen without heavy involvement from me – Heist have a strong aesthetic and they need to foreground that, so I put my faith in their team and let it happen. Happily, it’s had a great response so far.

You took a little hiatus from releasing music starting around late 2011 and ending in early 2015 but have been back at it pretty regularly since. Was there a specific reason as to why you took a break or was it a culmination of a number of things?
Looking back over what I’ve been involved in since the early 90s, there’s often a few years in between releases. I was probably making stuff even if it wasn’t being released. I’d have to look at the dates you mentioned more closely, but it doesn’t sound unreasonable. I was seriously ill and spent a significant period of time in hospital in 2012, I know that much. Who knows, I might take another sabbatical soon. I took a year off music-making around 2000, and its better when you come back to it with refreshed enthusiasm and clarity.

Producers/DJs currently inspiring you and why? Be it their sound, work ethic or perhaps technique.
Easy answer for me, in that I suggested Laurence for this remix! His tracks are great.

When not focusing on music or a day job, do you have some favourite activities to unwind?
Cooking. And eating. And using the experiences as metaphors.

I’ve contributed a remix of a Fouk track to Heist’s ‘Round-up’ EP, and have an EP of remixes of my Friends & Relations material by other producers coming up sometime in the spring.

You’re known for your sampling work in your original productions but we haven’t seen you remix very much in the past. How different do you find it remixing another artist? Is this something you’re hoping to do more of or would you prefer to spend more time on your own music?
Recently I’ve done two or three remixes and have enjoyed working on all of them. They can be great at taking you out of the personal bubble and renewing creativity. On the other hand, remixes are (to me) less personal/expressive than solo productions so I think a good balance is necessary. I will be doing more, but solo material will always be my focus.

When starting a remix, do you approach it the same way as you would when making an original, sample-based composition? What’s your process like when doing one or the other?
I approach remixes exactly the same way as I use samples in my own music. I’ll chop up what I feel are the most interesting parts to work with, turn them into various instruments in Logic and then play around until I can come up with some melody or a hook and work from there. You recently released your first full length album to great acclaim. It seems that the Laurence Guy and Church connection is a good one. Can we expect to see another EP on Church anytime soon or if its not too early for this question, would you be open to the idea of another album?
It was amazing to work with Church on my album, and also just to write an album in general! I’m not sure at this stage about another EP, but will keep the connection strong for sure. In terms of another album, I am definitely open to it and have already put some thought into what I would like to do. In 2018 I’m focusing on EPs for the year, at least three, maybe four. Second album will wait until 2019…

Lately I’ve re-ignited my love for Caribou/Daphne. I find his balance between weird, psychedelic sounds and straight dancefloor/pop sensibilities really inspiring. Also the sheer amount of good material he has released is pretty staggering. In terms of DJs, the last set that blew me away was Avalon Emerson at Printworks in London, was hooked from start to finish.

When not focusing on music or a day job, do you have some favourite activities to unwind?

At the moment, I work half the time on music/gigs and the other half in a rock climbing centre. When I’m not working, I’ll mainly be in a club or climbing somewhere!

What’s next for Laurence Guy?
Next for me is an EP for Mule Musiq that I’m super excited to get out and some more remixes coming very soon.
