As the saying goes, good things come in twos. Fries and gravy, chocolate and peanut butter, brussels sprouts and bacon (seriously, don’t knock it till you try it) and now Secret Reels and Better Listen Records. The A&R masterminds behind the two labels, Lee Dearn and Martín Miguel respectively, have joined forces, not unlike the two heroes Batman and Superman to fight.. well to bring us good music anyway. Secret Listen Records is the new collaborative effort from the pair and the first release is a four track various artist sampler split in half by artists signed to both parent labels. Secret Reels veterans Chocky and Harry Wolfman make an appearance while Swedish newcomers to the Better Listen roster, Sune and Vitamin D give you a sneak peak of what’s to come for the DC-based imprint.

The man of the hour today is Harry Wolfman and quite frankly it’s a surprise that it’s taken us this long to premiere one of his tunes, as we’ve been big fans for ages. The London export who has recently been spending some time in Spain appears on the A1 of the record and the track is entitled ‘Floozy‘. Built around a lovely jazzy flute sample, the aptly named tune has a wicked percussion rhythm behind it, giving it that easy listening character paired with a dance floor ready groove. Some atmospheric flavours and colourful trills pop up throughout as warm chords lend to the pleasant mood while a nonchalant bassline helps keep those feet moving. Quite the doozy, Floozy is just another example of why Harry Wolfman’s fantastic sample work paired with his ear for a groove have landed him releases on a number of premier labels in the past.

Série Limitée (soundcloud) is a fine London based label formed in 2013. They have previously showcased music from the likes of Steve Frisco, Monsieur Cedric, Anaxander, and Panthera Krause. Vinyl only releases coming in the form of VA 4 trackers are their staple and today we’re happy to announce the 10th instalment in the series.

Kisk (soundcloud) is the alias of Giuseppe D’Alessandro, the Italian native responsible for the creation of the always reliable Apparel Music. He is also curator of the impeccable ‘Jazzy Hour Radio Show’ of which we are massive fans here at the BB HQ. There is more than a hint of jazz influence in his productions, always a good thing injecting that swing and unpredictability into house music. Today we premiere his B1 track ‘Clean Up Down’.

It doesn’t take long for this one to get down to business, light and loose ride hats dance their way over warm chords as the track’s percussion builds nicely. Some lovely ethereal strings come to the fore during a small break and that’s also when the Jazz flute hits, HEY AQUALUNG!! The track doesn’t dwell on one particular motif for too long, evolving and changing but still maintaining it’s charm. The solo jazz flute is the highlight of this laid back rolling groove. We defy anyone to hear a jazz flute and not instantly feel a bit better about things!

The EP on the whole is a well rounded affair, catering for a wide-ranging spectrum of tastes and will certainly be in our baskets come release day which is on or around 8th September. You can pre-order via Juno, Deejay & Redeye.
