A few months after the release of Mawimbi first album “Bubbling”, they decided to have some of its tracks remixed by artists who have been dear friends and collaborators of Mawimbi for a long time (Pouvoir Magique, Jo Bissa, Marius & Cesar, Daniel Monaco, Mr. Boom, Afro Pupo).

A mix of genres and influences, these reworks give a new dynamic to our tracks, from downtempo acid house to Nigerian-influenced afrobeats.

Newcomer Izzy Wise delivers a wonderful funk and afrobeat upcoming EP Keep It Movin’, right before summer, on french label Délicieuse Records. After releasing on japanese institution Mule Musiq, the producer hits us with four serious disco-house burners. «AKA», one of his most disco afro-beat tunes, is a straight-up boat party anthem with happy vibes.

Huge brass instrumentation, strong 4/4 beat and a vocoded vocal are raising a tension towards the entire track which is bridging the gap between Fela Kuti and Moodymann.

‘Dancing People Volume 5’ drops in July of this year, and as you would expect, here is another release that digs deep into archives. London based artist XOA continues the edits series with 2 dance floor focussed belters in the form of ‘Sekele’ on the A-Side and ‘Nimele’ on the B- Side. The label has also teamed up with the legends over at Handy Supply Co to create a limited run of T-Shirts and socks in blue/pink pastel colours to compliment the physical release. Be sure to check these out on their Bandcamp store!

‘Nieme’ is high energy rework of the classic Afro-Disco track ‘Nieme Bolo’ by Charly Kingson from back in 1978. The original vocal takes a backseat in this edit, with XOA carefully sampling the vocal to emphasise selected elements that form new hooks instantly grab the listeners attention and holding it throughout . The unmistakable, emphatic brass stabs from the original are a key element in this edit, as is that classic 70’s funky bassline that could only have been born out of one of the analog Synthesizers of the era. This edit takes the original from the archives and puts it back on the dancefloor where it well and truly belongs!

As ever, strictly limited edition vinyl only release.

Gordon Koang, South Sudan’s enigmatic superstar and ceaseless fountain of infectious, upbeat pop music, kick starts 2021 by revealing a series of remixes from his recent Unity album, this time partnering with two of the undisputed leaders of electronic music in his adopted home city of Melbourne, Australia – Sleep D and Andras.

Stranded overseas after civil war tore apart their country over six years ago, Gordon and his cousin Paul Biel Kueth, who were on tour performing to expatriate communities in Australia, were forced to apply for humanitarian protection and made the heartbreaking decision to leave their families stranded at home, on the chance that citizenship would be granted and reunification made possible.

After languishing on the outskirts of Melbourne’s suburbs for many years, Gordon met the Music in Exile label, a not-for-profit run by members of Melbourne’s flourishing music scene in order to create more opportunity for the city’s numerous refugee and migrant musicians. He immediately assembled a band and tracked his eleventh full-length album, Unity (his first recorded album featuring performances in English and made widely available).

In the midst of a successful run of singles and festival performances around Australia, the Covid-19 pandemic hit, derailing Gordon’s newfound success and growing status as the darling of Melbourne’s vibrant music scene. Forced to find alternatives, Gordon reached out to some of his newfound friends in that city’s community. The result – this set of startling remixes by some of the finest voices in electronic music today.

Gordon, who was born blind in a small village in South Sudan’s Upper Nile Valley, began composing on the thom, a five-stringed instrument sometimes referred to as a Sudanese banjo, He started busking on the streets of Juba, accompanied by his cousin Paul Biel, who would sell homemade cassettes and CD’s. His anthems of peace, love and unity struck a chord, and before long Gordon found himself as something of a folk hero and a voice for peace in a country torn by ongoing conflict.

Now resettled in Australia, Gordon records and releases music in order to support his family back home in East Africa. He still awaits Australian citizenship, and forges on in the hope that this may one day be granted, allowing him to reunite with his wife and family in his newfound home.

Unity is Gordon’s eleventh full-length album and first to be recorded in Australia. It was produced by Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons of Melbourne lo-fi legends Good Morning, and features an ensemble cast of Australian performers. South Sudan and Y Dah are taken from the album, reimagined here by Andras and Sleep D. The remixes were a gift to Gordon and his family, with no fees paid or royalties due – all proceeds go directly to Gordon to help him reunite with his family.

Gordon Koang, Sleep D & Andras ‘Y Dah / South Sudan’ is out through Music in Exile / Above Board (UK) from March 12th, 2021.

When your roots have a broad geographical diversity, it’s very likely this will resonate in the music you make. This is certainly the case with Alma Negra and their new release on Heist. It seems they have embraced all their cultural influences more than ever in their new ‘Dakar Disco EP’. The whole record oozes class and musicality and feels like a carefree collage of the rich musical lives they live. The three originals on this EP vary in tempo and energy, giving you something for each moment of the day or night. They are accompanied by a remix from none other than the Japanese master of cosmic funk: Kuniyuki.

The EP’s closing track ‘Back in town’, is perhaps the clubbiest track of the set. A friendly acid line squeaks over tribal drums & chants and you immediately get pulled in by a great balafon hook. You can really hear how the guys feel at ease combining these worldly elements with modern electronics and ‘Back in town’ is a great example on how to blend these sonic worlds.

Afriquoi are back with their ‘Time is a Gift Which We Share All the Time’ EP. Taken from a line from the track ‘Ndeko Solo’, the title is a reminder of the blessedness of being alive and the intimate connection of all things. This is the first EVER Afriquoi release where the whole band has gone into the studio to record a full live-band sound, playing together at Octagon Studios, putting down songs that were written collaboratively and honed over years on live stages. It was recorded with the assistance of Tom Excell (Nubiyan Twist, Onipa) to help capture the right live sound.

More than any of Afriquoi’s previous releases, this EP allows each member’s individual sound and talent to shine: Jally Kebba Susso’s exquisite kora playing, Fiston Lusambo’s intricate Congolese guitar, uplifting vocals from Andre Espeut, crisp percussion from André Marmot, tasteful chords from Nico Bentley and beats from Oli Cole.

Guitarist Fiston Lusambo explains: “we wanted to create a style of music which does not exist yet by combining Congolese guitar, Gambian kora, African Djembe and mixing them with European music… this EP is a result of our work where each of us has put his talent in it, we think we have now something which is what we wanted”. Parisian label Mawimbi are the perfect match for the band, having established themselves as champions of afro-tinged electronic music , through their long-running nights in Paris, their DJ sets, their label releases and their own productions and remixes for the likes of Oumou Sangaré, Femi Kuti, Cerrone & more.

Carving out an enviable reputation across the globe for his distinctive and highly personal brand of House music, Kiko Navarro’s voyage of sonic discovery has been going strong for almost three decades now. From London to the Far East, Kiko has travelled far and wide with his music, embracing sounds from each continent as he goes.Kiko’s new album, Afroterraneo- also named after his music label- defines the sound of his home. The album incorporates sounds touched by the Mediterranean Sea, drawing influences from Europe, Africa and his roots in the Balearic Islands. Afroterraneo is all about fusion. It includes Afro-Cuban songs like “Okere”, “Karabali” and “Ekobio Monina”, Midwest-African flavour on “Ihabogi Rawaly” and “Beréde”, Flamenco with “La Fatiga”, Balearic emotions with maestro Joan Bibiloni on “El Salto Del Martin” and “Vida”, South African vibes on “Olwakhuthando”, Afro Mbira lines with European TB303 acid blips on “Cacao Ceremony” and it all ends with his own tribute to his mother on “Para Mama”.

Born on Mallorca, Kiko’s sound reflects the sun-drenched, slow living atmosphere of the Balearic island he still calls home. Obsessed from an early age with the more soulful side of US House music, Navarro’s DJ skills soon attracted the attention of nightlife behemoth Pacha who offered him club residencies both in Palma and in Ibiza. Next came a monthly gig at Space Ibiza and the rest, as they say, is history.

A true Renaissance Man; now also a family man, today’s Kiko Navarro is perhaps even more focused and dedicated to his life in music than ever before. An album tour this year will see him play DJ sets in Italy, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, Japan, South Korea, China with many more to be confirmed. Whether in the studio crafting records or in the club controlling the dance-floor, Kiko’s musical mission has become the habit of a lifetime.

Rocksteady Disco‘s newest recruit is Eddie Logix. He’s been at the heart of the Detroit underground for over 15 years, most recently with his Technically Yeah live hardware nights, a grip of ambient and hip-hop releases, engineering for Assemble Sound. He’s one half of left-field funk-hop duo Mega Powers with Pig Pen, and of BLKSHRK alongside Blair French, who first appeared on Rocksteady Disco back in 2016 on …For Todd.

Placebo Palace is Eddie’s first solo dance EP, combining all of this experience into a diverse offering for discerning dance floors. The EP leads with “Que Locos”, a tropical house banger driven by brass and Latin-Jazz piano. “Baby Girl” rounds out the A side, with a dusty R&B vocal sample coupled with a massive and unexpected bassline. The B side is darker and deeper, starting with the frantic Afro-Jazz-Deep House “Sunday Palaver” that we have featured today. Closing the EP is “Bottle Rocket”, a psychedelic surf rock-tinged disco-not-disco chugger, with live guitar by Daniel Monk and electric bass by stphn-b.

It appears that copies of this EP are flying fast! Placebo Palace is set to hit stores January 14th and you can pre-order the record via bandcamp.

From time to time, a new name will appear on the scene with a unique, standout sound that commands people at all levels of the industry to sit up and take notice. Following two sold-out EPs on his vinyl-only imprint, Semi Delicious, UK producer Demi Riquísimo is one such example and on the 9th August he’ll be teaching another lesson on how to ignite the dancefloor with his third release of the year: 54 Reasons EP.

Another four-track, tour-de-force fusion of house, disco and electro, the 54 Reasons EP opens with ‘Bow UFO’ – an upbeat, percussive Disco-fused banger on which Demi gives us a taste of summer by bringing in synthy notes and adding an acidic edge to the track. A2’s ‘Anxious Elephants’ neatly follows on with its deeper, darker sonics, a groove-filled bassline and hypnotic lyrics, topped off with warm pads and soft flute instruments to perfectly balance things out. Flipping over the wax and you’ll find two more on-point cuts: ‘Point One’ delivers with its effortlessly rolling, Disco-tinged groove, as ’54 Reasons’ closes out the EP In a big way, leaving listeners with no questions regarding the enviable talent on display throughout Demi’s productions.

“I’m completely overwhelmed by the support for my first two EPs on my label, Semi Delicious. SEMID003 “54 Reasons” is an honour to the conception of electronic music. Starting in the mid-70s with venues like Studio 54 and producer Gorgio Moroder, into the early 80s with Afrobeat, 90s with Acid House and the 00s when I started to party and listen to the Electro movement, artists like Booka Shade, Erol Alkan and Justice… All the way to the present time – the best time, as it’s a cocktail of all of these eras!” – Demi Riquísimo

Just a few months after the release of his debut EP, Demi has already amassed the kind of support that seasoned veterans can only hope for – multiple plays of every track from SEMID002 on BBC Radio 1 by Danny Howard, Pete Tong, Annie Mac and Eats Everything, and DJ support that includes names like Skream, Optimo, Dusky, Ậme, Horse Meat Disco and even Busy P who described it as “just perfect”. With the diary now filling up with sets at Glastonbury, El Dorado and Gottwood this summer, before an Autumn run of the UK’s biggest club events, 2019 is certainly shaping up to be a game changer for the mysterious Demi Riquísimo.
