A new name for a producer who’s been in the game for a minute, Devante Embers presents his debut EP for Monologues Records.

A truly cohesive EP, its four tracks span a multitude of beautiful piano motifs, Bluesy samples, sweet synth refrains and dusty textures, with the title track looking set to becoming a major dancefloor staple in the coming months. You heard him here first…

Born in Marseille, but based out of London, Pegasvs is an artist many in the underground have gotten to know well over the years. We ourselves have routinely collaborated with the multifaceted producer – either imploring him to expertly craft mixes for our listeners or partnering with him to promote his own tracks and music.

During the time we’ve known Pegasvs, the French maestro has gone onto establish his imprint Burnin’ Music Records as a dependable and timely fixture that has put out releases from artists such as Salomo, Tryezz, and Pegasvs himself.

In their latest outing, the label has chosen to put out a single from little known producer Hotevilla, who also hails from France and occasionally operates under the moniker Kalk. Titled Until Dawn, this original kicks things off with an undeniably catchy, looped vocal that sustains itself throughout the piece – giving it an uplifting, almost anthemic feel from start to finish. Hoteville then mimics the likes of other artists such as Moon Boots, by layering on top a space-aged assortment of playful synths, funky bass and airy strings that transform Until Dawn into quite the luxurious affair fit for any rooftop soiree.

Until Dawn is set to hit stores on September 17th. Make sure to pre-order your copy here.

Her debut single Blackbird caused quite the stir. Now the hotly tipped US vocalist brings us ‘Beware The Stranger’, released on Foundation Music. The track is lifted from her much-anticipated debut album ‘Black Acid Soul’ and it isn’t hard to see the influences on which she reflects, like Billie Holiday and Gladys Knight. Real name Marley Munroe, Lady Blackbird is blessed with a bold, unmistakeable voice that is misting out across the global jazz scene.

On ‘Beware The Stranger’, she takes a huge London dance floor fave from the days of Rare Groove, spinning it around and flipping it on its head. The 70s original, ’ Wanted Dead Or Alive’ was performed back then by The Krystal Generation and made popular by soul ensemble The Voices Of East Harlem, whose classic rare groove version was produced by Leroy Hutson and Curtis Mayfield. This has been the inspiration for Lady Blackbird’s powerful, jazz-influenced reimagining. This stunning version was recorded in Prince’s studio Sunset Sound, and as the track opens, the tempo drops, the mood becomes intimate and the story is told, in her inimitable style. There’s a stranger heading to town and if they cross your path, they’re gonna do you wrong.

On this collection of hi calibre remixes, house legend Ashley Beedle kicks off, taking the original over to the dancefloor with his signature lush strings and sumptuous keys. Daddy Ash delivering a soulful future house classic remix of the highest order. There’s a dub, a stripped back version and bonus beats too.

Grammy nominated producer Chris Seefried travels along the route of the ambient soundscape on his Balearic toned rework, whilst Matthew Herbert, a musician and producer known for ignoring boundaries and throwing away conventions, delivers a stunning sound sculpted ‘Wanted Remix’ and instrumental.

The beautiful thing about culture is that, in the face of any gloomy situation, there is always a glimmer of light, a cause for hope. No one knows this better than a springboard for new talent such as WotNot (K15, Glenn Astro, Deft, Danvers). Any time a world-weary older generation despairs at the spate of venue closures, tightening nightlife laws and changing values, a new cohort of artists is working hard at finding their place in the musical world; a group who know no better times, and so make the most of their environment, facing the world with optimism and can-do attitude.

In this light, WotNot is introducing Beringei, a broken beat producer whose debut release The People, The Place brings focus to the people and communities that make the London music scene so special. In particular it’s a tribute to the dancers at his MOSSA parties (headliners like John Swing, EMG, Debora Ipekel, Ece Duzgit, Cervo, K15), and the community of artists and minds at the Total Refreshment Centre where he shared a studio with label mate William Florelle and DJ’d on The Docks Studios internet radio station.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-beringei-the-people-the-place” /]
Title track The People, The Place hosts syncopated vocals over twisting live bass and shuffling broken beats. Listening (and unavoidably shimmying) to this, it is no surprise that at MOSSA the lights are turned down as low as possible, in tribute to the legendary Plastic People nights that many of this crowd are too young to have experienced, but were formative for Beringei himself.

The vocals and lyrics for Blue Moon were improvised in a single take, and perfectly capture the slinky and sensual but groovy nature of the beat with its delicious bumpy Rhodes and bubbling bass. Wrapping up the release is a wonky, psychedelic remix from William Florelle, whose second WotNot EP will also be out soon.

Sadly the venues this release pays tribute to have since closed, but this EP is not just a snapshot of a beautiful time and place, but a much needed beacon of positivity and a sign of great things to come. Pre-order now.

Scissor and Thread regular Black Light Smoke returns to the Brooklyn label run by Francis Harris for a mini LP of raw, atmo- spheric house. The alias of Jordan Lieb, Emmy Award winning composer/producer/musician, Black Light Smoke drops City Life – six tracks of affecting, deep vibes.

‘In Gold’ is rich in analog warmth, a bubbling deep house roller that echoes some of the New York, Detroit and Chicago greats.
Title track ‘City Life’ is a stripped down rhythm track, populated with stabs, melodic flourishes, and beautifully arranged pads – as well as a killer vocal. ‘Make My Piece’ is built around a vocal hook and roughneck drum track, before opening up with crunchy percussion and a sick bassline. Next one is ‘Up In This’, starting on a dreamy tip, but exploding into life with Lieb’s signature feel for propulsive rhythms and deep, warm tones.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-black-light-smoke-every-beat-no-regrets/” /]
‘Without You’ is a tougher proposition, using heavy compression and distortion to texture the track, while the digital bonus track and our premiere today ‘Every Beat (No Regrets)’ is a fitting end to the release – a woozy, after-hours come down vibe, wrapping up this journey.
Born in India, raised in Australia, and now roaming between cities in Europe and America, jitwam is an artist who wholly embodies the cultural influences that result from living in such a globalized world. For the release of his third EP titled Purple, the producer has decided to focus on a place near and dear to his heart – Brooklyn, New York.

Currently the location where he spends most of his time, jitwam describes the inspiration behind the record as “heavily influenced by the rhythm of New York. The buses, cars, and trains …” He then elaborates that “It feels like a night out in NYC, making your way to the club and ending back at the crib at 5 am watching the sunrise.”

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-jitwam-stronger” /]
If we had to guess where his track Stronger falls on the timeline of a night out, we’d say that it most likely lands around the last call mark – a period in which feelings on the dancefloor are their most euphoric and the night is beginning to wind down just after an unforgettable climax. The reason we say this is that every aspect of this rising club anthem is so positive and uplifting.

From the airy, stringed melodies that loop from beginning to end, to jitwam’s ad-libbed vocals that are as lyrical as they are instrumental, Stronger sends a clear message to its listeners to keep persevering to get all that they want, and all that they need – a message that aligns well with the attitudes of those who choose to work and live in the Big Apple.

Purple EP will be released June 5th via The Jazz Diaries on both digital and vinyl formats.
Marcel Vogel’s Amsterdam based label Lumberjacks in Hell arises once again with something raw, soulful, and extremely fresh for your listening pleasure. This time, they’ve tapped the deeply prolific Bristol-based house connoisseur Andy Compton, who’s had a long and venerable career both as a soloist and part of the legendary trio of The Rurals, and who’s also released more than 31 albums and over 135 EPs. This project sees Andy join forces with the African artist Shamrock and the Swahili vocalist Asali for four sun-drenched boogie tracks that they recorded in South Africa.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/andy-compton-shamrock-nifanyeje” /]

“Nifanyeje,” the projects stand-out track is a slow groover with one hell of a bassline. Adding to the “smoothness” is what seems to be a suite of live instrumentation including organic percussion, gentle guitar, funky brass, light key stabs, and a gorgeous, airy vocal. A track like this demands you to chill. Don’t listen to this in the morning, you won’t get anything done for the rest of the day. If I didn’t have a job to do I’d roll a joint and listen to it 100 times. Anyways, just added this burner to my “Rosé Season” playlist on Spotify. Hand me my slips, fam.Bunny Chow, the 31st EP from Lumberjacks in Hell, couldn’t be a better release. It drops on May 7th, and will likely soundtrack your summer. On May 7th, support the musicians who appear on this record by shelling out some cash for the wax. You won’t be sorry, and you might get laid if you play it.

Straight out of Poland, label boss Marcin Krupa has created a great vibe around this vinyl-only outfit. Other than the high quality of music they put out, the artwork to each and every release also matches that high standard. An attractive trait of the label is the diversity of genres they are home to. ASTR001 consisted of some amazing electronic sounds, an EP we definitely recommend checking out! Then, ASTR003 saw some Hip-Hop flavour introduced to the catalog, along with deep house vibes that then followed into the next release. Which now brings us to ASTR006 with the sound that everyone loves, disco house.

Brand new material coming out of Astropical Tapes in the form of ‘Spring Edits EP’ from disco house up-and-coming star Tech Support (soundcloud). This vinyl will be a hot release with only limited copies being made available. The EP contains 4 wonderfully produced disco edits ranging from smooth groovers to dancefloor thumpers. Today we have the pleasure in premiering the first track on the release, ‘Taking It Back’. We always enjoy listening to Tech Support’s signature percussive drums and this is where this great track starts off, before that beautiful classic disco sample starts to filter into our ears. The bells and stabs floating around give the track great warmth, width and perfectly compliment Air Power’s soft vocals as they cut through the mix. But perhaps the most satisfying thing about this piece of music is the divine cinematic strings that uplift the whole song.

Lay-Far is back with “Be The Change (feat. Pete Simpson)”, a soul infused second single from his upcoming third album War is Over out later this year. The single will be released on Lay-Far’s own label In-Beat-Ween on April 6th and features an additional b-side as well as an alternative mix by Kid Sublime and an acoustic version with dbnn. With an uptempo breakbeat the track builds with a shimmering swirl before the grooving bassline drops in as the first key element. Pete Simpson not only provides the lead vocals but also is credited as a co-writer and performed the bass parts as well. Dreamy synth chords glide around the bassline and drum beats as an additional piano and vocal loops are introduced to add tension in the ascension to the first verse. Simpson’s vocals are soulful and inspiring, with the chorus playing off of the famous Ghandi quote, “Be the change you want to see in this world.”

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/lay-far-be-the-change-feat-pete-simpson” /]

“Be The Change” certainly plays upon the modern funk styles we have seen emerge over the past few years from producers around the globe. Losing a lot of the grit and warmth of past disco styles, this track is crisp and clean, with the drum breaks sitting particularly well within the mix. This helps to compliment the vocals as they are not only pop oriented but political as well. The message is both simple and timely, transmitting a powerful and traditional idea by way of an uplifting disco groove.

“Be The Change (feat. Pete Simpson)” is out on April 6th on In-Beat-Ween Records.
