For the 25th instalment from House of Disco we see Munich duo and Toytonics regulars COEO explore pastures new with an EP bathed in the neon glow of the 1980’s. Inspired by cheap karate films and old Baywatch episodes the duo hone in on something new among all the old machines and familiar sounds.

‘Habibi Dub’, the opening track elevates the forgotten about pan-pipe to sunny perfection, perfect for slow motion running on that honeymoon in Hawaii. The second of three originals ‘Sharks, Lies & Videotape’ takes the dune buggy for a blast along the beach looking for trouble while the third offering ‘Joe Armstrong Theme’ defends your dojo from unwanted nighttime intruders.

Alongside the originals are two superb remixes from one of our favourite producers ‘Lauer’ and young Irish team ‘Mix & Fairbanks’

Today’s premiere comes to you from the illustrious German label Toy Tonics. Presented by label bosses Mathias Munk Modica and Kapote, Teutonik Disaster showcases the crazy funky side of Germany’s underground disco and new wave from the late 70’s and early 80’s, as they are reworked into dance floor stompers. Most of these bands didn’t reach a bigger audience. Their records never got pressed to more than 300 – 500 copies as they were a number of years ahead of the huge commercial explosion of German pop in 1984: The NDW aka “Neue Deutsche Welle”, with Nena’s humongous hit 99 Red Balloons. The bands featured on the compilation released their music before the NDW hype and later broke up. Plenty of these early bands are best forgotten but if you dig deeper you’ll find the gems, bursting with style and attitude. And that’s just what Toy Tonics heads Mathias Munk Modica & Kapote did. They hit gold.

While the whole EP is a spectacular peek into a time capsule of German boogie, our choice for the premiere today is a reowork of Carmen’s “Schlaraffenland” by Kapote. Like most of the songs on this EP, Schlaraffenland originally came out in 1982.  Carmen’s amazingly sensual German vocals stand out and the groove could easily have been on a Blondie or Talking Heads album.  The song was co-produced by Piet Klocke, who was part of another white boy funk group called Die Tanzdiele and later became a comedy star on German TV. Carmen’s sound draws a parallel to the New York Art-Funk Scene, as reimagined through a Soviet Era German lens. The track is a steady burning boogie anthem.

With a proper bunch of releases on labels such as Toy Tonics, Public Possession, Rose Records, Let’s Play House and Needwant, the name of house duo Rhode & Brown surely pops up into one’s head when the conversation rotates not only about Munich’s house scene, but also probably about the whole house scene in Germany. Guys have cemented their names into the game by not only producing proper house beats and melodies, but also by playing extensively in Germany and abroad. Friedrich and Stephan also run their own label Slam City Jams and it’s 5th release is about ready to see the light of day and tickle the earbuds of house music aficionados worldwide.

One of the most important people in my life name is Sue. She is kind, she is warm and ever relaxed. Now I’m almost certain that Australian expat Jad & The doesn’t know her personally, however he’s crafted a record that’s a reminder of all the amazing things she’s done for me.

At Bolting Bits, we’ve always been loyal fans of Jad & The’s productions. Having previously dropped EP’s on classy imprints such as Toy Tonics, FINA Records and his very own Beats Of No Nation, he has now linked up with Julius Steinhoff, owner of Down By The Lake. As release No.4 on the label Jad grabs a spot by the still waters alongside Saile, Ron Blanco and TRP.

Our attention is set firmly on the A1 ‘Two Dancing’, a beautiful ride. Melding a stunning piano scale, steady kick drum, hypnotic hi-hats and a vocal snatch that sounds like my godmother’s name, we have a tune that should cast your mind back to fond memories…whatever they may be? The Aussie has an obvious knack for writing, selecting but a handful of instruments and somehow always stringing them together in harmony. I bet this would go down an absolute treat at a wedding reception for a couple’s first dance. They’d of course have to be lovers of house music but hey aren’t we all.

Hop to it as this one’s a vinyl only release with a sterling Moomin remix of the B2 ‘Archy Krules’.

They say consistency is key, and German imprint Toy Tonics, have it in spades. Since 2012, the label simply haven’t pressed a bad tune. Kickstarting things with scrumptious releases from the likes of Black Loops, COEO and Kapote, these Berlin blacksmiths are yet again chipping away at that next funked-out piece of audio, the world needs to hear. And today, it’s ‘Broken Dub’, from Lyon based artist, Mangabey (Jose Fehner).

With quite the nomadic past, spending his childhood living in caravans between France and Africa (his parents part of a wild theatre troupe), Jose has plenty of influences to draw upon. Having already a firm relationship with Toy Tonics, with the release of his ‘Chicago Memory’ EP a few months back (be sure to suss Folamour’s Remix of ‘GUFM’), the Frenchman comes storming through with the ‘Joy Kill’ EP.

‘The record press is a complicated piece of equipment weighing two tonne, it moulds records by compression…’ Welcome to the B1, Broken Dub. Breaks, compressed drums and West London ad-libs define the piece. A jazz pianist and vintage synth nut by trade, Mangabey brings real character to what’s a steady grind. This one sounds authentically UK, a familiar feel to Jamie XX’s ‘All Under One Roof Raving’. A track best heard in an underground carpark, in the dead of night…or wherever you like really. Oh…and Jose’s only just hit 22, already locking in Fouk and Glenn Astro on remix duties. Watch this space fam!

Since first catching ear of Germany via Australia convert Jad & The’s (Jad Lee) productions thanks to Berlin champions Toy Tonics, the long haired yahoo has continued to impress this writer. Between countless sets and co-managing the ever popular BEATS OF NO NATION, Jad’s still got time left over to craft his own audio wizardry.

This number’s off the incoming Twist Club EP out through London’s FINA Records. FINA have released previous gold from the likes of Saine, Closed Paradise and Paso. Owner Simon Morell and Corbi have one of the best attitudes about what he chooses to press saying “I’m interested in depth, warmth, funk: something I can play in years to come and still think it’s ace. I have zero interest in following the trends and signing stuff just because it’s Beatport Top 10 fodder.”

Simon we wholeheartedly agree! Best get twisting…
