Osaka, Japan’s Metome joins the roster of Philipp Priebe’s Stólar imprint this March with his ‘Trail’ EP, backed by remixes from Tilman and Priebe himself.

Over the past two years Philipp Priebe’s Stólar imprint has been steadily gaining recognition as a purveyor of some of the finest contemporary deep house and left of centre electronica, the label has acted primarily as a platform for Priebe’s own ethereal and hypnotic output while welcoming remixes from the likes of Jacques Bon & Drux, Vilette, Johanna Knutsson, FDF and Japan’s Metome. The latter returns here to mark the first release of original material not from Philipp on Stólar, although the Osaka-based artist’s material fluidly melds into the catalogue through its deftly crafted, hypnotic style.

Up first is ‘Graftage’, laid out over six-minutes with looped bass stabs, airy textures and stripped percussion, perfectly setting the tone for the EP. Title-track ‘Trail’ follows and shift focus to shifting pads, bright piano tones and choppy distorted bass atop a crunchy, shuffled drum groove. ‘Indoor Ivy’ then completes the original material on the project, diving deeper via an amalgamation of sweeping atmospherics, metallic synth chimes, modulating bleeps and a low- slung rhythm.

Tilman’s ‘Seaside Mix’ of ‘Trail’ follows next, an in typical fashion from the German producer he reshapes the original with his own vintage house feel bringing swinging drums and rounded subs into the forefront while reworking the original’s keys and atmospherics with a more house focused feel. Philipp Priebe’s ‘A Darker Red Remix’ of ‘Graftage’ then completes the package, beautifully stripping things down to a cinematic, nuanced flow of pads, bells and shakers for the first half before the latter weaves in the original bass hook and a sturdy kick drum to ride out the rest of the rework with a more driving feel.

Starting off with a balearic, yet uplifting summer house groove on A1 featuring Flying Solo on keys, ‘Find Your Power’ comes in with beautiful simplicity in every part. Followed up by ‘Caught Slippin” on A2, a groovy, old school-rooted garage house cut completes the A side.

‘Ghetto of My mind’ featuring RR introduces the B side with a floor-filling, groovily slamming and deeply organ filled 4-to-the-floor club roller, while ‘Revue’ finishes up the record with a heavily jazz infused, tripled-tuned swing to get down to.

Germany’s Tilman inaugurates his new imprint Pleasant Systems this June with the ‘Adventures’ EP, featuring collaborations with Will Buck and Rhode & Brown.

Mainz, Germany based producer and DJ Tilman has been dropping his twist on contemporary house over the past decade on labels such as Shall Not Fade, Life Is For Living and Quality Vibes as well as his own Fine imprint, run in collaboration with Johannes Albert. Here though, Tilman marks a new beginning with the launch of Pleasant Systems, a new imprint designed to shine a light on vintage inspired house sounds from both himself and friends.

Up first is ‘What’s Mine Is Mine’, a collaboration with Brooklyn’s Will Buck which lays down an amalgamation of airy synth pads, choppy bass stabs, bright piano lines and enchanting flute like melodies atop a swinging drum groove. ‘Strawberry Fields’ follows, stripping things back to shuffled percussion, billowing ethereal textures and wandering sub bass tones while fluttering brass tones and resonant leads ebb and flow within.

A firm favourite here at Bolting Bits, Tilman has had a busy 2018, providing us with new goodies almost on a weekly basis. Thankfully, the German producer shows no signs of slowing down, starting the new year with a blissful Tales And Reactions LP.

Out on fine, a label that he runs with Johannes Albert, the 8-track double vinyl release is a true journey and a testimony of Tilman’s talent and diversity. Tilman has a long track record of putting out deep, excellently produced house music, but on Tales And Reactions he really comes into his own. The album is all about mood and feel, and each track is set up with a rich mix of samples and loose drum grooves to create warm and hazy vibes. The focus is on deep and spacious house cuts, weaving lazy pianos and half heard vocals.

Today we are glad to share Broken Dreams, a classy house track, dripping with summerish feel-good vibe. German producers Tilman and Johannes Albert have been cranking out crafty disco-sampling house music and fun, gritty tools under their FINE brand for about two years now. The latest comes from Mainz-based Tilman, in the form of the four track Beyond My Soul EP. Like past releases in the catalogue, the record hosts useful sample-based cuts and edits for the disco-minded house fan.

Our premiere comes via the A1 slot on the 12″, “You Can’t Hide The Rumors”, which ups the tempo for a slightly melancholy affair. A big breakbeat serves as the backbone of the track, with well-timed percussion samples and open hats adding motion and groove. Front and center is a fluttering piano, accented by gloomy strings and filtered vocal chops. It’s a bit more frantic in speed and vibe than the often playful stylings of recent releases on the label, but provides nice variety for the four-track offering.

On the other grooves are a grip of disco flips with different utilities. “Talking About Today” combining Keni Burke and Mary Jane Girls in an uptempo and swingy affair for the A2. Meanwhile, the B-side ventures into more laidback territory, with guitar-driven soul chops setting the summer mood. Be sure to keep an eye out for this solid record, which is now available on the label’s Bandcamp.

One of the two bosses of German label Fine has four funk-filled, rolling tunes prepared for its seventh release. Look out for Tilman’s (soundcloud) dance-inducing, soul-seducing quartet of sample-heavy house and disco jams out on January 18.

A1 is packed with the usual disco/house sonic suspects: strings, jazzy keys and heartfelt vocal loops. It’s a credit to the Mainz-based producer that the bass varies significantly and with dynamism, but subtly enough that it mainstays the groove alongside the drums throughout the track. Cut 2 on the record stands out with its fluttering flute-loops, that float in and out on top of the beat throughout the song. Pleasant vocal hums, that almost sound like pads, smoothly fill out the background until about halfway when various soul-heavy vocal samples give the song a warm and almost contemplative touch.

Our premiere track from the EP, Stay Here Forever, will consume listeners with its heavy and full bass-end, and splashy and crunchy top-end. The track’s flow is now and then broken up aptly and evenly by a sequence of chopped and stuttered chord samples – not too dissimilar to a rolling Daft Punk disco thumper – to make it all the sweeter when the drums punch back in. Perhaps undeservedly buried as the record’s last track, Take Me For Your Love is arguably, overall, the EP’s most dynamic. Two guitar riffs (the first, as if sampled from the legendary Voodoo Chile’s unreleased cousin) come in interchangeably. Along with an ethereal chord progression of strings, they give the song an impressive balance of melodic simplicity and depth.

Following in the scuffed up, skate shoe footsteps of many of this year’s breakout producers, Slamb (soundcloud) came on our radar after appearing at the top of Axe on Wax’s PNP 002 — a Bolting Bits favorite and thoroughly of the times V/A compilation of cheeky and sleazy edits and reinterpretations presented. Once again holding on to his A1 spot, Slamb is now debuting on Whyte Numbers’ (remember, sometimes Blaq Numbers) 4th release alongside fellow up-and-comers Tilman, Enliven, and DJ Psychiatre.

All four tracks here are perfectly in tune with the current movement of rough, DJ-ready tracks with well enough intrigue for the casual listener. With “I Want Your”, we’re treated to Slamb’s knack for unearthing catchy samples and combining them with dusty, in your face grooves. Nothing’s hiding in this straightforward belter and it comes to life as a perfectly suited club track arranged to dance-floor perfection (well, almost perfect — we’ll let the listeners and DJs decide about the surprise fade out at the end of the track).

On “You will feel better I promise” Tilman goes toe-to-toe with Slamb for banging, feel-good edit while dialing up the crunch factor somewhere between an old cassette and your Aunt’s forgotten (and dusty) record collection. The B-side tones things down ever so slightly with Enliven smart and synthy, “Waitsome” and DJ Psychiatre’s perfect closer of a track, “Let me tell u”.

Whyte Numbers 004 is available now for pre-order and is due out in early December. As with the previous 3 release, 004 is vinyl only so if you want to get your hands on it, you’d better act quick.
