Since establishing themselves as a wax-only powerhouse with their first release back in April, Brooklyn’s 13th Hour Records has been firmly on our radar. 13th Hour Vol.1 gave us a taste of the modern take on classic house we can expect from the imprint and left us thirsty for more. Thankfully, the 13th Hour Crew is back to quench that thirst with a fiery three tracker of raw dancefloor deepness.

13th Hour Vol.2 is the label’s second V/A release, welcoming three emerging artists from three of the world’s most talked-about scenes: Tbilisi’s Hamatsuki, Bristol’s deRijk, and Brooklyn local M. Vaughn. The outcome is a diverse 12” of club ready bombs: music for the 13th hour indeed.

The track we are premiering today comes from the up-and-coming Bristolian deRijk, whose playful, lo-fi takes on deep house have previously been one of Bandcamp’s best kept secrets. Sitting on the A2, deRijk’s ‘The Realm’ (a nod to Chantal’s 1992 banger) samples the original in a refreshinglyauthentic way, giving the track anthem potential in its own right. The track establishes itself as a heavy hitter right from the outset, with a hearty kick and some sizzling hats. Enter that nostalgic vocal and an uplifting piano melody and we’re transported to a world of 90’s eyes-closed hands-in-the-air mayhem. Pure four-four euphoria.

Tenured house label Apparel Music‘s latested release comes from the hands of Toulouse producer Mangabey, who has demonstrated a knack for funky hardware work with past releases on Boussole and Luud Discs. His first release on Apparel comes here in the form of the How I Feel EP, slotting in as #8 of Apparel’s release APLTD run. It’s a three-tracker displaying a nice variety, from the Luvless-like grand piano riffing of “GLQ” to the pulsating 90’s house stabs of “You Don’t Stop”.

Your Bolting Bits premiere comes via the title track, which sits comfy on the A-side. It’s a heady, jazzy synth jam topped off by delicate high hats, quirky percussion and thoughtful vocal samples. “How I Feel” is reminiscent of the tasty midtempo house jams cranked out by labels like Big Bait in recent days past, via the masterful Glenn Astro and Italian gear nerd Kian T. A nice compliment to the other two tracks and a highly playable track for fans of more jazz-leaning and hazy house work. The EP should be out real real soon at your favorite dealer.

Quartet Series (soundcloud) emerged last year, a seriously good label with a not so serious aesthetic. Nachtbraker first foray into label management was warmly received. They allowed a whole host of established and new producers show their ‘good’ and ‘bad’ side on 4 track comic strip themed vinyl releases. There are many tracks from the 4 releases that float my boat, namely the Ponty Mython, Loz Goddard, Saine and Darko Kustura cuts.

There are labels out there that take themselves a little too seriously so when Quartet series came along, it was like a breath of fresh air. You can tell that a lot of time, effort and love has gone into this project; from the full sleeve artwork and inserts to the actual quality of the music and A&R.

The next chapter of the Quartet Series story starts with a solo artist EP by relative newcomer Scott Franka (soundcloud) entitled “The Gym”. The track we are premiering today is called Toenail.

Scott’s beats sound like they have been ever-present at the gym, the kick drum has some muscle mass behind it, the clap is meaty and the hats sound larger than life. By contrast, the arps that greet you within the first minute are dreamy and light. This really is a track with impressive synth work, face-melting chord pads, gritty acid style lines, fresh-as-fuck melodies and a host of clever panned effects. The track holds it’s real power in the lower end of the spectrum, glimpses of the bass tease you until around 2 minutes. This is where the full bass sucker punch hits you square in the chest! TKO! Sensory overload! A club stomper, one for the peak time bruisers. Scott Franka is now on my radar and I suggest you stick him on yours too.
