Blur Records is proud to present the debut of Irish DJ and Producer – Tree Threes – who delivers a superb 5-track EP entitled “Our House” featuring 5 remixes by the outstanding producers Henrik Villard, Henna Onna, Manuel Kane, Max Caesar & Sune.

Born & raised in Cork, Ireland, Tree Threes is known for his distinctive sound, ranging from House to Broken Beat, inspired by fellow Cork natives Fish Go Deep & the British Broken-Beat scene.

The now London-based producer, who has released a flurry of tracks and EPs on some of the most prestigious house labels on the planet, has now dropped a wonderful 5-track EP with us entitled “Our House” and as a celebration, we decided to invite close friends of the label and some of the hottest producers in the scene at the moment: the Norwegian producer Henrik Villard, Armenian wunderkind Henna Onna, the Greek prolific artist Manuel Kane, the German upcoming talent Max Caesar and the Swedish Honey Butter label boss Sune.

Tree Threes delivers a superbly well-composed EP of understated House music, with the remixers taking it to another level with their quirky and slick reinterpretations of the originals, in what promises to be one of our most successful releases so far.

Since its re-launch in 2019, prolific Valencia-based House label theBasement Discos has released more than 80 EPs, featuring artists such as COEO, Rhode & Brown, Marc Brauner, Tilman, Hotmood, and Kid Simius, receiving support by the likes of Moodymann, Disclosure, Cinthie, Jamie Jones and Mousse T. Therefore it’s about time to finally feature a release of the Spanish House label with the walking house mascot on Bolting Bits.

With his ‘Hotline’ EP, Berlin-based producer, DJ and Luca Olivotto makes his long-awaited debut on theBasement Discos. The EP consists of three original tracks and remixes by Sune and David Silver. The title track, ‘Hotline’, is an energetic, synth-loaden House track with a catchy main melody and acid bass, reminiscent of the House hits produced in Italy in the 80s and 90s. In the classic piano House groover ‘Sweetest Thing’, some honey-sweet bells play around with the piano stabs, bassline and cowbells. ‘Azzurro’ means “blue” in Italian, and just as its names suggests it, the sounds like a party on a beach of the Mediterranean sea. With its funky guitar riff, driving bassline, punchy drums and uplifting percussion, this track fits perfectly on theBasement Discos with its signature “buena onda” (Spanish for “good vibes”) sound and is a true party kickstarter.

Honey Butter Records head honcho Sune remixes ‘Hotline’ in his very own style. The result is a dreamy, warm and organic Deep House track whose guitar riff, ethereal synths and groovy bassline will take you on a journey both at home and on the dancefloor. Sisyphos Berlin resident DJ David Silver also chooses a more relaxed approach for his remix of ‘Azzurro’, creating a very tasty Disco track centered around the guitar, 80s-style lead synth, bass guitar and (newly added) soulful vocal sample.

All in all, a well-rounded EP which flows seamlessly from 80s-inspired House through Deep House to classic Disco.

As we head into the holiday season, many of us can finally start to breathe a deep sigh of relief. We are now a year removed from the coronavirus pandemic and dancefloors around the globe are getting back into the full swing of things – welcoming many of their patrons with open arms and vaccine checks. Although we should not declare victory just yet, it looks like the largest disruptive force of the 21st century might be behind us. With booster shots in hand, the next couple of months should be utilized as a time for us to relax and gradually return to our old selves. For those reading this page, that typically means getting back to our favorite clubs and venues to let loose all the pent up energy from the past several months.

The song we are fortunate to share with you today comes from Berlin-based maestro Siggatunez and goes by the name “Day of My Life.” From its airy assortment of strings to its complementary mix of soulful vocal samples, this track embodies the sort of joy many of us are feeling at the moment – as we get to resume the lives we had before 2020. Certainly a tune DJs will salivate to play at the start of their sets, “Day of My LIfe” contains a mood-setting arrangement of melodies that signal to its listeners the best is yet to come!

Sune’s newest EP ‘Extraordinaire’ will drop on Apparel Music and they are incredibly happy to finally be able to welcome such a talented artist to their family! The title itself perfectly depicts the sensations that this amazingly classy and groovy record gives at the first listening and the artistic awareness that the Swedish producer brings in all his four glorious tracks.

Hailing from Malmö, Sweden, Bolting Bits regular Emil Sune has found a way to keep himself busy while most artists’ creativity has stalled throughout the pandemic. Having just launched his sub-label Mostly Cozy in February (which already has 3 releases to its name), Sune has somehow managed to set aside time in his hectic schedule to work on his own music. Arguably his most ambitious effort yet, the producer has chosen to team up with the legendary New York record label Let’s Play House for a second time to release his LP Everything is Fine.

The record is a proper full-length and contains 10 infectious tunes that showcase the sort of jazz-infused house melodies we’ve grown to recognize Sune by. Although it’s difficult for us to pick our favorite of the bunch, we have decided to premiere his lead track Expertis.

Whimsical in its temperament, this original utilizes an assortment of looped synths and percussion as its anchor and playfully builds upon these elements throughout its entirety. Before you know it, Sune’s layered basslines and arpeggiated chords gradually get your head nodding and body grooving – whetting the appetite in anticipation of what’s to come next. This comforting arrangement of sounds perfectly encapsulates this album’s core message and the timeliness in which it’s written. Sometimes you just need someone to tell you, “Everything is fine…everything is fine.” And given the year we all just had, this is precisely the energy we need right now.

Everything is Fine can be streamed in full here. The vinyl is set to hit stores June 8th!

Mostly Cozy is the new sub-label of Honey Butter Records, an imprint operated by head honcho and producer Sune. Launched during the midst of a global pandemic, Sune set out to create a label that meets the needs of dance music aficionados today. In a world where most music venues are closed and hanging on for dear life, there isn’t much of a scene to speak of these days. In fact, most of us haven’t even seen a dancefloor in months. Understanding our sad state of affairs, Mostly Cozy is here to ensure we’re as comfortable as possible as we patiently wait for the dust to clear and better days to appear.

Fittingly, the title of their first release is Patiently Waiting and it’s a 20-track compilation of songs by Sune and some of his closest friends. The list includes Bolting Bits regulars like Saine, Carlo, DJ Psychiatre, Ari Bald, Cassettes For Kids, and Sable Blanc just to name a few. Although we had our pick of tunes to premiere, we felt the track that embodied the ethos of the record was “Solsting” – an original by Swedish upstart Fidde.

It honestly doesn’t get much cozier than this. Reminiscent of Swedes that came before him like HNNY and Axel Boman, Fidde is able to craft an ambient and playful selection that can only be described as pure sunshine! Everything about the song exudes a sort of ‘dawn of a new day’ mentality – from the sounds of nature awakening and seas rising, to its orchestral and uplifting jazz melodies, you cannot help but put a smile on your face upon first listen.

So please, get your comfiest socks and make your favorite warm beverage for this one! Patiently Waiting is scheduled to come out later this month on February 26th. You can pre-order your copy here! All proceeds will be donated to charity.

Malmö-bred party boy Sune is known best for his tendency towards dusty drum kits and jovial, sun-kissed samples and chords. His latest EP, on London label Live Ones continues this aesthetic. Mimosa Kuriosa packs together five tracks of both sample-driven and hardware based jams.

While the A1 satiates the cheeky disco edit crowd by flipping a certain Shalamar favorite, A2 and B1 sit nicely into the chirpy and smooth midtempo vibe that Sune slings so well. In the latter, we have our premiere. “That Familiar Feel” is indeed familiar. The producer’s trademark snappy drum programming starts things off, coupled with a filtered bassline. As the lowpass is lifted, the sample reveals playful, jazzy rhodes action and a seductive brass section. It’s a swingy affair that will certainly please fans of the Swedish producer’s sound. The rest of the B-Side, meanwhile, sees Sune exploring more live instrumentation in his production, but reaching the same bright and peaceful moods.

The EP is out now on 12″ vinyl and available to cop here.

As the saying goes, good things come in twos. Fries and gravy, chocolate and peanut butter, brussels sprouts and bacon (seriously, don’t knock it till you try it) and now Secret Reels and Better Listen Records. The A&R masterminds behind the two labels, Lee Dearn and Martín Miguel respectively, have joined forces, not unlike the two heroes Batman and Superman to fight.. well to bring us good music anyway. Secret Listen Records is the new collaborative effort from the pair and the first release is a four track various artist sampler split in half by artists signed to both parent labels. Secret Reels veterans Chocky and Harry Wolfman make an appearance while Swedish newcomers to the Better Listen roster, Sune and Vitamin D give you a sneak peak of what’s to come for the DC-based imprint.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/harry-wolfman-floozy” /]

The man of the hour today is Harry Wolfman and quite frankly it’s a surprise that it’s taken us this long to premiere one of his tunes, as we’ve been big fans for ages. The London export who has recently been spending some time in Spain appears on the A1 of the record and the track is entitled ‘Floozy‘. Built around a lovely jazzy flute sample, the aptly named tune has a wicked percussion rhythm behind it, giving it that easy listening character paired with a dance floor ready groove. Some atmospheric flavours and colourful trills pop up throughout as warm chords lend to the pleasant mood while a nonchalant bassline helps keep those feet moving. Quite the doozy, Floozy is just another example of why Harry Wolfman’s fantastic sample work paired with his ear for a groove have landed him releases on a number of premier labels in the past.

Expect the release to hit the shelves at your local record shop in a couple of weeks or pre-order your copy here.

Lagaffe Tales (soundcloud) is a deep house label forged from fire and ice in the relatively small land mass full of contrasts known as Iceland. Based in the capital, Reykjavík, Viktor Birgisson and Jónbjörn Finnbogason began crafting out a local scene in the most sparsely populated nation in Europe. With only roughly 330 000 inhabitants, finding talented, homegrown producers in a niche scene sounds like quite the challenge, but it is one that Viktor Birgiss & Jónbjörn have managed to tackle in spectacular fashion. Both talented producers in their own right, they’ve also managed to unearth the likes of Davíð & Hjalti (one half of which also goes by Felix Leifur) and ‘one man supergroup’ Moff & Tarkin, making their first two vinyl EPs exclusively Icelandic. Their most recent sampler dipped into the international pool a bit, bringing back producers who have helped shape the sound of the label over the years.

The increasingly busy pair behind the label kindly took some time to answer some questions for us about their label, how they’ve progressed over the years and the Icelandic scene in general. Find out more about Lagaffe Tales below:

INTERVIEW

Hi Jónbjörn and Viktor, the label was founded back in 2012. What was going on in your lives at the time? Had you known each other well before then and what led to the decision to found an imprint?

(Jónbjörn) At that time there was a lot going on in the scene in Reykjavík. We had been dj’ing together for two years and we wanted to release some of the music that was being produced by fresh new faces in the scene.

(Viktor) There were no domestic labels involved in the house scene at that time. Instead of trying to push our unknown music to the labels abroad we decided to do it ourselves. It was also out of curiosity that we started the label. Would anyone buy the music?

(Jónbjörn) We both come from different corners of Iceland, Viktor is from the capital, Reykjavík, and Jónbjörn grew up in one of the western fjords of Iceland, Hnífsdalur.

(Viktor) We first got in touch on a popular Icelandic chat website around 2009 under a forum called “Dance music” where we shared DJ mixes and talked about music. Viktor sold his first mixer to Jónbjörn and shortly after that he came to Ísafjörður to play at one of Jónbjörns first house event. Jónbjörn eventually moved to Reykjavik where we decided to dj together as a duo called Gaston Lagaffe (hence the name Lagaffe Tales). We worked together at the bar we both wanted to play at the most but we knew no one in the scene so we worked our way to the DJ booth at Kaffibarinn networking along the way.

Can you tell us the meaning behind the name Lagaffe Tales and if you had to sum up the ethos of the catalog, what would it be? What sorts of sounds are you listening for in a release?

When we started dj’ing together we decided to use the name Gaston Lagaffe as a tribute to these Belgian comics by Franquinn that we loved when we were young. All that back catalogue is somewhat our journey through different styles of house music. It started out as a collection of Icelandic house music that grew into something bigger and connected like-minded artists in the scene that we connect with musically and also on a personal level.

The artwork for each EP is very appealing, whether it’s a pattern, full image or a simple white label stamp. Who is behind the imagery and how is it decided upon each time?

Jónbjörn is a Graphic designer and has been taking care of the visuals since we started out. His style has developed a lot since we begun and all the artworks, posters and flyers have given him a creative freedom to experiment with different styles and methods. Usually, the designs happen while listening to the release and trying to make the overall feel of the release fit with experimental patterns and colours.

(Viktor) You can clearly see Jónbjörns style develop from when he started at the Iceland Academy of The Arts to where he finished (2013-2016). And he also started an artwork challenge project amongst his classmates for doing artworks for some of the digital releases at that time.

You’ve released tracks from artists domestically in Iceland as well as abroad. Is there any method to your A&R work? Any pleasant surprises with a past release?

(Jónbjörn) We try to keep the artist close and usually a good friendship will come out of this collaboration.

(Jónbjörn) The thing that surprised us the most was how everybody in the scene is connected in one way or another, one connection leads to another one. Some kind of a ripple effect. So, we’ve released a lot of music through some connections that happened by coincidence.

(Viktor) We started out releasing local artists and eventually just released music that we thought fitting no matter where it was from. I guess today and since we moved to vinyl we want to define our label direction a bit more and focus on something that makes us special, our domestic music scene but we still have a weak spot for good music that is not local.

The label has started to press vinyl after a strong back catalog of digital. How does it feel to step into vinyl distribution and how has the response been?

(Jónbjörn) It’s great to finally achieve this long term goal, it was our dream from the start to release music physically. It was the perfect timing for us, we built our catalogue up slowly and gained some following. The responses we’ve gotten are dreamlike, we never imagined our first vinyl would sell out this fast.

(Viktor) I think we have received more recognition since we started releasing vinyl and I guess we have stepped our game up a bit.

The latest release LAGAFFE003, sampler VA EP just landed recently. Tell us a little about how this collection came together and what was the overall goal for the record?

(Jónbjörn) In 2014 we did this Tale of Tales sampler with some Icelandic friends and the goal is to bring all new and old friends together and show some sample of their work.

(Viktor) The artists on this record have all previously released with us digitally with an exception from Sune. I think that we have all managed to grow as a label and artists at the same time, so it might have been a little award from us to the artists for wanting to release with us at the time when others wouldn’t (being only digital at the time).

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/lagaffe-tales/sets/lagaffe003-va-tale-of-tales-chapter-02″/]

You’ve described Iceland’s music scene as a ‘sparse community,’ are there any record stores and/or bars that keep this small group going? Which are your favorite?

(Jónbjörn) Reykjavík has some really nice spots! There are a couple of nice small record shops, but for second-hand dance music and some new Icelandic goodies, we would recommend Lucky Records.

For dancing, the first choice would be Kaffibarinn, we have had some crazy nights over there. One of the oldest bars in Reykjavík, an institution. For more clubby vibes we would go to Paloma, a former Viking tourist bar turned into a club.

(Viktor) There are places that are the cornerstones of our scene which have been mentioned.

How often do you all make it to Europe for gigs or just to enjoy and where do you tend to travel on these visits?

(Jónbjörn) There are some ideas of exporting our artists more often to Europe for gigs, and right now some of them are actually living on the mainland. I moved over to Berlin last year and it takes a bit of time to establish in a new city, especially where there is a crazy much happening and everyone is doing something.

(Viktor) I have been to Norway, Sweden and Austria recently with the label (Lagaffe Tales with Felix Leifur & Moff & Tarkin) but it only happens once in a while. It’s relatively expensive to fly from Reykjavik to the mainland of Europe so when you get to go it’s something to look forward to. We would very much like to play more abroad and its one of our set goals for the future. We are aiming towards doing a little euro trip in September celebrating our 5-year anniversary. Does anyone out there want a visit from Lagaffe and the crew? ;)

Who are some current inspirations to your DJing and Production work?

(Jónbjörn and Viktor) Inspirations are coming from all over the place these days. So much great music being produced released and it would be unfair to name only a few but anything from the youtube craze DJ Seinfeld, Ross from Friends, Mood Hut and Vancouver guys like Jesse Bru, French guys; Folamour, Tell and D.KO, Razor n’ Tape, Peckham strong, Moomin, Cristopher Rau and the Hamburg scene. Man, we could go on forever. And we want to give our Icelandic mates a big shout out for all the inspiring times we’ve had together; Moff & Tarkin, Felix Leifur, Áskell, Borg Ltd, Simon Fknhndsm, Intr0beatz.

What can we look forward to from Lagaffe Tales in 2017 and beyond?

(Jonbjorn) For the next vinyl, we signed an EP with an artist that we like a lot these days called Malouane. And there is more cooking that we can’t give out right now ;)

(Viktor) A mix of Icelandic house and stuff from ‘abroad’.
