One of the most important people in my life name is Sue. She is kind, she is warm and ever relaxed. Now I’m almost certain that Australian expat Jad & The doesn’t know her personally, however he’s crafted a record that’s a reminder of all the amazing things she’s done for me.

At Bolting Bits, we’ve always been loyal fans of Jad & The’s productions. Having previously dropped EP’s on classy imprints such as Toy Tonics, FINA Records and his very own Beats Of No Nation, he has now linked up with Julius Steinhoff, owner of Down By The Lake. As release No.4 on the label Jad grabs a spot by the still waters alongside Saile, Ron Blanco and TRP.

Our attention is set firmly on the A1 ‘Two Dancing’, a beautiful ride. Melding a stunning piano scale, steady kick drum, hypnotic hi-hats and a vocal snatch that sounds like my godmother’s name, we have a tune that should cast your mind back to fond memories…whatever they may be? The Aussie has an obvious knack for writing, selecting but a handful of instruments and somehow always stringing them together in harmony. I bet this would go down an absolute treat at a wedding reception for a couple’s first dance. They’d of course have to be lovers of house music but hey aren’t we all.

Hop to it as this one’s a vinyl only release with a sterling Moomin remix of the B2 ‘Archy Krules’.

Smallville sub-label, Fuck Reality, have welcomed back Oslo based producer Frantzvaag to express the “fuck reality” sentiment through four lush cuts of classy Norwegian deep house. Having premiered an understated little groover (Saile – ‘What I Feel’) from the other Smallville offshoot Down By The Lake last week, it’s fair to say we’ve fallen victim to the label’s emotional pull. Hailing from Hamburg, Smallville prides themselves on a coherent yet eclectic aesthetic, manifested in everything from eccentric artwork from illustrator Stefan Marx to memorable sloganeering, and of course the signature sound of shimmering deepness. Naturally, the Fuck Reality releases are no exception: EPs that are quirky and refined all at once.

Fuck Reality 05 is as exceptional and varied as we dreamed it would be, a credit to Frantzvaag who has been increasingly noted in the Oslo scene. Frantzvaags music breathes life into the dancefloor, sanding down the traditional Chicago deep house sound with crush filled samples and lush pads. Deservingly, his debut EP, Fuck Reality 03, yielded support from reputed names like Session Victim, Move D, and Jacques Renault. Something tells us that this EP will do the same.

On the A1, ‘There Is No’ lifts us straight out of mundanity and into a world of melancholic kicks and dreamy vocals. The A2, ‘I Skyene’, is arguably the track of the record. Fittingly, we’re premiering it today. The track has all the components we know and love: warm, downy pads; a groovy bass melody; crisp 808 and vocals draped loosely over the top. But the the contrast between textures ensures that nothing about it feels ‘done before’. With a kick that gets you itching for a boogie, this is the kind of jam that keeps you on the dancefloor in true Fuck Reality style.

On the flip side of the 12”, you’ll find even more vibey goodness. The more subdued but just as club ready ‘Goodbye’ is a perfect testament to the immersive nature of deep house and the groove filled B2, ‘Once Before’, leaves us wishing we could escape to the atmospheric land of Smallville, wherever that may be.

Smallville Record’s label boss Julius Steinhoff started sub-label Down By The Lake as a way to complement a growing party series at Waldsee Freiburg where he’d invite close friends to join him behind the decks. Since its humble beginnings, it has blossomed into a solid outlet for fresh new music. Now, DBTL is gearing up to release their third 12″ and first release of the year with Berlin based producer Saile. ‘Moments In Life,’ his second appearance on Down By The Lake, is a continuation of the understated, nostalgic house music that defined last year’s ‘In The End‘, the label’s inaugural release. Saile’s latest packs a punch. Three classic house cuts and a remix from Smallville mainstay Christopher Rau make for a welcome addition to the Down By The Lake discography.

‘Moments In Life’ closes with “What I Feel,” an understated groover perfect for late night car rides or quiet times spent alone. The culmination of three more energetic songs, “What I Feel” is a reserved affair ripe with classic synth sounds, deep 808 kicks and toms, and dusty percs. OG house with cosmic sensibilities and introspective tones. Music for the sad folk. Go on, send that text to your ex.

Despite his young age, Saile seems to have found his sound, and we’re not complaining. ‘Moments in Life,’ with original drawings and typography from Stefan Marx, is scheduled for release in May 2018. Jump on it before it disappears.
