Make Believe Disco is the newest vinyl-only imprint from Guy and Kris, the Dutch and Danish/Canadian duo behind Sleazy Beats. Originally starting as a blog back in early to mid-2009, Sleazy Beats then quickly transitioned into a record label later that same year, with their first release coming from Eddie C. Fast forward eight years and they’ve gone through two series of ten releases each. The original catalogue was a little bit on the slo-mo/edit tip while the follow-up series and arguably their hottest, the Black Ops series, was geared more toward the dance floor. Their no digital, no repress policy enacted in 2010 has caught them some flack over the years as many fans have struggled to pick up copies. But they’ve stuck to it, ensuring that limited stays limited while unfortunately fetching some ridiculous prices on the second-hand market.

Guy and Kris’ impressive A&R skills paired with some impeccable timing have helped both their label and certain artists blossom. One of those artists is Junktion (soundcloud) aka Hans Peeman, one half of Fouk and co-founder of Outplay. A widely popular follow-up to his “Monologues” EP, “The Great Unknown“, which was released on the Black Ops imprint, sold out in a matter of a couple of days (if not less than that) and this happened around the time that the hype around both Junktion and Sleazy Beats was conceivably at an all-time high. With this surefire recipe for success, why not repeat the process?

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/junktion-in-blue-forests”/]

Today we’re extremely excited to bring you Peeman’s latest and the second release on newly minted Make Believe Disco with the premiere of the A1 and title track “In Blue Forests”. Hans manages to evoke his signature sound while breathing some fresh air into this project. The crisp drums we’ve come to expect are certainly present here with catchy bass guitar licks making regular appearances. However, the aptly titled track brings forth visions of rain forests and tropical climates utilizing afro-latin percussion rhythms and arpeggiated marimba-like instruments, a step away from the funky and more soulful samples we’re accustomed to hearing from the Dutchman. Exemplary synth work rounds out this euphonious cocktail, creating tension in all the right moments and taking a back seat to the groove when needed.

Needless to say, this EP will sell like hotcakes so you better get your pre-orders in as soon as possible or risk being disappointed!

FINA Records was established in 2011, originally as an offshoot for Ralph Lawson’s 2020 Vision label. Three years into that tenure, the partnership ended with both parties looking to focus on their own imprints full time. The identity that FINA has crafted for itself is one that’s hard to put a finger on, as their releases encompass a fairly wide range. Not pigeonholing themselves into one style they do manage to have a common factor connecting their music and that is strong melodic undertones. Whether it’s a fairly downtempo tune or a more straightforward house jam, there is always an inherently musical nature to their output.

Saine (soundcloud), a Helsinki-based producer who has somehow managed to fly (somewhat) under the radar for years, even with his consistent quality, is a perfect fit for the aforementioned unquantifiable character that FINA has established for itself. His loose and smokey, organic sound filled with obscure samples has landed him releases on some fantastic record labels, such as an EP on the now discontinued Sleazy Beats Black Ops and an excellent mini-LP on Fools & Fables Recordings. The Finnish musician’s latest is called “Mint EP” and it features three stellar cuts.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-saine-technique”/]

Today’s premiere and the A1 ‘Technique‘ doesn’t stray from what we’ve come to expect from Saine. Muted keys set the tone as a looped guitar rhythm and understated bass form the foundation of the groove. Crisp yet slightly hazy drums are in support with shaker patterns fluttering throughout. A second guitar sample plays call and response with a held vocal note while a male voice croons an unintelligible phrase. Sampled rhodes-like bleeps doodle throughout the first half when the vocals aren’t present, taking centre stage during the mini-break. The various instruments and samples are elegantly filtered in and out while oscillating atmospheric noises help create a sense of motion. The Finnish sampling maestro is once again able to bring forth another must-have record and the good news is that it will be released in just a couple of days!

Bristol-based producer Admin (soundcloud) has rapidly cultivated a discography of next-level, eccentric sample-based productions over the past few years. The sources for these productions are largely sweet, dusty rare grooves from jazz, soul and disco cuts. After some early work with Futureboogie, Admin had a bomb run in 2015 and 2016, dropping highly acclaimed EPs on Boogie Cafe, Sleazy Beats, Omena Record and Kolour LTD in addition to contributing two different tracks to Bristol label Banoffee Pies‘ highly sought-after Limited Series. Perhaps the most unique aspect of his run is the implicit patience and quality control involved. Admin does not just crank out whatver’s clever, but rather maintains a steady but selective release pace. 2017 seeks to continue this run for the Bristol man, and he’s started things off with a soon-to be-released remix of Chezz’ “Bossa” for Boogie Cafe and has another dope remix in the pocket for a certain Secret label (I can’t say much more than that).

Aside from production, Admin is also a regular figure in the Bristol scene via his party Slix Disco, which has played host to such names as Marcel Vogel, Mister Saturday Night, The Revenge, Mark Grusane and Eddie C.

Anyway, we’re forgoing the interview component this time around with this man of semi-mystery. But before we dive into the mix, a bit about it from Admin himself:

“. . . The mix was in fact for my girlfriend who had just returned from a long shift at the Children’s Hospital on NYE. [I] wanted something that had energy, but not too hectic to begin with. Something that could build excitement but also kind of be retrospective of the year and forward thinking of the new year. It was never really intended to be a guestmix or anything, but I really enjoyed the mix even if [it’s] a bit rough around the edges. [It’s] got a nice charm to it. Also, apologies if [you were] expecting a ‘house’ mix.”

Musically, the session is a lovely melange of crackling soul, disco and boogie records. A silky, fun ride that’s sure to brighten any mood. Here you have it:

Admin, un nom qu’Adam Wickens a rapidement tiré, telle une révélation, de ses heures passées devant son écran d’ordinateur. Figure incontournable de Bristol, Admin est un “must-see” dans la région sud ouest du royaume de sa majesté. Côté production, il se démarque aussi avec un sampling parfaitement maîtrisé qu’il s’agisse à la fois d’un bongo, de loop disco, de jazz ou d’une house groovy.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/omena-records/admin-spirit-boogie-forthcoming-omltd004″ width=”100%” height=”150″ iframe=”true” /]

INTERVIEW

Hi and thank you for being with us! Could you introduce yourselves and your work up to now?
Hi, we are M.ono & Luvless, we run the label Rose Records and we released some shizzle on labels like Heist, Razor ´n Tape, Sleazy Beats and Tsuba just to mention a few…

You’ve both been present on Rose Records from the start, can you tell us more about the label and how you manage it?
We started Rose Records from scratch in 2011 I guess just with our idealism and a handful of bucks for the first release. Super exciting times back then and still to this day. DIY is still the main driving force and we try to keep it always fun and not business. Some great records will come this year. We used to distribute the records by ourselves but last year we teamed up with Oye Records for all those things after they invited us.

Those first Rose Records compilations have been fetching crazy prices on the resale market, how do you feel about that? Also, are there any represses in the works?
We don´t really care about such things. We appreciate all people loving and playing our records and supporting us. But some of them might have other purposes just as selling high-priced records. Our records are still limited and a repress won´t come anytime soon. We didn´t do that because we wanted to limit a record artificially. We just didn´t have enough money to do more.

What first pushed you guys to collaborate?
We made our apprenticeship together and we both are passionate music lovers from various genres. That´s just more than 15 years ago. Talking about music was just natural. I (Luvless) bought my first record players when i was at the gentle age of 16. Oh man, that´s a long time ago. M.ono was fiddling around with several DAW´s at this point like Reason and I tried to tickle out the most of my old 486 Pentium to get Fruity Loops running. We had the same feeling about music and how it should sound like. Warm and groovy. We also liked the idea to do things together. Years later we were sitting outside a club, talking, had a tipple and decided to start a label.. ha ha that´s it.

What is your process for collaboration? Do you share a studio? How does the magic happen?
When we’re working on our projects it’s just a no-brainer. We just do what we’re up to. We don’t have a certain thing in mind or even don’t know how it should sound in the end. It just comes naturally. It often just starts with a beat one of us created or a sample we both dig and then we’re building a structure around that part. We’re working together and as separate parts when we can’t meet. So sometimes we have two versions of a project and choose one to work on further together. We don’t share a studio. Not yet. Don’t know if that is something for future plans as a creative space to hang out and make music. At the moment we both don’t mind. Our door is always open for each other, so…

What do you try to suggest through your music? What are your goals with it?
It’s easy. We just want to create something we both would like to hear on the dancefloor in different situations and moods. I think that is the main thing in our mind if i would say so.

What is next for you guys? Can we expect new releases?
This year is pretty exciting. We’re gonna put out some bits on labels like the wonderful Kolour Ltd. We’re gonna create a whole EP for them boys over at Houston. Just great. Furthermore new releases are in the line for Razor ‘n Tape. Thanks Aaron and Jason! We also contributed a track for the 10 years Tsuba compilation which will be released some time in the first half of this year. Also working on stuff for Traxx Underground, Fina and O*RSelfs which is a new sublabel of our good friend Filburt. On his label we put out “Never Gonna Leave You” just to mention beside. As you can see we have a full schedule which is just great and we’re really thankful that people are loving what we’re doing so much.

What labels and/or artists do you dream of working with?
We’ve worked with so many great people to this point we’d never dreamed of working with. So there’s no certain artist or label yet. Everyone has their own potential.

How would you define your main musical influences?
We both went through various genres like drum ‘n bass, hiphop, soul and disco. As we’re born in the 80s and raised in the 90s we can’t hide from some pop, as well as we both discovered and experienced the more underground kind of electronic music in the mid 90s.. That was the time when people started organizing illegal parties in warehouses and old bunkers from the war. Amazing times and amazing new music and even a whole new spirit for both of us.

What have been your best gigs to date?
They were all just great as of yet? We experienced a lot of love. Thanks to every promoter who ever invited us and every dancer who ever danced with us. We hope you’re gonna join us in the future.

Any other things that you’d like to talk about?
My mouth is already fuzzy!

What are your last musical discoveries ? Anything that you can’t stop listening to at the moment?
Luvless: At the moment I really dig the album “The Breeze – Cocktails by the Pool”. One of my new discoveries besides so many others. Great tropical beats; a lazy afternoon; two lovers kissing. “Cocktails by the Pool” and I love to listen to a radio station called “Illinois Street Lounge” while having a good coffee and browsing books about records and art-stuff…

M.ono: I listen to a lot of Hip-Hop and RnB music from the late 1990s & 2000s mostly when I´m on the way with the tram or my bycicle. Sometimes some pop music from the 80s as well. I´m not an album listener, I love to create playlists and listen to them. And of course I search for new tracks for our dj sets if i have time.
