The underground’s premiere beloved edits label, Razor-N-Tape, turns 50. Fifty Discos Deep. That’s the title of their new compilation and also how many releases Brooklyn’s JKriv and Aaron Dae have managed to put together in just 9 years since starting the label, initially a passion project. Calling on the producers and DJs who helped put and keep them on the map, this 3 x 12″ package is a heavyweight affair.

What’s perhaps even more impressive is that the vast majority of the contributors to the compilation are stateside. Aside from Joey Negro (London, UK) and Dimitri from Brooklyn (Paris, France), the rest are based in the US. Despite the recent fad of, dare I say, uninspired disco edits in scenes around the globe, it’s clear that real disco is alive and well in America and is being pushed by the same heads that have been doing it for years and years.

Today, Bolting Bits has the pleasure to present one of the edits on the compilation ahead of its forthcoming release. Underdog Edits aka Leonard Part Sixx from Chicago digs up another unheralded gem from the late 70’s and gives it the dancefloor treatment. This soulful jam is the recipient of some beefed up disco drums and a 7 minute arrangement that turns it into a dancefloor anthem, guaranteed.

The rest of the edits are hot hot hot, coming from long-time dons such as Joey Negro, Dimitri from Paris, Eli Escobar, Jacques Renault and of course label co-head JKriv. But don’t you dare sleep on the others from up-and-comers such as Detroit’s Peter Croce, California’s Daniel T., New York’s Arsenii and Philly duo Superprince. These guys have all been around but maybe don’t quite have the same name recognition just yet.

The release is not only functional but it’s a collector’s item as well with amazing packaging that showcases the whole RNT catalog and a classic Bill Bernstein photo on the cover. Be sure to get your copy once these land in shops around the world.

Today marks a special moment in Bolting Bits history for us. We are now lucky enough to premiere a track from our very own – Igor Bezuglov! For those that do not know, Igor is one of the major pieces that keep our music blog running behind the scenes. But being a man of many talents, he has been working on his own productions the past few months to deliver us his first tune under his alias Igor B.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-igor-b-ponteio” /]

Titled Ponteio (which means “bridge” in Portuguese), this song is the A-side of Igor’s debut record Águas de Setembro that is set to come out on Peter Croce and Moonlighter’s Detroit imprint Rocksteady Disco later this month. Throughout the piece, Igor utilizes the Brazilian original’s rolling bassline, impromptu instrumentation, and bittersweet vocals to capture what everyone’s feeling this time of year. Although many of us understand that cold months lay ahead, we are also eager to keep the good times going no matter what – and it’s this palpable optimism that makes the song the perfect soundtrack as we transition from summer into autumn across the northern hemisphere.

To get yourself a copy of this record, make sure to pre-order it by clicking here.

After last year’s phenomenal “Standing Still is an Illusion“ release on Rocksteady Disco that brought Blair French (soundcloud) to our attention, he’s continued to impress us. His follow-up release was put out as one half of Cosmic Handshakes with Todd Modes, entitled “In The Mist“, on Going Good Records. A medley of afro, world and experimental influences, the Detroit natives served up some ear candy with serious replay value. Now, he’s back and once again it’s on the Motor City’s budding Rocksteady Disco. Headed by Peter Croce, the label has shined a light on some fantastic talent, the vast majority of which is local. This is impressive, as not too many labels are focusing on homegrown talent these days and, of those that are, very few seem to be as successful.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-blair-french-public-park” /]
“Public Park” is the name of Blair’s next release and it leans heavily towards influences coming from the world’s second largest continent. Combining adept sampling with some of his own instrumentation, the EP is diverse yet coherent. Our premiere today is the A1 and title track. Combining all the right elements, from a groovy bass and jangling percussion to a fluttering flute and a playful sounding balafon, this one is meant straight for the peak hours of the dancefloor. It feels like it’s constantly building, only intensifying our need to get out of our chairs and boogie. It’s safe to say this one is going to be in the record bags of many an afro house lover.

The EP had a limited advance run of 70 test pressings, each custom spray painted by Blair and Peter which has already sold out. Not to fear though, the official release of Public Park is set to come next week and you should be able to get your hands on a copy directly from the label’s Bandcamp.

Peter Croce’s Detroit-based boutique record label and party series Rocksteady Disco is gearing up to release their eight project, this time a various artists compilation including remixes of two tracks from Peter Croce and Topher Horn by Detroit stalwarts LADYMONIX and Pontchartrain, and one from the D.C. legend Sol Power All-Stars. The EP has more of what we’ve come to expect from Rocksteady Disco, eclectic yet cohesive tracks inspired by global soundsystem culture and rooted in house and disco. Dropping in early 2018, the “Remixes, Rarities & VIPs Vol.1” collection pulls together an exciting cast of characters from the Motor City and should be on any heads release watchlist as we break into the new year.

[soundcloud url= “https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/topher-horn-sol-power-all-stars-remix” /]

Stepping up alongside Detroit producers isn’t an easy task, but if someone was going to do it it’d be D.C.’s Marc Meisnere and Rhome Anderson aka Sol Power All-Stars. Over the years he’s churned out numerous top dollar edits, originals, and remixes, many of which have appeared on his own label, Sol Power Sound. Here, they Topher’s original and stripped it of its overt “balearic-ness,” instead replacing it with a rolling afro-house beat and bouncy bass and synth lines. Organic percussion knocks over deep, steady pads and piano riffs before high pitched funk synths take us through the finish line. We’d put this in the understated burner category, a category for tracks that seem unassuming but light up a packed dance-floor. Alternatively, it’s also perfect for home listening. A simple groover that lifts spirits and is easy on the ears. Keep this one in your bag folks, and watch out for the release because the rest of it packs a punch.

Rocksteady Disco (soundcloud) is a Detroit-based boutique record label and party series that was launched in 2014 by Peter Croce. Their aim is to continue the tradition of house and disco in the Motor City while maintaining an eclectic sound that transcends beyond the two aforementioned genres. Jazzy and afro influences are just as likely to be heard in their catalogue as are deep Detroit-inspired chords, staying true to their roots in a modern way. One thing you are sure to find throughout RSD’s releases and their events are funky bass lines and rhythms made to make you dance.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/blair-french-standing-still-is-an-illusion”/]

RSD006, “Standing Still Is An Illusion” comes from Blair French (soundcloud), a producer and DJ who’s been honing his skills for a number of years under his own name and a number of aliases such as Dial.81, BLKSHRK, Cosmic Handshakes and Nois Land. Keeping his releases mainly on labels from his close-knit Detroit community, he’s back this time with a solo EP for Rocksteady Disco. This three track EP features fantastic grooves and percussion throughout with the B sides ‘Ayiba I Yeri O‘ and ‘Pagode Americano‘ sampling no-nonsense Afro and Brazilian numbers meant straight for the dance floor.

Our premiere, the A1 and title track ‘Standing Still Is An Illusion‘ is a bit of a journey at slightly over 9 minutes long but it’s one that you’re going to want to embark on. Featuring Topher Horn, Paul Randolph and Ryan Gimpert, there’s a load of instrumentation on this one from the early jazzy ride groove and deep bass that serves as an intro, to the rhodes chords, guitars and bongo rhythms found later on. Despite a number of change-ups in the arrangement, it still feels like one coherent piece. Subtle adjustments in percussion and a number of different instruments are introduced at regular intervals, giving the impression that the majority of the track was jammed out first and then fine-tuned and re-arranged. If you’re looking for a tune that’s got a little bit of everything – grooves, melodies, percussion and fantastic instrumentation, then you’ve come to the right place.

Pre-order RSD006 here as it hits shelves in early June.
