Flamingo Pier are a New Zealand collective that consists of local DJs Luke Walker, Dominic Jones and Bradley Craig. Having first popped up on the scene roughly 4 years ago with a self-released debut, the lads have recently joined forces with London-based label Soundway Records to come out with their first proper, self-titled record. Consisting of four original tracks, Flamingo Pier have chosen to take us on a journey that’s strongly influenced by the boogie, disco, Afro and classic house that their parties are known for. Slick, rolling disco synths and punchy drum machines are woven in with Afro-centric percussion and dreamy vocal chants, for an exotic disco-boogie experience from start to finish.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-flamingo-pier-find-your-way-earthboogie-remix” /]

If that were not enough to get you excited about this release, we have a remix of one of their tracks “Find Your Way” that comes from the talented duo Earthboogie, who consistently come out with music that’s dedicated to all things “intergalactic, cosmic, tribal and terrestrial.” Compared to the original, this rendition is more full-bodied – adding in a great deal of texture that ranges from welcomed horned melodies to alluring vocals that fall directly in-line with the mood I believe Flamingo Pier set out to achieve. This isn’t as much a remix as it’s an indirect extension of the band itself. My hat goes off to Earthboogie for taking an already great track and helping it reach even higher heights. Bravo!

This EP is being released to coincide with Flamingo Pier’s Festival in Waiheke, New Zealand on February 9th 2019, which is already sold out. If you’ve missed your chance to attend, this is quite the consolation prize. You can pre-order the record here!

New Zealander Julien Dyne is a multi-instrumentalist with a long and impressive history of collaborative, live and solo musicianship. He is best known for his solo work as BBE and having worked with the likes of Theo Parrish, Steve Spacek, Andreya Triana and Lord Echo. In addition to this – having remixed the likes of Marcel Vogel, Ghostwave and Leroy Burgess (alongside Frank Booker) – Dyne has also accumulated a number of accolades over the course of a 10-year career including but not exclusive to being hotly tipped by both Moodymann and Gilles Peterson.

Dyne’s new project for 2018 is the 11-track LP, Teal, on Miles Cleret’s legendary Soundway Records. The album, a masterpiece of future soul and afro-percussive house, is more uptempo than what we’re used to from Julien, and it’s a welcome change of pace. The project practically oozes soul while demonstrating Julien’s skills as a multi-instrumentalist and visionary producer. Included are collaborations with fellow New Zealander Mara TK, long term band-mate Ladi6, Fat Freddy’s Drop’s trumpeter Toby Laing, Australian vocalist Tim Guy, and Jazz luminaries Jonathan Crayford and Jon Bell.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-julien-dyne-youyou” /]
While it’s hard not to discuss each track in excruciating detail, we’ll take a look at the second track on the album, “YouYou.” Julien’s synth-work is on display from the jump, as big reverbed hits ring out before the percs start knockin’. This track is a certified vibe-bringer, and if we stripped most of the instrumental away, the bassline alone would cause a ruckus. Playful arpeggios and Julien’s masterful use of delay add so much movement to the track, making it impossible for listeners to get bored. Most impressively, “YouYou” feels like an organized live jam. What more could you want?

As a whole, this is a body of work fit for the dancefloor and for home listening. Double threats like this shouldn’t be missed, so grab the double vinyl and add it to your already impressive collection of tunes. For the digital folks, the album is available to purchase/stream from all major online retailers and streaming outlets.
Lithuania, perhaps known better for its tall, exported NBA players than for their thriving underground scene, is where we’re travelling to today. Say No More is a fresh label out of the capital, Vilnius, perhaps looking to change our perspective and shine a fresh light on the Baltic state, and we at Bolting Bits are happy to be of help. With only one former release under their belt thus far from young Londoner Sukha, they’ve decided to traverse across the globe to New Zealand for their second outing.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-azure-a-flicker-of-love” /]
SNM002 comes from Azure, another fresh-faced talent and founder of Crooked Lidz, who you may also better know as one half of duo 2XM. The four track “Allies” EP is a bewitching little journey with plenty of textured soundscapes to lose yourself in. Our premiere and the A1, ‘A Flicker of Love‘, starts us off with vocals repeating “ecstasy” and deep pads reminiscent of some early 2000’s trance numbers. Luckily this is a more modern take on the sound and the track develops with a lovely little bloopy lead, cosmic atmospheres and a much slower rhythm than its older counterparts.

The rest of the EP is no slouch either and features some of Azure’s Crooked Lidz crew. From his partner in 2XM, Benjamin Murray, to friend and collaborator Kills and the most recent to release on the label, Caramel Smooth Heaven. All of their different influences are equally felt yet the one constant, Azure, helps keep the EP stay firmly glued together.

We’re curious to see where Say No More will be looking for talent next but in the meantime you can grab this EP straight from the label’s Bandcamp.

The Nail Shop is a relatively new London based record label established in 2016 but only releasing their first two EPs in 2017. As their name implies, cheeky references to manis and pedis are regularly found but the real focus is on the music. Showcasing impeccable A&R skills from the get-go, they’ve managed to release polished sounding records from Speed Boat (one half of New Zealand duo, Sandboards) and Maniqin, both solo debuts for the artists in question. Although their sound is as of yet hard to pin down, it’s clear that there is a heavy focus on the dancefloor, with both records undeniably causing some ruckus and already being championed by some leading influencers.

[soundcloud url= “https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/2XM-2am” /]
The Nail Shop’s third EP is set to hit shelves soon and once again comes from New Zealand. 2XM (soundcloud) are Liam and Benjamin Murray or 2 x Murrays. Although this is not quite a debut release for them, they’re still relatively unknown with a number of self-released titles and a mellow sounding track out on Dream Raw Recordings, evidence of the label’s knack for spotting talent early on display once again. The “Rendezvous” EP, named after arguably the most club-worthy track of the bunch, is a mix of mellow sounds and dancefloor friendly cuts with jazzy influences aplenty. Our premiere and the A1, 2AM leans towards the latter, although still easy to listen to we can easily see it dealing some damage with footwork friendly rhythms, anticipatory buildups and breaks, mesmerizing keys and a perfectly groovy bassline.

If the Nail Shop isn’t on your radar yet you should consider keeping a close eye on them as well as 2XM and don’t forget to pre-order this release which is set to be out February 23rd.
