Ambient synths, a deep bassline and trickling plucks form ‘The Prelude’, this is the introduction to an LP oozing character, told by Allergy Season and Heist artist John Barera & Beats In Space affiliate Brian Abelson. After being eased in by the opener, title track ‘The Arc’ picks up speed with hypnotic arpeggios and doom-spelling harmonies, working in unison to build up tension throughout its five minute runtime.

This is before toucan sounds’ resident vocalist Brandon Markell Holmes enters with a soft-sung ballad, Barera and Abelson’s intricate instrumentation forming a subtle and effective backbone to Holmes’ unrivalled voice. This is a varied album, touching on groove-laden dance tracks like ‘I Was There’ and ‘I Am Free’, to the sluggish trip of ‘I Believe’. Summarising the LP perfectly, ‘The Return’ closes out the release with the infectious strum of a bass guitar and carefully designed layers of melody that, much like the rest of the full-length, speaks endlessly to the imagination.

Once dubbed one of the “New York techno scene’s hardest working DJs” by Resident Advisor, John Barera has honed his craft via his Cross Street label, as well as appearances on labels such as Soul Clap and Dolly. His style ranges from techno, electro through to house and acid, and has seen him grace the halls of influential international clubs like Panorama Bar, Fabric, Razzmatazz, and many more.

Brian Abelson is responsible for co-producing and writing records on labels like Beats in Space, Sinderlyn and more, all while holding down a residency at New York’s celebrated Bossa Nova Civic Club. After a recent glimpse at collaboration via their 2022 ‘Myrtle Ave Wetlands’ on Sorry Records, NYC scene stalwarts Abelson and Barera now team up for an LP rooted in left-field house music, combining their wealth of influences and experience to deliver a quality vinyl album full of unique artistic expression.

Nicepeople have released some serious players in the past couple of years, from established legends like Orlando Voorn and Boo Williams through to newer talents like Khadeeja Grace and Soulvibe Inc. Now it’s the turn of Giuseppe Scarano and Gourmet De Funk to lay down the deep house mission in a classic New York style – just listen to ‘Gotta Move (GFD Party Stompin’ Mix)’ and you’ll know what we mean.

The sampling alone nods to Big Apple legend Pal Joey, while the sax-licked groove has a MAW vibe to die for. The quality keeps up across this record, leaving you with some forthright garage house pieced together with knowledge and flai.

New York City-based House duo musclecars have been steadily building a formidable reputation within underground dance circles in their hometown. With the creation of their Coloring Lessons Party in 2018 (which is now a label), they sought to reinvigorate their city’s dance culture and foster a greater sense of community by highlighting and incorporating styles and genres largely associated with their Black ancestry. Shelter, (Building It Still) is the latest solo EP for the duo on their newly minted label.

B-side track, “We Go Home Together”, is a gorgeous, patient, amorphous cut of experimental Jazz-House. Its blend of emotive jazz arrangements with a more propulsive club-ready House beat illustrates a meticulous, yet free-form approach to music-making that the duo thrives at. The track starts with a thumping bass and shifty percussion before an ethereal synth wash wraps it in a more gentle veneer. These club-leaning tendencies turn out to be mostly a red herring, as they’re kept mostly at bay throughout the song’s 7-and-a-half-minute runtime. Once the sax emerges, it’s clear musclecars has committed to their own unique brand of soulful, genre-agnostic House.

As the track hits the halfway point, a piano-line suited for a classic Disco House cut signals yet another new avenue the duo seems keen on exploring. Despite their restless spirit, they never feel as if they’re trying to push too hard in one direction, ultimately allowing the track’s multifarious parts to playfully and organically interact with one another. Here, the duo prove just what naturals they are at concocting such ineffably blissful, melodically soothing dance music.

Interdimentrix on Fokus Global is a five track EP from Brooklyn-based Old Terra. The combination of chaotic breaks, ghostly pads, steady kicks, and hooky baselines will have you scratching your head, as well nodding it.

Eerie atmospheres of In Parallel, Dim Ages and Subdimension are contrasted by the energy brought by Griff Spex on Get You Open, a track that would sound equally at home in the club or coming out of a car stereo at 2 AM somewhere in Crown Heights. The release wraps with the suspenseful and purifying vibes of Iverson Loop.

Following an incredible release earlier this year on Lillerne Tapes Alien D is back. This time on fifteen.pm with 3 more kaleidoscopic journeys to drift away to. Today’s premiere features the track Frog Shirt from the forthcoming Jazzin’ the Cube EP. The track opens with bouncy kick while airy and shimmering synths float above. As the square bass enters the mix, it begins pulsing along as a frog’s neck does while meditating on a lily pad. There are tons of bits of sound to get lost in on Frog Shirt. Alien D illustrates again an ability to make tunes that are both contemplative and groovy – calming to the soul yet makes you want to get up bop around too. It’s this sense of duality and playfulness that makes us stoked for each upcoming release from Alien D.

Jazzin the Cube is out this Friday 3/27 via fifteen.pm. Hop on over to their website to purchase the EP and also check out their incredible library of interactive music videos.

New York’s releisure is back. Hot off their recent reissue of Intergalactic Faerie Funk, they’ve lined up another name that should be familiar to our readers, Keita Sano. The Japanese producer has made a name for himself over the past 5 years or so and his tracks have been played the world over. With Afro influences and chunky basslines, there’s a good chance you’ve heard one of his club friendly jams recently.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-keita-sano-paradise” /]

Today we’re premiering the A2 on his releisure release, entitled “Paradise”. Using crunchy percussion and effective looping, Keita Sano has managed to create another dancefloor bomb. Subtle acid lines creep in and the strings create real tension, perfect for those dancers waiting for the beat to drop. Basically a DJs weapon, we expect this one to cause some major damage.

New York staple, Let’s Play House, seemingly releases a record every week. And every single one, is pretty much fire. How do they do it? Must be something in the water out here in Brooklyn. For their 19th white label release, LPH gears up to drop a couple of disco house smashers. There’s even some acid in there to boot! This is pure summertime fun ladies and gentleman. A taste of rave culture with a touch of disco fervor.[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/unknown-artist-liwando-jacques-renault-bk-club-version/” /]
LPH label head Jacques Renault is a seasoned producer that’s been known to strike a spark or two on the dancefloor. His “BK Club Version” of Liwando is exactly that, a fire starter. The original version feels much more disco, and while Jacques retains many of its best elements, he quiets the congas and adds more of a house touch to his remix. In the best of ways, the club version is heavier, giving proper shine to the joyous M1 riff that never seems to end. This tune is a real floor finisher. Try not to feel f***in’ amazing when you listen to this. I’m writing this at 9:30am and I’m too fired up. I’d karate kick my way through a weak fence right now. Watch out Brooklyn, Jacques let me outta my cage this morning. Let’s Play House white label numero 19 is available now via all trusty online retailers. If you’re in NYC, you’ll definitely find it in local shops. Get out there and grab these guaranteed fire starters.

Razor-N-Tape, the saviours of modern disco. Cut in Brooklyn, New York, they have perhaps been the most consistent label of the last 6 years. JKriv and Aaron Dae are the duo to thank behind the outstanding label, their hard work has seen them shape the new disco sounds running deep through the underground veins of New York City and beyond. They boast an extremely impressive repertoire of artists; Tiger & Woods, Jacques Renault, Dimitri from Paris, Late Nite Tuff Guy, Eli Escobar and disco don’s COEO are just a few of the wealth of talent who have released on the label. You’ll struggle to find a label with a better discography.

Since his debut EP back in 2015 he has been going from strength-to-strength including an impressive release on Let’s Play House. His latest adventure with Razor-N-Tape is an African-infused disco EP, 4 perfectly produced stompers to get any basement or festival rocking! Today we’re delighted to premiere one of the best tracks on the release “All Day”. NYC-based label and party series HOMAGE is set to drop their third release, this time with the help of London-based DJ and producer JVTXA (soundcloud). As a budding artist still finding their place amidst the low-fi renaissance that’s currently sweeping scenes around the globe, JVXTA’s “Rudy’s Disc” EP plays with time and space — honouring a romantic past while keeping its edges sharp and forward thinking.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/jvxta-state-of-nature” /]
Today we premiere the EP’s closing track, a seven-minute slow burner titled, State of Nature. From the opening bar onward JVXTA dims the lights and sets the mood, inviting trance by way of his tightly interwoven percussion, crackling with a dust that’s distinctly Detroit in nature. Floating up from below, a synthesized string brings levity, opening the mix and making room for quick piano cuts and distorted hoots and hollers, each panning right to left before fleeing towards an alluring unknown. As the track unfolds layer by layer, the groove revealed harkens back to an unmistakably 90’s Detroit root, proudly displayed in it’s mechanical hi-hats and soaring acapella. All the while, JVXTA grounds us in the here, now, and beyond with stunning synthesized sound design. Glimmering keys and thick pads rest leisurely in the middle of the mix, evoking the image of a future yet unheard. A perfect way to lay us down to rest at the end of an otherwise floor-filling EP.Brawn, Rudy’s Disc, and When We Kiss are all currently streaming on HOMAGE’s soundcloud page as we round out the new record with this premiere. House heads who know their history are sure to flock towards this modern take on a classic sound, as should anyone enjoying the collective 90’s nostalgia currently gracing dance floors both small and large.
Bolting Bits is, at its core, a collective of individuals, artists, DJs, producers, promoters, label heads and much more from locations all around the globe. Since so many of our contributors reside in various locales where electronic music is thriving, we felt that it would be appropriate to bring our readers a list of events in the places where our team is present. Furthermore, this list is personally curated, as these are events that we ourselves may be attending or would be attending if we were given the chance. Below you’ll find a list of parties that we think you should be going to in places such as our hometown Montreal and beyond.Check back monthly for a list of events in your hometown and if you don’t see your city here, feel free to submit an event at the bottom of this page and we’ll gladly add it to our list!
