Today’s premiere comes from the illustrious producer and Detroit Native Javonntte. The 9th release on nyc label fifteen.pm, City Life is a lush and soulful journey through feel good Detroit House from the long time producer.

Javonntte’s productions date back to the mid-90s, when he ran the label NRE and released tracks by himself, Blake Baxter, and Eddie Fowles, among others. In 2016, he shifted his focus back to the studio with his release of “The Musical Stylings of Javonntte” on Kai Alcé’s NDATL records. A gifted singer and multi-instrumentalist, his compositions are marked by sophisticated harmonies, melodic bass lines, and his own uncanny vocal work. City Life blossomed over a few weeks of pronounced soulfulness and positivity in the producer’s life. In his words, the four tracks are about “paying attention to beauty; it’s something that inspires me about the city; the people, everything, getting up in the morning; food…. basically they’re feel good tracks, you know lovers, or if you’re smoking weed, or whatever you’re doing, it’s something that makes you feel good.”

Today’s premiere track S.H.M. (or Swing House Madness) takes off with a groove of shuffling hi hats and thumping kicks. The track evokes the feeling of a night drive through the city as the neon lights bend and refract to the swung rhythms. The way Javonntte freaks the synth, walks the bassline, and indulges in warm keys will have you opting for the long road home just to feel the groove 1 (or 10) more times.

Visit fifteen.pm to pick up the EP today and check out the catalog of interactive music videos for other artists on their roster as well.

Hugo Mari is a name that should be new to your ears, but is not one to forget. Today we present a single from Hugo Mari’s debut record, which is to be released on the mighty Heist Recordings on 3rd December 2018. The five-track EP has three originals from the main man Hugo and two remixes on the B-side by none other than NDATL label head Kai Alcé. Previously Hugo had a string of releases as ‘Books’ on a variety of underground labels, including XVI, OMENA and his own label High Praise. Much to our satisfaction, despite the name change, Hugo is still making groovy soulful house jams. The whole EP is first class, and sits right at home on Detroit Swindles Heist Recordings. The track we have the pleasure of presenting is titled ‘Feel Ur Senses’.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-hugo-mari-feel-ur-senses” /]
The aptly titled B1, which has a repeated vocal chanting the mantra that is the title, is an emotive track that indeed tickles all the right senses. The drawn out chords have an almost sensual appeal which, when paired with the understated bassline, give you a warm and fuzzy feeling. The track continues to evolve with various elements being introduced throughout, such as different types of percussion and a rising lead synth that pairs perfectly with the established motif. Overall it is an expertly arranged piece and a big standout in the EP and as a debut for Hugo’s new alias.

The North London based Hugo is a busy man, between his time in the studio he’s promoting a night and running a label. Luckily he had some time to answer some questions about his release, production method and his future plans.

Tell us about your E.P and how it feels to release on the mighty Heist?
It feels great! I’ve been buying their records since the first release & they’ve put me on to some great artists so it’s an honour to join the ranks

How did you get your music in front of Detroit Swindle?
Maarten sent me a message on my Facebook page asking if I’d be interested in doing a release.

I didn’t ask how they’d heard my music but the Omena and High Praise releases were getting some spins from DJs so I imagine they heard one of those.

Let’s talk production, what equipment was used to make the EP?
I use Native Instruments Machine a lot. That’s where I do all my drums and often sampling and fx etc. Aside from that, hardware wise on that release, I used a Moog Sub37 for a couple of sounds but that’s it really. There’s a fair bit of gear in my studio but I don’t always use it, the Rhodes and other synth sounds are VST’s!

Under your previous alias you’ve been making moves and bubbling away with gigs in London for a fair few years. Patience and persistence seems to be key in this game, would you agree?
DJing has always been my job so I see it kind of separately to what I’m doing now with the production side. I do agree though and the main thing is that you love the process and put the time in. I’ve never worried much about anything other than trying to make good music!

You run a label with a close friend, what is High Praise about and can we expect a release anytime soon?
High Praise is a record label and party run by me & my good friend & manager Josh (Rogue & Josh). Focusing on high energy, soulful tracks for the dance floor. Yes! The first track from HP03 was premiered yesterday.

That release is set to drop mid December and it’s fire! Two excellent & very original edits from London broken beat mainstays EVM128 & James Rudie aka. Rude & Mean. We have HP04 and HP05 lined up for next year with two very exciting artists and then I’ll probably do 06 myself!

Future plans, what is happening 2019?
I’ve got a release coming I think in February on a Japanese label that I love called Soundofspeed. Right now I’m working on a release for another dream label of mine which, this time a London based one! Then I guess I’ll try to put out another release or two in the second half of 2019 but who knows – I haven’t really thought that far ahead!

A few hours before his gig with us at Le Bleury, Patrice Scott kindly answer a few questions from our teammate Oliver.

Hi Patrice Scott, how are you doing? It’s been almost a year now since the release of your first album, Euphonium, which we really enjoyed. What have you been up to musically since then?
I am doing well. Since the release of Euphonium I have been in the studio writing music, as always, working on various upcoming projects.

The record is at once cosmic, deep, and meditative, but still maintains dance floor functionality. Was your approach to Euphonium different to that of your EP’s?
Yes, the approach was different. I wanted to tell a story. Not just release some tracks. I wanted the album to have a chronological order.

Would you say you find creative inspiration primarily in electronic music, or in other outlets?
My inspiration comes from all kinds of music as well as other things. I can be in the car driving and see a building and get inspired. Inspiration comes from many outlets if you are a true artist.

You’ve been DJ’ing for over 20 years now. How have your tastes and DJ sets changed over the years?
When I play a set I always try to take people on a journey. That is why I ask for three hours or more. That has always been and will never change. As far as taste, I always try to play music that represents me and how I feel which is deep, emotional (to a certain extent) and soulful.

You’ve obviously amassed a large record collection during that time. How much new music do you purchase, and is it primarily vinyl, digital, or a balance of the two?
I don’t buy a lot of new music because I don’t find a lot of new stuff these days that really excites me. My purchases are mainly old stuff with a few new things from time to time and mostly vinyl.

Any specific producers or labels on the scene that have been particularly grabbing you recently?
I like Kai Alce and what he is doing with his label NDATL.

What is your studio set-up like? Any favourite pieces of gear?
My studio set up is analog and digital gear. They all are my favs.

Detroit’s reputation as a cultural hotbed of musical styles of all sorts has given the city an almost mythological status to non-residents. Would you say the city has changed recently, especially due to the recent increase in house and techno’s popularity?
The city has not changed. It is still the same. Talented and inspiring artist continue to emerge from Detroit.

Sistrum has deservedly established a great reputation since its inception. Any advice for aspiring label-owners?
My only advice is to try and stand out some kind of way because today’s market is flooded with labels. There are too many labels and you can easily get lost in the shuffle no matter how good your music is.

Patrice Scott + TAZZ, it’s tonight at Le Bleury bar à vinyle. See you there.
