Nerang Recordings celebrates its fifth trip around the sun with the second ‘Freaky Friends’ compilation. The six-track compilation features a well-rounded cast of producers, some of whom are marking their return to the label, along with Cologne’s Turk Turkelton, who makes their first appearance on the imprint. Nerang Recordings head honcho DJ Whipr Snipr pulls out all the stops with this excellently curated compilation.

Since its inception in 2016, the Berlin-via-Australia imprint has featured releases by the likes of Interplanetary Criminal, DJ Swagger, Subjoi, Cassettes for Kids and Low Tape, amongst others.

Kicking off the release is DJ Swagger’s ‘Hoticewater’ with its shimmering, ethereal breakbeat feel. Russian electro wizard Low Tape marks his return to the label with ‘So Delicious’, a mood-inducing electro bomb that the producer is known for creating. Rounding off the A-side is Nørus, alongside label head DJ Whipr Snipr, with ‘Molecular Collision’, an acid-tinged electro jam that picks up the tempo.

The B-side maintains the pace from the get-go with Ole Mic Odd’s ‘In The House’, a track that harnesses 80’s futurism with its use of robotic vocal lines and electrifying arps. Next up is ‘Stop Talking Boy’ by Nasty King Kurl, a track that makes great use of hard hitting drums and commanding percussion. Cologne’s Turk Turkelton finishes off the compilation with the track ‘Offenbachs Father’, another electro-leaning track with a razor-sharp drum workout.

Freaky Friends Volume 2 drops February 3, 2021.

Bruise, the new duo consisting of British underground upstart Sona Vabos and 90’s UK House stalwart Diesel (of X-Press 2 fame), are on a mission with their sprawling, ecstatic debut, Presentation EP. Despite occupying different niches and career points in the ever-shifting landscape of underground UK electronic music, these two clearly share an affinity in their approach to music-making; no-punches-pulled, unadulterated, classic-House indebted dance-floor igniters.

Case-in-point: the first track off the B-side of Presentation, “Grand Hi.” After the explosive, choir-vocals-infused A-side opener, “Jagged Angel,” and the more subdued, yet pummeling dub-techno of follow-up, “Dark Sun”, “Grand Hi’s” opening disco piano chords feel like a warm ray of sunlight bursting through the grimy clouds. What’s so remarkable about this track is how it incorporates many of the elements so commonly found in early-90s Detroit or Chicago House, and yet makes it into something other than just pure revisionism, something wholly exciting and expansive. The key here lies in the simplicity of the structure and the attention paid to each arrangement. As the piano undergirds the whole track, Bruise seamlessly introduce more and more elements, including, most notably, a Nile Rodgers-esque guitar line, swelling orchestral strings, and, of course, those crisp hi-hats that simply beg dancers to clap along while being swept away amongst the rushes of euphoria.

With this track, the duo seems to have tapped into the essence of what makes house music so timeless. There’s not a single detail that feels out of place here, yet there is no fussiness or overwrought tinkering either. This speaks to the kinetic chemistry of the collaboration itself and the meeting of two minds on the same tireless, party-starting wavelength.

How did this group come about? Who approached who first?
Christian: I’ve known Darren for a number of yearshaving first met whilst working at PRS for Music. We quickly bonded over a shared affection of classic Detroit records and weird electronica and I eventually plucked up the courage to play Darren some demos, then things slowly morphed from there into a collaboration and voila Bruise!

Darren: Bruise came in to be being as an organic development through our appreciation of house and techno. We both work at PRS for Music and would often meet up at work and after work playing projects that we were currently working on. Can’t remember who originally initiated the partnership but it was about a couple of years ago now.

For Darren, what was it about Christian’s music or approach that really spoke to you and made you realize you must collaborate?
Darren: The thing I liked about Christians music was predominantly his approach to arrangement and melody. I really liked his work ethic and attention to detail. My main focus/limitation is drum programming and basic grooves. We both use Maschine so it seemed like the perfect hook up considering our love of Chicago House and Detroit Techno.

For Christian, do you see Darren as a kind of role model for your own career? What about his work or career do you find most inspiring?
Christian: Totally. Xpress-2 are proper house legends and with Ballistic Brothers and Darren’s own productions as Yellow Sox, I certainly see a role model in his ability to straddle different genres whilst always keeping thingsfocused on the dance floor. Darren’s also a phenomenal crate digger, always unearthing some weird and wonderful undiscovered gem to bring to the studio to fire up the creativity.

Talk a bit about your respective methods for making music. How do they differ? How are they similar?
Christian: My role and focus is on the writing, productionand the more technical elements with Darren steering the ship, making sure we’re going in the right direction and drawing on his crate digging chops! I always like to start with a blank slate for every session, so I never know where a track will end up and hopefully that approach comes across in what I think is a pretty varied selection of tracks on the EP.

Darren: My method of working is straight forward. I tend to only program beats or use samples, simply as I can’t play keys. I quite like being limited by options which results in having to be more creative. I used to use an MPC3000 but now do everything through Maschine which Christian also uses. Christian is more the technical practitioner as he has his own studio. He’s also, even though he won’t admit it, a great keyboard player so he’s definitely on the musical side and has great range with ideas and melodies and chord sequences. It seems to be a perfect match.

What about the label, Meda Fury, speaks to your own ethos as DJs and artists?
Darren: Everything about the Meda Fury label is in line with our outlook and take on house music. Also we’re fans of the label so to be approached by the head Nick Williams to release an EP was really thrilling. We love the label’svision and the consistent quality release after release. We played our first Bruise DJ set at Five Miles in London just before lockdown for a Meda Fury label showcase and from Nick to Eliphino to Silvestre the quality of music, range of styles and bpm really demonstrated the spirit and essence of the label.

Christian: For me, Meda Fury simply puts out some really fucking cool music. From the deep Takuya Matsumoto cutsto gems like Silvestre’s ‘Life’s Good’. I love how Nick supports an eclectic selection of both established and up and coming producers, so it is an absolute honor for us to be part of the Fury Family.

The Lisbon-based No, She Doesn’t is more than just a label, it’s a movement. An open-minded outlook on life has led the collective to take pride in representing values such as equality and freedom, not forgetting to have fun along the way. Their nonchalant take on house has already won many fans around the world, while the names of the crew like DJ Spielberg, DJ Unsure or DJ Legwarmer speak volumes on how serious they take themselves.

It is the Full On EP from the latter that we’ll be taking a closer look today, which the debut release from the up-and-coming producer. With the usual sample-heavy approach, the Portuguese label aficionado has delivered four smashing cuts, just in time to drench the dancefloors this summer. Taking influences from disco and RnB, masterfully layering them and adding a touch of nostalgia, DJ Legwarmer comes up with a winning formula and the EP title seems ever more fitting.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-dj-legwarmer-emotionbehaviour” /]

Opening with ‘Quandary’, an untamed belt of rhythm activity steeped in lush disco fragments, the EP follows with the title track ‘Full On’, atomized with an addictive groove and unexpected tricks. On the flip side, we find a dreamy cut of exotica on ‘Emotion/Behaviour’, before ‘Mar De Nuvens’, the final piece where DJ Legwarmer demonstrates his instinctive feel for emotive and catchy samples that we won’t get tired of. Between self-absorption and euphoria, Full On is a must have, anytime, anywhere.

Cultivating a staunch following via his online channels, this elusive cat named DJ Swagger is usually all about adrenaline. His debut record ‘Greatest Hits’ was characterised by wailing cop sirens and crackling gunfire to give you some indication.

Taking a slightly calmer route, the swagman returns with his ’Faces Whatsoever’ EP via Thirty Year Records. Still a young man, he’s already achieved plenty, with a stack of originals previously released on imprints such as Natural Sciences, Who’s Susan and E-Beamz.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-dj-swagger-vegan-bordbistro-ft-vector-dancer” /]
Experimenting in the land of dub, the opening track ’The Sent’ is a meditative roll. Toying with shuttling percussion and finger clicks, the producer loops together a clump of soothing dark sound. One to shut your eyes and float away too…

Up next comes the cheekily titled ‘Vegan Bordbistro’ (ft. Vector Dancer), interpret it as you may. Heading to someplace devoid of gravity, Swagger and V.D meld harsh drum tones and spacey pads, creating a tune to help warm the floor. There’s a beautiful plateau on this plant-based breaker, one to steady the ship for what’s probably a big evening.

Closing the curtains is a doorway to the great outdoors. ‘What A Relief A Track With A Field Recording’ is built around what appear to be snippets of crickets chirping. Toss in whistles, squashed percussion and bongos and we’ve got ourselves a mellow dance in fresh air.

Explore a new avenue from DJ Swagger on ‘Faces Whatsoever’, only 300 copies will be pressed so don’t dilly dally!

After the stomper that was the ‘Guardian of Forever’ EP, Detroit legend Rick Wade returns to bastion of lofi house ‘Shall Not Fade’ with another four sweet and soulful deep house cuts on his new ‘Passion Play’ Ep.

B1’s Inner Most, brings the darkness of 6am club workouts straight to your ears. Trippy 909s and swelling string pads evolve into beautiful rhodes chords layered over a smooth baseline. Wade comes in with a lovely bit of piano and string work that lifts the track into the realms of the deepest ecstasy. The track is dripping with moody atmosphere and that signature Detroit sound.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-rick-wade-inner-most” /]
The rest of the EP also captures that classic Detroit sound with A1’s title track ‘Passion Play’ bringing an uplifting chord run across some bumping drums and deft vocal work. A2 feels like the darker side of the title track, with ‘Oh Yeah’ using similar vocal, drum and harmonic elements to craft a more introspective and melancholic atmosphere.

B2’s Zero Ningen is the EP biggest departure, bringing disco congas and a chopped Japanese vocal to create a psychedelic house number, with a gentle lo-fi piano melody holding the track down. If J Dilla made house instead of Hip Hop, lived in Japan, and enjoyed the recreational use of assorted hallucinogens, maybe he’d make something that sounds a little like this.

Another great EP from the masterful Rick Wade, proving once again why Shall Not Fade is one of the strongest labels in circulation. The Passion Play EP is out digitally and on Wax July 6th.

For starters, they have a taste for explosively rugged house and techno laden with a wistfulness that never betrays the humans behind the machine (both proverbial and literal). With their fourth and latest outing from German-based producer–and possible time traveler–Jurchen, they continue to expand their palette while staying true to their overall vision. Bolting Bits is showcasing the A2 from the EP titled “Space Adventures”, and from the name alone, it’s clear we won’t be earthbound for long.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-jurchen-is-it-so-unsafe” /]
From the opening moments of ‘Is It So Unsafe’, we’re teleported to another realm, coming face to face with an extraterrestrial presence. Adventuring synth melodies and airy kicks help to establish a fictional and effective urgency as the journey unfolds. There’s a very evocative quality to the percussion and keys as they splash and careen into one another, conjuring both colorful vibrancy and noir-like contrast. Minor chords end up as counterpoints to the chaotic undercurrent, fracturing the track through an emotional prism as the song reaches its apex.

The debut was released in March of this year with a profile that just keeps rising and rising; merging modern dance structure with aural and emotional motifs from decades prior. It’s clear from this stunning first statement that Jurchen has created a truly special portal to an otherworldly plain. Hopefully whatever we encounter out there in the great unknown is equally welcoming…Already in stores.

Few artists today are more responsible for the recent resurgence of lo-fi house as a genre in dance music than Harrison Webber, better known as Harrison BDP. His instant classics such as “Decompression” and “It’s Foggy Outside,” along with the work of others, have helped lay down the foundation for a sound that’s low on frills but high on emotion through its superb utilization of classic techniques and poignant vocal sampling. It’s a formula that has shown itself to be well-appreciated by house-heads alike, earning his songs millions of plays on youtube channels around the globe in a relatively short amount of time.

In his latest release titled “Confusion Of Sound,” Mr. BDP fully attempts to explore the outer reaches of this genre by constructing an EP that contains two extremes. The A-side of the record lands on the soothing end of the spectrum, designed with the intent of relaxing the listener into a stable trance that’s marked by lush synth melodies and playful percussion. On the other hand, the B-side seems to be more tuned for the dancefloor, taking listeners on a cosmic journey of euphoric acid-house.

His song “The Flow” happens to fall on the A-side, and fans of Harrison BDP will instantly recognize it as the work of the Cardiff producer. From the length of the song (coming in at about 10 minutes) to the expertly selected quotes used to complement the track’s celestial feel, this tune embodies everything we’ve come to know Harrison BDP as at this early point in his young career. “The Flow” will surely fit right in with his already star-studded discography and help the producer win the ears of more music lovers in 2018.
