Moscow producer and DJ, Lay-Far is a dab hand at creating those instant classics with a global following that would agree. Always bringing the right energy to every party, space, mix or occasion, we have come to depend on the electronic music maestro for bouncy garage, 80s disco, classic jungle, soul, funk, house music floorfillers and just about everything in between. Today we are super excited to premiere the A1 of his latest EP, ‘Seasons Change’. A 4-part collection blending genres and flavours fit for any musical palette. In that Lay-Far way, this EP has something for everyone.

Sampling raw dub vocals, jungle beats and upbeat summer house, “All Massive” is instant sunshine for any quarantine/lockdown/isolation; it’s the perfect time to recall words of faith from the Russian native: “limitation is the mother of invention”.

Part of the Local Talk family and with releases on Brooklyn’s Razor n Tape, Leng, Atjazz and BBE (just to name a few), this release comes off Tokyo label, Eureka! who started working with Local Talk back in 2014. Lay-Far has no doubt been on their radar for a while now making this a perfect pairing for their first release of 2020.

‘Seasons Change’ incorporates a plethora of sounds both past a present, each track bringing in a new spell cast by the studio veteran. Beautifully mixed jungle, house, Brazilian sounds on the A side, with pure ambient drum and bass nostalgia on the flip. Pre-order here.

Be sure to lock into the In Beat-Ween Show on Russia’s Silver Rain Radio for your soulful fix from Lay-Far.

Stay safe out there!

Five years have now passed since Boogie Café Records was established as an outlet for soul-flecked dance floor jams. The Bristol-based label has grown exponentially in that time, with a succession of highly regarded releases attracting a swathe of higher profile artists to the roster.

The latest is Russian heavyweight Alexander Lay-Far, a producer whose blends of deep house, disco, boogie, soul, jazz and broken beat have appeared on labels including Local Talk, Atjazz, City Fly, Lazy Days, Leng and the In-Beat-Ween Music imprint he established in 2015.

The Moscow-based producer’s first outing on Boogie Café is entitled “Re-Imagine Yourself”; it seems a fitting name, because across the four sample-heavy tracks Lay-Far brilliantly joins the dots between disparate sounds and styles whilst retaining his trademark warmth and soul.

For this EP, Lay Far’s just explained his process behind this exclusive video: “It’s pure 90’s nostalgia right here and a tribute to the halcyon days! I made the video using “Music” (Music Creation) for Sony Playstation 1 – that’s the very program I first started my sound experiments with back in 1998 – 1999. 20 years after I feel like it’s high time to go back to the roots and pay homage to the era! ”

Russian producer Lay-Far has had quite the year to say the least. Self-described as someone who enjoys, “locking [himself] in the studio and watching the time pass by very quickly,” the In-Beat-Ween Music boss has managed to put out four EPs, a slew of remixes, and his third studio album in the past 12 months. However, if you thought the Moscow Maverick was done, you’d be wrong.
Acting as a cherry on top of his recent success, Lay-Far has teamed up with the likes of cinematographer Vitaly Crabov to bring his passion to life by producing a music video for his track “Decentralized Spiritual Autonomy” (taken from 2018’s War is Over). Throughout the video, one will see dancer Kristy Kasianenko in an abandoned warehouse rocking the freshest Nike apparel as she self-contemplates through the art of dance – freely moving from room to room, but never quite escaping the premises. In its final scene, Lay-Far makes a brief cameo as he sits directly in front of the screen, staring out into the lense as the video ends.

https://youtu.be/4bL_ztNErOkVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Lay-Far – Decentralized Spiritual Autonomy (Official Video) (https://youtu.be/4bL_ztNErOk)

Short and sweet, Lay-Far gives his audience a lot of room to decide the piece’s overall message. After all, coming to your own conclusions might be the whole point of it at the end of the day.

Hailing from Moscow Lay-Far is a production maestro that can do anything-electronic music, from super secret disco weapons to dance floor worthy deep house. He’s released on the likes of Razor N Tape, Local Talk, Leng and Wah Wah 45’s. Lay-Far has just released his long awaited third studio album – War is Over which gained support from some of the best DJ’s in the game, including: Gilles Peterson, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Soul Clap, Kraak & Smaak, Osunlade, Alexander Nut, Tensnake and so many more. Check the album over on bandcamp.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/mixed-by-lay-far” /]
Lay-Far describes these workings as: deeply personal, honest, emotional and uncompromising. We now have the absolute pleasure and delight to chat a bit with Lay-Far about his roots, influences and creative process while taking in his new volume of our mixed by series.

INTERVIEW

Let’s take it back and start. Please can you tell us when and where you first connected with dance music?
Hey guys, that’s a very long story, but I’ll keep it short. Got started collecting music in 1996 with Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Moby, Orbital, The Future Sound of London and stuff like that and got deeper and deeper after that – discovering more obscure / underground music, different music cultures and getting to know the roots of it all. From 1999 I was actively involved in the local breaking (break-dancing) scene, which was a real eye-opener for me – I got so much from it intellectually, physically, mentally, spiritually.

What is the electronic music scene like in Moscow? Is this where you first broke out onto the DJ scene?
Love Moscow! It’s a very vibrant place. I mean it has been for a long time, but now we have artists known globally for their contribution to the music culture!
Moscow is the city where it all started for me professionally and I’m very thankful for all the challenges and opportunities it has been offering me. It’s keeping you motivated and active all the time.

Do you find yourself playing lots of your own music whilst DJing?
These days I tend to play more and more of my own stuff – original tunes, remixes, edits… I mean every time you are out there – you showcase your own unique style, taste, attitude, cultural vision, represent who you really are, entertaining the people and making sure they really enjoy themselves! What better way to express it all than to play the music that you actually made, especially when people expect you to ;-)

You have released lots of outstanding original music; in 2018 alone I count one album, four EP’s and remixes for the likes of Joey Negro, Lovebirds and Razor-n-Tape records. Firstly, how do you find the time? And please can you describe your very efficient creative process?

(“War Is Over” Album – In-Beat-Ween Music, Solitary High Social Club – City 2 City, Star 2 Star EP, Be The Change – In-Beat-Ween Music, Never Good Enough You – In-Beat-Ween Music, Even More Secret Weapons on G.A.M.M., remixes)

There is no real secret. Just do what you really feel and love and the rest will fall into place! My method is locking myself in the studio and watching the time pass by very quickly. I’m getting excited by trying various things out and experimenting with the sound and music approaches alone or with fellow musicians. The fun bit – the moment when you find the fresh idea – is what motivates me to come back for more!

Our favourite track from “War Is Over” Album is “The Pressure – The Release” – the one you produced together with with Recloose. You collaborate a lot, to name a few artists: Stee Downes, Jesse Futerman, Phil Gerus, Peter Simpson, Ashley Beedle and Riddim Research Lab. Are these friends you’ve made over your career? And do you work together in person or rather work remotely?
What I love about working with other people is the synergy! When you lock together in a certain groove, music idea – the writing process becomes so natural and fluent. The music just writes itself! There is no forcing of ideas – just a pure expression and registration of that moment in the form of the actually played music. But for that to happen you and your fellow musicians have to be kindred spirits. Music is the form of communication, right?

As for the actual working process – it can very – depending on the location of your friends, really. If possible we work “tete-a-tete” in the studio – if not – internet makes it easy as well, but then this process is a bit stretched in time and involves more revisions, afterthoughts.

You are also known for your remix work. Can you tell us what is different about approaching a remix compared to some original music? Do you find you can still connect emotionally with the music when completing a remix?
The approach is the same! I get a kick from a certain music idea, feeling, groove, sound, texture and develop it naturally just going with the flow. As for the emotional connectivity – I never do remixes of tracks which I don’t like originally, no matter what conditions are!

What does the future hold for Lay-Far?
For the rest of this year I’m concentrating mainly on touring globally with my new album “War Is Over”. Some more remixes will be released this year, but I have many exciting and versatile projects in the pipeline for 2019. So stay tuned for more info soon! ;-)

Finally please tell us how and where you recorded the mix.
I recorded it at home using my Technics turntables, CDJs and a Urei 1601 mixer.

Lay-Far is back with “Be The Change (feat. Pete Simpson)”, a soul infused second single from his upcoming third album War is Over out later this year. The single will be released on Lay-Far’s own label In-Beat-Ween on April 6th and features an additional b-side as well as an alternative mix by Kid Sublime and an acoustic version with dbnn. With an uptempo breakbeat the track builds with a shimmering swirl before the grooving bassline drops in as the first key element. Pete Simpson not only provides the lead vocals but also is credited as a co-writer and performed the bass parts as well. Dreamy synth chords glide around the bassline and drum beats as an additional piano and vocal loops are introduced to add tension in the ascension to the first verse. Simpson’s vocals are soulful and inspiring, with the chorus playing off of the famous Ghandi quote, “Be the change you want to see in this world.”

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/lay-far-be-the-change-feat-pete-simpson” /]

“Be The Change” certainly plays upon the modern funk styles we have seen emerge over the past few years from producers around the globe. Losing a lot of the grit and warmth of past disco styles, this track is crisp and clean, with the drum breaks sitting particularly well within the mix. This helps to compliment the vocals as they are not only pop oriented but political as well. The message is both simple and timely, transmitting a powerful and traditional idea by way of an uplifting disco groove.

“Be The Change (feat. Pete Simpson)” is out on April 6th on In-Beat-Ween Records.

As house music in 2017 continues to mutate, fracture, and spread across the globe, Russia remains a hotbed of simultaneous innovation and reverence. Based in Moscow, Alexander Lay-Far (soundcloud) represents a growing faction of producers and DJs tapping into the wealth of dance music connecting dots from jazz, dub, funk, and everything in between from, quite literally, around the world. A&Ring the newest release from In-Beat-Ween Music, Lay-Far brings together geographically disparate, yet sonically coherent artists to create “Footwork House Jams #1”. Footwork House Jams started in 2010 as a small late night community, influenced by sound and visual aesthetics of 90’s house parties in New York and Chicago. Upon a first rinse, there’s no question Lay-Far nailed the local party feel filled with loose and seemingly off-the-cuff rhythms.

The A-side does not mess around as expected; kicking off with “Church Chords” by Karizma, a cacophony of cowbells and stuttering snares glide effortlessly under repeating organ stabs. It sways a bit like something out of a late 90’s uk-garage hit, but is so stark and structurally current that there’s no question it’s creator has an eye on both the past and the future. “Check Da Discotheque” by Nubian Mindz similarly mines conventions of Dance music’s yesteryear while simultaneously separating himself from the pack. Cut-up vocals and a jacking bassline recall Todd Edward’s revolutionary work, while toms, kicks, and hats run rampant throughout the low end.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-intr0beatz-feat-lay-far-that-dub”/]

Byron the Aquarius‘ syncopated stomper, “Nights in Jakarta” launches the flip-side of this comp with vigor. A spiking melody snaps atop a combo of pumping low-end and breaks that would not feel out of place in the middle of a James Brown performance. Continuing the theme of this collective and release, its the melding of old and new here that’s executed so effectively.

Bolting Bits premiere, “That DUB (Tape Mix)”, comes from intr0beatz featuring Lay-Far himself. The track wriggles and shakes as it builds steadily, utilizing sour organ chords akin to those championed so heavily from the rubble of dubstep. Right as the rocket that is “That DUB” seems to break through the atmosphere, it takes a nosedive into the Mariana Trench—the high-end cuts out abruptly, leaving only the most warehouse-ready pulses and tightly cut vocals that ripple through water. Footwork House Jams #1 resolves with a spellbinding workout from Kid Sublime and Han Litz. “Wings of Love”. It’s tough to really describe the dazzling flutework and piano chops on display here; woodwinds and keys dance across the funk-indebted percussion and arpeggiating synths as freely as a flock of birds swirling over itself in the sky. “Wings of Love” is the final, shining example of the fruitful melding of seemingly disconnected times and culture that Lay-Far and the Footwork House Jams collective represent so effortlessly.

Despite its frigid temperature, Moscow has still been able to churn out some seriously hot releases in the past few years. A perfect example of that is none other than Lay-Far, a favourite of ours here at Bolting Bits. With two LPs under his belt, including the recent ‘How I Communicate’ on Local Talk, and an array of EPs on labels such as Soundofspeed and In-Beat-Ween Music, Lay-Far shows no signs of slowing down and his production chops continue to improve on his addictive blend of deep house, disco, funk et al. Back in 2014, he released the 3 track vinyl-only “Long Titles EP” on Amp-Art Recordings (UK) to favourable response. So favourable, in fact, that one of its tracks ended up being stolen and released in South Africa under another artist’s name – this led Lay-Far to the decision to re-release the album digitally, with a bonus track, on In-Beat-Ween Music, quite literally renamed:

“Long Titles EP, Which was Produced in 2012, Signed in 2013, Released on Limited vinyl In 2014 and a Track From which was Stolen in SA in 2016”.

We are delighted to exclusively premiere ‘Bonus Track: Entitled From Head to Toe’ here at Bolting Bits. Starting out as a dubbed out disco , From Head to Toe soon ascends into a funked-out jacking stomper, with a meaty kick, quirky percs, and smooth transitions, marinated in classy jazz samples. Originally produced in 2012, the track finally gets to see the light of day, and enlightened DJs should be sure to cop this release as soon as possible! Stream-able below, we’re sure you’ll be as energized as we were when we heard it for the first time.
