Londoner Joe Milli joins the Faux Poly family this summer with his instantly classic EP Manifest Leisure. As a long-standing staple of Peckham’s music scene, Joe has held down residencies at Tola, Balamii, Rinse FM, and now SWU.FM, along with hosting a packed out in-store party at Planet Wax earlier this year.

Joe’s sound is based upon Techno and UK Funky through and through. His radio shows and DJ sets reflect an eclectic taste, branching confidently from these genres, perfectly encapsulated on this release.

Together at the end of 2023, all four tracks rely heavily on the Vermona Mono Lancet bass synth along with steady drum-tool like rhythm, always shining a light on the delivery: super playable club music that isn’t overworked. Spanning Techno & Bass, there’s a proper UK Funky groove embedded throughout the whole EP.

London outfit Kassian continue their broadly-evolving yet highly detailed journey through and beyond sound towards something ever more expansive. Their second release for !K7 Records comes in the wake of creating a dedicated hardware-forward studio in a Northeast London container complex, where they have the freedom to interlink their machines. This renewed focus brought them to Supercontinent EP, named for the ancient geological era when Africa and South America were joined as Pangea.

A reformulation of rhythmic ideas inspired by South African Amapiano and South American Baile Funk governs the two hemispheres of the record. The pair examine and deconstruct dancefloor material, eschewing 4/4 for interlocking shaker patterns, searing acid lines, cracking breakbeats, and vocal samples in Zulu and Brazil Portuguese.

The immediacy of the restless rhythm and bass-led funk of “Yena” forms a sweet spot where double-time and half-time can coexist. The word Yena translates to ‘he / him / man’, and the punchy male vocal loop punctuates the track’s deep swing, enhanced by amapiano log drums sped-up to a glassy pitch.

“Yami” (‘mine’ in Zulu) is a slinkier proposition which sheds prominent percussion in favour of a weighty, fluid, acid-informed bassline undulating from below. Contrasted against its jutting female vocals and sharp synth pads, the track cultivates dancefloor anticipation, accented by skittering percussion and time-stretched acid disintegration.

An ascending percussive riff marks the arrival of “Pulgueiro Baile”, followed closely by break beats and the nostalgia of distinctly British acid electro. While pulguero translates as ‘flea market’ there is nothing random to be found; it is an intentionally future-forward retelling of a vintage sound, replete with a mind-melt breakdown of rave pads.

A dubbed-out groove dominates the bottom-heavy “Sistema Baile”, established by a leading Roland System 1 synth line. It is a groovy, steady roller that chugs and propels and chugs with head-nod hypnotism through an intricately minimalistic approach.

Order now.

Continuing the vein of transforming their creative process, label bosses Kassian release their 4th EP on their imprint Faux Poly. ‘Intimate Empty Club Room’ delivers rich layered soundscapes full of experimental harmonics and an unwillingness to be tied down to any specific club genre.

The EP explores different senses of space, tone and reverberation, which are characterised in the name of each track; Shimmer, Hollow & Fade. The names themselves reflect the aesthetic of the rooms that the tracks were designed for.

Kassian are about to embark on their debut US tour in October after playing Love International and Madruga Festival over the summer.

Within the transformations of their meticulous processes, London duo Kassian become a vessel for alchemy: filtering and distilling scores of stems, samples and layers until something richer and more complex than the sum of its parts emerges. Uncomfortable in any solitary genre, and at the midpoint of somewhere unexpected and uncharted, the pair describe their sound as “almost techno.”

Since their debut release in 2018, Kassian have drifted leftwards into heavier, more abstract territory, harnessing their individual skills for working in the small pockets and painting the whole cloth of the canvas. In their first outing for !K7, Phase Two EP, the Roland System 1 synth is the throughline as they painstakingly piece together sketches, turning high hats into kick drums, capturing the resonance of percussion and drift further into each other’s heavy-hitting sonic realms.

“X-303” recontextualises the sci-fi inspiration of its name, forging a new style of interstellar acid. A driving kick drum holds steady through a track which oscillates between contrasts: from eerie, suspenseful pads and distorted string sounds, to a minimalistic groove accented with double-time drums and mechanistic pulses. “Tabla” reduces a distinct latin rhythm down to its essence, and is propelled by a thick and distended bass loop. Its hypnotic groove combines the human and the virtual with a glitching vocal sample and the juddering of strummed guitar strings, highlighted by the percussive hits of its namesake instrument.

The pair characterise “Prelude” as “a Frankenstein kind of monster.” Constructed around a radio sample of a legend of the scene, it is a sleek and incremental gradation of shades, with micro layers from their palette of sounds rising and falling, blending and twisting with no obvious lead or bass. Repurposing the same drums as “X-303”, the EP’s final track “Patterns” was inspired by Kassian’s earliest incarnations of live performances, and it unashamedly captures the peaks of communal moments, rounding out the EP with an epic take on deep and techy house.

Coming in direct from Hackney, we have the honor of hosting British duo Kassian for our next Mixed By. They’ve put together an insanely groovy mix of soulful, jazzy house for us and it’s just what you need to soundtrack your next dance. The duo comprised of Warren Cummings and Joe Danvers have been putting out belters on labels such as Phonica White, Shall Not Fade and Heist Recordings since 2019. Kassian’s career got off to a flying start, with the title track from their debut EP ‘The Premise’ garnering a track of the year nomination by Gilles Peterson. They’ve since put out several stellar EP’s with this years ‘Crush’ on Shall Not Fade being the most recent.

Kassian have been very busy in the studio, they’ve also done a thumping remix of Nebraska’s ‘Dip and Flip’ on the latest edition of Heist’s notorious Round Up series. ‘The Round Up Part VII’ (released on March 12th) is packed with slamming remixes from a huge cast of big house names. We’re glad to have them today for our new MIXED BY series.

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to talk to us! Can you tell us what your inspirations were for this mix?
Recently we’ve been really into the heavier side of club music like techno, bass and UKG, so for this mix we thought we’d get back to our roots and work the mix around the new Heist Round Up record, focusing more on jazz influenced house and some London bruk.

‘Crush’ is your first EP on Shall Not Fade and it’s absolutely unreal! What made you decide to choose them for the release?
Kieran had been messaging us for a little while saying he wanted to do something together, the label is really blowing up at the moment and we really admire the variety across all the sub-labels. Plus their illustrator James is super talented so we always knew the record would look great.

‘The Premise’ is still one of my favourite tracks, but I’ve loved everything you guys have put out since. Do you feel like your sound has changed or evolved from your first release till now?
Absolutely, we’re moving away from organic sounds and jazz samples and focussing more on the hardware in our studio now. We’re taking our sound a little heavier and moving closer to techno and bass this year. We still love our old records and we’ll keep spinning that stuff if the club calls for it, but we can never sit on one style for too long. Changing it up as we progress keeps it interesting for us and hopefully our listeners too.

What was your recording process for ‘Crush’? Do you have any instruments, hardware or software that you always fall back on?
Crush was actually made in the middle of the first big UK lockdown, so we were totally remote for maybe 2-3 months. All of the sketches for the record were made back then, and we were passing the projects back and forth and chipping away at them on our own. It was only after the lockdown eased that we could get back into the studio and wrap them up together. Because we were at home most of the sounds on Crush are from VST synths, samples and NI Maschine. In terms of stuff we always fall back on, Maschine is the backbone of almost all of our drum tracks, and we have a small collection of VST settings we’ve tweaked over the years that we use for giving our tracks a recognisable atmosphere, things like soft pads and low arps that just roll in the background.

How did you both get into music, and then electronic music? What were your musical upbringings like?
Joe: I grew up around music, my Dad has been in bands throughout his whole life, so our house always had instruments around, I’ve been playing bass guitar since I was about 11, and also drums through most of my teens. When I was a kid it was all Beatles, Pink Floyd and other classics, until I left for uni and started getting into electronic music.

Warren: Same as Joe for me, music was always a big part of my home life growing up and even now a lot of my friends are due to random musical connections. My parents would always be playing and my dad had his own soundsystem that we would set up in clubs around London, so a large part of my childhood was spent fiddling with sound equipment and testing speakers. From then on it was something that I knew would stay with me for life.

How have you guys handled the quarantine this past year? Did you have to change the way you worked or your creative process in any way?
Yep, we’ve got a lot better at working remotely now, everything in our studio is synchronized to both of our laptops so either of us can just pull up a project and tweak it from home whenever we like. It’s actually been really great because we can just focus on getting great ideas together in the studio then work on the small details at home in our own time, and then get back into the studio to do the mixdown at the end.

Tell us about your relationship with Heist?
Heist will always be a very special label for us, they helped us launch Kassian and we were so lucky to have such experienced guys helping us promote a vinyl record as our very first release. Dam Swindle have been a huge inspiration to both of us over the years and they have definitely influenced our productions a lot. Even though our sound is changing and we move on from the label, we’ll always be proud to be part of the Heist family. Big shout to Maarten & Lars!

You’ve remixed Nebraska’s Dip and Flip on Heist’s The Round Up Part VII. Tell us about that?
We were so happy that we got a chance to remix Nebraska for this year’s Round Up, we love his original EP and the samples are incredible. For the remix we wanted to touch on the heavier sounds that we’re into right now but also keep the remix true to Heist. The original sample has so much energy and really sounds like it’s bursting into life. We’ve chopped up the sample to emphasise the energy and put our own super loose drum track underneath, and added the acid line at the end so that the track transitions from a sample led track into something heavier, just like the direction we’re taking with our own sound.

What’s coming up this year for you guys? Do you have any big plans after restrictions begin to ease?
We do! We’ve got a few more records lined up that should land just as we come out of lockdown, one more with Shall Not Fade and the second release on our ‘Versions’ disco series. We’re also launching our own label later this year which will be a change in sound from our previous releases, watch this space! Of course we have a few festivals and shows lined up but we don’t want to talk about those too much just yet in case we jinx them…

It’s that time of the year again when Heist Recordings deliver their annual frenzy of collaborations from another years worth of label releases, all wrapped up in one package – ’The Round Up’. You’ll hear Crackazat taking on the breezy horns of Alma Negra’s standout ‘Dakar Disco’ and Dam Swindle’s re-interpretation of Teleseen’s ‘Dekalb’ full of live drums, wonky arps, and raw synth stabs, plus other classy reworks by Detroit legends Scan 7, Kassian, Nebraska and Pitto.

The concept of ‘The Round Up’ is each artist that released on Heist in 2020 gets to remix another artist from that year. There’s the feel-good festival vibes on Crackazats remix of ‘Dakar Disco’ and the rolling tech goodness of Kassian’s rework of Nebraska’s bonkers ‘Dip & Flip’. Pitto takes us on an excursion into deep dubbed out house with his rework of Kassian’s ‘8th Movement’ and Nebraska goes all UK house meets US garage meets Christopher Walken’s cowbell solo on his remix of ‘Move out the way’ by Dam Swindle. The label heads bring on house stabs with an atmospheric and pumping remix of Teleseen’s ‘Dekalb’, while the latter goes for a more worldly feel with his remix of ‘Discko’ by Pitto. There’s the superb Detroit house approach from Scan 7 with their remix of Crackazat’s ‘Class one’, plus Alma Negra who add vocal and synth layers to the gospel house killer cut ‘All Of Me’ by Scan 7.

Next up for London via Detroit artist Demi Riquísmo is an exciting six-track remix EP on his Semi Delicious record label. Demi, who has been receiving praise by many in the underground dance music scene, lined up a head-turning collection of reworks from Kassian, T.Jacques, Baby Rollen, Black Loops, Manual Darquart and Jive Talk. This isn’t your average remix EP, as each artist completely reinvents his work in their own unique way.

The EP opens straight away with a dancefloor destroying remix of ’54 Reasons’ by Kassian. A steady, up-tempo and commanding drum pattern set the stage from the get go, with a warm bassline being introduced around the minute mark. The vocal recalls dancefloor days with its intuitive charm, worthy of a chant in the club. Perfectly crafted synth-work guides the listener throughout the track but makes it to the spotlight when the kick and bass cease, just before guiding the listener back to the familiarity of the drum groove. All in all, the track has that classic Kassian take on house that we have grown fond of over the years.

London’s very own groove master Demi Riquisimo brings forth 005 for his relentlessly class ‘Semi Delicious’ label. A various artist compilation with, alongside an absolute weapon from Demi himself, superb disco-ready rhythms from Jive Talk, Kassian and Vhyce.

Alongside the rolling drum kit samples, Demi layers cosmic lasers, 70’s clavinet and bucket loads of rolling basslines with this Afro re-edit! Vhyce’s disco chops meet retro 80’s synth arpeggios and huge filtering drops that will bring a slice of retro euphoria to your record bag.

On the flip, ‘Midnight District Line’ from Kassian takes a ride through the city with a rolling filter house workout. No unnecessary bits in this stripped back club weapon. Funky Rhodes and bright NY style 909 loops make this one primed for any time of the night. Jive Talk bring ‘UK Gary’, a reedit teeming with expression from its live jazz drum sampling and sassy female vocals. Developing through the seven minutes with classic house sounds including THAT 90’s Korg organ sound!
