Broken District was launched in 2018 by Jus Jam, Momla and Antwan. The label explores alternative styles, blending influences of house, jazz, hip-hop, funk and soul. With seven releases under their belt, this very slick imprint is supported often by the likes of Worldwide FM, XLR8R and Phonica.

On this new offering Broken District brings us ‘90s Anxiety’, a maxi EP by label co-founder Jus Jam, who takes us on a deep exploration into his hazy musical world. His music is often described as dreamy and contemplative, with sharp beats and smooth bassline, ‘90s Anxiety’ does not disappoint. Heavily inspired by nineties underground club culture, the EP travels through UK garage to dreamy hip-hop, from early electro to new jack swing.

On opener ‘Daydream’ and its B-side sister ‘Ryoji’s Dream’, the producer delivers two dreamy compositions crafted with the forward thinking hip-hop head in mind, touching on trap, seinen manga soundtracks and David Lynch’s surreal cinema. ‘Neopolis Sound’ is a subtle homage to early electro and breakbeat, old sci-fi movies and 90s video games. ‘Higher Sense’ is a modern and dreamy vision of breaks and jungle with elements of jazz. Title track

‘90s Anxiety’ takes a contemporary angle on new jack swing mixed with elements of house and funk slap bass. ‘Wide’ goes full on two-step with its steamy atmosphere, syncopated beat and powerful sub.

This collection of tracks is Jus Jam doing what he does best, mixing many forms to create something completely new and visionary.

It’s rare to find a ‘Various Artists’ compilation that glues together from start to finish as well as Broken District’s debut, five-track record, set for vinyl release on April 27 before its May 11 digital release.

Finding blanket-terms to shortly categorise music isn’t easy at the best of times, but the heads of the new label, Jus Jam, Momla and Antwan, have done it for us. They said they want its output to fuse their tastes, which include jazz, house, hip-hop, funk, soul and more experimental genres. And each one of these elements, at some stage of the record, rise up strongly and contribute something very authentic.

So the whole record is definitely worth a listen, but we suggest you pay particular attention to our premiere, Jeppe Wolmer’s Normal Position.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-jeppe-wolmer-normal-position” /]

Fresh out of Copenhagen, this nearly seven-minute house rhythm is lightly pieced together by jazz and funk building blocks, like deep, groovy chord stabs and a looped guitar riff. The B1 on the record, it’s a great example of the EP’s multi-generic flavour.

Other tracks on the record come from Bordeaux’s Momla, Berlin-based Marian Tone, Jus Jam and Yepes & Plae Casi, the latter of whom step out of their hip-hop norm to produce arguably the track of the record.

Originating from Paris in 2016 Real D, Jus Jam (soundcloud), Kerstone, Robin Riccitiello and creative director morningradient decided to join forces to launch this amazing vinyl label – Khasia Hills. Khasia Hills are a very unique label in many different ways, inspired by Meghalaya in Eastern India, this amazing geographical location is home to the Khasia Hills itself, which feature some of the most awe-inspiring “majestous palm trees in the world”. A breath of fresh air in a cramped music industry, on each and every vinyl you receive a special hand drawn palm tree by the remarkable Cambodian/French painter Mr. Syphol Moeur with label co-founder morningradient designing the sleeve. It is easy to see that a significant amount of thought and effort has went into the fine details of this label which also comes across in the material they release.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-jus-jam-late-night” /]

Release number three for Khasia Hills comes in the form of ‘Monsoon’ [KH003] by one of the labels founders, Jus Jam. This 4-track EP is due to be released next month and features one track that we are extremely excited to premiere, track 2 on the A side ‘Late Night’. Heavenly sounds and blissed-out pads are blended together to produce a pure haze of house lushness something that Jus Jam is well known for. This record starts out with some divine piano keys in the company of always enjoyable bongos, perhaps inspired from the South Asian theme of the label. Taking its time to gently build-up to the emotional percussive groove it is, the varied vocals and horns add great depth and width to this track. Make sure to grab yourself a copy upon release here.

Often times, there comes a point in an artist’s career when they decide that a full, unencumbered vision of theirs cannot be fully realized without going all in. So it goes for a group of four like-minded producers who, alongside seasoned art director, m o r n i n g r a d i e n t, have just launched their own record label, Khasia Hills (soundcloud). Movers and shakers Real D., Jam for Real, Kerstone, and Jus Jam name the label after a geographic range located in East India that is known for having “Some of the most majestic palm trees in the world”; within the first few moments of this project, it’s clear Khasia Hills can be depended on for some airy, light-hearted stomps alongside some vivid imagery conjured in the process.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/kerstone-ostone”/]

Premiering the B1 on this record, “Ostone” by relative newcomer Kerstone, kicks off swiftly with nimble and agile hats panning across the mix throughout. Gentle melodies ebb and flow against plucked bells, alongside the gorgeous birdsong gracefully hiding behind the mix; Ostone creates a truly mesmerizing blend of sounds (Kerstone evens deploys various synth wipes that sound like the aural equivalent to lens flare). Though gently rocking back and forth in one place at some points, the track breaks down twice throughout, allowing itself and the listener to measure the meatier portions against some isolated moments and ambiance and bliss.

Ostone serves as the third of 4 tracks, and in conjunction with the full EP, truly helps to summon the rolling green hills and cloudy-yet-clear skies that Khasia Hills is setting out to propagate. Lucky for them, their entire constituency is comprised of talented producers, fully capable of sending their listeners far away from the troubles of everyday life, and into the joy of wandering through a field and forest of their design.
