On Oath’s latest release, the imprint is beyond proud to bring renowned Canadian producer Jesse Bru into the fold, who brings with him a truly barnstorming collection of music that dips deep into the inbetween and brings forth a captivating audial experience like no other……

Jesse Bru remains one of modern dance music’s most intriguing technicians, both from a humanistic and machine driven perspective. His sound is born deeply from 90s sample based approaches, and this fascination has been stretched out and rewritten constantly throughout his releases to great effect. Bru primarily releases music under the guise of House, but to delve deep within his records is to see a much broader perspective, where many genres can be found within the grooves and rhythms. His melodic work, with a particular emphasis on vocal samples as part of melodic exchanges with pianos and synths, is inspiring to say the least, and as a core facet of his work always aims to shift his sound onwards and upwards. There aren’t many styles that aren’t touched upon within his discography, and his journey to date feels very much like an exercise in understanding the liminal spaces that persist between a myriad of genres. Bru always finds new ways to mesmerise, entice and unfurl within his music, joyous yet calculated and unraveling – a distinctly infectious sound that keeps listeners engaged from start to finish. With stellar releases on labels such as Slothboogie, Aterral, Oath’s sub-label Last Year at Marienbad, Blaq Numbers and Happiness Therapy, there’s plenty to delve into and get to know.

‘Sea to Sky’ is Bru’s first LP since 2020’s ‘The Coast’, and there isn’t much ground or in-between spaces which he doesn’t cover over the album’s 13 glorious tracks. Shifting from simmering ambient to pumped up electro, sparkling House cuts through to unravelling downtempo numbers, Bru ensures the listener leaves the experience feeling the totality of his universe.

Side D kicks off with ‘Mnajdra’, which again features Bru’s classic motifs in the art of crafting top quality house music. A hypnotic rhythmic palette sets the stage for the vocals to do their magic, along with pretty, engaging synths which provide a melodic base in which to loose yourself completely. ‘The Abyss’ takes things back into electro territories, and this one has a brooding tone to it – the hum and fizz of the bass synths, razor sharp percussion and filtered vocals make quite an image in the mind.

Aterral records, the imprint of Malaga-born and Berlin-based DJ/Producer, Carlo, is turning two years old. Celebrating a sound that blends deep, life-affirming house, two-step and minimal, a smooth 8-track selection brings to the fore a range of underground dancefloor gems packed full of soul. Bringing seasoned mainstays and newcomers with it, Aterral’s renowned alternative output now takes a turn directly toward the dancefloor with a fresh and wide-ranging fusion of sounds.

Aterral newcomer Austin Ato brings a lo-fi work out on ‘Obsession 3’, as does fellow newbie Denalia with the ultra-minimal ‘Room One’. The collection wouldn’t be complete without the label’s already burgeoning family members…

Jesse Bru, who’s ‘Rainforrest’ EP from earlier this year has been a highlight for so many, delivers early morning warehouse vibes on ‘In the Deep’. Lis Sarroca’s ‘Magic Happenings’ comes correct with its metronomic tempo, Emanuele Barilli brings his throbbing chords on ‘Be Pe Em’ and Nephews stimulates the senses with the smooth warmth of ‘Waves’.

Aterral’s dearest friend Black Loops springs into action with the swinging two-step bounce of ‘Fanacanna’, whilst label boss Carlo.. As the title suggests… Is ‘Just Tripping Lightly.’

Germany based label Blaq Numbers is back with a monster 24 tracks compilation on cassette tape. Probably better known for the superb Interstate release on their sub label Whyte Numbers, the label has a certain taste for putting out mellow yet dancefloor effective deep house joints, qualities that have been shown again in the recent Jesse Bru’s release as well.
However this release brings different flavors to the mix, adding a somewhat crescendo effect to the whole tape. Starting with low-bpm jams ranging between hip-hop instrumentals out of the 90s, funk induced songs and more soulful loopy tracks to slowly make its way up to what the label is best known for: floor-filling house music. Uniting the release is a predisposition for the heavy use of samples with a certain nostalgic feeling. Don’t expect a group of producers trying to reinvent the wheel, instead they blend themselves in the history of different genres, and they do it skillfully.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-e-davd-ekorom” /]

Waiting for us near the end of the tape is the Ekorom track by E Davd. Following his release on Natural Science earlier this year he offers us here a cocktail of saturated drums, a squelching bassline, sci-fi inspired pads and an insane groove sugar coated with dubby delays and a pitched down voice. It’s easily the most “club use only” track of the tape and boy does it move! Get ready to find yourself in a stroboscopic universe with sweating bodies moving left and right as soon as that rollercoaster of a tune drops in a club near you.
We couldn’t be more excited to premiere this laser-shooting piece of four-to-the-floor music and can’t wait to hear it in a late-night dance session. Seriously, it’s all about that bassline.

You can now pre-order the cassette (limited to 100 copies) and the digi on the label’s bandcamp.

It would seem every underground label on its come-up is after the Berlin-based producer and the man’s output is nothing short of impressive. ‘How u really feel‘ rounds out another strong year for the artist whose discography already includes releases on Heart to Heart, Axe on Wax, Piff, and a full-length album on Audio Parallax.

This won’t be the only interesting juxtaposition on the EP as standout track ‘Turn you loose‘ also begins with an unnerving vocal sample — albeit a much longer, darker one before turning into a hard grooving edit-style track that Bru is known for. Whether this works as intended will be left up to the listener.

Dream Raw Recordings, self-proclaimed underground label for all kind of fresh dreamy, hazy, lo-fi, raw house, are gearing up to release a V/A comp of gems from a staggering, 36 artists. Faithful to the motto, “too many good tracks,” DRR decided it’d make sense to organize a digital release full of tunes from artists you may already follow, and a bunch you most likely do not. The collection of tracks is wide ranging, spanning mellow house full of dreamy pads and emotional detuned lo-fi pianos to tape recorded acid jams and jungle.

An immediate standout from the pack, Belfast producer Wallabee’s “Feel” features a dramatic, vintage sounding piano loop that creeps over deep drums and under signature lo-fi hats and snares. Adding more fuel to the fire, a heavily reverbed sample of Timbaland’s famous adlibs on Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody” is the perfect complement to an already tripped out track. If you were up on your stuff, you would have heard this track already. Five months ago, Wallabee self-released it via his SoundCloud page. Having smartly signed the track, Dream Raw adds an excellent track to an already impressive collection of tunes. A dig through Wallabee’s discography shows a penchant for deep lo-fi house, glistening pianos, and heavy reverb. One could easily get lost in more than one of his productions. Hint, hint…someone should sign his other track, “2K17.” For many, this will be a nice intro to an unknown producer, and we’ll certainly be watching out for Wallabee’s next releases.

Stay tuned for the rest of the compilation to drop. At 36 tracks, there are bound to be a couple you’ll love. Buy link is already online via bandcamp.

London-based label Axe On Wax (soundcloud) has been an absolute powerhouse as of late, dishing out quality offerings one after another between itself and its sub-labels, the gritty Axe Traxx and groovy forthcoming PNP. Now, the label’s main imprint has its AOW 008 release coming up, bringing back the dance floor focus with cozy cuts from Marlon Hoffstadt and Jesse Bru on the A’s, and Jad & The and Turenne rounding off the B’s.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/jad-and-the-gospel-five”/]

Our premiere track comes from Brisbane-born, Berlin-based Jad & The (soundcloud). You may know him previously as Jad & The Ladyboy, or simply Jad Lee, co-founder of taste-making radio show Beats of No Nation. Jad brings us B1 ‘Gospel Five’, a bouncy number packed with quirk and character. ‘Gospel Five’ opens with the immediacy of raw percussion and lightly droning flutters. Cosmic synth flourishes drives the track’s direction, moving forward against the backdrop of a casual dialogue between block keys chords. Jad chucks in some fun surprises – glitchy percussive rolls, abrupt wind-downs, and wobbly pitch slides… you name it. Just when you think the track is building momentum, we jump to an interlude featuring an up-pitched spoken vocal sample over tribal drums and a sustained, suspenseful pad-synth chord. Dynamic, engaging and unexpected, Jad & The’s track makes you listen real hard, but without compromising on that dance floor punch.

If early support from Baltra, Deejay Astral and DJ Octopus goes to show anything, it’s that AOW 008 is one to look out for!

It was only late last year that PIFF Records dropped their successful first release PIFF001 ‘To Adelaide’, showcasing a palate of uprising Australian producers and including with it an impressive Boiler Room Debut. Now, the Britol record imprint returns with Berlin-based Jesse Bru (soundcloud) on solo duties in PIFF002 ‘Heartless Love EP’.

PIFF002 makes for a charming, anecdotal story-teller, cohesive in its structure; Bru is deliberate in his placement of the four well-crafted tracks. Sandwiched in the middle between a lighthearted, playful 8-minutes of A1 ‘Let Me Know’, and the aptly named, moody yet invigorating B1 ‘Late Nite Jam’, is our track of choice.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-jesse-bru-heartless-love”/]

A2 ‘Heartless Love’ opens with glitches of bright, celestial synth arpeggios ringing above wind-chimes. A fluid, acid bass-line soon pervades, mellow and muffled when held against the crunchy, industrial percussive highs. Bru continues to play with opposites in shaping his bass-drum kicks, contrasting the steady four-to-the-floor thumps with more softly erratic rhythms. The vocal sample is perfectly understated, with each word yearningly suspended a touch longer than anticipated. Adding to the tracks eccentricity, Bru works in bursts of melodic slides, grainy edits and short delays. It’s as if the track drops you into a wavy old colour box-tv set in a dim, yellow-lit room, inviting you on a nostalgic journey of distorted memories and fuzzy dreams.

PIFF002 ‘Heartless Love EP’ rounds off with a bustling B2 ‘Tribute’, but also includes a Bandcamp bonus fifth track on mp3: the feel-good dance-cut ‘Tried’ is an ideal close for the upbeat yet quietly sentimental PIFF002 soundtrack. Pre-order the record here ahead of its May 30th release!
