Ben Gomori debuts on House Of Disco Records with a meaty package of acid-laced cuts and some huge remixes. ‘7AM At Wintergarten’ was inspired by his sprawling late-night / early-morning sets at the legendary Wintergarten room at Berlin’s Sisyphos, and was debuted there to great reactions. Panoramabar resident Massimiliano Pagliara completes the local link with his excellent heads-down, stomping remix.

‘Mars Joint’ is a tribute of sorts to one of Gomori’s heroes, Kerri Chandler, and combines one of his classic patches with gentle acid licks and whirring feedback FX. Jordan Nocturne crushes his Italo-electro remix—succinct but hugely effective—while promising Irish newcomer SHEE goes for a tough but deep atmospheric interpretation.

It’s been exactly one year since we interviewed Man Power for our MixedBy series. Since then, The Me Me Me founder has launched himself back into the world, returning to some form of normalcy post-COVID. The British maestro is back to throwing regular gigs in his home base of Newcastle and is touring once again, bringing his world-renowned DJ sets back to the masses.

To mark his welcomed return, Man Power has partnered with Finnish imprint Echocentric Records to release his first vinyl record of the year! Titled “Space Walk,” this EP contains a total of 3-tracks and sees Man Power in his element dishing out his signature sounds that have been labeled as ‘intergalactic house.’ However, in his latest rendition, the beats have more of a tribal feeling – resembling something closer to home than some of his extraterrestrial belters.

Case and point, we are premiering the A2 from the record titled “What a Puny Plan.” Like most dance tracks of this variety, I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on the track’s name, but instead, concentrate on its melodies. The song grabs your attention immediately with its gyrating bassline and almost ancestral-sounding percussion. This gives the listener the feeling as if an ancient ritual is about to take place and that Man Power is the shaman leading the procession. Man Power then continues to layer in waves of ethereal synths over menacing horns that give the tune some much-needed gravity – compelling the dancefloor to come together and groove as one. “What a Puny Plan” might be the closest thing you’ll come to having a religious experience at the club and we’re ready to repent for our sins!

INTERVIEW

Thomas, the Burnin Music story really started in Paris. How did that come about?
I started djing 2005 and started my own Parties 2007 because no one would book me as an unknown, it was in this cool underground venue La Java in Paris a monthly residency where I would book cool french acts, however I had to move through two more venues over the next couple of years as the parties grew too large for the initial venue.

I hosted these parties monthly which was stressful to manage and didn’t make much money so I thought about starting my own agency. It seemed to be the right time as I had built up contacts in the industry and the Burnin Music agency started in 2010. The name was inspired by the first Daft Punk L.P. which featured a track that was a homage to Chicago House titled “Burnin”. This LP was an essential influence for me and Chicago House was my vibe so it worked for me.

I ran the Agency for a couple of years and built the roster up to around a dozen DJ’s but it was hard work and not financially viable.Around this time I had just split up with my girlfriend and was already playing regularly in London at Sketch. With my ties to Paris breaking up I decided to move to London in 2014 where I worked my network and secured some regular slots at Shoreditch House and Soho House which gave me the security to stay and start a new life in London

At the time I had a flatmate who was a really cool guy, and also a DJ. We got on well and inspired each other. One day he said “why don’t you start a label?” and I said “why not”. With that I set about starting the label, I still liked the name Burnin and it was a logical growth from the parties, to agency, to label under the same brand.

How did your first release come about
I was away playing out in Lithuania where I was introduced to Alexander Pletnev aka Monty Python, we spent an afternoon in the Studio together before going on to play a club called Opium and we agreed to put out a record which became the first release, a four track E.P. on the label which came out in July 97 titled Black Magic.

Tell me about your journey into production.
I don’t come from a musician or production background, I started as a DJ and was hanging out, doing parties with the collective Colors fronted by Guilhem Monin and Stephane Ghenacia, and also Izaak Gray formerly of Earthboogie all of whom who inspired me to get into production.
I’m a very methodical person so wanted do things correctly, I’ve taken four years of piano lesson, I had an ear for music as a DJ although I did not know any music theory before this, when I started studying I let my tutor know I wanted to produce rather then be a musician and my training covered the basics of theory with my weekly lessons, I still wouldn’t consider myself a musician, but I now know enough to read a score, know keys, and understand chord progression which gives me the foundation to produce and put down the ideas in my head down in the studio.

Where did your artist name Pegasvs come from?
From a pair of trainers, from having no imagination from my Nike Pegasus which sound so stupid, you know it’s so hard man to find a name, I was going to use my own name Thomas Lesnier, but to me it just didn’t sound appealing. But the Pegasus name had an ancient Greek reference to it which made me think of Hercules and Love Affair and the Continental baths where Frankie and Larry fused house and disco. On discogs and social media a lot of artists were already using Pegasus so I replaced the u with a v like the cover on Hercules and Love affairs artwork on Blind.

Tell me a little about your musical inspiration?
I’m from Marseille which is a Hip Hop city so I would say I come from jazz as hip hop sampled jazz. For me electronic music has to contain a lot of melody. I’m really inspired by artists like Theo Parrish, Moodymann and in my early djing days I was obviously inspired by the unmistakable sound coming out of Paris at the time which can be quintessentially found on Roulé records founded by Thomas Bangalter.

The sound of the label so far although house is pretty mixed, what’s the reason for this and where are you going with the sound in the future?
That’s a great question, the initial discussion about the label I had with my first distributor was that the label would be putting out Chicago House but at the time I wasn’t clear with myself or them on how the label would evolve. At the beginning and as I met people in the industry whose electronic music I liked I didn’t stick to a particular flavour or genre on the label. As I’ve become a bit more experienced I now understand that I need to have some direction, the music doesn’t have to sound the same, but the releases still need to have some consistency. Looking back I’m really proud of all the music I have put out although if I had known what I know now I would have done things differently as I didn’t have that vision, that understanding and I was putting out records which were very different from the previous one and putting them all out on vinyl and I was paying for all of this. Releasing the five year compilation helped me realise the Burnin Music sound which is not so much dancefloor four to the floor. The music is a bit housey, a bit clubby although not only clubby it has some mutant house elements and even some downtempo tracks but they flow together. Even with the visual branding of the label, moving forward each cover will be the same template but with the colour scheme changed for each release which will be more consistent featuring the same design. It took me five years to get to this stage, to know I need to put out more music in a more consistent fashion.

What’s next for Burnin Music?
We have four releases lined up for 2023 all of which I have sent to the distributor. We have an open dialogue about how we are going to release these and what’s going to work. The goal is to achieve this same output as a minimum each year for the next three years and increase momentum as we go. I will also be doing more parties under the label brand in London and I have a new agent pushing my personal gigs as Pegasvs.
For the next scheduled release I stayed in touch with Ponty Mython who now produces under his real name Pletnev which he will be using on the first release of the year.

Camion Bazar deliver their psychedelia infused ‘Alteration’ EP via their own Jaki Records this February, comprising five original tracks from the Paris-based duo.

Camion Bazar is a collaborative project from Benedetta Bertella and Romain Hemono who over the past few years have been developing the project as DJ’s, stage curators and producers. Their tripped-out twist on House, Techno, Electronica and more has come via their own Jaki Records label and here the story continues with their latest EP, ‘Alteration’, pencilled for release in early 2023 and laden with original vocals from Benedetta throughout. The project will be released alongside the pairs debut live show at La Machine du Moulin Rouge in Paris.

Title-cut ‘Alteration’ opens and sees the pair merge warped synths, expansive dub echoes and bumpy organic drums alongside psychedelic guitar lines and hypnotic vocal chants. ‘Horizon’ follows elongated sub bass tones, intricately intertwined stabs, airy vocals and dubbed out keys before ‘Venosa’ employs playful drum breaks, an amalgamation of gnarly, resonant synth lines, bouncy bass groove and trippy spoken word vocal lines throughout.

‘Divinorum’ then sees the pair offer up a more classic house sound courtesy of crunchy drums, airy chord sequences, bubbling metallic arpeggios and sweeping atmospherics. ‘Limonia Acida’ then completes the package with jazzy keys, choppy bass stabs, a heavily swung drum workout and choppy vocal cuts ebbing and flowing throughout the composition.

Kicking off the year with an energetic mix by the Tel Aviv native, Berlin-based rising star DASCO. DASCO’s music is all about the dance-floor’s energy, and hers is infectious. She is one of these artists truly vibing behind the decks. Her latest Hör set confirms how much of a positive and colorful spirit she is spreading to the lucky dancers around her.

“My goal”, she says, “is to lift people up through my music and spread love and happy energy across the world”. 2022 has kept her busy, touring around Europe as well as playing in her current home of Berlin with a recent debut at the infamous Panorama Bar.

She also recently launched her new label Bisexuality exists, which aims “to normalize bisexuality in today’s society and to inspire people to live how they feel”, and we can’t wait to hear more about what she has in mind with this new project. She hasn’t planned to slow down as she has just released her Powerful Woman EP on Bristol’s ever influential Shall Not Fade label on January 13th. Keep your eyes ears out because one can’t escape the feeling that Dasco’s momentous year has just lifted off.

Thank you so much for taking the time to record this powerful mix for us! How did you select the tracks for the mix?

Hello guys and thanks for having me!For this mix I selected music which I play in clubs and could also fit for listening at home before or after the party ;)

What’s more important: the track you start with or the track you end on?
The track you start with in my opinion.

How was 2022 for you?
2022 was really great. I played in amazing clubs and Festivals like for example Into The Woods Festival in the Netherlands and also had my debut at Panorama Bar which was pure fun. I also launched my own record label Bisexuality Exists with the first release “Get High With Me”. I was really happy to receive so much love and support from the people.

You just released your ‘Powerful Woman’ EP on Bristol’s ever influential Shall Not Fade label. What a great way to start 2023! Could you share with us the concept behind and talk us through your process?
As a female music producer in a male-dominated industry, I have experienced and seen some of the challenges and discrimination women often must contend with.

In my track “powerful Woman” you can hear me saying the words “powerful”, “strong”. It acts as a reminder to myself as well as to others that we are much more stronger than we think.

It’s important to me to inspire other women through my music and show them that they shouldn’t be afraid to keep doing their thing despite gender discrimination. I would like to encourage others to never be afraid to show themselves to the world in their own authentic way and to be proud of who they are, to be proud of their femininity and independence.

You moved to Berlin in 2014, right? Were you already involved in the music scene as a Dj in your hometown Tel Aviv before?
Yes that’s true. I moved to Berlin in 2014 but I‘m visiting Tel Aviv often, especially in winter time.

I was involved in the music scene and started to DJ before I moved to Berlin but I understood quite fast that if I would like to make it as a DJ And

Music Producer, Tel Aviv which is very male dominated is not the right place for me.
Now things there got slightly better though unfortunately you can still feel the inequality between women and men. Fingers crossed things will change soon.

How have both cities influenced you as a DJ and producer?
In Tel Aviv I felt like I always needed to prove my worth to others so it made me working really hard.

Berlin influenced me by relaxing me and taking away all the stress of living in Israel and also giving me the freedom and support to do my art and express myself the way I feel like.

Are you particularly permeable to what surrounds you, creatively speaking? If so, how does it influence your DJ focus?
Yes I’m am. I love being on the move, between gigs, visiting new countries, all this inspires me. I am inspired by changes, new places and new people and I always search for new sounds and new adventures. I also really love fresh air and being close to nature which really relaxes me and when I’m relaxed I feel inspired the most.

Do you listen to “club” music in your day to day life or do you reserve it for your digging sessions only?
Yes for sure. I listen to almost all kinds of music at home, depending on my mood. It can be club music, R&B, Pop, Ambient, Jazz, Funk and more. Good music is good music.

You recently founded your own label : Bisexuality exists, focusing on women, non-binary, and LGBTQ + communities. Can you tell us more about it and what you’ll be doing with it?
As a bisexual, it is important for me to normalize bisexuality/ bisexual visibility in the public space and to campaign against biphobia and bi-erasure. It is important for me to represent the bisexual community with pride and with the respect it deserves. I’m planning to release more music on my label this year. Expect the unexpected…

How’s the queer scene in Tel Aviv, and how connected are you with the community there?
The queer scene in Tel Aviv is great and so much fun! Most of the parties I play in Tel Aviv are queer parties and every time the energy there is so liberated! It is like a big happy celebration.

Do you think the identity that a DJ/producer/artist presents on social media is increasingly essential when it comes to being booked? How are you personally navigating through this?
Yes, I think it is quite essential. Times have changed and this days without having social media, maybe not so many people will have the opportunity to know your music.

I’m personally posting often on social media and sometimes I can spend too much time on this. The problem is that with touring and posting regularly on socials, sometimes I don’t have enough time to create new music. I always say that if I didn’t have social media I could probably finish an album. I think though that soon I will let someone else manage my socials so I can focus on the main reason why I’m here in this world which is to lift people up through the music I create.

What’s one club, venue, or party that has had the most impact on you as an artist?
Defiantly Panorama Bar. I went there for the first time I think in 2012, even before I started to DJ. I don’t know why and how to explain this but the energy there is just magical.

Any recent set that really blew you away as a dancer?
I really love Job Jobse’s sets, such a great DJ!

What is the last record you purchased?

Manchester-based producer Sameed makes his debut on D.C. imprint Better Listen Records with his 4-track EP, Ode to G. This record is Sameed’s first and only release of 2022 and sees the lad explore familiar territories of US funk, soul and R&B to create his signature brand of looped samples and melodies.

The title track and “Want You” comprise the A-side and introduce listeners to what can be described as an upbeat, disco-house affair. Placing soulful vocals at the forefront of each, Sameed crafts two, captivating tales of love at its infatuation stages. The theme carries itself through onto the B-side of “Ode to G” with Sameed’s dub mix of “Feel It.” However, this time around, the producer applies a percussive, stripped-down approach in creating a climactic gospel-infused weapon. To finish things off, Sameed demonstrates his versatility with the tune Baby. Almost like a cigarette after sex, this original provides listeners with a much-needed respite by incorporating styles more resembling UK future garage than the soulful influences from tracks prior. Although unexpected, Baby provides a welcomed change of pace that shows another side of love – one that feels more real and less rose-colored.

From uptempo deep cuts, to jazzy house, slow trance and acid broken beat… Broken District again proves its will to explore uncharted musical territories. “Brokenbits Vol. 3” is the latest instalment in their series of compilations, featuring productions from the label’s friends and affiliated talents. As always, this new volume explores a wide variety of sounds, with musical works produced by Horatio Luna & Nikodimos, Interface Palm, Slowaxx, and Thermal (Sevenbeatz x Moody Gliani).

Horatio Luna returns to Broken District after his first appearance on Interface Palm’s album (Curated Space, 2022). This time, he kicks off the release with a collaborative track with fellow Melbourne musician and producer Nikodimos. Together, they deliver us “Fly”, a modern jazzy house ballad that really feels like an improvised jam, with Horatio’s bassline answering to Nikodimos’ saxophone and transverse flute notes. Yet, make no mistake, nothing’s improvised: the two Australian artist gives us an intricated, multi-layered production that will hit jazz-heads right in the heart.

Interface Palm again lands his beautiful work on Broken District, with “Digital Day”, following his first mini LP “Curated Space” recently released on the label. This time he produces a high-powered, 130bpm broken / deep house track with a beautiful 80s, lo-fi treatment that will set a rough, hazy mood on dancefloors.

Slowaxx makes his first appearance on Broken District. With “Linn Orchestra”, this Tuscan-based Italian producer takes us on a jazzy, acid, broken beat trip. The track is led by atmospheric pads creating an almost dramatic setting… but they are overlapped with a colourful bass sequence, acid synths and a powerful rhythm (based on the LinnDrum drum machine – hence the title) that brings a peculiar flavour to this odd piece of music. The kind of production that really stick to the Broken District aesthetic.

Closing the compilation on a strong note is Thermal, the joint-project from Bordeaux-based French producers Sevenbeatz and Moody Gliani. They put together “Vice Street”, a downtempo take on trance music with transcending basslines and a strong 4/4 beat built to challenge the best sound system. It’s a really smart production, with its long breaks, strong builds and overall feeling of never-ending electronic journey.

French firecracker Adrien Calvet shacks up on those sun-kissed Bali shores providing a luscious EP for Pantai People’s fifth release. Soulful serenity underpinned by bumping house grooves with that distinctive French feel.

On the A, title track ‘Le Doigt De Toto’ kicks off the journey with its infectious bassline, sweeping pads and absorbing vocals. Beachside or boothside, this one hits just right. Berlin’s Cinthie then works her magic giving it a late night, heads down, deep house rework. Flip it over for another two gems, the jazz-infused, acid-tinged ‘Riesling’ featuring Coupe Melba that slips down like a smokey Negroni with an added kick and the slap bass channelling, cosmic percussive workout ‘Esperance’.

In a utopian lysergic world, music is what unites every soul. Today Fauve Records have the honor to release a prolongation of their “Make ___ Great Again” series with a brand new one revolving around Dream House. Close to Italo Disco, Dream House is a sub-genre of House and Trance music that appeared at the second half of the 90’s in Europe, with labels such as Dance Floor Corporation (DFC) or even ZYX Records.

They’ve asked some of the best in the games to create a very diversified pallet of sub-sub-genres.
Alpine DJ with a fusion of Italo & Dream House, Mario Moretti with a flying club anthem, Tre Turner’s first official release with a more EBM approach filled with FM percussions, DJ Gear with a Deep Housy take, DJBoeing on a similar genre but with sunshine infused melodies and a catchy riff, Manuel Darquart with a Balearic downtempo acid grasping groove, Romain FX with a fast-paced mellow piano house jam, Val-Air to turn down the mood with a break-beat balearic tune and last but not least, Mangabey closing the compilation with a analog-tape & raw hip-hop infused house track.

If this doesn’t cover the full spectrum of Dream House, then take another acid.

Blur Records is proud to present the debut of Irish DJ and Producer – Tree Threes – who delivers a superb 5-track EP entitled “Our House” featuring 5 remixes by the outstanding producers Henrik Villard, Henna Onna, Manuel Kane, Max Caesar & Sune.

Born & raised in Cork, Ireland, Tree Threes is known for his distinctive sound, ranging from House to Broken Beat, inspired by fellow Cork natives Fish Go Deep & the British Broken-Beat scene.

The now London-based producer, who has released a flurry of tracks and EPs on some of the most prestigious house labels on the planet, has now dropped a wonderful 5-track EP with us entitled “Our House” and as a celebration, we decided to invite close friends of the label and some of the hottest producers in the scene at the moment: the Norwegian producer Henrik Villard, Armenian wunderkind Henna Onna, the Greek prolific artist Manuel Kane, the German upcoming talent Max Caesar and the Swedish Honey Butter label boss Sune.

Tree Threes delivers a superbly well-composed EP of understated House music, with the remixers taking it to another level with their quirky and slick reinterpretations of the originals, in what promises to be one of our most successful releases so far.
