After the chart-topping Keep on Swindling part 1, that included summer anthem ‘All I want’ and the live jazz rework of ‘The break up’ by Emma-Jean Thackray, Dam Swindle are now back with part 2 of their 10-year anniversary series. If you thought the first edition had the goods, you’re in for a treat with this one. Keep on Swindling part 2 includes a new afro-tinged DS original, alongside a never-released remix of an obscure Guadeloupean record and remixes by rising star of the Detroit music scene Ash Lauryn and Rush Hour favorite Arp Frique. To top things off, the boys release their afro-brass dancefloor burner ‘Call of the Wild’ feat. Jungle by Night for the first time on a single.

The Ep closes with a Dam Swindle original for the 2018 album High Life that really needs no introduction: ‘Call of the wild feat. Jungle by Night.’ It’s a track that seems to keep the dancers happy wherever we play it and hasn’t lost any of its appeal in the past four years. Originally only released in album format, this track now makes its way on a single 12” to round off an exciting new release by the Swindles. Enjoy the music, play it loud and remember…

Keep on Swindling!

The driving and Tsavo opens the EP with dynamic layered percussion and a classic house hook. Next on Let’s Play House: A feisty and sassy slab of funky house from Amsterdam upstarts Makèz, Elevation is twirl of saucy tracks with a toothy demeanor that will charm you onto the dance floor. The special sauce here comes from a musicality that’s studied but not too clean and a bright instrumentation that evokes the golden years of Metro Area.

“Melting” is slinky post-disco for gilded, glammy digs; “Elevation” is a lightheaded pas de deux; “One 4 the Dreamers” is a rolling late-night creeper with a tickle of jazz; and “Merlot,” which features Alternative Tone Adjustment on keys, is a chunky strut down the catwalk. Designed for clubs, tuned for the radio.

Makèz (formed by Jan-Willem Mulder and Kees van ‘t Klooster) are a duo from Amsterdam, where they both studied music production and sound design. Apart from DJ’ing under various aliases, they’ve also been organizing their own successful intimate party series “Peak Mystique”. It’s hard not to get infected by their production. Their ‘Different Planets’ EP sees the duo navigate between disco flavored house, dreamy electronics and old school Chicago influences. The remix is by none other than Belfast based DJ and founder of Body Fusion: Bobby Analog.

The title track is a warm house bumper with an Italo-tinged bassline, filtered leads and fuzzy Rhodes chords. Female chants running in the background and an ‘eyes-closed-hands-up’ break down give this track a proper summer feel-good attitude. Bobby Analog does a great job remixing ‘Different Planets’, flipping the original into a classic Chicago-tinged club track. Stabs, little synths licks and strings all give you that nod to a classic Chez & Trent production, whereas the clever bassline showcases a nice bit of Bobby’s own musical heritage.

The flip shows a deeper side of Makèz, with the synth heavy electronics of ‘Cosmic Symphony’ where a modulating Moog-like bassline and syncopated piano make for an uplifting atmosphere. The b-side is concluded by ‘Random Visits’; an arpeggio- infused tune with raw guitars and ditto percussion. Be sure to grab your copy now, out on the 13th septembre 2019.

Hugo Mari, formerly known as Books, has been receiving a lot of well-deserved love of late, and for good reason. Even though the London-based producer has been delivering respected dance-floor cuts and Edits on labels such as Omena, XVI and Sound Of Speed, his most recent release on Detroit Swindles’ Heist has really helped put him on the map. Having remixed Dele Sosimi and been remixed by Laurence Guy and Kai Alce, Hugo is moving in the right circles and it’s only a matter of time before he really gets the recognition he deserves.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-hugo-mari-unalloyed-pleasure” /]

His debut EP, out on 24th may, for Freerange is aptly titled Unalloyed Pleasure and consists of three originals that will give you and the dance floor just that. The lead track manages to meld slamming kicks, distorted bassline, deep, cinematic strings, disco hats and cut up spoken word into something fresh and unique.

Raise It Up sees Hugo go full on euphoric disco mode with an uplifting slice of sun-drenched soul just perfect for the summer months ahead. Lush Philly strings and vocal sample bring a classic vibe and catchy hook to the party.

Closing out this brilliant EP we have Just A Memory, a jazzier and more pensive slice of deep house music with upright bassline and familiar Rhodes sample taking centre-stage. Snippets of vocal float in and out of focus whilst the rolling, percussive groove brings an immersive energy that locks you in to it’s seductive mood.

Fresh off of releases last year on Let’s Play House and Optimo Music, Dutch artist Perdu is set to release Skye EP on Detroit Swindle’s Heist Recordings on May 6th. The last year has seen his music evolve as his studio evolves, adding new styles and flavors in his tracks as new gear is added to the workflow. His newest release on is a reflection of this evolution, showing hints of deeper house and techno influences alongside world infused rhythms and melodies. The EP is topped with a remix by DJ Boring which will surely be deployed late into sets by DJs around the world all summer long. You can grab a copy soon here.

INTERVIEW

Tell us where you’re from ?Where are you based now?
Hey! First of all thanks for having me in your mixed by series. I’m from Leiden but living in Amsterdam for over 10 years now.

When did you start DJing?
I (tried) to start DJing when I was fourteen. I got two turntables and a mixer from my older brother at that age. I started collecting vinyl but couldn’t mix for a long time. A friend of mine had these two little CDJ 200’s and a Xone 62 where I learned to play with CD’s. So eventually my first gig happened at the age of 16 in Leiden.

Who were your first musical inspirations?
Next to the cliché kind of artists there were Dutch artists like Olene Kadar, Lauhaus, 2000 and One, Kabale und Liebe who inspired me to start with the music I play nowadays. They played in my hometown Leiden at the LVC a lot back then, where I heard this type of electronic music for the first time. Of course it’s different with what I play nowadays but they made me look into the electronic music world for the first time.

Three artists that inspire you the most?
At the moment? Ehm. Nowadays you have so many great artists coming from Australia and Canada. It’s crazy to see what they’re doing there at the moment. Next to D. Tiffany or Roza Terenzi (which is also in this mix) I must say the whole Danish crew is killing it at the moment as well. But definitely Roza Terenzi is a big inspiration. I read all her interviews/heard almost all her mixes and she’s definitely a musician at heart. Also Danish dj/producers such as DJ Central (also in this mix), C.K. or DJ Sports are a big inspiration to me. I love the way they produce their tracks and work out their mixes.

Three tracks you are playing right now?

Mu Project – Asia Dream (always on repeat through the week, the whole album is great)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcBocJA9mV4Video can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Mu Project – Asia Dream (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcBocJA9mV4)

Blue Gas – Shadows from Nowhere

Hidden Gems Nation – Big Trouble in Little Asia

Three records you wish you had made?
It’s easier to name three tracks I wish I hadn’t made! Haha.

Who’s Jane?
It’s the second name of my girlfriend. She’s making huge steps in her job she’s working in and is away a lot. So we’re both really busy last couple of months and kind of living in our own world. Even when we’re together at home haha. But we respect it from each other! I guess.. That’s how I came up with the name.

What is it about Sacramento?
Sacramento doesn’t mean anything actually. I made the track and thought the name fitted the vibe of the track.

Is DJ Boring fun?
I guess. Will probably meet him for the first time upcoming weekend. The Detroit Swindle guys asked him to do the remix so I don’t actually know him. According to the video he did for a cooking channel he must be fun. Don’t tell me that you don’t know that video?

What’s on your rider?
Nothing special actually. Sorry :)

What’s next for you, tell us?
Next to my new Skye EP we were just talking about, which will be released the 6th of May, I got a new remix coming up for a Bulgarian label. It’s from an Oud player; I really love that instrument so I was excited when the label asked me to do the remix. Furthermore I’m finishing a new EP which will be released later this year. Also I’m doing a track on a compilation for an Australian label with some other artists I really like. I can say I’m really grateful how thinks come as they are at the moment.

Since their 2016 debut, Ouer having been making serious waves in the realm of house music. Whether it’s through their own OUER imprint, or impressive releases on the likes of Heist or Neovinyl, Ouer have by now proved themselves as a name that’s definitely here to stay. Having released their last EP just three months ago, Ouer show no signs of slowing down as they kick off their 2019 with what might be their most inspiring EP to date: The Stingray Nebula EP on Dirt Crew Recordings.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-ouer-undine” /]
The Stingray Nebula EP features 5 tracks, ranging from the smooth percussive bliss of ‘Thales’, the emotional late night piano of “Inside”, to the etheric arpeggiations of the Stringray Nebula, this release spans a vast variety of genres and feelings. Our pick is the A side closer titled ‘Undine’. The most loop-based track on the EP, ‘Undine’ has an almost trance-like quality, growing and blossoming as it plays, it builds and builds until it erupting in a burst of energy. A party track and emotional experience both in one, ‘Undine’ is one “moving” track if we’ve ever seen one, both literally and figuratively! While staying true to their Chicago and Detroit inspired roots, Ouer have been consistently pushing their own boundaries, incorporating elements and sounds from a seemingly ever-growing arsenal of musical influences. Take a trip to the Stingray Nebula on us, we’re sure you’ll want to stick around!Pre-order the Stingray Nebula EP here.

Hugo Mari is a name that should be new to your ears, but is not one to forget. Today we present a single from Hugo Mari’s debut record, which is to be released on the mighty Heist Recordings on 3rd December 2018. The five-track EP has three originals from the main man Hugo and two remixes on the B-side by none other than NDATL label head Kai Alcé. Previously Hugo had a string of releases as ‘Books’ on a variety of underground labels, including XVI, OMENA and his own label High Praise. Much to our satisfaction, despite the name change, Hugo is still making groovy soulful house jams. The whole EP is first class, and sits right at home on Detroit Swindles Heist Recordings. The track we have the pleasure of presenting is titled ‘Feel Ur Senses’.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-hugo-mari-feel-ur-senses” /]
The aptly titled B1, which has a repeated vocal chanting the mantra that is the title, is an emotive track that indeed tickles all the right senses. The drawn out chords have an almost sensual appeal which, when paired with the understated bassline, give you a warm and fuzzy feeling. The track continues to evolve with various elements being introduced throughout, such as different types of percussion and a rising lead synth that pairs perfectly with the established motif. Overall it is an expertly arranged piece and a big standout in the EP and as a debut for Hugo’s new alias.

The North London based Hugo is a busy man, between his time in the studio he’s promoting a night and running a label. Luckily he had some time to answer some questions about his release, production method and his future plans.

Tell us about your E.P and how it feels to release on the mighty Heist?
It feels great! I’ve been buying their records since the first release & they’ve put me on to some great artists so it’s an honour to join the ranks

How did you get your music in front of Detroit Swindle?
Maarten sent me a message on my Facebook page asking if I’d be interested in doing a release.

I didn’t ask how they’d heard my music but the Omena and High Praise releases were getting some spins from DJs so I imagine they heard one of those.

Let’s talk production, what equipment was used to make the EP?
I use Native Instruments Machine a lot. That’s where I do all my drums and often sampling and fx etc. Aside from that, hardware wise on that release, I used a Moog Sub37 for a couple of sounds but that’s it really. There’s a fair bit of gear in my studio but I don’t always use it, the Rhodes and other synth sounds are VST’s!

Under your previous alias you’ve been making moves and bubbling away with gigs in London for a fair few years. Patience and persistence seems to be key in this game, would you agree?
DJing has always been my job so I see it kind of separately to what I’m doing now with the production side. I do agree though and the main thing is that you love the process and put the time in. I’ve never worried much about anything other than trying to make good music!

You run a label with a close friend, what is High Praise about and can we expect a release anytime soon?
High Praise is a record label and party run by me & my good friend & manager Josh (Rogue & Josh). Focusing on high energy, soulful tracks for the dance floor. Yes! The first track from HP03 was premiered yesterday.

That release is set to drop mid December and it’s fire! Two excellent & very original edits from London broken beat mainstays EVM128 & James Rudie aka. Rude & Mean. We have HP04 and HP05 lined up for next year with two very exciting artists and then I’ll probably do 06 myself!

Future plans, what is happening 2019?
I’ve got a release coming I think in February on a Japanese label that I love called Soundofspeed. Right now I’m working on a release for another dream label of mine which, this time a London based one! Then I guess I’ll try to put out another release or two in the second half of 2019 but who knows – I haven’t really thought that far ahead!

Alma Negra is a multi-man mega collaboration between Dersu and Diego Figueira, Dario Rohrbach, and Mario Robles.

Hello and welcome back to Bolting Bits! It looks like you `ve been busy since your Mixed By interview way back in 2016. How are you doing? How has your Summer been?
Hello! The pleasure is on our side. Thanks we are all well. We had a busy Year so far, as we started our own Label Alma Negra Records early this year. We started with the Idea to show different Rhythms that are not yet well known in Europe. We want to do 12 Ep s in that series that shows a specific Rhythm ore is dedicated to the music of a Country. So we started with a Brasil influenced Ep .

After we had the chance to do some Reworks of Maloya music , that comes from the Reunion Island. The 3rd one is a Rework with Music from Erytrea. We are very Happy that we could get all those licences . Thats a whole lot of Work :) .Last but not least our Friend James Stewart made his first Ep on our Label and the result is awsome. All recorded Instruments and collaborations with singers check it out.

Also we made an Ep at Marcel Vogel’s Label Lumberjacks in Hell . that Ep are mostly live sessions we did in the Studio and showed for the first time the live approach we also have. So as you see we are very busy hahahaha. We had quiet a lot of Gigs in the beginning of the summer and now we are looking forward to the Club season.

Let’s dig into the new EP! I know you like to approach the music making process with various techniques ranging from sampling to recording your own percussion,
how did this EP come together? Was there anything different about the process compared to previous releases?
Every release is different. We work in different ways always. We record a lot of percussion and we record different musicians as well .Also sometimes we use Sampling as a technique.

Any choice pieces of studio gear you couldn’t live without? Any recent additions that can be heard on the EP?
We always try new synths and stuff but We can t live without our percussions. Mainly Congas and Djembes. We added perc on the main track Conversation.

You’ve recently made the crossover to live performance, has that influenced the way you make music in the studio? Has it changed how you feel about DJing?
We clearly separate Djing and the Live project. We love to Dj and this is a big passion. But in therms of production and Studio work for sure the Live thing is getting more influence wich is very cool. It all melts together and thats anyway what we want to do.

This is your second EP on Heist Recordings, what’s it like being part of the Heist family and working with Maarten and Lars?
The Heist label works absolutely professional all over. We are very happy to be part of that family that is a real family. Maarten and Lars are friends who share the same passion in music awesome guys . They have a deep knowledge … not only in dance music. As Dj s for sure they are one of the Big guys around.

Lastly, tell us something we don’t know about Alma Negra!
A lot of people are still confused who Alma Negra is . hahahaa So here you get it .
Alma Negra is a Dj/producer duo made out of the Twins Dersu and Diego Figueira ,In the Live project /Studio / Label /AR we work together with Mario Robles.

📷 Star Of Persia

Seven years into their Detroit Swindle project, Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets have certainly transcended their humble beginnings as two Kerri Chandler fans with a funny name. Hailing from Holland, the duo has cemented themselves as true artists and tastemakers through standout releases, memorable DJ sets, an ambitious live show, and their label Heist Recordings.

Since starting Heist in 2013, they have aided and abetted the careers of a number of notable conspirators such as Nachtbraker, Nebraska, Fouk, and Frits Wentink. Through the label’s clean aesthetic, fans are exposed to modern interpretations of the wide-ranging influences that inspire the duo’s productions and DJ sets. With nods from everything to nostalgic-soaked disco to far out African rhythms, there is a throughline of clever musicality that serves as a connection between both studio session and DJ sets.

On High Life, the duo’s second album, Maarten & Lars pushed the boundaries of what a Detroit Swindle track could be and, in that process, brought on a number of collaborators. Vocal guests Tom Misch and Seven Davis Jr make appearances alongside Amsterdam-based brass band Jungle By Night and keyboardist Lorenz Rhode — whose inspired synth and piano playing can be heard throughout the album and is currently on tour as part of the Detroit Swindle live show.

We caught up with the duo ahead of their performance at Phi Centre here in Montreal. Check out their inspirations behind the album and get a look into their live show in the interview below.

High Life is clearly your most ambitious project to date, what were some of the goals for the album? Any big takeaways or lessons learned now that it’s finished?
I guess our main goal was to explore our own sound as far as we could. We had a general idea of the kind of music that we wanted to make, but when you start a project like this from nothing, it’s unclear what will come out until you’ve gone down that road of improvisation and discovery. We did set out to record a piece of music that would work both for club use, as well as for home listening and obviously, the development in taste and the development in our sound over the years has played a big role in our ambitions for this album. We also specifically wanted to see in what way we could go back to the first Detroit Swindle records like “The Wrap Around” and make music that is both contemporary, and relatable to those first records we put out.

Listening back to it, I think we managed to create a really warm, coherent and soulful piece of music that’s not too pretentious and most importantly: we feel that both our earliest fans, as well as people that get introduced to us for the first time through this album will find something they can relate to.

Almost every track on “High Life” has a collaborator, how did you decide who to collaborate with and what was the process like?
We both really liked the idea of working with vocalists and after having worked with a guest musician on our last ep (Marc de Clive-Lowe played keys on “just not Norma”), we knew that this was a really nice way to broaden our perspective and sound. The choice for who to work with on this project musically, was pretty much the same as our approach for the concept, production and artwork: We wanted to make this a really personal project, so we also wanted to work with people we know well and have a personal connection with. We had already done a remix for Tom Misch and stayed in touch ever since, meeting up whenever we’re in London so he was our first pick. With Seven Davis Jr, we had already worked as well, remixing him and performing on stage live a couple of years back. Lorenz Rhode is a close friend and already joins us for our live shows as a key player, so we know eachother well and he really understands our view on music, which is really nice when you’re jamming in the studio and throwing out ideas. We chose to work with Jungle by Night because of our Amsterdam connection and we really have a good personal click with the musicians. It was lovely to work with all of them, and each process was different. With Jungle by Night, we spent 2 days in the Red Bull Studios in Amsterdam recording different parts to our track Call of the Wild, which was already finished for a large part. “Yes, No, Maybe” with Tom was the result of a jam session with him, Lorenz and us in our own studio. When they laid down those chords together, we really got goosebumps and knew we had something special going on.

You are known for your modern take on a vintage sound, how did you go about translating that into the live show? Did any of the songs change significantly from the originals?
The Live show is a combination of album tracks and a few older DS tracks that we really enjoy playing live. Depending on the song, we’ll play it pretty much like we recorded it (Flavourism), or we’ll play a complete free flow and improvise on stage (Ketama Gold). Some older tracks like Pursuit have evolved during the years of playing it live and i’m not even sure what the recorded track sounds like. I just know that the version we play live is really fun and energetic.

Has playing live changed your approach at all in terms of creating music or was the live set perhaps an extension of your creative process in the studio?
The live show is a special thing. It’s not something we think of when we’re producing music, but now, looking at the way we’ve set it up and the music the we can play, I can see that it’s connected. We’ve chosen to play certain tracks and take out others based on how we can play them live, if the message of the song will come across, and if we can make an interesting live rendition of it. In a way, it’s a whole new creative process because you have all these elements in a track, and you need to decide what to play live, what to sequence and how to build it up. A track like “High Life” for instance, has so many different chords and parts running and whilst writing the track, we never thought of the challenges we would have to play it live. It is one of the funnest tracks to play though, because there’s so much happening.

How did you build the live set? What elements and gear came first?
I’m not sure which version of our live show we’re at right now, but we’ve had many different setups over the years. Right now, the sequencing, samples and drums, – the rhythmic core if you will- comes from the Elektron Analog Rytm and the Dave Smith Pioneer Toraiz sampler. We have a bunch of submixes cause we work from 3 ‘stations’, and there’s quite some processing going on like filtering, sidechaining, etc. For keys, we’ve always had a Fender Rhodes on stage and now, we have Lorenz playing that along with the DSI OB-6, and i play the DSI Prophet 6 and Elektron Analog Keys, which has an onboard sequencer and is really versatile.

Any go-to guides or perhaps some advice for young producers looking to build out a live set?
Start small, and make sure you know the gear you work with inside out. If there’s one lesson in playing live, it’s that machines will not react the way you expect them to. Midi will stop for no reason. Patches will disappear, things will sound completely different on stage. Anything that can go wrong will, at some point, go wrong. If you know your machines and you’ve practised day in day out, you’ll know how to deal with those challenges and still deliver a great show.

As frequent travellers, have you ever missed a flight? Do you have any bad travel stories in particular?
We’re actually really good with planning, so we’ve only missed 1 flight so far, which wasn’t really our fault because the airport security was on strike. It took us 3,5 hours to get through security and customs on the airport in Lisbon and the whole tension at the airport was the craziest ever. Unfortunately, because of this we missed our own label night in Berlin that day, so that was really bad. Traveling with a live show like ours (5 flightscases), is quite intense as well. There’s a lot that can get lost and a lot that can break. We’ve survived quite well so far though, so let’s hope we’re not jinxing it.

Where and what food are you looking forward to eating most in North America?
Aah, the food. Almost our main reason to be in this business. Lars told me about this sushi place in Detroit he was crazy about after the last show in Detroit, so we’re definitely going there. I also this that we can’t miss a good midnight Poutine when we’re in Montreal. Gotta go for the classics right? In general, the food is really nice in North America so i’m sure we’ll come back in dire need of a diet and some excercise…
