Verner got his breakthrough last year, following a stellar seven track 12-incher on Nachtbraker’s Quartet Series. The genre-defying release offered everything from groovy jazz to synth-driven house and even soundtrack-style compositions. Such a complete release turned heads all over the place and it wasn’t long until Axe On Wax got the Milanese keys virtuoso on board.

Run by Fede Lng, Axe On Wax is one of the most respected outfits of the lo-fi and raw house scene, having provided househeads with a number of hits from the likes of Baltra, Florian Kupfer and DJ Swagger among many others.

Style-wise, Verner is a slight a detour from the norm at AOW but nonetheless the upcoming EP is a great showcase of just how versatile the Berlin-based producer is. The 6-track release features dreamy electro, drum machine madness, croaking basslines, funky synths and anything in-between. Having already featured in the sets of Peach, OR:LA and Sally C, the Debbie Coke EP is coming out hot on 26th of April.

Over the last decade Milan-born London-based producer Fabio Monesi has carved a secure place for himself among the upper echelons of classic house music. Monesi is a true house maestro whose hardware-driven productions bring timeless rhythm to the dancefloor through their gritty Chicago vibe. Most of these productions have landed on his own imprint, Wilson Records, with other releases finding their way to labels that share his distinctly raw club-based sound such as L.I.E.S. Russian Torrent Versions, Skylax Records, and Crème Organization. Monesi also operates under his Hissman alias, where he indulges in his even more underground side, having delivered dusty cuts on his other label Hardmoon London, as well as Dog in the Night and Dixon Avenue Basement Jams. Beyond the studio, Monesi’s biography as a DJ is equally as impressive. 2014 saw the launch of his analogue live set, and his busy touring schedule has helped keep him in demand as a hot booking among some of Europe’s finest lineups. If you hail from London, you can catch him at Five Miles on June 22, playing an Axe on Wax party alongside Florian Kupfer and Fede Lng – bring a towel.

In between all this, Monesi managed to squeeze us in to spin some yarns and some records for our MIXED BY/ series. You can read the full interview below:

INTERVIEW

As usual, let’s kick things off with where it all began. Growing up in Milan in an era where house music was still very underground, we’d love to know about your early experiences in the scene and its influence on you. Were there any parties that were particularly memorable?
Well the house music scene in Italy was very popular in the 90s so all the thing that arrived when I started playing were influenced by the past and by those italian dj who played very hi quality house music. Some of these dj are still very popular as they gave a big contribute to the world scene.

I had so many good memories from those years so I cannot choose a specific party right now. I remember that in Italy, we used to have some kind of shows with dancers dressed in a particular way during the night, something special for each night and this is something we are missing nowadays as all the attention is focussed just on the guest dj.

Your music is known for drawing inspiration from the golden era of house in Chicago, Detroit and New York. What is it about the producers from these scenes that attracts you most? Are there any other genres or scenes that are worth a mention?
Since I am a machines lover I draw inspiration from those producers who used to make music with hardwares. All the process is more fascinating to me, it doesnt matter where they were/are from, what counts to me is the process. I like to know how they arrived to make certain sounds/tracks. Which machines they used to play and how they processed the sounds.

Hip hop is definetely the genre I listen to most.

While we’re on the topic of your distinct sound, it’s no secret that you’re a hardware whiz. What was the first piece of hardware you bought? Do you still use a lot of your original machines?
The first drum machines I bought was a roland R8, I’m still using it sometimes while the first synth was a Korg M1, I still remember how excited I was.

Still speaking production, I have to say that your samples are out of this world. Can you talk a bit about your approach to sampling?
I sample everything, when I listen to something suddently something happen in my mind and I say ohhh man, this is something I could use in some way.

It’s not a simply process, I’m quite messy with samples and sounds but this helps me to be different all the time, in all of my tracks, as I never use the same sound.

Wilson records has featured quite a lot of stuff from unknown artists. Is this an intentional part of the way you curate your label?
If you are refering to the wilson limited series, it’s a series born in order to support physical record shop and I decided to let the music speak. This kind of releases have always fascinated me as they drive my fantasy.

Can you tell us the story of the Hissman alias? Where did the idea come from and how would you describe the difference between a Hissman track and a Fabio one?
As I said, I’ve always been attracted by the past and the process the old producers used to have in their home studios. Those dirty sonorities inspired this project. When Hissman was born I felt I still had a lot to give to the new wave of the new jersey deep house scene so I decided to create another project in order to show my passion for the darker/rawer sonorities.
Nowadays I could say Fabio Monesi is more club oriented while Hissman remain a experimental/raw/ project probabily much darker than Fabio Monesi but I have to say sometimes I don’t know who is Fabio and who is Hissman. I am also thinking about launching new projects but I cannot say much at the moment.

Running two labels, producing your own material, and touring must have your schedule pretty packed. Outside of music, is there anything you do to unwind?
Nowadays I run 3 labels, the third one is not pushed at all trought my socials but it’s going very well and I’m keeping it more underground.

As you said I already have so many things to think about and so I don’t have much time to focuss on something else.

In terms of your own crate digging adventures, what are some of your favourite records you’ve picked up over the years?
The best records are those that are still underrated and relatively unknow. :)

What about out of your own music? Do you have a favourite track or EP? (mine is 623, by the way.)
Oh 623 was dedicated to Kerri Chandler who was my main inspiration source at the time, I have to say I’m not into that mood anymore I think I gave my contribution to that sound and now I’m looking for something else.

Probably my favorite EP is Pipe Dreams on Wilson Records. And Abduction EP on Hardmoon London.

Your career trajectory has been pretty stellar so far, what does the future look like? Can you let us in on any exciting plans?
Well thank you, I am never satisfied so I work hard everyday in order to build something stronger and stronger. My dj gigs are going very well so I wish to continue this direction.

Finally, let’s talk about the mix itself. How and where was it recorded and was there any particular mood or theme you wanted to convey?
I recorded the mix while I was choosing records for my gig at Il muretto.

The good things of podcast is that you don’t need to bang all the time, I like to play something that I will be pleased to listen to in every situation, like at home while cooking for example, so decided to play something I don’t play often in clubs, alongside some unreleased and upcoming tracks.

Kirk The Flirt – Good Vibrations (Physical Therapy Mini Dub) [Axe on Wax]

Allergy Season head honcho, Physical Therapy aka Kirk The Flirt, has joined forces with Axe On Wax’s grittier imprint, Axe Traxx, to deliver a full package of seven rave-ready stompers. The Cease and Desist EP is the first 12” from Daniel Fisher’s Kirk The Flirt alias, and with the calibre of early support it boasts (Project Pablo, Fabio Monesi, xxxy, The Black Madonna, Pepe, Ethyl, Baltra) we’re crossing our fingers that it won’t be the last. Axe Traxx are well established purveyors of dancefloor fire. Previous hosts to the likes of Mall Grab, DJ Aakmael and Marlon Hoffstadt, the London based label have curated an enviable discography of unapologetically raw break-infused house. Kirk the Flirt has done an impressive job of keeping the fire burning, delivering an EP built for the party, one that is equally as nostalgic for the raves of the 90’s as it is excited by those of tomorrow.

Cease and Desist is an EP of impressive stylistic breadth– a testament to self-described “omnivore” Daniel Fisher and the colourful productions of his many personas. On the A-side, Kirk the Flirt reminds us of the effective simplicity of house music, with four feel-good club bangers. The music is stripped back and simple, but not at all reserved. It is music you can get silly to, without the constraints of a composition that feels too clean or too tight. In all, it proves yet again that a good beat, infectious vocals, and a few well-timed breaks are more than enough to tug on the heartstrings of crowds in both house parties and festivals alike.

Our premiere today is the hidden gem of the EP, sitting on the B side among a playful set of edits of the aptly named ‘Good Vibrations’. The B3, Good Vibrations (Physical Therapy Mini Dub), offers a deeper, more haze-dipped summer sound; the type of dubby house that’s sweeping the scene at the moment for all the right reasons. Physical Therapy’s slinky groove has a simple elegance to it: snatches of brushed snares, gleaming pads and dubby stabs draped nonchalantly over a 4/4 kick. This combination of production quality and emotional content is the perfect way to round off the EP with a wave of euphoria – one that we wish we could ride for longer.

This edition of our MIXED BY/ series is brought to you by not one but two Bolting Bits regulars, New York’s Baltra (soundcloud) and London’s Fede Lng (soundcloud). Both artists have had a breakout couple of years finding their places, either by design or by serendipity, as frontrunners in the lo-fi movement. Below, you’ll find some extra info on each artist and an interview with Axe on Wax bossman, Fede Lng.

Fede Lng has carved out a coveted spot as both curator and creator in the dusty depths of London’s music scene. Since their inception in 2014, Axe on Wax and its sub-labels have gone on to see releases from a who’s who list of recent stars including Mall Grab, Chaos in The CBD, Trudge, Deejay Astral, and Jesse Bru. With a penchant for rough and raw tracks chock-full of equal parts grit, dust, and feeling, Lng has found himself in the middle of a musical movement that shows no signs of slowing down and continues to defy expectations.

Across the Atlantic, New York’s Baltra has been not so quietly making a name for himself with great self-releases and stand out EPs on labels such as Lost Palms and Of Paradise, the Philidelphia-born artist’s music has served as a gateway drug for many of lo-fi’s biggest proponents. And while his aesthetic blends seamlessly into what we’ve come to expect from the scene, the emotions contained within the music easily transcend the genre or any doubts about its staying power.

INTERVIEW

Hey guys, thanks for the mix! Were there any specific feelings behind the selections?
Nothing planned about the mix, just played what i’m feeling atm + unreleased Axe On Wax

How would you describe your approach to DJing? Do you have any idols, past or present, that you look up to?
Yes i do have idols, they constantly change tho, like every couple years or so…. atm i’m into Funkineven, Fabio Monesi, Slyngshot and Shanti Celeste.

What came first for you, by the way, DJing or making music? What was it like getting started?
Started DJing a lil bit before i started using Ableton to be honest, that was around end of 2012. I remember downloading Ableton and being like WTF is this nerdy thing, looks scary… and now i’m all over it !

What are some of the tools and techniques you use to achieve the aesthetic you’re looking for in your music? Is there anything unusual about your workflow you want to share?
Well to achieve a warmer sound i use stuff like Reel2Reel Tape and Culture Vulture, or if i’m ‘in the box’ i like to use the Decapitator, not on everything but on most things for sure!

Is there such a thing as too much saturation?
Yes there is, i.m.o it’s ok when the track is analog & you really distort the shit out of it, like my track ‘XX’ or like ‘X’ by Delory Edwards and Funkineven, but when the track sounds digital and you use too much saturation it sounds really shitty!

It feels like more producers than ever are looking back in time when it comes to their music and where they look for inspiration, how do you feel your music fits into the musical timeline? Are we in a nostalgia bubble?
I feel like my music could sound like it was made in the 90s to a non experct ear, but most ppl ‘in the game’ can tell it’s not from back then, some US producers still sound like their stuff is from the 90s but i feel like now we moving into different vibes… more breaks, more acid, more clean basslines. I’m not into a nostalgic bubble, i feel like there is still music that is coming out now. Obvs there s a lot more producers now, so like 70/80% of the stuff that comes out everyweek is shit, but still if you dig deep u can find good stuff!

You’re obviously both big fans of vinyl, but how does streaming fit into your life both personally and as an artist/label owner?
I’m not too much into streaming servies yet, for now i stick to Soundcloud and Youtube to find/listen stuff.

A lot of people’s New Year’s resolutions may have fallen by the wayside but do you have any personal goals for 2018? Anything you’d like to achieve either musically or personally before the year’s end?
Well yeah there’s loads of places i’d like to go and play for the rest of 2018 at obvs but don’t want to push things too fast atm. I’m already happy to have secured a lil Japan Tour for April.

What feeds your inspiration outside the studio and away from the decks?
Taking pictures really inspires me. As wel as seeing documentaries on TV about musicians, places in the world or just simply design, artsy things, even clothes inspire me sometimes

Tell us about the most important record in your collection.
It’s hard to pin point a specific record to be honest. But probably my fabourite is Jazzmatazz Vol1 by Guru, that’s one of the best mixes of Hip-Hop culture with Jazz !

Anything forthcoming you can let us know about?
A great Ep on Axe On Wax by a new artist called Verner, prob my fa Ep on the labels so far! + one on Axe Traxx by Physical Therapy aka Kirk The Flirt + one ep from me w 2 really amazing remixes which i’m gonna keep secret for now.

PREMIERE : Deejay Astral – Duality [Who’s Susan]

With his shift to a more deeper sound in the past few years Deejay Astral (soundcloud) has crafted a dark and brooding style reminiscent of earlier house and techno. On “Duality” from his new Pack the Pipe split EP on the label Who’s Susan with Fede Lng, the Berlin based producer creates a moody atmosphere with elements from both the UK and German scenes. This evocative blend of different styles is a staple of the Dutch label which features other artists such as Axefield, Interplanetary Criminal and Rick Sheen. Established only in 2016 the future looks promising for the young collective. The label will release the split EP on January 15th both digitally and as a 12”.

On this premiere the bassline drifts and drifts across the track, leaving space for the warmth and pulse of the kick and hi-hats. Over time it loosens more and finds moments to fill the space in between other sounds with its depth. The main sample builds slowly with a tunnel reverb that bleeds out behind the drums and melodies while vinyl grooves and noise move in and out of the left and right channels of the stereo field. While the layering and sounds present interesting sonic palettes, it comes as no surprise from a DJ known to play with the likes of Baltra and Mall Grab.

All the while the main vocal sample slides in and around the other elements of the track. As is tradition within lo-fi house tracks the sample manages to evoke both somber and uplifting emotions all at once. It matches the brooding feel of the bassline while also reaching the heights of the main refrain. With subtle reverb giving it the sense of desperation and tension it cuts through the mix and compliments the songs main melodic presence. As he teases another drop at the end of the track you’re unsure of whether the person talking to themselves in the bathroom mirror made it out to conquer their adversity.

“Duality” is one of two tracks by Deejay Astral from the upcoming Pack the Pipe EP with Fede Lng. Out 1.15.18.

PREMIERE : Tape Hiss – Just Kids (Low Tape Remix) [Axe Traxx]

London based Axe On Wax Records (check out our interview with label-head Fede Lng) is back with another stellar release on the sublabel, Axe Traxx, which kicked off last year with a banging EP by Australian duo SONDERR, featuring a remix from Mall Grab. The limited-run, hand-stamped white label has put out several releases already, highlighting producers such as Trudge and RVL. Axe Traxx explores the lo-fi side of the Axe On Wax deep house sound (exemplified by the recent DJ Aakmael 12”, « Tales From The Deep Side »), with grainy percussion and darker melodic lines. The fifth release welcomes Tape Hiss (SoundCloud) to the Axe Traxx family with « L.A Tapes Ep. »The Brooklyn-by-way-of-San-Francisco producer has two stellar records out on Love Notes From Brooklyn (with a 2×12” slated for release in the coming weeks), which combine punchy bass lines with airy pads and synth melodies to create ethereal dance tracks. « L.A Tapes Ep » continues in this vein while embracing the grittier Axe Traxx sound with three emotive house burners, and a remix from Russian producer, Low Tape (SoundCloud).

‘Mercury’ opens the EP with an arpeggiated synth line that builds in complexity above a thumping kick and twangy bass. A2, ‘Music And The Spirit,’ begins with a beautiful ambient introduction that is gradually juxtaposed with dense, rhythmic percussion (especially those crunchy claps) and an acid bass line. The B-side features two versions of ‘Just Kids:’ the original, and a remix by Low Tape, which is our premiere today.

‘Just Kids’ is arguably Tape Hiss’ heaviest track on the record; the opening 2 minutes veer towards a darker, almost techno sound, which slowly blossoms into a driving house track with the addition of melodic synths. Low Tape ups the tempo on his remix, and adds percussion below the reverbed pads. The bass line takes centre stage, accompanied by fluttering, delayed claps and snare hits. Both tracks leave the listener with the echoing whisper, “I love you.”

PREMIERE : Fede LNG – XX [Axe Traxx 003]

For our 9th premiere we are excited to debut a track from the third release on Axe Traxx, sub-label of London-based Axe on Wax Records. The vinyl-only, hand stamped VA features distinct tracks from label owner Fede LNG, Kid Mark, Hamsa International’s DJ Pegasuz and FTPup and Russian duo Ruff & Stax.

After selling out their first two records, featuring artists such as Mall Grab, Die Roh and Sonderr and Trudge, Axe Traxx continue to expand their lo-fi catalogue, specializing in functional bottom heavy and effective house/techno crossover, with just enough melody to keep things memorable. With household names such as Fabio Monesi, Fred P, Ben Sims, Moodcut, Chaos in the CBD, Frits Wentink and more offering early support to the label, Axe Traxx has already earned its respect and deserves your attention.

The remarkable EP showcases the talent of each producer and slowly crescendos from the A1 to push the momentum forward until the last minutes of the B2. Ruff and Stax’s ‘Brando’ kicks things off with sultry bass and percs, gradually building anticipation and allure with its subtle jazzy chords and hazy spoken vocal samples – perfect for inviting hesitant dancers to get their feet moving. Kid Mark’s ‘Jam Brown’ features classic deep house chords but its jacking nature, deep bass and dense kick balance the dreamy nature with undeniable dance floor potential. DJ Pegasuz and FTPup keep the jazzy lo-fi vibe going but speed up the tempo for a simple and effective hazy banger.

Finally, we come to our premiere courtesy of Fede LNG – ‘XX’ takes a closer turn to techno territory with a relentless distorted kick, noisy hats and jagged claps.
