In November Rush Hour is set to release a suitably celebratory and carefully curated compilation from Amsterdam scene stalwarts Kamma & Masalo, named in honour of their day and night party in Amsterdam that’s been going since 2014, and their former Worldwide FM radio show, Brighter Days. Positivity abounds across the compilation which draws not only on the dustiest corners of their record collections, but also the duo’s stash of secret weapons, previously unreleased re-edits, and new productions from friends within Amsterdam’s bourgeoning scene. The three tracks presented here offer a suitably vivid snapshot of the collection’s enticing blend of tactile and colourful house, sunrise-ready workouts, soaring disco, basement-ready throb-jobs, inspired dancefloor dubs and righteous boogie jams.

There’s ‘Kamma & Masalo’s Radio Edit’ of Discotheque’s 1982 Dutch-Belgian disco classic ‘For Your Love’– a highlight of their and Antal’s DJ sets over the last 12 months – and their previously unreleased ‘Dub’ of French-Cameroonian artist Anyzette’s 1984 gem ‘Baladoun’, a low-slung slice of drum machine-rich body music that blurs the boundaries between Italo-disco, Afro-boogie and proto-techno. The inclusion of Peffa’s ‘Routine’ highlights the pair’s ongoing relationship with the little-known producer. He’s been supplying them with unreleased secret weapons for some time and ‘Routine’ – an immersive and emotive treat that blends elements of deep house and Detroit techno – is one of his very best.

This exclusive re-edit sees Freeride Millenium boss and respected DJ/producer Jorkes reinvent a cult gem from German language queer band, Rosenstolz. Rosenstolz were a Berlin duo operating through the 90s and 00s and this song, ’Sex Im Hotel’ brings together their sex positive attitude with a real feel for their political outlook. This is something that obviously resonates with Jorkes, a continual crusader for sexual and social positivity and a much loved face in Europe’s queer music scene. Jorkes’ Freeride Millenium label has been a beacon of quality music over recent years with contributions from the likes of Benjamin Frohlich, Hard Ton nd_baumecker, Rotciv and many more.

The imprint was also behind the charity compilation ‘Queer Base’ which was hugely critically acclaimed and raised money for the charity of the same name in Jorkes’ adopted home of Vienna. For this Rosenstolz remix, Jorkes twists up the original in sea of squelchy acidic lines, providing a perfect new sound-bed for the distinctive vocals of Rosenstolz’s AnNa R. It’s a delightful re-edit that is sure to get you on your feet! You can check this out here and head over to Jorkes’ Bandcamp page to download.

Eternal Love are a DJ duo based out of Milan. Experts in all things funk, disco, jazz and house – us at BB HQ have been keeping our eyes on these guys for a while. Their SoundCloud displays a plethora of mixes – including a residency at Rocket Radio – as well as a few party-ready edits they’ve done over the years.

Other than that though, there’s relatively little about these on the internet and something that gives us great pleasure here at BB HQ is shedding some light on the more underground acts. It’s rare when we host someone’s first ever interview – but when it does happen it’s always super special. We got to find out the story behind the duo for the first time in recorded internet history….here it is….

INTERVIEW

Hey guys, how’s it goin? What have you both been up to recently musically and non-musically?
Ciaoooo cavalli! First of all, thank you for having us on your amazing platform. Fortunately, we’ve been really busy recently. We’ve finally managed to get some gigs after the never-ending pandemic stopped, so the past few weeks were all about travelling from country to country and spinning music across Europe – exactly what we have been dreaming of doing for the past two and a half years. Plus, during the pandemic we also gotinto production a bit so we are also spending a lot of our time in the studio.

Tell us about the track selections you’ve made for us. What was the inspiration/idea behind the selections?
We’ve always been super into the deep selector/ nerdy scene, and it’s always stressful making mixes only with music no one knows about. I think the pandemic made us realise that – to semi-cite one of our all time favourites aka mr. Marcellus Pittman – our job is not about the rare and expensive records but about GOOD MUSIC. We think this idea is reflected in the whole mix which basically consists of a lot of the songs we played out over this past summer. We didn’t really care about how rare and obscure the tracks are. The mix reflects our need to start dancing again and hugging and kissing and vibing and all those stuffs we used to do before the lockdown.

How did you both get started in music? Did you always work together? Give us the back story.
Actually we haven’t known each other for ages. We got to know each other around 5 years ago. At the time we were both working on our own personal projects. Fede was more into the disco stuff and I (Edo) was really into weird Japanese jazz funk vibes. We were both following and listening to the music of the other and at some point we decided to meet. We had quite a lot of beers (as always) and a great tropical music session. At the time I was living in Maastricht (NL) and I invited Fede to play there. It was a magic night because we felt super connected through the music. Afterwards we started hanging out together more often and decided to start a YouTube channel to share some of the obscure jams we had collected over the years. Courtesy of the YouTube channel we started to get more attention from promoters who started to book us as a “duo” and here we are …co-writing an interview hahaha

What artists/genres do you draw inspiration from?
Ahh there are many DJs and artists in general from whom we take inspiration. Definitely all the DJs from the US scene. As we already said, Marcellus Pittman is a huge one for us. We’ve always said that if either of us ever gets married we have to book him! He’s amazing. He doesn’t give a shit and he could make anyone dance – even your grandma or your 16yo depressed cousin.

Could you share one of your favourite new musical discoveries over lockdown?

OriGeenal M

This YT channel full of rare g-funk & hip hop gems cuddled us a lot during first lockdown

Could you talk us through your DJ sets? What’s the vibe you go for? What are you both thinking about when you’re looking for the next track to play? How do you DJ cohesively as a duo?
DJing as a duo can be really difficult. Even though we have a super strong connection, it’s impossible to always be in the exact same mood and feel the dancefloor in the same way. However, when it does happen, it usually ends up being one of the best nights of our life. We have one super strict rule: Don’t touch or adjust the mixing while the other is changing the song. Following this rule saves us from many arguments.

How do you organise your music for gigs?
Usually we meet before the weekend and we talkabout the parties we’re gonna play, trying to imagine what it’s gonna be like and what kind of vibe we wanna bring. We show each other a couple of new songs and then we start ripping the records (we are too poor to have the luxury of checked-in luggage). Then we have two different usbs or record bags and we go with the flowwww. Most of the time we end up playing completely different stuff to what we originally planned but I guess that’s the best part of DJing…

What’s one track you’re dying to play out at a gig?

Other than music, what else are you both into? Do you have jobs/hobbies?
Apart from music, unfortunately, we both have day jobs to pay the bills. We hope that after this interview we’ll become super famous and will be able to ask 5k for a DJ set – then we could quit our jobs. As you can see from our bellies we also really love to eat (of course only “regional food”, as our tech rider states) and drink: In particular expensive champagne like Krug, Dom Perignon and those kind of juices to be opened “sciabolando” obviously. In regards to hobbies, Edo will never admit to it but he is a huge football fan and very bad tennis player. I (Fede) am a trash tv program addict and I love cooking.

Any underrated talent out there you think you should mention? Or anyone else who deserves a shoutout?
Ushhh so many people to shout out. There are so many good talents out there. GHF for example, a crazy French producer duo (we love you Pierre) who also provided us with some of the music in this mix! Also, thinking about the Milan scene, we are big fan boyz of our brother Gabriele (Sunny Cript) with whom we share not only our anxiety and life struggles but also a lot of amazing records. Ferrari is also one to keep an eye on in regards to his productions: he is always cooking up amazing music and we are both sure he’s gonna rock soon on some big labels. Moving on to the already established ones, we cannot avoid mentioning our habibi Dar Disku (with whom we are working on a crazy collaboration – more info soooooon) and Alia (we are big big fanssss of her) who we met in Puglia this summer and we hope to meet again soon. Last but not least, our Australian dad and boss of Planet Trip, Mike Who, who (hahaha) is not only one of our favorite djs out there but has also been our first supporter since day one. Grazie Mike we love you xxxxxxx

Finally, what’s next for Eternal Love!?
Talking about Mike, Planet Trip and our future plans… you should definitely put the release of our first EP on Planet Trip in your calendars, scheduled for February. We also have another track going out on a VA, compiled by us on the Polifonic Label which is gonna be released in the first part of next year and is gonna be sickkkk (super names in it but shhhhhhh). DJing-wise we have some gigs planned and we really hope to go back to our favourite place on earth aka Brazil in the next year to dig, eat and visit our friends there.

Paris’ crew Pompelope releases its first compilation the 16th of April : Foule Contact is about freeing ourselves from barriers and finding ourselves together, through music in its more profound way. Going from the virtual world to real-life and connect all together in each and every one of those tracks. Foule Contact is the idea that the current atmosphere won’t last forever, and that we already expect our reunion, cradled with tenderness and all the energy accumulated over the last few months.

This compilation is about 15 eclectic and danceable tracks. Gathering a broad spectrum of genres, from House to Italo-Disco, Afro cosmic or Leftfield.

The Milan-based duo Eternal Love, delivers a great edit of a track unearthed from a 1987 slasher movie. As a result, a Hi-NRG catching anthem with a heady chorus.

It’s a pleasure to talk to you today Pete. On The Corner Records is more than just a label. You represent cultures and sounds from across the globe and these times of unrest and division you are a beacon of hope and compassion. Label of The Year at WWFM Awards 2018, respected by many including Gilles Peterson. That is a truly remarkable stamp to have.

INTERVIEW

Your music comes from all over the world, in far reaching places. Can you tell us where you are from? Where are you based?
I’m based in Stoke Newington; I’ve been fairly nomadic over the last 20 years. Mostly in South East London but now North. Originally, I’m from a village a few miles away from Ashby de la Zouch (its where a lot of pub snack and Adrian Mole comes from)

Have you always lived in the UK or did you spend time growing up in some of the countries you represent musically?
Mostly UK, I built myself the privilege of being able to take a year exploring street corner vibes in various part of Africa. Linking up places I’d been on shorter trips but and having a bit of a beat odyssey. I’ve had extended stays in the Moroccan end of the western Sahara and a decent run out East on the island of Zanzibar.

How did the label On the Corner Records begin?
From a night really. I was living central, doing a bit of online radio and crashing my career. I used my overdraft to put out a dark white label featuring Emanative, Rocketnumbernine, Earl zinger and Collocutor. The night was the summer of 2013 and not much was really happening, and I wanted a space to play Theo Parrish, Albert Ayler, L.I.E.S and all that jazz.

Did you start with a specific music policy in mind? What was your first release on the label?
Not really, I wanted to support music that banged, that I loved and was not being picked up. That’s not changed really, I’m loving looking for artists that push their own boundaries. The first white label style 12” release was the OVER EP featuring Emanative’s remix of Collocutor and then the dark, odd ball, cosmic electronic title track. I hand stamped and screen printed those 12s and I’ve still got a few white labels kicking around somewhere!!! OtCRLP001, Collocutor’s ‘Instead’ in October 2014 was the first full release nipping in ahead of the resurgence in UK Jazz.

Collocutor – Instead (Emanative Remix)

Would you say that the musical vision you began with is still in place? Has this changed?
I think it’s still developing, there’s lots of sound and artists I want to work with. Innovating with future bangers whilst keeping rhythmic roots upfront will always require vision, hard work and innovative campaigns to bring the artists to an audience they deserve.

How do find artists for the label? Do you travel to discover sounds?
I do travel but I don’t go out seeking to uncover bands in that way as it’s for DJing mostly (I’m almost missing Stanstead right now). Some music comes from long time connections. Often, I’ll be sent music, hear it on the shelves or it will come recommended by fellow DJs or artists.

Tell us about someone you met on your travels which lead to them appearing on the label? Bet there are many great stories!
There are plenty of stories! The Santuri release came about from dredging my Traktor around Zanzibar. David Tinning was yet to begin the East African electronic music collective Santuri and I was just there to write about and play music. We shared lots of the local spirit, Konyagi and remained in touch as we both developed our own initiatives. On another occasion I can tell you about being bounced off a flight in Uganda and being arrested for murdering a police! At the end of an interview last year I was asked at the end to clear up a rumour that I’d been kidnapped. It made me laugh but then I realise stories do turn into myths and I had ended up in a military compound in the Sahara on a couple of occasions and another time I just managed to get out of Timbuctu before it fell to the Sahelian Al Qaeda, that was definitely a situation I’d like to avoid happening again.

Santuri Safari – M.I.X.G Jinja Pearls (Sam Jones construct)

https://youtu.be/op2XWCuGPSIVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Santuri – Jinja Pearls (Sam Jones Construct) (https://youtu.be/op2XWCuGPSI)

As a DJ, how would you describe your style of music when you play out?
Hang on, let me just check my bio. It’s a good times rave up. Big grooves, a few unknown weapons, unrealised unreleased fire and plenty of kick. Reacting to the room or festival is important so bringing the dancers on board and getting that backroom sweating.

Are you also a producer?
I’m not at the controls though my input ranges from giving the thumbs up, making tweaks or imbibing the vibe.

Do you still buy records? Are you precious about what format you play?
For sure I do, when I travel, I try to pack smarter but USBs are a welcome edition and lighten the load. Sometimes the only option is to play from the Mac but that’s only when I absolutely have to. Short run white labels and unreleased label gear are essential to keeping a deeper connection to future sounds and evolving myself. Digital can add vast amounts of agility but if that’s all I’m working from then it becomes a bit two dimensional.

Is there a secret spot in some far-flung country you go to for precious gems?

Everyone is online now; I mean unless you really want me to bang on about CD shacks selling bootleg MP3s in Bobo Dioulasso (Burkina Faso). The guy rips the hottest cuts from the streets of Abidjan while you wait. Props to Sofa records in Lyon and 33 Revoluciones in Las Palmas. There are a few places popping up in Morocco with small but interesting collections. I still rely on SoTU, Phonica and Bandcamp.

What’s your favourite On the Corner release, why is that?
Your only as good as your last game, right? Siti Muharam – Siti of Unguja is just out and it’s an incredible work that started with me being a cultural consultant for a pioneering housing development on Zanzibar. I brought the concept to the table and that spiralled into a remarkable recording which I had to release. Sam Jones was at the controls and it’s been three years of hard cross-continent team work realising what I think is a significant record for the musicians, the label and Zanzibar.

Siti Muharam

https://youtu.be/OkZpA2B5FfAVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Mashozi Ya Huba (https://youtu.be/OkZpA2B5FfA)

With the global pandemic, the horizon has changed for all of us. How has it changed for you? Are you concerned about the label? Are you continuing with your release plans for 2020?
The festival season has obviously gone, it made me realise I’m going to need an extra pair of hands when that is resurrected. I am concerned for the label, of course, until very recently, without DJ income, the label wouldn’t of survived so the timing for us could have been worse, luckily I’d diversified and built in a few months resilience. We’ve releases dropping now and with stores gradually opening my fingers are crossed. The Guedra Guedra debut EP was scheduled for festival season but it sold out anyway. Other releases may be impacted though. Nov 2021 is looking worrying and the coming winter could be tough but we’ll try to adapt. The state of the global economy may take choices out of our hands.

With the recent unrest in the USA after the tragic killing of George Floyd, and OTC being a label that is huge supporter of equality by nature of the music you support and nurture, what is your message?
Black Lives Matter: I feel there’s a great opportunity for us as allies to confront our own prejudice, examine our history and how the fabric of society is unequal, prejudicial and out-and-out dangerous. As a label I feel we have an artistic family across the globe. Black history, people and culture matters. Being in the cultural industries is easy to show the influence of black art and music without addressing the reality affecting the artists, their families and their people. There’s lots of voices out there that can guide you to a better understanding of the reality affecting people different to yourself. I recommend following nowhitesaviours on insta and artists like Saul Williams, BLM UK, Big Joanie. Now is the time for change and it’s our fight to take forward under the guidance of and for, black people. No one is exempt, we all need to understand privileges, history and sub-conscious bias. I’m racist until society is not and that when structural there is true inequality is addressed.

Can you tell us a little about your forthcoming release Door To The Cosmos Volume 1?
So it’s a dancefloor sampler ahead of a triple vinyl compilation due to drop on Sept 11th. The artwork from Victoria topping is a cosmic heart attack and the music comes from a raft of new label artists, some guest and the OtC old guard. It represents artist all knocking at the door to the cosmos loosely in the vein of Sun Ra’s mantra. Its the sound of undergrounds popping On the Corner across our cosmos.

It’s such a varied sampler. What is the common theme that connects the tracks for you?
That they all bang, push borders of genre and present fresh ideas. Not everyone is going to be ready but that’s where the thrill comes in.

Is there anyone in the music industry that you admire right now? Who’s hot?
There’s a pretty expansive list, dumama + kechou debut is stunning, Shabaka and the Ancestors, Moses Boyd, Emma-Jean Thackray, BCUC, Saul Williams continue to roll stronger and stronger. I can’t wait to hear more from Tom of England, DJ Sotofett, Azu Tiwaline, Bergsonist and Bakongo.

Some call you the nicest man in music, is this true?
Nah mate, I’ve got a ‘shit list’. If you’re an exploiter, cock womble, creep or come with the attitude then you’re on the list and then I won’t work or associate with you. OtC is a family and I’m protective where I need to be. Having a vision and being trusted with artists work brings a the responsibility for and it means that sometimes you have to break eggs, chase invoices, give it the hard ‘no’, cut out the mediocre and let it go to pasture out of view.

What’s up next for Pete On The Corner?
Keep on with the back room raving. My Ibiza, U.S. and Boomtown debuts were cancelled due to Covid, but I’ve been hard at the label, literally round the clock for lockdown. I can’t wait to get the party going and I need to cut loose. I’m going to enjoy myself, rave and rest and then a good deal more of both, thanks for the chat and support!

From party people with shoulder pads, big hair, white Rolls-Royces, panama hats, the Fragrant Harbour that is Hong Kong had a very unique Hotel / Clubbing scene before places like DD’s, Canton Disco and Hot Gossip opened their doors. These Discotheques were a place of creativity, panache and mischief of the era. They were all destinations of desire. For this release and in celebration of the Chinese New Year, we have Hong Kong raised producer RFX on duty for 4 edits and guest producer Midnight Runners with a house heat edit for some Dim Sum Disco sessions to bring you back to a time where Hong Kong was getting down in clubs.

This Canto Club release will clearly not be the last one as years of digging will make Canto flourish to the world. Order now on Fauve’s Bandcamp.

Brasilian DJ and producer Rafael Cancian delivers a veritable United Nations of diverse international disco flavor for his first outing on Razor-N-Tape. The A side delivers cheeky horns and gyrating synths with Ç’est La Douceur, followed by a flurry of string stabs and vocal fourishes with theI Italo-tinged Fascino Di Milano.

On the flip we get a taste of Rafa’s native Brasilian boogie with the stomping Frágil, and the EP winds down with the sensual slow groover Besos Libres. This is a 4-tracker of serious heat representing all four romance languages…perfect for romancing, and dancing! Buy it now!

Justin Jay and crew are sailing around the world and back for the debut of Fantastic Wax, a new vinyl-only offshoot of Fantastic Voyage. For the inaugural release, they’ve tapped international man of music Romain FX.

Following up his Tasty Edits EP on Fantastic Voyage last December, the Hong Kong-based DJ, party promoter, and radio host has reworked four hard-to-find African cuts in hopes of giving them a second life. Informed by over a decade of experience playing DJ sets across the globe, all four tracks have been edited and remixed to fit nicely into your rotation.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-gambian-neptune-rfx-edit” /]

On deck for our premiere is Gambian Neptune, a track that sails strongly from the onset with a moody melody, spaced out drums and an epic vocal. Arranged (or perhaps rearranged) for maximum effect, RFX navigates us past the intro into a variety of catchy riffs and breakdowns while regularly returning to the vocal hook that ties the song together.

True to the label’s founding principles of friendship, fun, and freedom, Fantastic Wax 001 is an exciting dive into music unknown that’s set to make waves in the crowded sea of vinyl edits. Check out all four tracks when the record ships August 26th.
