Time to welcome back Argentinian producer Manuel Sahagun to Freerange for his follow up to his brilliant 2019 release Awake. Manuel has been putting out quality house music since the early 2000’s and has released tunes on Berlin’s Tooman, UK’s Drop, and Detroit’s Kolour as well as remixing legends such as Warren ‘Hanna’ Harris, Robert Owens and Patrick Chardronnet. He brings a freshness and eclecticism to his productions that fits in perfectly with the Freerange ethos of forward-thinking house music loaded with warmth, bumping grooves and a touch of soul.

The three tracks on offer here range from the acid-tinged, 707 driven ‘Body’ through shuffled, Detroit-inspired groove of ‘Move’ and closing out on the slow-mo blissed-out Balearic mood on ‘Ritmo Pandemico’. Some great new music to keep your discerning dance floors bouncing to!

Madrid, Malmø, Motor City – the places that influenced the sound behind the pure Electro EP, “M-Technology“. The fifth SNC Recs release fuses elements from very different cities from all around the world.

The musician Dip Shim aka. Diego Ocejo unites on “M-Technology“ the Sounds of Detroit, his roots in Spain, and the current scene of Sweden. Dip Shim has many talents; in his formative years, he was active in the Graffiti scene and working as a graphic designer. Turning his lifestyle into education, he moved to Malmø, getting lost within the city’s artistic bubble. It was within this creative environment, that Dip Shim found a place to start a new project. Since 2020 he runs the record store called „Bolero Record-Store“ and started his own label “Malmø Traxx“. One thing is for sure – he knows what he’s doing. By the way, Dip Shims’ first release on his own imprint was a top seller on Juno and sold out after only two weeks.

“M-Technology” is for sure the perfect soundtrack for your favorite Graffiti Film or a rave night that will hopefully take place soonish. With his full analogue producing style, using legendary equipment like the MPC2000 and a selection of classic Roland drum machines, Diego created an outstanding 4 track, full Electro EP which will probably heat up a lot of Dancefloors in the near future.

Montreal-based newcomer ‘JULES’ makes his mark on the electronic music scene with his debut release; ‘DELTA AJAX’, out now on Happy Life. This versatile EP blends elements of Electro, House, Breakbeats, and UK Garage, revealing the many facets of ‘JULES’ as an artist. ‘DELTA AJAX’, is inspired by Frank Hebert’s 1965 science-fiction novel ‘Dune’, and the crossover is abundantly apparent once you get into the lead track from the EP.

‘TOUT À FAIT’ opens with a calming, stripped back vibe; Detroit-esque pads enter, laying the foundations that the track resolves around throughout its entirety. As the track builds, these flowing pads are accompanied by hazy hi-hats that cut through with almost paradoxical effect. A warm, full-bodied bassline drives the track forward as it steps up a gear, intertwined with a hypnotic brass hook that circles in and out. ‘JULES’ demonstrates how a simplistic approach, using only a handful of carefully curated key elements, can have a massive impact on the end result.

To most, the name Maarten Smeets is synonymous with ‘Dam Swindle’, the duo that have been dominating the underground electronic music landscape over the past decade. However, over the past 12 months, Maarten has been exploring a more adventurous and refined sound under his solo project ‘Wanderist’.

Fresh from his second release on the mighty AUS, we caught up with him as part of the Bolting Bits ‘Mixed By’ series…

INTERVIEW

Thanks for taking the time to talk with us Maarten! I guess we’re all still in somewhat of a strange place, but how are things with you right now?
Well, after more than a year of life with Covid, I’m not sure it’s strange anymore. It’s just different. A new reality we’re all dealing with in our own way. I’m ok and even though the virus really changed the practical way my life was organized in terms of touring, it has also given me loads of new creative opportunities and life lessons in general. For the first time in almost 10 years, I actually have a properly functioning biorhythm and the time to do more with my family than just have dinner and do the basics. So even though this was not actively my choice, I’m really happy with where I’m at right now.

You’ve put out 2 releases to date under the ‘Wanderist’ alias; have you been working on the project behind the scenes for a while or is it something that you’ve only recently conceived?
The idea to start a solo project had been on my mind for a long time. Every once in a while’, I’d make a sketch that would be too hard or electronic for me to put out as Dam Swindle and I noticed myself struggling at times to fit some of my ideas into the mold of a DS track. When I decided to release music as Wanderist, things really fell into place and I suddenly had a long list of sketches to work out for my first releases. There’s still a lot I’ve got to revisit from my older sketches, but that dreamy / dubby electro and techno has really become my thing. It also made things easier for my work as part of Dam Swindle, where I really enjoy the interaction I have with Lars and that live / funk approach to house music.

The ‘Translucid Dreams’ EP that recently dropped on AUS is bubbling with nostalgic elements that throwback to the early days of electronic music. Is this a period that you have admiration for and take inspiration from?
I get that it sounds nostalgic, but it was never intended to be like that. This is just the music that comes up when I head into the studio, so It might be my age, my experience (or lack of) or something else. It could also be a workflow and technique thing that gives this feeling of nostalgia. I work in quite a stripped back way, use a lot of old synths and drums along with the samples I either record from field recordings, or find on old records so I guess that already does a lot for my sound. It also has a lot to do with mixing, where I seem to take an approach that connects my sound to the early days of electronic music. I like the clarity and straightforwardness in those mixes. Some of the best tracks I know are very basic in their mixing and that bluntness can sometimes be really compelling.

Does your approach differ in the studio when working alone as opposed to when you are working as a duo?
I think the biggest difference is in the conversations we have as a duo and the no- compromise direction I get to take as a solo artist. When I’m working as Wanderist, I get to explore every route that I see fit and make decisions purely based on what I want to do. It feels great to be able to produce music like that and I think this process is vital for me as an artist right now. Having both outlets for music means I get to have total creative control on the one end, as well as build on the interaction with my partner and create something that’s bigger than me on the other end.

What impact do you think Covid-19 has had on your creativity? Are you enjoying having more time to focus on writing in the studio?
I’ve been quite creative, although I’ve also had to more office work to do for the labels among others which meant less studio time than I’d normally have. The most important thing I’ve noticed is how much the mind benefits from a well rested and healthy body. In that sense, not DJ’ing for a while has given some interesting insights into how I work best and it will definitely impact the decisions I make when we’re heading back into the club.

Can you give us an insight into some of the artists out there that really inspired you at the beginning of your career, and are there any emerging artists out there that are really doing it for you right now?
One of the big inspirations for me as Wanderist is the legendary Detroit outfit Scan7. Their music has done a lot for me from both a house, as well as an electro – techno perspective. The purity of the sound, the brilliant simplicity in some of their tracks and the profound message really resonated with me. We’ve had the opportunity to work with them last year on our label Heist and I’m super proud to have them featured on the second release of my new label Transient Nature with an amazing electro EP that really breathes that classic Detroit sound.

On the other end, I’m also a huge fan of Forest Drive West with his dub approach to modern electronic music. Overmono is also a group I’m a huge fan of. Their UK techno sound is just so fresh and very recognizable, which I think is one the most important qualities you can have these days. My most recent connection and musical friendship is with the guys from Black Cadmium. They’ve been around for a while, but this project is really taking off. Their recent release on Violet’s label Naive is amazing and we’re now working on a release together for Transient Nature which is gonna full of that high energy tech sound they’ve been showcasing over the last years.

I’m also really into all the output on Central Processing Unit and Cultivated electronics. Their contemporary take on electro and the way they showcase it is amazing and they’re both real gems for the scene. I could go on forever with this, which is a good thing: there’s a lot of great music out the waiting to get heard.

You’re stranded on a desert island, and can only take 1 record, 1 piece of studio gear, and 1 other artist to collaborate with. What are your choices and why?
I’d take the Korg Monopoly, just because it’s such an amazing machine that can do lush chords, bleepy arpeggios, boomy basslines, and everything in between. Then, I’d ask Yussef Dayes to come along and bring his drum kit and I’d take Herbie Hancock’s album Sextant. It’s full of bleepy outer space ambient jazz that I could listen to over and over again, or just use some improvised Island style sticky tape to create loops and I’d have everything I need to produce a record that’s 100% Wanderist: spaced out jazz meets electro on a tropical island. I’m liking it already.

Where does the ‘Wanderist’ project go next? Are we likely to see you playing gigs sometime in the near future, and what is on the horizon regarding your release schedule?
I’ve got some more music coming up this year, with a remix for Cinthie’s track City Lights coming up in June on Aus, and a track on a compilation for this amazing Dutch boutique label called SoHaSo (Something Happening Somewhere). Then, end of the year, I’ll have a release on Transient Nature that goes from warm electro, to dub-meets-jazz techno to ambient with my friend and amazing Trumpet player Bo Floor from Jungle by Night. I’m

sure there will be some gigs at some point and I’m looking forward to that just as much as I am to get back into the studio to produce my next record.

Thanks for taking the time to chat to us! Just one final question; what direction are you going to be taking the listeners in the mix that you have put together for us?
For this mix, I’ve put together a lot of the different styles that I am influenced by as Wanderist and have tried to blend it all in a compelling 1 hour (and a bit) story. So we’re going from dub techno to trippy electro to full techno with a lot of music by people I feel deserve a bigger audience like Jordan GCZ, Dukwa and Black Cadmium as well as a sneak peak of the new Scan7 record on Transient Nature which will come out in June. The final track is my upcoming remix for Cinthie on Aus Music.

Rhythm Section’s darker livery, International Black, delivers its singular offering for 2020, an EP by suzerain of the unstoppable loop: Alex Falk.

His second EP for the label INTLBLK008 consists of 5 ruthless techno pieces of isometric quality scoured from a shortlist of over 100 drafts from Falk’s hard drive. The tracks were formed via experimentation with both the Korg Mono-Poly and in Alex’s words ‘manipulations of my own voice in my typically loopy style’.

The results are flashbacks to the formative forest parties that allow Falk to conjure a mind-expanding style of repetitive techno designed for long seamless transitions and loophole fanatics. Tried and tested at the TEKNOX party that he runs with Nikki Nair, Dialectic Sines and Saint Thomas Ledoux in Knoxville, Bronze, Needs and City Scan stand out as the heavier workouts while Blue Jellies and Fuchsia are trips into the cerebral cortex destined for the deepest after hours experience.

Alex Falk’s specialist voice in techno, sitting somewhere between your ice-cold Berlin and warm upfront Detroit sound, is worth its own weight in the DJ’s toolbox.

Born in Hamburg and living in Berlin, Lukas Oppenheimer gives us the ‘His Dream’ EP on Suol Recordings. Kicking off with the title track, which takes matters into somewhat experimental territory, while still providing ample sustenance for a tripped-out dance – perhaps on a sunny day in Berlin, with trees swaying lazily in the background as you delve deep into all of those weird and wonderful sounds and that irresistible bass line moves your feet.

‘Where You Been’ centres its rhythm around an intricate melodic percussion motif played on tuned wood blocks. Straight kicks are at the heart of a Detroitesque groove that sets its sights squarely on the dance floor, with floating strings and a lead line reminiscent of Underground Resistance at its best.

The last of the originals is ‘Forever Oceanside’. With its dreamy soundscape, lush analogue chords and a shaker slowly emerging, it’s a great set opener. Opting for a breakbeat pattern on the kicks and short, crisp snares, the tracks builds with little melodies, reverbed percussions and a warm bass line, with freshsonic details providing extra entertainment.

Rounding off the EP, we have Nachtbraker (Dutch for night hawk) on remix duties, who works his trademark dubtastic magic on ‘Where You Been’.

Placebo Palace is Eddie’s first solo dance EP, combining all of this experience into a diverse offering for discerning dance floors. The EP leads with “Que Locos”, a tropical house banger driven by brass and Latin-Jazz piano. “Baby Girl” rounds out the A side, with a dusty R&B vocal sample coupled with a massive and unexpected bassline. The B side is darker and deeper, starting with the frantic Afro-Jazz-Deep House “Sunday Palaver” that we have featured today. Closing the EP is “Bottle Rocket”, a psychedelic surf rock-tinged disco-not-disco chugger, with live guitar by Daniel Monk and electric bass by stphn-b.

It appears that copies of this EP are flying fast! Placebo Palace is set to hit stores January 14th and you can pre-order the record via bandcamp.

London-based Quintessentials continues to chug along. After their 10 year anniversary and impressive 60th release, they’ve already gone on to release two more EPs with the third one on the way now. Stepping up to the plate this time is NY*AK. The Newcastle-based hardware guru already has an impressive resume of releases under his belt on labels such as Local Talk, Phonica’s Karakul and Ninja Tune’s Techinicolour imprints. The Vice EP on Quintessentials is another strong outing, featuring everything from sultry vocals on the A1 ‘After the Sun’ to deep and raw Detroit grooves on the title track ‘Vice’.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-nyak-onions-ft-mark-hand” /]
This is a truly versatile EP and today we’re happy to be premiering the B2 track ‘Onions’ featuring collaborator Mark Hand, who also played keys on NY*AK’s track Shadow which was released on Technicolour. Mellow keys and a deep bass are joined by some funky guitar licks as the track gets under way. The percussion continues to build up as a synth lead joins the fray. Onions continues to slowly develop until looped vocals and off-kilter keys take over, flipping it into a bit of a deeper jam and pleasantly surprising us with the juxtaposed moods. This one gets our seal of approval and the rest of the EP is no slouch either. You can already pre-order your copy at various shops as the record is set to be out on February 8th.

About a year and a half ago we had the pleasure of introducing you to Blair French and his fantastic debut on Rocksteady Disco, Standing Still Is An Illusion, by far one of our favourite records of 2017. We also had the pleasure of premiering Public Park from his follow-up record earlier this year. Although an already accomplished producer, Standing Still was the first time Blair produced under this alias and was also the first time he produced a dance record. What a debut.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/blair-french-standing-still-is-an-illusion-bamboozle-aka-eli-soul-clap-remix” /]
Fast forwarding to today, Standing Still Is An Illusion has gotten the remix treatment, and let us tell you, it is quite the package. Featuring remixes from both Aroop Roy and Topher Horn, another Rocksteady Disco regular, it already sounds like a hit. But, we’ve got another first for you. Eli, from a duo you may have heard of called Soul Clap, is also on the bill. His debut release as Bamboozle just so happens to be a remix of Blair’s debut. When we first heard the news, we thought that there was no way this recipe could be screwed up and boy were we ever right.

Upping the tempo, Bamboozle takes an already percussion-filled track to the next level. In the first half we have the original’s warm chords and vocals paired with complimentary swelling synths and an upbeat, muted cowbell rhythm. The break takes us into a percussive boogie down until the second half of the track where it takes a deeper turn. Tasty pads and the re-worked rubbery bassline carry this one into late night territory. With the stellar ears of Pontchartrain on mixing duties, it gives it that much extra sheen. Just like the original, the Bamboozle remix is a whole journey within a single track. Bolting Bits stamp of approval. Get your copy here as the release is out now!

Today marks a special moment in Bolting Bits history for us. We are now lucky enough to premiere a track from our very own – Igor Bezuglov! For those that do not know, Igor is one of the major pieces that keep our music blog running behind the scenes. But being a man of many talents, he has been working on his own productions the past few months to deliver us his first tune under his alias Igor B.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-igor-b-ponteio” /]

Titled Ponteio (which means “bridge” in Portuguese), this song is the A-side of Igor’s debut record Águas de Setembro that is set to come out on Peter Croce and Moonlighter’s Detroit imprint Rocksteady Disco later this month. Throughout the piece, Igor utilizes the Brazilian original’s rolling bassline, impromptu instrumentation, and bittersweet vocals to capture what everyone’s feeling this time of year. Although many of us understand that cold months lay ahead, we are also eager to keep the good times going no matter what – and it’s this palpable optimism that makes the song the perfect soundtrack as we transition from summer into autumn across the northern hemisphere.

To get yourself a copy of this record, make sure to pre-order it by clicking here.
