It’s no secret that Bari-based Italian house label Cosmic Rhythm is one of our recurring favourites. After numerous top releases over the past three years, one of the mainstays of the label, Cosmic Garden, returns with CRM14: Promise of the Sun, maintaining the high standards they have set. Producing under various aliases, a lot of the output of this Italian label can be traced back to Cosmic Garden, a producer with many aspects to his sound.

In a similar vein to the deep cuts we’ve become accustomed to from the label, Promise of the Sun features 3 funky, jazzy house cuts – solid grooves with a more relaxed feel than some of Cosmic Rhythm’s earlier output.

On the title track, droning, hazy pads float in and out as a funky lead builds. Chicago legend Glenn Underground uses these elements to great effect in his remix on the B Side, crafting a track that wouldn’t seem out of place on his own catalog from back in the day. His remix is the standout, but the entire record cruises by smoothly. Summer may be coming to an end, but this release still evokes the feel of a pool party, free of all worries.

Harvey Touch is the solo project of Barcelona-based artist Javi Toca, who started his career at the beginning of 2015 seeking to create a name for himself at the intermediate point between the raw sound of synthesizers and the warmth of sampling methods.

After a few years of dropping tunes like Changes, Warm by your side, or his recent EP “Astral Patterns” with the Lebanese label Feedasoul, Harvey now comes with his first self-edited record “Archipiélago.”

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-harvey-touch-the-wanderer” /]

The original we are sharing with you today is taken from Harvey’s forthcoming LP, and it’s titled The Wanderer. The song begins with melodic drones from a sitar, which act as a tranquil introduction to the heart and soul of the piece – the vocal. Being one of the most memorable and emotive samples we’ve heard in recent memory, it’s hard not to get teary-eyed by its beauty upon first listen. Although we are unable to make out the message contained within its powerful mystique, the female’s voice immediately commands your attention as you eagerly await what’s to happen next…and then just like that, the warm strumming of bass and angelic strings cut the tension like butter and overwhelm the track with an all-encompassing sense of optimism and playfulness. It’s honestly very difficult not to have a more positive outlook than the one you had before listening to such a hopeful arrangement of melodies. I will certainly have this one queued up in my personal playlist if I ever need a pick-me-up during the upcoming days, and you should too!

To get your copy of The Wanderer and the rest of Harvey’s debut, make sure to pre-order yours here. It is set for release on March 21st.

GALACTIC FUNK. There is no better description for this sultry hip hop groove. The stirring harmonies, relaxing energy and soulful melodies created by the brilliant DJ Spinna, take you on a magically meditative trip around the Morning Sun.

Who better to release this futuristic hip hop delight than the wax-loving forward-thinking Bastard Jazz Recordings. Always fresh and boasting phenomenal creativity, the independent Brooklyn-based label, strive to work only with expressive producers that they genuinely vibe with. It’s clear to see how Bastard Jazz have been running for over 15 years, teaming up with fellow visionaries: Illa J (personal favourite), Kid Loco, Captain Planet, Brit Manor and Lord Echo, all of whom make up the impressive roster, plus many more. This is why you will be hearing ‘Morning Sun’ for a long time – it’s come from a genuine marriage of talented artists and an unmatched devoted label.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/morning-sun-feat-nannab-dj-spinna-remix” /]
As a lover of poetry and as an observer of all things lyrical, the vocals by the amazing Nanna G, are perfectly suited to the dreamy beat and twinkling keys. The mix holds on to the raw emotion of a Potatohead People garage jam. Spinna applies his magic touch and makes an already magnificent track….even better.

Yes, the beat is addictively funky. Yes, I feel untouchable listening to it. Yes, I feel like hanging out of a cadalac straight chillin, boppin my head to this groove. It is undeniable that this track will have you feeling. In true Potatohead People fashion, the tune is uplifting, that is where the beauty lies. You’ll be left with so much long after the tune is done.

Bordello A Parigi is an Amsterdam-based record label, online shop, distributor and as of about a year ago, a physical store as well, all founded by one man, Otto Kraanen. Although only opening up the shop last March, Bordello A Parigi has been well apparent on the scene since launching back in 2011. Focusing mainly on italo, wave, disco and related genres, the Dutch imprint has managed to carve itself a reputation as one of the premiere purveyors of the aforementioned styles.[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/ichisan-modri-tunel-rhodes-version” /]

In early 2017, Slovenian photographer turned producer Igor Skafar AKA Ichisan (soundcloud) released his debut album “Aperitiv” via Bordello a Parigi. The 11 track LP was, as always, in line with the label’s vision, fusing analog elements into italo, cosmic, wave, disco and acid-inspired jams. Now, a little over a year after the LP’s release, Ichisan is back with four selected reworks from the album. Shedding a lot of the machine-fuelled sounds, he opts for a more organic, instrumental approach with natural drums, guitars, bass, piano and more filling in for the roles previously taken by synthesizers and drum machines. Despite losing a lot of the original instrumentation he manages to keep the feel of the originals intact while focusing on specific instruments for each rework – the harpsichord, rhodes piano, trumpet and piano.

Ichisan serves up a delectable four course offering on his “Aperitiv Selected Reworks” EP and it all starts with the appetizer and A1, Hotel Jama (Harpsichord Version). Taking a more uplifting approach than its album counterpart, soaring arpeggios and jolly harpsichord keys make this a delectable first taste. Diving into the first part of the main course and our premiere for today, the A2, Modri Tunel (Rhodes Version) has an almost blues-y feel to it with twangy guitars and of course the slightly moodier rhodes keys adding a soulful touch. The Todd Terje-esque bassline of the original is replaced with a funky bass guitar on the B1, Kozmetika (Trumpet Version), while the horns take centre stage and add even more flavour to this already decadent meal. Terminal E (Piano Version) is the last track and digestif of this particular EP with the piano melodies here serving as the final sip after a particularly wholesome meal. More than just an Aperitiv, these reworks need to be consumed as a full spread.

Out early April, you can pre-order your copy directly from the shop here.

Malcolm Mitchell’s Global Warming Records is a self-proclaimed outlet for “discoholics” and multi-cultural geeks. The three projects they’ve released are a collection of songs emanating a cosmic, often tribal, synth heavy analog disco sound. The latest release from Marseille based producer Fred Berthet (aka. DJ STEEF, soundcloud), an old time friend of the label and major artist of the downtempo scene in the South of France, fits a similar mold. The EP, similar to its artwork, is filled with a slow, sexual tension heightened by slow, driving rhythms and hypnotic acid bass lines.

Included in the EP is a remix from Italian balearic duo, Mushrooms Project (Giorgio Giri and Marco Lentano), who have crafted a superbly organic and deeply drugged out mid tempo burner that seems to call on numerous Ibiza sunrises for inspiration. Freaky, mesmerizing synth work take the listener on a trip to acid islands where steady bass permeates through thick fog over glistening percussive sequences. Its driving rhythms make the track feel faster than it is. This is a much appreciated form of trickery in down-tempo productions. Slow burners that make you dance hard are not easy to make.
The EP, and 100 limited edition copies of the naughty cover art illustrated by Ben Hubbard and printed on 420 x 594 mm poster, 250g heavy matte paper is available to purchase via GWR’s Bandcamp page. Treat yo’self to somethin’ special and grab these tunes for your next opening set, after hours excursion, or home listening session.

After a brief wait between releases, UK-based deep house label Secret Reels is back with a new record. The imprint bears a sound that is often both bittersweet and pensive — a shout to the aesthetic of the now defunct Purple Velvet — and has a serious nose, err, ear for talent. Bordeaux producer Leon Revol (soundcloud) is at the helm for SR007, after showing promise with releases on the likes of Pressed for Time and Monologues. It’s a five track EP (four originals and a remix) – aptly named Astral Plane – that delves into flavors of the cosmic variety.

The A1 slot is occupied by “Far With A Van”, which our friends at Sleazy Beats gave us a peek into a short time ago. It’s an airy and smooth jam, layered with synths, perfectly tuned drums and smart samples. The title track, “Astral Plane” accompanies it on the art-side, in all its dusty, spacey glory.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/leon-revol-far-with-a-van-admin-remix”/]

On the flip comes our premiere – Bolting Bits favorite Admin‘s remix of “Far With A Van”. The Bristolian beatsmith managed to find the sample used in the original mix (or something in the exact same key and vein), flipping it into a warm, organic version. Thick and crackly drums hold up the track as melancholy strums and angelic horns adorn the arrangement above a bouncing bassline. Ultimately, the track builds to a nicely executed climax; all samples smartly cued and positioned. It’s a deft re-imagination of the perfectly delicious original take, and repurposes the cut for more sombre, late hours play.

Rounding out the B are “St. James” and “Outside”, two heady synth-led deep house groovers that nicely continue the vibe of the effort. Followers of Secret Reels and their polished deep house sound will not be disappointed by this 12″ in the slightest. Moreover, young Leon has displayed some serious skill here and will surely be a name to watch in the near future.

The Astral Plane EP is available this week at all good record stores. You can preorder it from Juno here.
