Mango is daydreaming. What could the rest of the world look like right now ? There never was as much tension and desire, craving to go back, as today. “Living the life”, he thought at first while strolling in the streets of San Andres, half naked and barely sober from the night before. Then he lost it, but the music never stopped. It was there all along, waiting behind his illusions of self fulfillment. Now that he met her, he realized that it just needed to go out. Patricia was sitting at his favorite stall, eating a juicy pork leg marinated in some coriander/lime juice (and trust me, this one is a hit). It was love at first sight, and they slowly began to dance on a rhythm. Plugging all wires together, Mango started his machines to make music again… and it was not that good. However, my dear friends, never under estimate the power of love:

A1: As Patricia began to sing and turn those knobs all around, some wild ghetto-ish breaks appeared, served with powerfull neck-breaking moves, damn those pork leg Tacos were good!
A2: Roaring sub and liquid jungly-breaks, UK inspiration fo shizzle, wow finally, it bangs! What a duo innit?!
B1: Mango & Patricia are in total symbiosis. Flipping into something more 90’s electro and retro sound now, adding just a touch of amen break over it.
B2: Exploring their dark side together on a bassy-snaky and quite introspective ballad to finish. They are definitely at their best, and this my friends, is the power of love.

Quote about release: “The aim of 44 Tours is and will always be to be releasing fresh sounds produced by the talents of their city: Nantes (France). Being a bar/venue/record shop and record label, 44 Tours tries to gather the local scene and make bonds over artists who would probably never have met otherwise. This is what happened with Marino and Same O. They both were hanging around at the bar or digging records at the shop. They didn’t know each other at all. Thanks to the team they have met, started to making music together, became friends and produced this EP ! A great story, isn’t it ?”

Surely no “Stranger in the Alps,” Dutch producer Nachtbraker has proven himself to be one of the most consistent and refreshing producers to enter the scene in recent years.

Since first coming into the public eye in 2014 with releases on Dirt Crew and Heist, the Nighthawk has gone on to hit a double whammy most artists dream of but often never achieve; launch (and maintain) a consistently great label (Quartet Series) and release a compelling full-length album that dares to stray away from club gimmes.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-nachtbraker-parmigiana” /]

So, naturally, it comes somewhat of a surprise to see the talented Dutchman’s latest release is stripped of the strong aesthetic we’ve come to expect from him. The tracks here have little care for colorful bodybuilders or quirky comics. Instead, “Parmigiana” favors a raw sonic palette full of the producer’s signature off-kilter grooves, low-key pads, and whacky FX.

Check out “Parmigiana” when it drops on Nachtbraker’s new self-titled label on March 15th (vinyl). Pre-order a copy here!

After a brief hiatus our unsigned series is back. Producers who have appeared on the series so far have been approached by labels and subsequently had material released by them after we helped shed some light on the new talents. We hope we’re able to do the same with the next one in the bunch, coming from Thodén. Get to know a little about him below:

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/unsigned-008-thoden-shape-dexter” /]
Hey my names Kris, I’m 20 and a student based in Manchester. Been DJ’ing and producing for a little less than 2 years now. This track is a culmination of all the things I’m into at the moment, namely breaks and some of the higher bpm electronic stuff. Really wanted to capitalise on the euphoric feel that the combination of the synth and breaks provided. Once I got those down it was all about adding to and enhancing the atmosphere, using echoey vocal chops, a 303 and that final synth line that rounds the track off. Was important to create an effective buildup between sections too, gating the synth and filtering the breaks did the trick there.

I’m still learning the ins and outs of production, haven’t been at this very long. Stumbled upon the ‘unsigned’ series and its perfect for this kind of thing, glad I can use it as a platform for sharing some of what I make.

Cheers,
Thodén

While 2019 has continued the trend of producers pillaging the past for sounds and textures of yesteryear, a few of the elder statesman of the genre continue to press forward to new soundscapes and vistas hitherto unheard. So it is for Jim Coles and Damon Kirkham—better known as Om Unit and Kid Drama—who have teamed up for a fertile 4-tracker on Apollo Records, founded in 1992 as the Ambient division of R&S Records.

Damon has been up to bat plenty of times in his roughly 20 year history, recording his earliest works alongside Boddika as part of the duo Instra:mental, while Jim has been dancing along a spectrum of bass music over the last decade, ranging from low-slung hip hop to mutant variations of jungle and footwork. Jim and Damon have also both produced for the renowned Metalheadz label, resulting in some of the most fervent and caustic examples of drum and bass music of recent memory; however, Om Unit and Kid Drama sync up here to deliver gorgeously blissed-out cuts of astral exploration.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/om-unit-kid-drama-untitled-4″ /]
“Untitled 4” is a perfect snapshot of the duo’s penchant for splicing serenity and grit together to a profound effect. The track evolves gradually with spectral synths that shimmer like stars. Delicate, precise snares propel the track through a high-definition atmosphere glowing and rippling with wonder, until it briefly swerves into the path of a gnarling bass spike that drips with dread. Om Unit and Kid Drama use almost all of Untitled 4’s duration to circle this dichotomy of floating and sinking, coasting through zones of beauty until nearly colliding head on into the pitch black darkness.

These moments of narrow escape buoy the tension of the whole track, pushing and pulling until the final seconds confront the blistering light of a sun, scattering the darkness towards the edges until all that’s left is the brightness. It may still just be a fever dream, but it seems Om Unit and Kid Drama have fully cracked the secrets of space travel. Pre-order now.

Despite the thought that established producers get all of their material snatched up by labels in a heartbeat, the actual reality is that everyone makes music that sometimes can’t find a home right away. We recently featured an unsigned track from a fairly prominent name in Tooli and today we’ve got another one for you from Joe Morris of Clandestino.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/unsigned-007-joe-morris-smoke-mirrors/” /]

Here’s what Joe had to say about the track:
Hey folks. I’ve been making music for around 10 years now and released on a bunch of nice labels. I also co-run the Clandestino label and party collective here in Leeds, UK.

So this track was one of two new things I wrote with a more house / club feel. I wanted to write some club friendly tracks after having a bunch of downtempo things out recently. I was hoping to keep the two tracks together but the other one got picked up so I thought it would be interesting to send to Bolting Bits and see if it gets the attention of any labels I’ve not worked with before. The track kicks off with some dreamy pads, a vibe I’m always drawn to. The drums are in a kinda classic Detroit house style, with a warm chord sequence throughout. For decoration I played some atmospheric keys from the Korg M1 and I’ve included an old hardcore / jungle sample during the breakdown. A de rigueur thing to do right now on house tracks so shoot me for being a vapid bandwagon jumper if you will but hey, it works. The main synth hook was a kind of happy accident. I loaded up Massive on my Kontrol workstation and played in a part that luckily just worked the first time so I kept it in there. Finally I added a touch of grainy white noise to sit underneath for a bit of texture. The whole track came together in a few hours which is super rare for me. Anyway thanks for listening, hope you like x

For their latest hand-stamped white label, the Lobster Theremin crew have procured Montréal homeboy, Dust-e-1, to serve up a healthy dose of late summer, break-infused drum and bass. It is well known that Lobster Theremin are the dons of all things dusty and raw, and it comes as no surprise that their latest 12” fits this aesthetic like a glove.

Hot on the heels of his debut release on Collect-Call, The Lost Dustplates EP is the second instalment from British-born Canada-based Alex Sheaf’s Dust-e-1 alias. The EP explores a unique soundscape while still providing a a welcomed encore of the rough, breaky London sound that earned garnered Dust-e-1 a spot on our radar. Its influences are distinctly 90’s and distinctly British; a nod to the glory days of jungle, breaks and drum and bass.

Today we have the pleasure of bringing you a slice of banging, warehouse-ready drum and bass straight from the EP’s A2: Civilised Rhythms. The track opens in cosmic fashion, before taking us on a mind-bending journey reminiscent of a trip down Rainbow Road (the lo-fi Nintendo 64 version, obviously). A deep vocal provides the perfect balance to the drum and bass shuffle and effervescent breaks. The eclectic addition of interstellar riffs and a touch of bongos is a refreshing reminder of what the possibilities that lie beyond the confines of a particular time and space.

It’s a civilised rhythm made for not-so-civilised behaviour. Get your hands on the wax from September 28.

Where am I? Am I dreaming? What…is this place? These may be the questions you ask yourself when you hit play on George Earnest’s latest project, “A Dreaming Island”, forthcoming on the budding Irish label, Pear. Once again dipping into the local pool, Pear has hit on another extremely talented producer in George, a Kilkenny native now based in Berlin. Sold as an elegy to hedonistic isle living, the EP drifts in and out through 6 balearia-tinged varieties, all referencing various styles of early to late 90’s house music & new age tropes.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/premiere-george-earnest-awake-my-friend” /]
“Awake My Friend” is a gorgeous trip through heart-wrenching ambient melodies and some midi guitar shredding. Starting quietly, sweet pads and FM-style synths glisten as the track builds so nicely into a calm, breaks driven euphoria. Honestly, listening to this makes me feel like a dolphin. More specifically, a video-game dolphin. You ever just wish you were an 8-bit dolphin surfin’ those digital waves in infinite bliss? I have. Shit, life would be so much easier if George soundtracked it. Might have to keep this on repeat for the rest of eternity.

Keep an eye on Pear, a label with an obviously solid ear for good tunes and top production talents. In the meantime, support the youngins by shellin’ out some dough for the EP. It’s out now via Bandcamp in digital and vinyl format. Shoot George a follow too, I’m sure he’ll appreciate it. Fins up.

The Cease and Desist EP is the first 12” from Daniel Fisher’s Kirk The Flirt alias, and with the calibre of early support it boasts (Project Pablo, Fabio Monesi, xxxy, The Black Madonna, Pepe, Ethyl, Baltra) we’re crossing our fingers that it won’t be the last. Axe Traxx are well established purveyors of dancefloor fire. Previous hosts to the likes of Mall Grab, DJ Aakmael and Marlon Hoffstadt, the London based label have curated an enviable discography of unapologetically raw break-infused house. Kirk the Flirt has done an impressive job of keeping the fire burning, delivering an EP built for the party, one that is equally as nostalgic for the raves of the 90’s as it is excited by those of tomorrow.

[soundcloud url=”https://soundcloud.com/boltingbits/kirk-the-flirt-good-vibrations-physical-therapy-mini-dub” /]
Cease and Desist is an EP of impressive stylistic breadth– a testament to self-described “omnivore” Daniel Fisher and the colourful productions of his many personas. On the A-side, Kirk the Flirt reminds us of the effective simplicity of house music, with four feel-good club bangers. The music is stripped back and simple, but not at all reserved. It is music you can get silly to, without the constraints of a composition that feels too clean or too tight. In all, it proves yet again that a good beat, infectious vocals, and a few well-timed breaks are more than enough to tug on the heartstrings of crowds in both house parties and festivals alike.

Our premiere today is the hidden gem of the EP, sitting on the B side among a playful set of edits of the aptly named ‘Good Vibrations’. The B3, Good Vibrations (Physical Therapy Mini Dub), offers a deeper, more haze-dipped summer sound; the type of dubby house that’s sweeping the scene at the moment for all the right reasons. Physical Therapy’s slinky groove has a simple elegance to it: snatches of brushed snares, gleaming pads and dubby stabs draped nonchalantly over a 4/4 kick. This combination of production quality and emotional content is the perfect way to round off the EP with a wave of euphoria – one that we wish we could ride for longer.

You can get your hands on this scorcher digitally and on hot black wax from May 14. Pre-order it from Bandcamp now.

Evidence Found No.1 is an Anniversary compilation curated by the London Based label Little Beat Different. Featuring the likes of “Dempa” and “Regular Customer” as well as some found favorites, this compilation is driven by a powerful roster. One of the most notable tracks, “Break & Enter III” by Varum (soundcloud), exhibits a particularly authentic tone. Hailing from Leipzig, Germany, Varum has crafted a unique sound; blurring the lines between lo-fi house and techno.
The first noticeable thing about “Break & Enter III” is its organic textures and raw aesthetic. Varumʼs dark and gritty formula fuses a tight breakbeat pattern with lush and spacious pads, which creates an oddly nostalgic atmosphere. The 7- minute track meshes multiple motifs, each section carrying a slight variation of the main melody, which reads as somewhat of mini-mix. Aside from the songs structure, the production is top notch. The breakbeatʼs muted Hi hats and snares provide a stark and clever contrast to the glistening synths. “Break & Enter III” is a breath of fresh air when compared to todays polished EDM tracks, and will provide the perfect, fierce, crescendo for a set-closing track.

Glasgow-based Craigie Knowes are back with their annual fundraiser for War Child, this being their third year in a row contributing to the charity. All profits derived from the sale of the two part compilation records will be donated to the foundation dedicated to supporting children and young people who are affected by war. As has become the norm for the Scottish staple, the releases will feature a variety of producers with a fairly diverse palette of sounds, from jungle to breaks to acid and beyond. Making an appearance on the first of the editions will will be Luke Vibert, DJ Overdose, Cynus, TEXTASY, ASOK and London Modular Alliance, who we have the pleasure of premiering today.

Ruggamuffin from London Modular Alliance (soundcloud) is your prototypical jungle track throwing it back to the heyday of ragga as the track’s title not so subtly suggests. Chopped drum loops, breaks and snare rolls? Check. Classic reggae and dub instrumentation and vocal samples? Check. Bone shattering bass meant only for speakers capable of reproducing the lowest of frequencies? Check. This track clearly wasn’t made to reinvent the wheel but what it does is successfully builds on the existing (albeit classic) models and throws us on a bit of a nostalgia trip. Both London Modular Alliance and Craigie Knowes show once again that they’re not looking to label themselves as purveyors of any particular sound and are unafraid to colour outside the lines. Pre-order your copy and help out a good cause via your favourite online or local distributor.
