However, despite the easy-to-dance-to club music base, don’t be fooled – Hairdressa’s lyrics delve much deeper. Her songs touch on themes such as painful breakups, the blinding euphoria of substance use, fear of intimacy, and a zest for life. The result is a collection of beautiful and sophisticated songs that can find a place both on the radio and the dance floor.

leoleoleo is a project by Manchester based DJ and producer, Leo Burrell. After a euphoric debut single in the spring of 2022 which saw support from Horse Meat Disco, Sasha and Bill Brewster, as well as DJ sets alongside Romare, Cody Currie and Crazy P, Leo returns with a more melancholic yet still optimistic, tropes EP, landing on November 25th, featuring collaborations with jazz pianist, Rupert Cox and ambient guitarist, John Diver.

The tropes EP continues the half-glass-full aesthetic of the agadir/parapet EP, with soaring pads, arpeggiators and synth leads taking center stage, all underpinned by consistently broken kicks – there’s no 4-on-the-floor in sight here. It has a definite home-listening dynamic, but all the tracks explore modern dance-floor tropes, hence the title.

The first and only single, red sun (out November 4th – music video ) was born out of a formative trip to Jordan in January 2020, with memories of crossing the sublime Wadi Rum desert in a jeep inspiring epic soundscapes, punctuated by a momentous breakbeat, pounding kicks and a funky yet machine-like bassline.

Opening track, yuánfen ft. rupert cox sees offcuts of jazz pianist, Rupert Cox’s forthcoming debut album sampled alongside an elusive ‘60s sample. More pads and analog goodness were added later by Rupert, with leoleoleo on arpeggiators, drums and arrangement.

Third track, esme ft. john diver is a collaboration with Glaswegian ambient guitarist, John Diver which was previewed back in April, leading to support from veteran, Bill Brewster as well as play-listing from EELF, Majestic Casual and Sasha, who added it to the burgeoning LUZoSCURA editorial.

Acting title track, trope, was written in the first lockdown of 2020, with a doomsday sensibility pervading throughout. Inspired by Joy Orbison’s Slipping EP, this deceptively slow number chugs with a driving energy from more broken kicks before unfolding into a huge bass drop which concludes the EP.

Then we have D’s very own re-rub of ’49North EP3”s ‘Omnite’ – a beastly slab of purposeful Techno, that appears to pay homage ever so subtly to a certain, much-loved 80’s classic in the process.

Cooper Saver then steps up to the ‘Slow Burn 2049’ remix plate – delivering an entrancing piece of slo-mo, percussion-laden magic; before the mighty Locked Groove takes us over the finish line – twisting Duncan’s ‘In The Mansion Of The Gods’ into a dark, dub-washed Techno titan.

British producer Andy Ash is on a roll! His recent release for Quintessentials slaps hard and not to mention output on such respected labels as Sheffield’s Moment Cinetique, Chicago’s Still Love 4 Music, New York’s On The Prowl and Sydney’s People Must Jam. Andy Ash tracks always have this wonky edge to them which make his music stand out in the crowd and we’re pleased to welcome him back for his third release on Delusions entitled the Tiawo EP.

Kicking off this four track EP, the title track goes deep into early Chicago house territory calling to mind those incredible drum machine and synth workouts on Trax. Stripped back to just the driving 707 groove and chiming digital synths this punchy warehouse jam is just the track for those heady hours where the dance floor becomes suspended in time and the dancers are locked into the unfaltering groove.

Next up Strictly Pins goes for a minimal approach with shuffling drums, moody Detroit Rhodes chords, bass and….. that’s about it. But it grooves hard!

Burger treads a similar rhythmic and sonic path but with added trippy factor coming from a completely twisted vocal sample which is warped, cut up and processed for maximum freak-effect. Just a little insight into the mind of a madman which is both quite fun and disturbing in equal measures.

Closing out the EP we have Brother which goes for a slightly more conventional deep house sound with syncopated stabs, rolling bassline and swinging drums.

Following the same pattern as its initial two releases, WWW is back with EP004 in a shape of a remix pack: retaining two remixers from the previous pack and introducing two new names on the bill. Both Hong Kong via Nantes Romain FX and Vilnius italo adept Black Feeling delivered massive remixes in the first pack and boy they don’t disappoint yet again. Romain has totally reworked the track and infused it with exotic oriental sounds and Black Feeling hits all the marks once again with his signature feel-good italo house vibes.

Since Blaise Balda has already released one EP on Rees’ Paradiso Records, it was natural to ask Adam for a remix. Middlesbrough talent shines agent hitting all the right notes and keeping the vibe joyous and the energy pure.

Last but not least are Berlin’s italo duo Sauvage World from Slow Motion/Wrong Era fame. Guys are raising the tempo up to 125, tweaking a few bits here and there and adding just a little bit extra of their own magic to make it sound like a proper italo banger for not-so-wrong era we all find ourselves in.

Next up for London via Detroit artist Demi Riquísmo is an exciting six-track remix EP on his Semi Delicious record label. Demi, who has been receiving praise by many in the underground dance music scene, lined up a head-turning collection of reworks from Kassian, T.Jacques, Baby Rollen, Black Loops, Manual Darquart and Jive Talk. This isn’t your average remix EP, as each artist completely reinvents his work in their own unique way.

The EP opens straight away with a dancefloor destroying remix of ’54 Reasons’ by Kassian. A steady, up-tempo and commanding drum pattern set the stage from the get go, with a warm bassline being introduced around the minute mark. The vocal recalls dancefloor days with its intuitive charm, worthy of a chant in the club. Perfectly crafted synth-work guides the listener throughout the track but makes it to the spotlight when the kick and bass cease, just before guiding the listener back to the familiarity of the drum groove. All in all, the track has that classic Kassian take on house that we have grown fond of over the years.
